Beijer Electronics All Around the World

Sustainability Can be Profitable by David Pan

Two polarized views on sustainability

Denmark - Once again the team from Denmark participates in the marathon run.

Germany- Beijer Electronics’ TREQ-VMx beat 86 applicants to become ‘best mobile terminal’ category winner at 2013 Telematik Award.

Korea - Beijer Electronics received a lot of acclaim at the OFFSHORE exhibition

When the term ‘sustainability’ is mentioned in the context of business today, there seem to be two opposite, polar views on the subject. Those who are for it and state that it also gives the company a competitive edge. Those who oppose it think it’s a drain on a company’s resources and can at best only lead to good PR for the company. Doesn’t matter which side one stands on, the concept of sustainability in business has become quite a trend and hot topic today in business, with many viewing it as an integral part of a company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) efforts. For many, the notion of sustainability was probably first brought to their attention with the signing of the Kyoto protocol in 1997, an international treaty where industrialized nations set binding commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The debate over each country’s position, especially that of the US caused many subsequent reporting all around the world. The topic of climate change was brought into the limelight thanks to former American Vice-President Al Gore’s Oscar award winning documentary The Inconvenient Truth, which gives a very dramatic and convincing case for climate change, has really given the cause weight and momentum. Mr. Gore received a Nobel Prize for his activism in climate change. The movement has spread globally and people all around the world are either thinking about how they can participate or debating about it’s legitimacy (Please see Fig. 1). Since then many companies in Taiwan have began to engage in sustainability practices, many have won awards locally and internationally for their efforts. Taiwanese governments also responded from a local and national level with events, campaigns and policies. Most recently the documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above, which was shot entirely with aerial photography. The documentary not only showcase the beautiful natural landscapes of Taiwan, it also presented most vividly the impact of rapid development and industrializa-

tion to the nature of the Island. The film became a hit, and convinced even more people around the Island on the importance of sustainability.

Global shift to sustainability Over the last decade, companies have started adopting sustainability initiatives in their companies. According to Governance & Accountability Institute (G&A), 53% of S&P 500 companies published ESG/CSR/sustainability reports in 2011, compared to only 19 percent in 2010. “The benefits of sustainability reporting are becoming increasingly obvious over time and the long-term benefits of adopting sustainability strategies and reporting on performance become easier to measure and quantify." said G&A Chairman Hank Boerner. Even though the global economy is still recovering from the 2008 crash, the trend towards sustainability projects and reporting is partly driven by increase in government regulations. This shift for more government oversight and accountability is caused partly by the financial crisis. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is one such driver behind his trend, urging policy makers around the world to tackle such issues. In the 2013 UNEP report Carrot and Stick, there has been a 3 fold growth in sustainability reporting between 2006 and 2013. For companies, this means that if not yet started, now is perhaps the time to start studying the possibilities of implementing.

Can sustainability be profitable?

Beijer Electronics’ road to sustainability

According to the Harvard Business Review article ‘Why Sustainability Is Now the Key Driver of Innovation’, taking on sustainability lowers cost because companies end up reducing the inputs they use. The revised process could also generate additional revenues from superior products which result in new businesses.

Headquartered in Malmo, Sweden, and operating within the EU, Beijer Electronics naturally have to comply within some of the toughest environmental policies and regulations. The whole range of iX products are consciously made with sustainability set in mind. Aside from how the products were being made, through feedback from our customers, we have discovered that through our iX solutions to make our customers run more efficiently, many of them have viewed these efforts as their sustainability ventures. As you will read in the following pages, the Korean Photovoltaic power solution provider DNE (Page10) reported since implementing iX solutions, it has reduced it’s after service cost by more than 40%. Taiwan’s first western medicine hospital Sin-Lau hospital reports it is able to reduce it’s electricity usage by more then 9% with iX solutions.

The global courier delivery service company FedEx has taken on sustainability not only as a part of it’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. FedEx believes in the benefits of sustainability so much it has launched EarthSmart and turned it into a profit center. Since launching, FedEx has replaced it’s old aircrafts to Boeing 757s, because it will reduce fuel consumption by 36% while increasing capacity by 20%, it also developed 30 software programs that help optimize aircraft schedule, flight routes and the amount of extra fuel on board. FedEx also setup a 1.5 megawatt solar-energy system at it’s distribution hubs in California and Cologne. The company also started using hybrid vans that are 42% more fuel efficient than conventional trucks and has replaced more than 25% of its fleet with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. FedEx even launched a website (earthsmart.van.fedex.com) filled with information, even video games to report and educate the public on it’s sustainability efforts.

