Letter from the Executive Director & Board Chair There is no doubt this past year has been transformative in many ways. One thing that has not changed is the Gibbes’ commitment to providing engaging and thoughtprovoking exhibitions and programs to the Charleston community. When Gibbes’ staff returned to the office and the museum reopened on June 1, 2020, the first priority was safety on all fronts for staff, security, visitor services, members, and guests. Through PPP, an SBA loan, emergency grant funding, and private donations, the Gibbes was able to implement safety measures throughout the museum. Additionally, the staff quickly learned ways to offer programming through virtual opportunities from Zoom to Facebook Live to pre-recorded videos. ANGELA D. MACK Executive Director

HELEN C. PRATT-THOMAS Chair of Board of Directors

While we also experienced a tumultuous time in our world, the Gibbes held fast to its continuous mantra that “art is the reason.” And through it all we very much learned that art is indeed the reason. Further, our community of artists stepped forward to help us continue in our efforts. As you will see in the following pages, we are indebted to Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman for their willingness to move forward on an exhibition that was originally scheduled for a later date. Yet, timing is everything and we quickly learned that this could not have been a better time to present Building a Legacy: The Vibrant Vision Collection of Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman. Jonathan’s own willingness to share his time for small tours helped to sustain the Gibbes. And out of this exhibition came profound conversation offered by visiting artists, scholars, and guests in our Town Hall series. Our Board of Directors, our Fellows Members and our Auxiliary Groups also should be thanked a thousand times over as their hard work, dedication, ingenuity, and generous funding support kept the museum afloat. Today, we talk a lot about resilience and through the successful efforts of the Gibbes Distinguished Lecture, the Art of Design Luncheon, Society 1858’s Art Auction, and the Gibbes Spring Soiree, the Gibbes remained resilient. The continued work of the Gibbes IDEA committee along with the tenets of the Gibbes 10-year Strategic Plan (2018–2028), we look forward to an even brighter future where we work together to Build Community, Build our Collection, and Build a Curriculum. We truly thank you for your steadfast support, and we invite you to continue this journey with us.

THE GIBBES MANIFESTO The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The Museum connects the city and region’s artistic past to a vibrant contemporary art scene. This is what we believe.

Art is the reason. A bustling seaport in the 1700s, Charleston was a melting pot of cultures, religions, and traditions. Powered by the labor of enslaved peoples in the rice and indigo trades, it was the 4th largest city in America in 1790—and the wealthiest. Like Philadelphia, Boston and New York, what distinguished Charleston then—was art. While we were home to some of America’s earliest art, collectors, and artists, who made the City both muse and subject—and took our turn as one of the nation’s richest cities—in money and culture—so were we also home to America’s original sin, slavery— and a war that divided our nation. In 1888, when Charleston was financially and culturally on its knees, benefactor James Gibbes left a bequest to the City to build an art museum. When the Gibbes Museum opened in 1905, the nation celebrated what Charleston has always understood: the power of art—to inspire our imagination, heal our hurt, revel in our experience, rebuild what’s

broken, nourish our souls, and release all that holds us back. Through our complicated history, through light and shadow, we have persevered—humanity intact.

Art is the reason Charleston will endure. In Charleston, we believe art is the difference between merely existing and being truly alive. That’s why we immerse ourselves in every part of it—from fine art to craft—from nurturing its creation and celebrating its multicultural presentation—to inviting its interpretation and ensuring its preservation. Because when we open ourselves to art, we open ourselves to the world—to people and ideas, to beauty, craft, process and detail, to different cultures, to pain and pleasure, to questions, expression and emotion, to truth and transcendence. In the presence of art, we have the opportunity to see inside the artist’s heart, mind, and soul and feel what the artist felt. That understanding and compassion make us more understanding, compassionate people, who, in turn, create a more compassionate, understanding world.

