SERVING ATLANTA WITH STYLE

Pit Stop Sanitation

Pit Stop is a well-established Atlanta institution in portable restroom rental services. The company has served every need from public events to construction site services throughout the metro area for over 30 years. About 20 years ago, Brett Roques, Owner, Pit Stop Sanitation company, was a kid who came to work in the office for a week or so when Pit Stop was a budding service business. Today, under Roques leadership, the enterprise has more than doubled the

size of its team, unit inventory, and service vehicle fleet.

Back when Roques came in to do that temporary admin support work, he was a student studying for an exam called Charter Financial Analysis. During that week, he helped at Pit Stop with typical entry-level bookkeeping, like reconciling bank statements and other general office tasks. As it turned out, that was his introduction to the bustling, highly competitive industry in which he would ultimately build his highly

successful entrepreneurial career.

Bret, still young today, the owner of a thriving company (at just 38 years old) recalls the history: I ended up working for the previous owners for about 5 years. I don’t think I truly understood what could lie ahead. I'm still super close with the previous owners. I remember the first months and years. They were paying a lot of bills, big bills, every month. That was eye-opening for me at that age. I learned about the

industry and about small business management. By the time it became an option for me, I felt comfortable enough to purchase the business and run it myself, and the previous owners felt comfortable that I could do it. So, the business kinda found me.

Our service area covers about a 50-mile radius. We have about 15 service technicians. That number has doubled from around 8 since 1995. I’ve been at it for about 7 1/2 years. We have about 4 people working in the office, mostly fielding incoming calls, dispatching, getting people to the right places, providing quotes, etc. For bigger events or complications, the calls typically go to Amanda, my wife. She runs the office.

We have about 3,500 porta potty units. We’ve been cycling through them. We've bought a lot and sold a lot. The previous owners had about 2,000 units. We've replaced a lot of those. Right now, we run 20 service trucks, plus two regular flat beds, and 3 slide-in tanks. We have new trailer units with multiple stalls, and we

PIT STOP SANITATION QUALITY PORTABLE TOILET AND SINK UNITS

We get a lot of our porta potty inventory and sinks from Armal. We like their products and have been buying more of them. The quality of their stand-alone toilet units and sinks is excellent. They compare very well with other sanitation rental products we’ve used. And, through acquisitions of products I had seen the previous owners make over the years, I knew that they were clearly happy with the way the Armal units hold up over time.

Asked about the number of unique, exotically decorated units displayed on the Pit Stop website, Brett explains, they’re hand-painted by local high school students. We have ten of those. We do rent them. Some of the arts festival organizers really like them. For example, a couple of businesses

We got the idea for the assorted bright solid-colored units, also portrayed on the website, from the previous owners. I wanted to bring that idea back, so we have about 30 of each color that look good with our logo sticker. We use them to try to match environments or themes, where it’s fitting, for our customers.

The big trailer displayed on the products page of our website is a 10-stall restroom trailer with a big screen TV on the side. So, people can rent that, and a lot of things are covered by it in the backyard for big events, like football games, etc. You can park it in the cul-desac and have a big party.

MARKETING FOR PIT STOP SANITATION, ATLANTA GA

Our new rental sales are mostly from word-of-mouth, and we have the website, which is an important tool for us. As people are shopping around to see what is available, depending on what their needs are, they look online. We do get quite a bit of activity on the website. For example, Sunday afternoons are popular

Or, they may be thinking about their scheduling for next week and realize they didn’t arrange for a restroom for a group at a work site. We can respond to provide next-day delivery.

I’m willing to adjust to economic factors, to things going on in the world, and to things going on with my family, young kids, and with me, etc. I’m comfortable being at the level of growth the business is in right now. I’m not going to sign up for some explosive growth stage right now.

