UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS A Shared Legacy: Folk Art in America JANUARY 19 – APRIL 15, 2018 | Galleries 8 & 9 Member Preview THURSDAY, JANUARY 18 | 6PM Fellows | 7PM All Members Created by innovative, self-taught artists, A Shared Legacy tells the story of the extraordinary art made between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the United States experienced enormous political, social, and cultural change. Drawn from the renowned collection of Maryland resident Barbara L. Gordon, the exhibition showcases rare objects, from vivid genre paintings, to whimsical trade signs and animal sculptures, to distinctive examples of the German-American furniture tradition. Highlights include rare paintings by Edward Hicks, Ammi Phillips, and John Brewster, Jr., among others. This exhibition is drawn from the Barbara L. Audiovisual artists Myth of an Atom will perform with DJ Fallen Atom at Society 1858’s annual Winter Party. American Furniture: Craftsmanship and Conservation WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31 | 6PM

Christopher Swan is senior conservator of wooden artifacts at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia. Swan will share insights on traditional materials and construction techniques, and discuss technological advancements that impact the field of furniture conservation. His talk will feature examples that relate to works on view from the Barbara L. Israel-born architect Moshe Safdie has designed striking cultural, civic, and educational buildings around the world. Safdie’s exceptional structures include the expansion of Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Among his current projects is the National Medal of Honor Museum, designed for Patriot’s Point in Mount Pleasant. MARY MAY, wood carver FEBRUARY 6 – 17 Mary May is a European-trained wood and stone carver, specializing in antique furniture details, classical architecture, and fine decorations for homes, businesses, and churches. Located on Johns Island, May holds workshops throughout the US and Europe, and has an online woodcarving school with 3,500 students across the globe. The techniques of her craft are well-represented in The Rivers Collection of Southern Decorative Art and the Folk Art in America exhibition on view at the Museum.

MARY JACKSON, mixed-media artist THURSDAY, JANUARY 25 | 10–11:30AM WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 | 10–11:30AM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 | 10–11:30AM Mary Jackson is an internationally-recognized master of sweetgrass basketry. A recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship (commonly referred to as the MacArthur Genius Grant) in 2008, and many awards since then, Jackson’s work is in major collections around the world and is prized by collectors and scholars alike. Jackson will demonstrate the Gullah tradition of sweetgrass basketry, one of the oldest art forms of African origin.

FRANCISCA PALAZUELOS, printmaker FEBRUARY 20 – MAY 18 A native of Santiago de Chile, Francisca Palazuelos has lived in Mexico, Spain, and several cities in the United States. Now residing in Charleston, she uses traditional woodcut techniques to translate memories of past experiences—transporting the viewer to lush oceanside landscapes or mountainous terrains. Her residency is in partnership with the College of Charleston School of the Arts.

TOM STANLEY, painter FEBRUARY 28 – APRIL 6 Tom Stanley’s work relies upon personal memory, an interest in contemporary folk art imagery, and hands-on experiences as points of artistic departure. During his residency Stanley will draw on themes from the folk art exhibition, A Shared Legacy, and will create a new series of works reinforcing the concept of a “conversation” that occurs between an artist’s knowledge, eyes, and hands.

Color with Pastel TUESDAYS JANUARY 23, 30, FEBRUARY 6, 13, 20, AND 27 | 10AM–1PM How do artists “see” so many colors in the marsh, or the sky, or in a simple white flower? Join artist Tammy Papa and learn how to “see” color like an artist. Students will go beyond blue skies and green grass to bring color to otherwise humdrum pastel paintings. Charles Williams Collaborative: Portfolio Builder (ages 12–18) SATURDAYS, FEB 10, 24, MARCH 10, 24, APRIL 17, 21, MAY 5 AND 19 | 10AM–12:30PM OR 2–4:30PM Artist Charles Williams will guide students by teaching foundational technical skills, portfolio prep, business skills, networking development, and instruction on gaining financial support to further the student’s education. Whether developing basic drawing skills or advancing existing skills, this class is adapted to the level of each individual. Learn to see what is in front of you and translate that into line drawings. Refresh your skills and move beyond the line to value drawing. Taught by Lese Corrigan of Corrigan Gallery. Jewelry-making Workshop: Flower-Drop Lariat Necklace SATURDAY, MARCH 3 | 10AM–12NOON

Maria Hutzler of Pompey Glass will teach students to make a necklace designed to be worn two ways: as a long lariat or a symmetrical necklace with flattering drop. Each necklace will feature a lampwork glass flower created by the instructor. Students will be able to customize their necklace by choosing different colors of beads or chain. If time permits, students can also make a matching pair of earrings. All materials are included in the cost of tuition. $60 Members | $75 Non-Members

Beginning Acrylic or Oil Painting WEDNESDAYS, MARCH 21, 28, AND APRIL 4 | 6–8PM

This introductory level class with Stephen Herchak will cover basic composition, color theory, color mixing, blending, brushwork, and application of paint. Anyone can take great photos! Joyce Weir of Charleston Photo Tours will share tips and techniques to take great pictures with your smartphone.