That is art’s gift. 5

DEMOGRAPHIC DATA 2008–2021 The 17-million-dollar restoration/renovation of the Gibbes Museum of Art completed in 2016 launched a new era for visual arts tourism in the state of South Carolina. The oldest museum structure in the South, the third largest cultural venue in the State, and the only art museum in Charleston, the Gibbes has garnered numerous accolades since reopening and during the pandemic to enhance cultural tourism and contribute to its economic resiliency and growth. Designated a national historic site, the 1905 Beaux-Arts style building is recognized as part of a wave of major art museums built in the United States during the first decades of the 20th century including the famed Philadelphia Museum of Art (1928), the Cleveland Museum of Art (1916) and the St. Louis Museum of Art (1903) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1880) to name a few. It’s existence in Charleston led to the art movement known as the Charleston Renaissance (1915-1940) and today it serves as the hub for a vibrant visual arts scene that includes art schools, studios, galleries, and temporary display venues, or pop ups, that all contribute to the arts economy of Charleston and the State. A recent economic study conducted by the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business at The Citadel revealed an impact of over 120 million per year through job creation and heads to beds. USA Today and Travel Channel consistently recognizes the Gibbes as the best museum in South Carolina and Travel and Leisure lists the Gibbes among the top ten wedding venues in Charleston. Yearly, the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB) praises the Gibbes for its strength in luring repeat visitors to Charleston due to its active, ever-changing exhibition schedule of six to eight a year. More recently the Gibbes has received accolades from the press for its handling of the pandemic by being one of the first cultural organizations to reopen after closures in March of 2020. With all protocols in place, the museum has remained consistently open to the public since June 1, 2020, with attendance reaching between 70% to 100% pre-COVID levels over the last six months. Offering a vibrant facility, thought-provoking exhibitions, outstanding educational programming, and a space for our artist community, the Gibbes Museum of Art has grown and transformed through the centuries. The creation of the museum’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee, a 10-Year Strategic Plan (2018–2028), and new methods of interpretation help promote social inclusion and fill gaps in our shared culture.

BUILDING A LEGACY

Building a Legacy For the Gibbes Museum of Art, 2020–2021 was defined by one exhibition and two extraordinary individuals in particular: Building a Legacy: The Vibrant Vision Collection of Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman. While this exhibit technically closed at the start of 2021, the range of Pan American artists and perspectives represented in it set the tone for the year ahead, filled with dynamic exhibitions and programs that celebrated the human experience in all of its diversity. Jonathan and Richard’s willingness to expedite this important exhibit, at a time when the Gibbes was facing great uncertainty due to the global pandemic, would inspire pragmatism, ingenuity, and excellence among staff, Board, and across our wider community. After all, it was during Building a Legacy’s run that Gibbes staff got to test and hone their ability to produce virtual gallery tours, events, panel discussions, and artist talks in order to keep our members and the wider community engaged. And it was the diverse range of artists represented in Building a Legacy that offered the Gibbes an entry point for exploring some of the national conversations about race, identity, history, and community that came to a head in the summer of 2020, and that have continued to challenge museum institutions across the country to be a voice for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

12

M C G P H O TO G R A P H Y

That is why on May 28, 2021, the Gibbes Museum of Art awarded Jonathan Green the James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award, presented annually to an individual, group or business who demonstrates outstanding philanthropic contributions to the museum.

Building Community Among the conversations sparked by Building a Legacy was our ongoing virtual town hall series For Which it Stands where, together with local artists, historians and activists, the Gibbes has had the opportunity to explore what defines the American experience, and indeed what community looks like right now in the face of a global pandemic and a renewed commitment to racial justice. Neither has the need for these critical dialogues and the important role art institutions have to play in facilitating them waned. That’s why, amid a national reckoning with violence against Asian immigrant and Asian American communities in the spring of 2021, we knew that it was important that the Gibbes create a platform for discussing these experiences. Building on what we learned the year prior, we understood that we couldn’t properly celebrate the contributions of Japanese artists through our 2021 exhibit Lasting Impressions Japanese Prints from the Read-Simms Collection without also holding space for the systems of discrimination that Asian immigrant and Asian American communities have had to navigate historically. In May we hosted For Which it Stands: Landscapes of the Japanese American Experience in partnership

with contemporary artist Emily Hanako Momohara where she explored her work documenting sites of Japanese internment during WWII, her multicultural identity, and family narratives. Feeling increasingly confident in our ability to curate thoughtful and high quality virtual experiences, in 2021, the Gibbes also hosted the three part virtual lecture series Depth of Field: Perspectives on 20th Century Photography, which accompanied the exhibition In Body and Soul: The Figures in Modernist Photography. In this three part series, unbound by geography, we were able to expand our network of partner institutions by engaging faculty at the State University of New York-New Paltz, the University of Toronto, and the School of Visual Art & Design at the University of South Carolina in conversations that delved into the role of trailblazing women photographers like Margaret Bourke-White in cementing the cultural allure of the photojournalist, and the influence that queer photographers like George Platt Lynes had on fashion photography. Both Bourke-White and Lynes’s photographs were featured in In Body and Soul: The Figures in Modernist Photography and are part of the Gibbes permanent collection.