After receiving these in the field reports from our customers, we discovered there is one type of sustainability every company should embrace (Fig. 2). That is through the advancement in technology, the better management of our world’s limited resources, and reducing our inputs. Best of all, these efforts not only make a company run more efficiently, it also helps reduce unnecessary cost (which some say is the best way to profits). This helps us become a more responsible member of our global community.

www.beijerelectronics.com.tw Success Story: Taiwan’s Sin-Lau Hospital Madou

We are a Global Family

Innovating with Taiwan’s Oldest Medical Institution by Etong Chen & David Pan photographed by Rich Matheson & Oscar Sun Founded in 1865, Sin-Lau Hospital was established by Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell, the first Presbyterian missionary in Taiwan. Sin-Lau Hospital played a very important role of Taiwan’s medical history, where western medicine began in Taiwan, and the site of Taiwan’s first modern nurse training center. The Madou branch of Sin-Lau Hospital was established in 1997 for better service to the people in the suburbs of Tainan City.

China - The team returns excited from the sprint team building retreat

In order to last the tradition of Sin-Lau Hospital that provided the best health care to its patients, its proper functioning of the hospital’s vital services, which consist of hydro, water supply, ventilation, fire protection, alarm systems, all played a vital role in the day to day operations. Traditionally these systems had to be monitored separately and manually. In order to manage these vital services more effectively in one central system, Sin-Lau Hospital required a solution that can combine separate system into a single central operating system.

Power of Scandinavian design Sin-Lau Hospital was first drawn to the Scandinavian esthetic design of the iX HMI panels and its sturdy aluminum exterior. Besides, it’s beautiful graphical operating interface and

simple software attract Madou Sin-Lau Hospital’s favor. With the full support of superintendent, Mr. Huang, Tzuu-Yuan, the budget of this project was quickly approved and the project team was able to make all decisions on its planning、 design and implementation. The system controls and monitors the building infrastructure of the two main buildings: The hospital itself (which contains 12 floors) and the staff housing building (14 floors). A total of 7 stations with operator panels were setup throughout the two buildings. One of the biggest challenges during implementation was to find the right time frame to make system changes, due to the hospital’s need to always stay on power and stay functioning. “The best advantage of the iX system is steadiness and intuitive operating interface. It has provided us a way to automate all of the system’s workflow” says the group leader Mr. Lin, Yu-Ren. The new iX system could not only easily collect all the data across different systems into one central system but also allows operators to monitor and operate the system on the internet through smartphone or tablet devices. Besides, it really helps Madou Sin-Lau Hospital to enhance the work efficiency and shorten the downtime.

US - Happy to finally move into new office building, after a lot of hard work.

Taiwan - Happy to step out into nature for a day of bonding and strategizing. Madou Sin-Lau hospital’s team: (from left) Chung-Hsin Lee, Yu-Ren Lin, Tzuu-Yuan Huang, Tsung-Chi Lin, Ming-Te Hsieh, Cheng-Hung Lin.

Beautiful synergy between hardware and software

Conserving energy and budget Aside from using it to manage the daily operation of vital services at the hospital, Madou Sin-Lau Hospital also took advantage of iX’s software and processing power to record power consumption, humidity and temperature for future analysis and forecast. Through analysis, they can establish more prevention mechanism to manage the hospital resources. Allowing the hospital to reduce consumption and lowering operational cost to allocate funding into more needed medical-related business. Madou SinLau Hospital is currently planning to extend the iX system into its nursing home Building, which will be opened in 2015. “We are very appreciated of the reliability of Beijer Electronic’s iX system and all the technical support provided by Beijer Electronics distributor Tsung Chi Lin’s Wei-Xiang InterNational CO., Ltd.,” says the leader Mr. Lin, Yu-Ren. When he was asked, why Madou Sin-Lau Hospital keeps on choosing the Beijer Electronic’s iX system He answered; “Well, we do the right decision; select the reliable system, everything we do is all for providing better quality care to our patients.”

Success Story: Korea’s Dynamic New Energy

HMI Panels New Solar Energy Businesses Trust by Etong Chen & David Pan with photographs provided by DNE

Korean solar energy provider DNE implements iX solutions to greatly reduce after service time & costs

DNE (Dynamic New Energy) is a leading photovoltaic (PV) power solution provider in Korea, installing and operating PV generation systems for a diverse list of clients, ranging from energy providers, government institutions, corporations, ecological learning centers and parks. In the last three years, DNE installed over 240 PV power sites and harvested more than 16,858 kW of solar energy. “We were looking for something to replace our previous system, which we felt was not reliable and had limited expandability” says Mr. David Kim, President of DNE. Mr. Kim found that Beijer Electronics’ hardware was well designed and robustly built to withstand the outdoor environments where they are installed. Mr. Kim adds, “If something is not working properly, this means a trip on-site, and some of them are quite far away, so we needed something stable we could count on.” The three main deciding factors for choosing iX HMI solution were hardware, software and system expandability. DNE needed the hardware to be sturdy and trustworthy, the software to be user-friendly and the system to be expandable for the future. DNE also liked that iX HMI solution is built on the open .NET platform, making it easily

Improved Features Raises the Bar expandable. The wide array of pre-designed modules also made designing the HMI project much easier: “The team from Beijer Electronics really helped us with figuring out how to implement the system as well as ensuring that the project was completed within our budget.” says Mr. Kim. Compared to the old system, DNE found that Beijer Electronics’ system provided a significantly high return on investment.

