Lying in Wait celebrates the illustrious career of nationally-known, sporting art and landscape painter, Ogden Pleissner. His hunting, fishing, and landscape paintings reflect his deep reverence for wildlife and the natural world. The paintings on view depict scenes from Wyoming to Maine to the South Carolina coast and date from the late 1920s until his death in 1983. This exhibition is organized by Shelburne Museum. Anna Heyward Taylor: Intrepid Explorer JANUARY 18 – MAY 12, 2019 | Gallery 9 Anna Heyward Taylor: Intrepid Explorer brings together for the first time the renowned Charleston Renaissance artist’s stunning watercolors, batiks, and woodblock prints inspired by her adventurous travels in British Guiana, marking the life of a truly remarkable artist, scientist, and explorer.

IMAGE The Way Home (detail), 1936, by Anna Heyward Taylor (American, 1879–1956); watercolor on paper; 22 3/8 x 15 1/4 inches; Gift of the artist; 1953.007.0013.

New Acquisitions Featuring Works by African American Artists FEBRUARY 22 – JUNE 16, 2019 Galleries 2 & 3

IMAGE The Katastwóf Karavan (maquette), 2017, by Kara Walker (American, b. 1969); painted laser-cut stainless steel; 9 1/8 x 14 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches; Museum purchase; 2018.001.

Featuring artworks by African American artists acquired over the last ten years by the Gibbes for its permanent collection, this exhibition reflects on the Museum’s collecting efforts since the landmark exhibition Prop Master: An Installation by Juan Logan and Susan Harbage Page in 2009. The provocative installation was designed to highlight the role the Gibbes plays in shaping social norms and reinforcing power structures based on what it chooses to collect and exhibit and, perhaps more importantly, what works and narratives are excluded.
