LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR LAURA GATES WE ARE ALMOST THERE! Last year I wrote to you about the excitement of getting our renewal project started. I wrote about how good it felt to be making concrete progress toward the realization of our plans and vision. Now we are, in fact, almost there! We will be opening the doors to our future in just a few short months. A future that includes a building that will enhance and showcase our collections, scholarship, and special exhibitions and a garden that will provide a place to relax, recharge, and celebrate in the center of the city.

I am so thankful to have been on this journey of renewal with all of you. The commitment and generosity of our Board and Fellows, our Women’s Council and Society 1858, and the many friends of the Gibbes has been critical and inspiring. The leadership and tireless dedication of our incomparable Executive Director Angela Mack and her team has made all the difference! The renewal of our physical space has consumed much of the Board’s attention but luckily our talented staff has continued to focus on the programs, exhibitions, and works of art that are the heart of the Gibbes. In addition, the Board and staff have been working hard to define our goals for the Gibbes following the reopening. With a new building comes a new look, and we have been working tirelessly on our brand and visual identity. We have provided a peek of our new mission and logo, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months as we near the Gibbes reopening. If you haven’t invested in the Gibbes’ future, it isn’t too late. We still need your help. Consider making a commitment, and if you have already given—do it again! Several of us have decided to increase our gifts—continuing our annual pledges to the capital campaign by one more year! Please join us. It will feel good! The arts and the Gibbes belong to our entire community. Together we will create a more exciting future for Charleston. I look forward to seeing you in the coming months and invite you to join me in all the celebrations and programs that will begin this spring. It will be fun—guaranteed!

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ANGELA D. MACK AT THE GIBBES WE UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF ART to inspire our imagination, heal our hurt, revel in our experience, and nourish our souls. The Gibbes is where anyone can walk through the doors and come face to face with what makes us human. It is where creativity is nurtured and celebrated and where lives are transformed. This spring, our vision for a renovated museum becomes a reality and an investment in the future of the visual arts in Charleston and the world beyond. As the oldest art museum facility in the South, the Gibbes has had an impact on countless students and adults through its decades of education and outreach programs; and has reshaped our definition of American art through its unique collection, thousands of exhibitions, and groundbreaking scholarship. The Gibbes is the reason Charleston’s cultural legacy survives and it is the reason Charleston’s creative economy will continue to evolve and grow. Time and time again we hear that great cities deserve great museums. But we should also remember that great museums make cities great. And a great museum happens because of members like you. You are making a difference in our community by recognizing what the Gibbes has to offer and supporting its future. While we are nearing the completion of this journey through the incredible generosity of over 400 individuals and organizations, the job is yet to be complete. We need your help to finish the task at hand! It is not too late to invest in the greatness of our city through the Gibbes. Please join us. My heartfelt thanks for believing in the true value of art.

The purpose of the renovation of the Gibbes is to bring together two components of the visual arts; CREATIVITY and FINISHED PRODUCT and, in addition, to educate and introduce the next generation to the POWER OF THE VISUAL ARTS and how it can truly CHANGE LIVES.” — ANGEL A MACK, E XECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GIBBES MUSEUM OF ART

“Every city deserves a great art museum because art museums INSPIRE us, they CHALLENGE us, NOURISH us, and they give us PEACE. Human beings are creative species and when we come to a great art museum our personal creativity is brought to the forefront. The renovations will make this 109 year-old building seem brand new. We will see the Gibbes as we’ve never seen it before and I can’t wait for that moment.” —MAYOR JOSEPH P. RILE Y, JR.

ACQUISITIONS SARA ARNOLD | curator of collections

FIVE NE W WORKS OF ART WERE ACQUIRED FOR THE MUSEUM’S PERM A NENT COLLECTION in F Y2015 both through gift and purchase. Purchases included works by two contemporary American artists. In February, the museum purchased Hani, a portrait by Charleston’s contemporary realist painter Jill Hooper. In 2014, Hooper spent three weeks in hospitals in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and at a mobile outreach clinic in Gaza to sketch and paint the staff and patients. She produced over 50 sketches and paintings during her trip and Hani, oil on linen, depicts a staff member from the Anabta Clinic in Palestine. The museum also purchased its first work by internationally acclaimed artist Kara Walker. Walker is best known for her large scale

cut-paper silhouettes that explore race, gender, sexuality, and identity. In 2011, Walker worked with Arion Press in San Francisco to illustrate the libretto for the classic Gershwin opera Porgy and Bess. Walker’s interpretation includes sixteen lithographs that are bound into an artist book and a suite of four lithographic prints. This series of works will be featured in the Gibbes 2016 opening exhibition, Beyond Catfish Row: The Art of Porgy and Bess, that will open in conjunction with Spoleto Festival USA’ s production of Porgy and Bess with set and costume designs by artist Jonathan Green. The museum also received several noteworthy gifts to the collection including a miniature portrait of Sally Blount by Raphaelle Peale donated by Mr. B.T. Kinsey Marable, Mary Whyte’s original sketch for her 1997 watercolor painting entitled, The Hugo Sweater donated by W. Brown Morton, III, and a 1930s drypoint etching by Yngve Edward Soderberg titled, Past Glory donated by Dr. James Simpson.