Customized solution and service Using the existing wide list of PLC drivers available for the iX panels, Beijer Electronic’s Taiwan engineering team wrote an exclusive iX driver to communicate with the KACO solar inverters used by DNE. After the driver was created, Beijer Electronics engineers went on-site in Korea to support the testing and implementation. For the software, Beijer Electronics provided DNE with a specially tailored training program on how to take advantage of the smart features and functionalities offered by iX HMI. The biggest challenge faced was the collecting and sending of data from the HMI to the web server. The large amount of data needed to be transmitted quickly to the central server to allow for external analysis; users on the client side need access to view and understand the live data online. The whole process took eight months to complete, from the custom driver to the finished HMI project.

More reliable and user friendly DNE was very happy not only with the reliability of Beijer Electronic’s panels, they also liked that the information was collected faster. Instead of the data being displayed as text and numbers (as it was previously) it is now displayed with charts and icons, making it easier and faster to understand the data. Mr. Kim adds “with the improvement in reliability, our after service task was made much easier.”

DNE control screen

In the ever-changing intelligence driven world, automated systems have had great progress in recent years. This change has affected the productivity of human to machine communication and has always helped bridge itself with Human-Machine Interface (HMI), Beijer Electronics Technology R&D George Lin pointed out that the industry is mainly looking for hardware specifications that is in sync with both the current technologies and market demand, with the hopes that there will be growth in these two areas.

Demand drives for a widely diverse size of applications Due to the diverse needs and the trends for applications, panel size for the machines has also had an increase in the different sizes, its respective applications are also different. On the current market situation, HMIs come in display sizes from four to 21 inches, built on three different CPUs to offer a competitive solution for every type of application. The smaller iX TxA models run on an ARM9 CPU and offer a highly cost-efficient solution with solid HMI functionality for small and medium-sized applications. The mid-range iX TxB models, running on the powerful Intel® Atom CPU, deliver high performance suitable for medium to large HMI applications, requiring handling of more data and utilizing more functionality. With the iX TxC series, built on the Intel® iCore CPU, Beijer Electronics takes HMI to the industrial PC level, delivering a wide range of connectivity options and high performance for larger projects. All models feature high-resolu-

tion displays, several in wide screen format and the largest model, the 21-inch iX TxC, even supports full HD. This is all to keep in line with customer demand for a variety of projects

Metal is the best choice for HMI In addition to the internal specifications, the outer shells of HMI are also very important. Currently, most HMI products are made of plastic shell material and are not as robust as metal. Plus, the appearance of the user interface needs to be considered, including its texture, robustness, and EMC. In terms of texture, because the HMI is the main component in the user operations automation system, its metal frame material may help raise the users’ awareness for texture and impression of the overall system. As for the robustness, due to the nature of the environment where collisions often happen in the production system, more robust specialty metals can effectively protect the body's internal components, reducing damage caused by collision. As for EMC, metallic materials can effectively prevent external electromagnetic waves, since the manufacturing equipment act more like a motor drive means such devices when starting up, will release a large amount of electromagnetic waves. Plus the quality of the metal outer shells can block out such electromagnetic waves increasing the stability of the HMI. Beijer Electronics because of these important considerations, iX HMI body shell will be made of aluminum alloy material, greatly enhancing the effectiveness of the above.

Success Story: National Library of Sweden

The Right Climate for Swedish Cultural Treasures by Per Eriksson / photographed by Johnér.se & Marcus Gyllander

National Library of Sweden integrated iX solutions to it’s existing mechanical and electrical equipment to increase energy efficiency, reducing costs.

The National Library of Sweden in central Stockholm is an important part of Swedish cultural heritage. Since the year 1661, the library has collected more or less everything printed in Sweden or in the Swedish language. In addition to all the printed materials, this state agency now functions as the national archive of audiovisual media. In the fall of 2011, the National Property Board, which manages the historic building, commenced an extensive renovation. The collaboration between the National Library and the Swedish National Archive of Recorded Sound and Moving Images has meant additional employees and increased burden on the indoor environment. “We want to create more efficient office space and more visitor-friendly premises while the climate, which is flawed at the moment, will be improved” said Ulf Tomner, Property Manager at the National Property Board in conjunction with the renovation. Today, the new system for building automation made by the Swedish integrator Nordomatic with key products from Beijer Electronics is mostly installed and operational. Only the final stage of the project still remains.

