Lasting Impressions: Japanese Prints from the Read-Simms Collection The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to one of the earliest and most significant collections of Japanese woodblock prints in the Southeast. Lasting Impressions presents sixty exceptional and rare prints amassed by Charleston collector Motte Alston Read and his sister Mary Read Hume Simms of New Orleans during the first decades of the 20th century. The Read-Simms Collection reflects the full range of popular print subjects by master ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period, from famous Kabuki theater actors portrayed by Suzuki Harunobu and Tōshūsai Sharaku in the eighteenth century, to vibrant landscapes by Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai in the nineteenth century. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue featuring entries by Japanese fine art specialist, Sebastian Izzard Ph.D, and an in-depth essay on the collectors. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina and Artizom.

MAY 3 – 30, 2021

STUDIO ONE

STUDIO TWO

Camela Guevara is a fiber artist and painter from Charleston. She creates handmade monuments to unsung labor, as well as expressive paintings in gouache seeking to create dream-like worlds using amorphous forms and transparent washes to create a healing modality in which to process emotions in vivid colors. During her residency, Guevara will merge her two practices of sewing and painting while engaging Museum visitors by asking them to rethink their connection to cloth. Guevara has exhibited at Greenville Center for Creative Arts, North Charleston City Hall, Virago Gallery, and at Redux Contemporary Art Center.

Inspired by the natural world at an early age, Francis Sills spent his childhood drawing and constructing things out of cardboard. His ongoing series "The flora" utilizes flowers and plants from his home garden. During his residency, the artist will continue augmenting the reality of the flora through set ups, which both multiply the forms and fracture the space. Museum visitors will encounter paintings that begin to grow alongside the plants and flowers in front of them. Sills is an adjunct faculty member at the College of Charleston where he teaches drawing and painting. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and his work is in many private collections.