ZINNIA WILLITS | director of collections administration

THE GIBBES COLLECTION HAS BEEN PACKED AWAY IN STORAGE FOR THE PAST YEAR but Zinnia’s responsibilities to the artwork have continued. She has made numerous trips to Atlanta to facilitate the movement of artwork currently housed at the High Museum of Art storage facility into the lab at the Atlanta Art Conservation Center; two signature pieces are currently undergoing conservation treatment. The marble relief, The Wreck of the Rose in Bloom by John Devaere and the gilded frame on Charles Izard Manigault and his Family in Rome by Ferdinando Cavalleri, are being cleaned and repaired during the storage period. These two works will be centerpieces of The Charleston Story exhibition.

Zinnia continued to oversee logistics for artwork returning from loan to other institutions and coordinated the many details related to current outgoing loans. Two paintings by Franz Ludwig Catel were sent to the Hamburg Kunsthalle in Germany for an exhibition on Catel’s landscapes, and twenty-five works from the permanent collection (including twelve miniature portraits) are featured in the exhibition, An Eye for Opulence, Charleston Through the Lens of the Rivers Collection at the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida. Zinnia also worked with the curatorial department on loan requests for works to supplement The Charleston Story. Loans have been secured from many prestigious institutions including the National Portrait Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In addition to ongoing collection duties, Zinnia has been working with Zinnia, Sara Arnold, and Jen Ross helped to secure funding our construction team of Evans and from the prestigious Bank of America Art Conservation Project Schmidt, NBM, and Nick Cameron on for the conservation of two significant pastel paintings by the many details related to the substantial completion and Henrietta de Beaulieu Dering Johnston, widely considered the upfit of the future collection storage suite. PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS LASLEY STEEVER | director of public programs & special events

EVEN THOUGH THE GIBBES MUSEUM WAS CLOSED in FY15, our programs and events made us more open than ever! Staff and audience members stayed busy, with happenings at various locations around town. While our building undergoes renovation, our friends and neighbors have provided alternate venues for our Art with a Twist, Art of Healing, and Insider Art series. Our fundraising events, including the Distinguished Lecture Series, Society 1858’s Winter Party, the Women’s Council Art of Design luncheon

and lecture, and our Gibbes on the Street celebration continued to impress and raised over $315,000. Fellows enjoyed the opportunity to travel to Philadelphia, PA, and Bentonville, AR, where they toured the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Fellows programming closer to home provided a chance for cultivation of new friends with special invitations to view private collections in the Lowcountry. We greatly look forward to the reopening of the museum in May 2016. Our new ground floor Education Center will include Artist-in-Residence studios, classrooms, a new lecture hall, and flexible event space. Bringing all of our programming back “under the dome” will be a welcome dream come true. PHOTOS | MCG Photography, Carolina Photosmith

PreK–12, COLLEGE AND CONTINUING EDUCATION REBECCA SAILOR | curator of education

TODAY, THROUGH ITS MANY PROGRAMS, THE GIBBES PROVES OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT ART HAS THE POWER TO BETTER LIVES. The Gibbes has been, and continues to be, committed to the children in the tri-county area. Several Gibbes programs currently serve children in Title I and underserved schools. The following programs help to foster in-class discussions and inter-disciplinary activities that explore science, math, history, social studies, and language arts while encouraging critical thinking and visual literacy. Art to Go combines art making and instruction through firsthand experience with works of art. Gibbes teaching artists assist schools with a specific art project or complement an ongoing art program. Lessons are designed to broaden students’ understanding of art principles, art history, and creative expression. This program collaborates with the Charleston Marathon and some projects are displayed during the race for community viewing. In 2014–15 Art to Go was held at Angel Oak Elementary, Mitchell Elementary, Pinehurst Elementary, Lambs Elementary, and James Simons Elementary. This past fall, Meeting Street Academy was added to the program as well as Pepperhill Elementary. Eye Spy helps elementary students examine and talk about art. A Gibbes educator works with a classroom visual arts teacher to incorporate the use of objects to highlight the elements of art, introduce broad explanations of style, and teach students to compare and contrast. This past year Eye Spy continued at St. Andrews School of Math & Science, Springfield Elementary, Drayton Hall Elementary, North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary, Meeting Street Academy and Charleston County First Steps childcare centers. This fall, James Island Elementary joined this program. Eye Opener is part of the Engaging Creative Minds initiative in Charleston County. This program connects museum educators with students and teachers selected through the ECM program. Using the visual arts, music and literature, teachers and museum educators expand the learning process in the classroom. Eye Opener took place in Angel Oak Elementary, Haut Gap Middle School, and Jennie Moore

Elementary. Currently, sessions are scheduled for Zucker Middle School, Ladson Elementary, Angel Oak Elementary, and Haut Gap Middle School. The Junior Docents Program offers middle school students opportunities to be trained by museum educators to become docents. This program takes place over the course of a semester with the Junior Docents providing information on works of art through guided tours to younger students in their school and to their parents. Students conduct extensive research on works they have chosen including artist, medium, time period, and other art history components. They also learn public speaking strategies and how to present opinions in a professional manner. In 2014–2015, the Junior Docents Program, utilizing the Charleston Museum’s collection, continued with Ashley Hall, Charleston Day and Charleston Collegiate. This fall, Ashley Hall will complete their tours and Charleston Day will begin in 2016. All of these in-school programs include field trips to the Gibbes. For the 18 months the museum has been closed for renovation, sites such as the Charleston Museum, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, and the City Gallery at Waterfront Park have been utilized for the field trip component. Collaboration with community partners was integral in continued outreach and education programming. 2014–15 outreach took place at the Mt. Pleasant Farmer’s Market, Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry Fam Jam, Engaging Creative Minds Festival, OPEN Festival, and the Mt. Pleasant Children’s Festival. Adult and teen classes ranging from watercolor to drawing to art history were taught in various locations downtown. Children’s after school classes continued at Hazel Parker Community Center and Summer Art Camp 2015 for ages 4-12 was held again for six weeks at Circular Congregational Church. The College of Charleston internship program continued in the Collections, Programs and Events and Education departments. Rebecca attended and presented at the Southeastern Museums Conference in Knoxville, TN last spring and this fall in Jacksonville, FL in addition to the South Carolina Federation of Museums conference in Florence, SC. Rebecca also had the opportunity to attend the American Alliance of Museums conference in Atlanta, GA in April.

JAMES SHOOLBRED GIBBES PHILANTHROPY AWARD THE BOARD AND STAFF OF THE CAA bestowed the James S. Gibbes Philanthropy Award at the Fellows Luncheon in May on a group which exemplifies Gibbes’ support of the creative arts. This year we honored a business rather than an individual, primarily because its philanthropy has spanned generations and is alive and strong today. William Joseph Croghan opened Croghan’s Jewel Box in 1919 on King Street. His daughter, Mary Croghan Ramsay, was owner and manager of the store and during this time was a tireless supporter and board member of the Gibbes and a champion of the local arts community. Mary remained involved with the museum until her death in 2009. Her daughters, Mariana Hay and Rhett Outten have carried on this tradition of support. Rhett has been a faithful and hardworking board member since 2011 and was co-chair of the Street Party in 2013. She is a current member of the External Affairs Committee and offers a boundless enthusiasm to her varied roles. Over the years Croghan’s has been a consistent donor to silent auctions, a sponsor of the Women’s Council’s annual Art of Design luncheon, and the Gibbes Street Party and has maintained a Fellows level business membership for decades. They truly epitomize the “spirit of generosity” in their suppor t within the community, and now this level of community engagement is being passed on to the next generation.

MARY WHYTE ART EDUCATOR AWARD ESTABLISHED IN 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award is designed to highlight a high school visual arts teacher in South Carolina school districts who has demonstrated superior commitment to their students and to their craft. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $2,500 and is administered and presented annually by the Gibbes. Shannon Carroll, from North Charleston High School, was the 2015 Mary Whyte Art Educator Award Winner. Ms. Carroll is a National Board Certified Secondary Visual Arts teacher. She is also certified in AP Visual Arts with degrees from the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College. Ms. Carroll has been at North Charleston High School since 2013 and taught school at Drayton Hall Elementary, West Ashley Middle and CE Williams Middle prior to 2013. She has served as a Leadership Team member, Teacher Roundtable Representative, State Certified Mentor, Department Chairperson, PBIS Chair, and Art Club Sponsor throughout her career. As an artist, Ms. Carroll works primarily in mixed media especially combining found objects, collage, painting, written word, and printmaking. Mary Whyte presented the award at the South Carolina Art Educators Association annual meeting on November 14, 2015 in Beaufort, SC.

1858 PRIZE FOR CONTEMPORARY SOUTHERN ART THIS YEAR, the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art was a resounding success. From over 275 ar tist submissions, the prize panel selected a stellar short list of finalists including Aldwyth, Andrea Keys Connell, Kevin Jerome Everson, George Jenne, Deborah Luster and Ebony G. Patterson. In September, photographer Deborah Luster was named winner of the $10,000 prize. Luster, who lives and works in New Orleans, turned to photography as a means to cope with the murder of her mother. She has created thousands of powerful, haunting portraits of prisoners housed in Louisiana. Her recent body of work captures desolate landscapes in New Orleans where murders have occurred. The museum’s young professionals auxiliary group, Society 1858, raises the funds to support the annual $10,000 prize and related expenses, including the website and artist archive on www.1858prize.org.