Beijer Electronic’s HMI Software Exceeds required demands Christian Wisén is Marketing & Sales Manager at Nordomatic, which has been active in the area of building automation for more than 40 years. He can testify to good collaboration with Beijer Electronics over the years.

HMI Software That is Truly Open by Ming-De Wang

“Museum and library buildings require extrahigh standards for indoor climate in order that the collections are not damaged. Our goal is to project, design and install building automation that exceeds requirements.” Under a performance contract, Nordomatic previously modernized and expanded the control and monitoring technical systems for heating, cooling, HVAC, lighting control and process system at the National Museum. That project also built on technology from Beijer Electronics. “The clients appreciated the results so much that they requested the same technology in the National Library.”

Both secure and easy to use The delivery to the National Library includes PLCs from Mitsubishi Electric Q family (Q03 and Q06 models). The approximately 2000 I/O points from the Crevis selection are also from the Beijer Electronics catalog. “The SCADA system, along with Beijer Electronics’ proprietary graphic HMI software iX facilitates daily use as well as maintenance and service.” Great care has been taken to ensure accessibility and make the system immune to operational disruptions. For example, should communication with the main computer be disrupted, local operation will not be hindered. The new automation solution does not only control the building’s indoor climate and humidity by controlling the heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Integrated in the system are also lighting and elevator surveillance.

A cost-effective modernization The old building automation system that has been phased out dated back to the then-largest redevelopment of the library in the 1990s. It was then that the ground beneath the library was excavated in order to create new storage areas. Channels as well as fans, pumps and assemblies for humidification, among other things, have been for the most part retained from that period. The parts that have been changed – in addition to the system’s intelligence - are cabinets, sensors and motor controls. All heating and cooling systems have been equipped with energy meters. “It is not necessary to tear out all the old equipment” emphasizes Christian Wisén, explaining that the improvements of indoor climate and energy savings are the results of refined control.

Both secure and easy to use The main purpose of the iX HMI software is to create a professional user interface that is easy to use and understand by taking advantage of a component library. The components use vector based graphics and can be scaled and rotated while maintaining their superior quality. Designed specifically for the automation industry, iX creates a consistent look and feel among products, graphics and environments by offering intuitive design features for programmers and non-programmers alike. Intuitive and user-friendly environment with ribbon tabs, templates, styles and format painters to design, simulate and run your HMI application. iX offers an integrated work flow where design and functionality, screens and projects are managed effectively within the same user friendly environment from project start to finished application.

The hardware and software in one single system Integrated hardware and software products have many advantages, including lower development costs, reduced maintenance time, as well as the advantage of system upgrades to meet demand. Beijer Electronics Software Engineering Division, manager Serman Liu mentions that since the company's hardware and software architecture is designed by the company, then the overall software development costs can be divided early in the design visualization phase. Comparing this with human machine systems where the hardware and software are separated, the combined options tend to have a lower cost. In addition, when equipment fails, Beijer Electronics hardware and software maintenance engineers can look at both ends of the technology, allowing you to quickly diagnose where the problem lies. When the device needs an upgrade, you can assess

the needs of the software and hardware simultaneously at both ends and let the system upgrade quickly.

C# language for flexible software The .NET technology is a well-established standard, there are many skilled developers in the market and there is a wide range of third-party components that are ready for our customers to use. Add to this the capability for own scripting in C#, and the development time is shortened both for us and our customers. Liu Quan Xun noted that Beijer Electronics iX HMI editing software using C# allows the main feature in the project developer to be C# syntax, which can be written directly into the software, as long as you have the ability to write in C#, project developers can make changes, updates, and install desired functions into the system. In addition, there are a lot of global software designers and manufacturers ready to invest in developing the use of C # language, so whenever developers encounter problems, Beijer Electronics can provide not only assistance, but also the ability to identify a similar model from the market, and then fine-tune or rewrite it. This is naturally reflected in costs, Serman says and adds that Beijer Electronics is investing in iX in all markets worldwide and for all future levels of operator panels. This is equivalent to having a huge global technical support team, allowing developers to easily accessible technology. In addition, iX software has direct horizontal transfer function, which is part of the common features, making rewrites unnecessary, it only needs to be designed for specific office applications. This approach can continue to accumulate design experience, so that the latest design will allow for rapid improvements, sustainable development, and shorten the time to market allowing the system to improve product competitiveness.
