Glossary ABSTRACT
MINIATURES
RESTORATION
A style of art that uses shapes, colors, and lines to create a work of art that captures feelings and might not look like a person, a place, or anything specific.
Very small paintings of people that someone might have worn as a necklace or carried in a pocket.
A way to repair a work of art, or even a frame, that is damaged.
GALLERIES In a museum, large or small rooms that are used to display works of art.
IMPRESSIONISM A style of art that tries to show the feeling or impression of a single moment in time. Artists often use thick, short brushstrokes to create these works of art because they are painting quickly.
LANDSCAPES An artwork that shows places such as the beach, county, or mountains.
OILS A type of paint that artists have used for hundreds of years where pigments (or powdered colors) are mixed with oil.
NATURALISM A style of art that realistically shows things from nature, such as animals or plants.
PORTRAIT A painting, drawing, photograph, or sculpture of a person.
SCULPTURE A 3D work of art that has a front, back, top, and bottom. If there’s enough room in the gallery, look at every side of a sculpture.
X-RAY A special picture of a painting used to see layers of paint or hidden markings. An X-Ray can be very helpful when trying to fix or restore a damaged work of art or when trying to understand the artist’s process.
ZENITH The high point, like the top of a dome.
