2013/14 School Calendar 2012/13 Annual Report
Congratulations to our 2013 graduates. We wish you all the best as you move on to the school of your choice.
D The Giddens School calendar showcases student art. Art is an integral component of the Giddens classroom. Students have dedicated time each week to make connections between art, social justice and science. We call this Integrated Studies, as this combination of learning experiences allows students to create connections between content areas. Our Integrated Studies Specialist works alongside teachers to plan, teach, and celebrate the excitement that comes from exploring our artistic, social and scientific minds and bodies.
ear Families and Friends,
As I look at the pages of this calendar, I feel truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful school. This is my fortieth year in education, and Giddens is my dream school and a great place for me to wind up my career. I say this for several reasons. First and foremost are the people with whom I work. Every day I marvel at our truly amazing children at work and at play. They are kind, respectful, creative, and intelligent. They are diverse and are learning from the adults and each other how to be tolerant, empathetic, and advocates for themselves and others. This lesson can only be learned in a community that is diverse racially, culturally, economically, and in family structure. The staff with whom the children interact daily are also remarkable. They are dedicated, passionate, and caring, and work closely with one another to ensure that all children are thriving and learning. A quality that jumps out of the pages of this calendar is how creative our children are. I spent time this summer with a friend who is a bio-chemist who studies brains. When I told him about the approach to education at Giddens School, he affirmed that such an approach is brain-friendly. Creativity is a key ingredient for brain growth and utilization. Allowing children to think creatively about engaging problems allows the brain to increase neuron connections and thereby increase capacity. These words and pictures demonstrate the creative level of our children and how we are truly developing their brains. Another quality of the children is the way they are able to speak about what they are learning, doing, and thinking in ways that allow them to communicate effectively with their peers and adults. They are learning to be advocates for social justice and are learning the skills to improve the world around them. As you look over the calendar, I hope you can appreciate the words and faces that describe our amazing Giddens children, who are growing and thriving. Thank you all for your support of time and resources. If you have any comments or questions, please contact us. Sincerely, Robert

This mural, created for St. Mary’s Food Bank by the class of 2014 5th grade, depicts some of the nutritious, tasty food that Giddens kids help the food bank distribute to the community.
Giddens School provides an academically excellent curriculum enriched with a commitment to critical thinking and social responsibility. Staff and families create a community that nourishes diversity, sense of self, and love of learning.