We’ve grown the business a lot. We’re happy with the company size that we have. We’re happy with the team we have. I don’t think we’re in it to force an aggressive growth rate. We do a lot of special events. In the Atlanta market, there is a lot of work in the movie industry for us, and in construction, etc. There's a lot of opportunity to build on by just staying the course we’re on and always getting better at the process of serving our customers.

ADVICE FOR INDUSTRY NEWCOMERS FROM BRETT ROQUES, OWNER, PIT STOP SANITATION, ATLANTA GA

The main lesson I think I’d share with people looking to start in this business is that it’s a lot harder than they may think it is. For just one example, your employees really are the backbone of the business. But, they have their own lives with families, including kids and parents, and challenges. They’re all doing everything they have to juggle the work and personal sides of their commitments. So, the company has to make sure it’s set up to support them through their life events.

When you put together a business plan, it’s easy to move numbers around and shake things up on paper and think very critically about it. But, it’s hard to think through the countless possibilities of things they may

have going on in their lives. So, the question becomes about how you should prepare to stand behind people during personal issues while preventing impacts on your business.

In other examples, things go wrong with trucks, equipment, etc., and you have to think in advance about how you and your team will respond resiliently to overcome those obstacles and maintain consistent service quality. It’s about how you’re going to respond to opportunities as well as adverse situations. For example, if you just charge a customer a lot, you may get that check one time, but if you prioritize being helpful and fair, then you have an opportunity to earn a lifetime customer.

You’ll need to think through circumstances as they present themselves, make sure you have a good team behind you of people who are willing to prioritize helping customers and their teammates over their own convenience throughout their work day. It’s easy for people to say, “I’ll take care of you, during an interview, but when it’s time to really do that, you want people with you who will follow through.”

EXPLORING ADVANCED INSPECTION

TECHNOLOGIES FOR SEWER LINES

THE INSPECTION OF SEWER LINES HAS COME A LONG WAY FROM TRADITIONAL METHODS. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING CONTRACTORS DIAGNOSE PROBLEMS MORE ACCURATELY, REDUCE COSTS AND INCREASE EFFICIENCY. FOR SEPTIC, SEWER AND PORTABLE RESTROOM CONTRACTORS, KEEPING UP WITH THESE INNOVATIONS IS NO LONGER JUST OPTIONAL. IT’S NECESSARY FOR STAYING COMPETITIVE.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most effective inspection technologies and how they’re changing the industry!

HIGH-DEFINITION CCTV CAMERAS

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been around for decades, but more recent advancements have greatly improved their capabilities. Modern highdefinition cameras provide clear visuals of the interior of sewer pipes, making it easier to identify cracks, blockages and root intrusions.

By combining video inspections with software that records and organizes data, contractors can also provide clients with detailed reports and recommendations.

These cameras are compact, durable and designed to navigate various pipe diameters. They allow contractors to pinpoint issues without digging up large sections of ground. ROBOTIC CRAWLER SYSTEMS

Robotic crawler systems are becoming a popular alternative for pipes that are too long, narrow or damaged for standard cameras. These systems can travel hundreds of feet into sewer lines and provide visuals in real time.

Laser profiling is another tool that’s changing the way

contractors assess sewer lines. By projecting a laser ring inside a pipethis system measures its diameter and detects deformations.

What makes crawlers unique is their maneuverability. Equipped with wheels or tracks, they can navigate bends, offsets and debris. Some models also have attachments for minor cleaning tasks to help contractors tackle small problems on the spot.

SONAR TECHNOLOGY FOR SUBMERGED PIPES

Not all sewer lines can be inspected visually. Pipes that are partially or fully submerged in water require a different approach. An effective solution for this is sonar technology, which uses sound waves to map the inside of a pipe.

Sonar systems can detect sediment buildup, blockages and structural damage even when visibility is zero. This technology is particularly useful in stormwater systems and older pipelines where flooding is common.

LASER PROFILING

Laser profiling is another tool that’s changing the way contractors assess sewer lines. By projecting a laser

ring inside a pipe, this system measures its diameter and detects deformations.