Building a Curriculum In addition to adult programming and events, Building a Legacy offered a unique opportunity to use this amazing collection to design an interdisciplinary curriculum for K-12 students featuring units themed around American Identity; Economic Security, Sustainability, and Vitality; Family and Belonging; Innovation; Mindfulness; and Social Equity for which the Gibbes was awarded $500,000 by the state of South Carolina to execute. These units, while focusing on artists and works highlighted in Building a Legacy, will be designed to discuss issues from immigration, migration and displacement (American Identity), to family roles and representations (Family and Belonging), and labor (Economic Security, Sustainability, and Vitality). This curriculum will serve as a tool for school districts and higher education institutions across the country to teach

sensitive and challenging subjects through the universal lens of the visual arts. We also, with the help of the Education Committee, developed a new batch of educational packets offering critical thinking exercises, artmaking activities, and creative writing prompts inspired by artwork in Building a Legacy, Manning Williams: Reinventing Narrative Painting, and In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Photography, reaching over 300 students. And the learning didn’t stop with students. Modeled in part on the format we developed through our town hall series, the Gibbes launched a total of 6 professional development sessions for educators that explored how to use art to teach social justice themes in the classroom, creative writing and art, and the value of primary resources among other topics.

Building our Collection Always aiming to ensure that the Gibbes is building towards a more inclusive and truthful history of Charleston through the visual arts, we continued to make efforts to diversify the artists represented in our permanent collection. We were thrilled to add three significant new acquisitions to the collection made possible by generous donors who recognize the importance of broadening our visual storytelling and are committed to supporting the work of contemporary artists. Building on the prestigious 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art awarded annually to an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of art in the South, the Gibbes acquired “Sanctuary” by the 2019 winner, Donté K. Hayes. Hayes’s artwork is influenced by hip-hop, history, and science fiction, and explores themes in Afrofuturism. The dynamic ceramic sculpture “Sanctuary” was created by the artist specifically for Charleston and is inspired by the artist’s research focused on the pineapple as a symbol of welcoming and hospitality, which he found is rooted in the history of slavery and agricultural colonization of the Caribbean, South America, and the Southern United States.

methodology that incorporates found objects and natural materials in his art-making process. He often paints with Spanish moss, builds house-like structures with salvaged wood and tin roof and fashions delicate sculptures out of handwoven palmetto roses. His sculptural wall hanging “Holy City,” composed of wood and Charleston palmetto roses was generously donated by Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman. Additionally, the Gibbes purchased Williams’s large-scale work on paper “Eden,” with support provided by private donors. Created by taking multiple rubbings of a single fence post and then painted with Spanish moss, forming overlapping and intertwining white pickets that present a fictional landscape, this work conjures complex questions around this traditional symbol of the American dream. The 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art was awarded to North Carolina-based artist Stephen L. Hayes Jr. in 2020. Hayes creates sculptural installations from found materials that draw on social and economic themes ingrained in the history of the United States and African Americans. His monumental wall relief “They Combined Beauty” created in 2015 was also recently added to the Gibbes permanent collection further advancing our efforts to diversify the stories told through our permanent collection.

The Gibbes also added two works by Charleston-based and former Gibbes Visiting Artist, Fletcher Williams III. Williams is interested in place and identity and has established a working

“The arts empower. The arts give a voice to the voiceless. The arts help transform American communities and, as I often say, the result can be a better child, a better town, a better nation and certainly a better world. Let’s champion our arts action heroes, emulate them and make our communities everything we want them to be.” – R O B E R T L . LY N C H , P R E S I D E N T, AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS
