Manning Williams: Reinventing Narrative Painting Manning Williams’s paintings are rooted in the history, traditions, and terrain of the South Carolina Lowcountry. A Charleston native and lifelong resident, Williams earned degrees from the College of Charleston and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His highly personal approach to realist painting emphasized storytelling and was fueled by an interest in portraying subjects that he found on the periphery of the city and along the barrier islands. Western subjects also commanded Williams’s attention, and during the later years of his career his concern with narrative was expressed in a more abstract style. Reinventing Narrative Painting is the first major retrospective of the artist’s work since his death, featuring thirty paintings that span his more than forty year career. This exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Evening Post Publishing and will travel to the Morris Museum of Art Augusta, GA. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, The Post and Courier, Jane Smith Turner Foundation, Anson Restaurant, Law Office of Kathryn M. Cockrill, LLC, The Gable Foundation, and Bank of America.

In Body and Soul: The Figure in Modernist Photography Drawn from the Robert Marks Collection this exhibition features thirty photographs by renowned 20th century photographers. From Alfred Stieglitz’s intimate composite portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe to Lewis Hines’s depictions of American laborers, modernist-era photographers radically shifted how the human body was captured on film and for what purpose. Employing a variety of techniques from cropping and zooming, to distortion and framing, photographers explored the human figure for social, performative, voyeuristic, and documentary purposes. Highlights include the work of Stieglitz, Hines, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, George Platt Lynes, and László Moholy-Nagy. MUSEUM FELLOWS

Entering the 12th year, this Prize has awarded over $120,000 to artists as well as implemented a new initiative to display one work by the Prize Winner in the Mary Jackson Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries within the Gibbes for one year. How It Was… Charleston in 1963 Watercolor paintings by past Visiting Artist Andrea Hazel Andrea Hazel's watercolor series entitled How it Was...Charleston in 1963, depicts scenes of homes and communities that have been demolished and displaced in the wake of Charleston's rapid growth and development. The works are based on photographs from the South Carolina Department of Transportation collection of photos in the early 1960's. Andrea Hazel was an artist in residence October 26 – November 22, 2020.
Mementos Entwined: The Sentimental Art of Hairwork by past Visiting Artist Gina Iacovelli Gina Iacovelli's work draws upon the concept of the “Memento Mori”, exploring the deeply rooted connection between life-death, and the sentimental tokens we hold dear. The primary medium in her work is human hair, a flexible, translucent fiber that will far outlive the being from which it came. Delicate and ethereal, yet resilient and corporeal, it calls attention to the brevity of life, while reminding us that our essence can live on in the memory of others. Gina Iacovelli was an artist in residence October 26 – November 22, 2020.
The Visiting Artist Series is supported by Art Mag, SC Arts Commission, Society 1858, Gibbes Women’s Council, and the Henry and Sylvia Yaschik Foundation. For more information about the Visiting Artist series and to apply, visit gibbesmuseum.org/programs-events/visiting-artist.