This technology is ideal for determining whether a pipe has shifted, sagged or collapsed over time.

Combined with other inspection methods, laser profiling provides a complete picture of a pipe’s condition and helps contractors decide on the best course of action.

DRONES FOR ABOVEGROUND INSPECTION

Sewer line inspection doesn’t always happen underground. Using drones for aboveground inspection is becoming more common, especially in areas that are hard to reach or pose safety risks. These drones can chart sewer layouts, pinpoint manholes and spot signs of leaks or erosion from overhead. As drone technology improves, contractors can now gather high-resolution images and videos more efficiently, cutting down on time and minimizing the reliance on manual surveys.

DATA INTEGRATION AND REPORTING TOOLS

Advanced inspection technologies generate large amounts of data, and managing this information can be overwhelming without the right tools. Software solutions now integrate inspection data, allowing contractors to store, analyze and share it in an efficient way.

Certain software solutions can generate detailed reports complete with visuals and recommendations, simplifying how contractors share their findings with clients. This transparency fosters trust and helps clients understand the extent of the work required.

BENEFITS OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES

The adoption of these inspection technologies goes beyond staying ahead of the curve — they directly

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE

As these technologies advance, contractors must invest in training and equipment to remain competitive. While the initial costs might feel high, the long-term advantages make it worth it. From streamlining

operations to building stronger customer trust, modern inspection tools are keeping contractors prepared for an evolving industry.

REVOLUTIONARY SEPTIC TANK

Grease Trap Water Filtration System

Introducing the Omega Water Recycling System

The extraordinary invention of Omega’s filtration technology enables septic tank and grease trap maintenance operators to pump-out the entire tank, filter the tank water onsite, and return it back into place. This new state-of-the-art system makes the cumbersome and costly traditional practice of hauling away mass quantities of wastewater from homes for dumping obsolete. It further

promotes healthier internal conditions of septic tanks for optimum long-term performance. The Omega technology has changed the game for northern operators and their customers with an incomparably cleaner and more costeffective sewage tank water handling process, and now it’s coming to US customers.

The extraordinary sewage water recirculation and

filtration technology is patented by Omega Liquid Waste Solutions, Quebec, Canada. The highly advanced system has been in use by septic service operators throughout the province and greater east-central Canada since it became available in 1998. Tony Vachon, Omega company founder and inventor of the remarkable technology, has led the production of the supremely streamlined,

sustainable, comprehensive solution. His Omega Septic and Grease Trap Service Truck with patented wastewater filtration system has made life much easier for Canadian septic tank pumpers and better for their customers.

In light of this advanced technology, the old costly and environmentally undesirable method of simply draining sewage water along with solids from septic tanks makes much less sense than in the past. Just hauling such vast volumes of wastewater away for dumping is no longer viable as a preferred approach. After all, as soon as a septic tank is drained, more sewage water simply fills the tank again very quickly. So, even in the short term, the benefits of just draining the tank for the customer are negligible, virtually zero, and it is a comparatively very expensive exercise to do. Taking away the tank water comes with a long list of other negative effects in addition to the high cost of collecting, hauling, and disposing of sewage

With the new approach, operators have only sludge to transport, no water.

water. For actual benefits to the property residents, it’s a meaningless gesture to drain the septic tank periodically. It’s much more beneficial on all points of service value assessment to filter the existing water and let it remain in place, removing only the solids. The solids are the only relevant contents of the tank in terms of removal to maintain an appropriate balance of flora in the containment.

BENEFITS OF OMEGA MOBILE SEWER WATER FILTRATION

Recirculating septic tank water through the intensive sewage filtration process invented by Vachon, and allowing the water to stay in the tank, results in a wide range of important benefits. Since, about 75% of the content of a septic tank is water and 25% is sludge, an operator can only do a couple of customers’ tanks before having to stop servicing, drive to a disposal site, and then come back to continue servicing tanks. With the new approach, operators have only sludge to transport, no water. That enables the septic maintenance technician to service up to 5 times more customers than the traditional way. In addition to exceptional revenue increases, operating costs are significantly reduced for fuel, truck maintenance and repair, labor hours, dumping fees, administrative expenses, lost new sales, and other expenses.

OMEGA LWS SEWER WATER FILTRATION –HOW IT WORKS

Tony explains in simple terms the complex functioning of Omega’s patented sewage filtration device, "Conventional pumpers empty grease traps, for example, and transport the debris along with the entire sewage volume to a dump site or treatment plant. Our idea was to leave the wastewater behind. So, the system we’ve developed has a two-compartment vacuum tank.

Further, technician health and safety risks, quality of work life for septic service operators, adverse environmental impact, and other aspects of functioning in the industry are improved. The groundbreaking sewage filtration technology also enhances the short- and long-term performance of customers’ septic systems, saves them money for property maintenance, and helps them do their part in promoting a greener future.

When the operator sees that no water remains in the tank, he can push a sludge button and all sludge will be transitioned to the front. The septic tank will be fully empty at the filtration stage. We then take the water from the water compartment at the back of the truck and pump it, filtered to 100 microns, back into the septic tank. The entire process happens very fast, in only about 5 minutes."

Even in Omega’s patented filter system, as Tony explains, a big problem is that the grease and fibrous matter in sewage will naturally clog any type of filter, “The difference is that ours spins at 2,300 RPMs.

Simultaneously, pulsation from the inside to the outside is initiated to keep the system clean. The filtration process is conducted at close to ultrasound frequency.

The extremely high frequency of the pulsating is very close to the membrane, which has a dislodging effect that prevents clogging. That’s how a vacuum can keep the sewage filtration system, with its very tough stainless steel heavy-duty membrane, so clean. At perforations in the steel of only 100 microns in diameter, the holes are too small to see with the unaided eye. They are laser drilled through 1/8 inch thick stainless steel.

The recirculated tank water becomes very clear, about 99% clear. We have removed all the solids from the water. But, we have preserved all the important bacteria. That’s good for the owner of the septic tank, enabling the tank to maintain its bacterial flora.”

THE TRADITIONAL SERVICE MODEL –EMPTYING SEPTIC TANKS

Omega Marketing Manager, George Bally, observes, “Although there are, of course, regulations imposing standards on the septic services industry, it is astonishing to see how unregulated some key processes continue to be.” He emphasizes that the more operators know about technology to make their jobs easier, their work faster, safer, cheaper, and cleaner, the better value they can provide to property owners.

Educating the industry and the septic system

owners about the advanced Omega septic water filtration technology goes a long way to help bring this better approach to US customers nationwide. More and more grease trap and septic tank customers are realizing the multiple major benefits of filtering wastewater and recirculating it back into their trap or tank using the Omega technology, without any negative effect on the performance of their systems.

BOOTH 3137

The entire North American market may be increasingly closer to a time when the traditional way of pumping septic tanks eventually becomes illegal. As government regulators come around to the vast environmental and safety advantages of cleansing vs. hauling such extreme amounts of sewer water, it just makes sense that the more practical way will, at some point, become required.

PATENT HOLDERS – OMEGA SEPTIC TANK WATER FILTERING SYSTEM

Tony Vachon is a Chemical Engineer. Looking back, he explains how the Omega invention was born. “I started my career working for a company that imports filtration systems for the pulp and paper industry. In that kind of production, there is a lot of water going into processes and a lot of filtration and self-cleaning systems that

involve large quantities of paper fiber, which clog the equipment. When fiber goes through, the system can’t remove it automatically.

My brother had a company in the transportation industry. He brought materials from Quebec to California to start a septic tank service business. Everybody competing in that market had old trucks and old equipment already paid for, so they could cut the price. So, our perspective was on how we could possibly cut the transportation costs.

Septic tanks have a lot of water inside. So, we reasoned, “Why do we have to carry the water?” Every house with a septic tank has a leach field. Therefore, we actually just need to bring the sludge with us. My brother had the idea of cutting the sewage transport

time and cost, and with my engineering skills, I decided to create the technology."

CHALLENGES TO US ROLLOUT OF OMEGA SEWER WATER FILTERING TECHNOLOGY

George emphasizes, “It’s lack of awareness that tends to stand in the way of ready adoption by some people unfamiliar with the technology. For example, a customer’s initial reaction may be that they simply do not want filtration and are firm in wanting a full pump out of their septic tank. In other cases of customers and pumpers alike, there’s a sort of reflex of dismissing something new and saying it can’t work, and some people just hate change, any change.

We’ve found that those who seem firm on sticking with the outmoded method tend to have one thing in common — they’ve never seen or used the more modern equipment and need exposure to the technology and its benefits.”

The quality of the water recirculated back into the tank from the filtration equipment is very high. As new incoming sewage from the home quickly starts mixing in with the filtered water, this creates an internal tank environment full of filtered, bacterially appropriate water, which means achieving zero risk of adverse effects to the tank. When homeowners see how clear and clean the filtered water is that remains in their tank, there’s no more concern about the practical benefits of that. Since there are no equal or greater benefits from draining the tank and hauling the water away, there is no downside to fine-filtering the water and leaving it in place.

Most customers quickly comprehend that the filtered water remaining in their septic tank has been recirculated back into the tank onsite, not brought from another customer’s location. For any who may still insist on a full pump out of their tanks, the pumper

can use the Omega filtration truck to haul it all away for them.

OMEGA BUNDLE OF ADVANCED SEWAGE HANDLING TECHNOLOGIES

Along with the advanced sewage filtration system, the Omega company has brought an array of other new technologies to the North American septic services markets. Their unprecedented service industry essentials include:

Omega Custom Built Vacuum Trucks

Conventional septic and grease trap service vehicles have the traditional tank, blower, and chassis. The Omega vacuum trucks have a two-compartment vacuum tank, chassis, a pulsating filtration system, and an innovative hose reel.

Omega Advanced Septic Service Hose Reel Technology

With the Omega remote-controlled hose reel, operators can just hit the button to run it. As septic tanks are up to 300 feet from the pumper truck, and extension hoses are heavy and time-consuming to connect, this is a big work-saver.

Omega Grease Trap Technology

The OMEGA SG™ Septic and Grease and OMEGA SC™ Sewer Cleaner Filter Series are advanced mechanical filters for separating liquids from solids. They use patented Omega self-cleaning technology to prevent clogging in high-grease applications.

Omega Wastewater Filtering Technology

The Omega wastewater filtration system offers a truly revolutionary sewage water cleansing process that transforms septic tank contents in the range of 170 to 215 gpm (640 to 800 L/min). It is a continuously self-cleaning unit with 100 to 500 microns for absolute filtration.

OMEGA LWS FILTER SYSTEM INTRO VIDEO ON FACEBOOK

The Omega introduction video highlights the company’s collaborations with the University of Massachusetts and the University of North Carolina. The video introduction of the filtration technology demonstrates the process of wastewater recirculation from and back into the septic tank, and how the superior benefits of the system for the overall longterm condition of the tank and grease trap are validated.

OMEGA LIQUID WASTE SOLUTIONS, QUEBEC, CANADA

As Tony Vachon and George Bally point out, the Omega technology "is not really a new kid on the block." Many septic service operators have been using this method in Canada for a long time, and up to 15% of Omega’s sales of the technology are already to US operators. The Omega filtration system and vacuum truck combination is the technology used by VACTOR North America exclusively in their next-gen sewer cleaners. About 5% of Omega’s customers are in Europe and another 2% in Asia. These percentages are across all their products, including the patented filtration system, hose reel innovation, and customized septic tank and grease trap vacuum service trucks. A passion for innovation drives the Omega design

team to continue developing improved equipment and systems for septic and grease trap maintenance operators and their customers to increase service quality and reduce costs. The company's leadership team explains that the growth the company has realized in the US over the past few years has encouraged them to embark on a mission to work more extensively with the pumpers in the United States.

COXREELS BIODIESEL REELS

Biodiesel is one of the most common alternative fuels in use today. Chemically named methyl esters, biodiesel is produced from various sources such as agricultural oils (soy, corn, canola, etc.), recycled cooking oil, and animal fats. Due to the reactive nature of biodiesel, consideration of seals and materials is needed when choosing a hose reel and plumbing.

For biodiesel concentrations of B5 or less, Coxreels recommends the use of our standard fueling

reels (SHF or TSHF).

If the biodiesel concentration is B5 or less, the biodiesel will have such small affect that it will behave exactly as standard diesel where no special considerations are needed. For biodiesel concentrations of B5 or less, Coxreels recommends the use of our standard fueling reels (SHF or TSHF). For concentrations above B5, stainless steel plumbing should be used with Viton seals and non-sparking pawls. For these circumstances, the following Coxreels products are recommended: SHF-N-525-

BBN, TSHF-N-XXX-BBN, or TSHL-N-635-BBN. In concentrations above B20, Viton seals must be used along with a special hose. The Coxreels product most suitable for this application is the TSHF-N-620-BBN with the Flexwing VersaFuel Hose.

Coxreels ® has remained steadfast and focused on manufacturing high quality professional grade hose, cord, and cable reels since 1923. Offering a full product line serving the industry in every channel and application, Coxreels ® takes great pride in designing, building, and supporting all of their products right here in the U.S.A.

THE GEAR BOX

BEYOND THE PERC TEST: MODERN APPROACHES TO ASSESSING SOIL INFILTRATION

SOIL INFILTRATION IS A CRITICAL FACTOR FOR SEPTIC SYSTEMS. IT DETERMINES HOW WELL WASTEWATER CAN FILTER THROUGH THE SOIL, AFFECTING SYSTEM EFFICIENCY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY. FOR DECADES, THE PERCOLATION (PERC) TEST WAS THE STANDARD METHOD FOR ASSESSING SOIL SUITABILITY. WHILE SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE IN ITS TIME, MODERN APPROACHES NOW OFFER BETTER ACCURACY AND INSIGHTS. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THESE NEWER TECHNIQUES.

WHY GO BEYOND THE PERC

TEST?

The perc test was developed over a century ago and measures how quickly water absorbs into the soil through a dug hole. It’s simple, but its simplicity can be a drawback. It doesn’t account for variations in soil structure, seasonal changes or long-term performance. Modern methods give contractors a clearer understanding of infiltration, helping them design and place systems more effectively.

Soil morphology examines the physical characteristics of soil, like texture, color and structure. This method identifies factors like clay content, compaction and organic matter, which can affect infiltration.

ADVANCED SOIL ASSESSMENT METHODS

1. Soil Morphology Analysis

Soil morphology examines the physical characteristics of soil, like texture, color and structure. This method identifies factors like clay content, compaction and organic matter, which can affect infiltration. A trained soil scientist can assess these features to predict how water will move through the soil over time.

This approach provides a deeper understanding than a perc test alone. It can identify compacted layers that

THE GEAR BOX

might limit drainage or pockets of sandy soil that could cause wastewater to travel too quickly, which, in turn, could cause groundwater contamination.

2. Hydraulic Conductivity Testing

Hydraulic conductivity measures how easily the water can flow through the soil under saturated conditions. Tools like a constant head or falling head permeameter are used for these tests. These tools can provide accurate data on the soil’s ability to handle water movement, which allows you to design septic fields with high accuracy.

3. Double-Ring Infiltrometer Test

The double-ring infiltrometer test is a field-based method that provides more reliable results than a simple perc test. This method involves two rings that are driven into the ground, after which water is added to both. The outer ring controls lateral flow, while the inner ring measures how quickly the water soaks in. This test gives a more realistic view of infiltration, considering both soil type and compaction.

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN SOIL TESTING

Modern technology has made soil testing faster and more accurate. Tools like ground-penetrating radar (GPR) can map underground features, revealing buried obstacles or changes in soil composition. Digital sensors and software can monitor infiltration rates in real time, minimizing errors and delivering detailed reports.

Automated tools can measure how soil absorbs water over several hours, providing insights a shortterm perc test can’t give you. These advancements help septic and sewer contractors make quicker, more informed decisions, saving both time and money.

PRACTICAL BENEFITS FOR CONTRACTORS

Switching to modern methods may seem unnecessary at first, but the benefits are clear. More accurate data can prevent expensive mistakes, like installing a system in soil that won’t drain properly. It also helps meet increasingly strict environmental regulations.

Many states are moving toward requiring advanced testing for septic system approval,

making it important for contractors to stay ahead of the curve.

Better soil assessments also lead to longer-lasting septic systems. Poor drainage or overloading can cause premature failure, which leads to expensive repairs or replacements. By investing in thorough soil analysis upfront, contractors can deliver systems that work better and last longer, building trust with clients.

CHALLENGES TO CONSIDER

Modern testing methods are not without challenges — they often require specialized equipment and trained professionals, which can increase your upfront costs. The long-term savings from avoiding system failures or environmental fines

THE GEAR BOX

usually offset these expenses. Something else to keep in mind is client education. Many property owners are familiar with the perc test but may not understand why advanced methods are better. You should be prepared to explain the benefits in clear, simple terms and emphasize how these tests protect their investment and the environment.

THE FUTURE OF SOIL TESTING

As the septic industry evolves, so will the methods for assessing soil infiltration. Technology and soil science advances continue to refine our understanding of how water interacts with the ground. Contractors who adopt these modern approaches now will be in a better position to adapt to future changes.

Whether you’re designing a new system or troubleshooting an existing one, moving beyond the perc test is no longer optional — it’s a smart business decision. By embracing these advanced techniques, you can deliver better results for your clients and protect the environment for future generations.

EDUCATING CUSTOMERS ON THEIR ROLE IN CARE OF SEPTIC SYSTEM PUMPS

TYPES OF PUMPS USED IN SEPTIC SYSTEMS

People usually think in terms of the septic pump for their home. But, there are actually several types of pumps that may be involved in a residential septic system, depending on needs based on the terrain of the property, sewage system usage levels, and other conditions.

Effluent Pump

The effluent pump is the basic type usually installed in residential septic systems. It is a submersible pump designed to send wastewater from the septic tank out to the drainfield, These pumps are often used for septic systems in which fluid and solid waste are already separated. The pump’s function is to push the resulting treated effluent out to the leach field where it is further filtered.

Solids Handling Pump

The use of solids handling pumps (a.k.a. sewage pumps) is common in septic systems. This pump type is designed for moving wastewater containing solid waste matter from the home to the septic tank. This kind of pump is essential where there is insufficient flow from gravity. Most septic systems that require pumping probably need a solids handling pump to maintain the efficient flow of wastewater through

The High Head Effluent Pump (also called a deep water

well pump or turbine pump) is a high-pressure submersible pump.

the system. This pump reduces solid waste with an impeller, which prevents clogging, even with highvolume usage.

High Head Effluent Pump

The High Head Effluent Pump (also called a deep water well pump or turbine pump) is a high-pressure submersible pump. This pump type is used for additional treatment of wastewater through an aerobic treatment system added to the septic system. The high-head effluent pump feeds a spray or drip irrigation system, a mound system, or another pressurized supplementary wastewater treatment system.

Sewage Ejector Pump

The Sewage Ejector Pump (also called simply the sewage pump) is designed with its own tank or

sewage basin that holds wastewater temporarily from the home, until it reaches a set level. The ejector pump is then activated. It drives the sewage uphill toward the septic tank, aerobic system, or main public sewer line until gravity can take over.

Note About Grinder Pumps: Grinder pumps grind and move wastewater out of the home. However, this powerful pump type is for specialized needs based on terrain and is typically not recommended for use with septic tanks. It is designed for locations where gravity flow cannot work because homes are built below the sewage line level, so that sewage must be pulverized for easier pumping uphill into a public sewer line.

MAINTAINING PUMPS IN SEPTIC TANKS

Explain to your customers the critical importance of their role in maintaining the pump(s) in their septic systems. Above all, the septic system owner should take these steps to avoid potentially costly premature pump repairs or replacements:

Regularly check the septic system area. The homeowner should routinely walk around the septic tank and the area of the leach field and look for any signs of leaks or functional issues, such as bad odor, standing water, or other signs of pump problems.

Have routine septic system service.

The septic system owner should be clear on the point that the top priority is to have the septic tank regularly serviced to prevent the buildup of sludge that can clog the pump and damage it or diminish its functionality. Service should include inspection and

cleaning of the pump, including its impeller and filter to clear away any accumulated sediment or debris.

Have routine septic tank pumping.

A residential septic tank should be pumped at least every 3 to 5 years under usual household conditions, according to the EPA, but needs vary by pump usage rate, sewage volume, and tank size. Guide your customers to help them determine the best service schedule for their needs.

Have routine professional septic system inspections.

Homeowners should further have their septic pumps, tanks, other associated plumbing and equipment, and leach field professionally inspected periodically. Additional inspection may be needed for diagnosis if

TACKLE THE TOUGHEST JOBS

a problem arises. Inspection is the best way to ensure against negative effects on the pump from debris and wear and tear.

Be aware of signs of clogs.

The customer should understand that if the sewage system begins showing symptoms of a clogged pump or drain line, such as draining slowly, sewage backing up in drains, bad odor, or odd noises, professional attention is needed.

Key Indicators of Septic Pump Problems

There are many possible signs of problems in a residential septic system. Advise your septic service customers to read this information so they can identify these kinds of indicators of potential issues with their septic tanks:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT A SEPTIC PUMP PROBLEM

There are many potential causes of septic pump problems, such as clogged pipes going to the tank due to debris buildup, worn or damaged seals, pump impeller, float switch, or other component(s), or just excessive water use overloading the pump’s capacity. If your customer suspects a pump or other septic system problem may be developing, he/she should:

1. Schedule a standard septic tank pump out and inspection. Describe any symptoms of a problem you’ve discovered and ask the technician to check the pump for signs of wear.

2. While waiting for the septic service technician, restrict the amount of water going out to the septic system to prevent overloading the pump.

3. If signs of a pump malfunction or other failure of the septic system have already developed causing sink, tub, or toilet drains, etc., to back up into the house, call for urgent help if needed.

4. Have a formal septic system inspection, diagnosis, and professional adjustment, repair, or replacement of the pump and/or other components, as needed.

TEACH YOUR CUSTOMERS HOW TO CARE FOR THEIR SEPTIC SYSTEMS

It’s better for your customers and your brand for you to teach them what to do to preserve the proper functioning of their septic system and extend its useful life. Distribute this article to your customers as a handy guide to their responsibilities in maintaining their septic tanks, pumps, and other system components. Advise your customers to have their septic systems professionally inspected every 1 to 3 years, depending on their level of usage and local environmental factors. Further, encourage your customers to feel free to contact you with questions about their septic system or services. Finally, make sure that every time you visit them for a service call, repair, or inspection, you give each customer your card with contact information again, to ensure that they can always conveniently reach you.
