Foreword

OUR CITY DO NOT NEED A BLUEPRINT IMAGINING JURONG CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT ENVISIONING COMMUNITY AND HOUSING WHERE A CITY NEVER GONE

Our city do not need a blueprint. Our World is going through the rapid economic transformation. Yet we are not progressive in the way we design cities. We claim ourselves as a UNESCO creative city yet our creation is no longer about the good product, it is about self-expression. We are often concerned about the finished product and forget that the unfinished is a stated invitation to the user to complete the experience. We are often keen in the exclusivity of design but the design is about the inclusivity. The sweet attempt to make sense of the resultant design at the early stage kills the relationship between exploration and translation. Are the design of today condemn to the visual feast of observer or participants.Who are we trying to impress? Who are the real community and what are the houses of future looking like? Informed by the first-semester masterplan and its intensification of doubling the current 80,000 [2015] population in Jurong region of Singapore, the sequent architectural proposition this semester was sought to develop programs, functions, and spaces in central business district fit for 21st century. Located in the sandwiched lot between the existing Jurong transport interchange and future Jurong high-speed railway leading to Kuala Lumpur, the central business district will be home to 16,000 occupants on a suspended bridge spanning 800 meters. Knowing the quantum of occupants and participating in Singapore Budget 2017 vision of moving forward together as one Singapore. And, living in a major rapid changing world where technology posed as a potential disruption to most industries, we asked ourselves, ‘Can we create a central business district of today, moving everyone forward with deep capabilities that can thrive in an uncertain and fast-changing world of today?’ While the whole world today is looking for a blueprint to turn this potential disruption economic of today into potential opportunities of tomorrow. We, as a studio acknowledge that we are in a different world today, we do not need a cast-in-stone roadmap. Thus, We wanted to design a new CBD of not looking at a change in strategies but series of strategies for changes. Within this context and parameters setup, and the key to our investigations was an examination of distinct landmarks, existing level changes, roads patterns, transportation vehicles, programs and economies within Jurong CBD. Analyzing this pattern, we begin to explore and discuss images of the future that would provide us to imagine a new city for tomorrow where spaces of learning and knowledge will be an extension of the super school. This extension 'The university of life' where a series of buildings critically explore how learning may constitute in the future and how spaces could be created to frame this process. In the light of the new CBD, a range of technology, appliances, and constructs was imagined and developed that allow occupants to develop deep capabilities fitted for the 21st century. Connecting to our neighboring country through the future high-speed railway, the project echoes an attempt to capitalize our project as a catalyst to go international. Through our design exploration, we also examined underground economies within the city including a state-supported black market, robotics energy plant and goods transport system. These are proposals under the 800-meter span bridge. On the bridge itself, we also looked into elderly housing above the current transport interchange to tap on the existing land cost so the affordability of housing will be significantly brought down. The arena of knowledge, a new aged library

where it houses an underground of 15 meters storages of books, objects, and rare collections and serving as a regional library and archive for the neighboring countries. Rather than a static housing, the insertion of maker's center where craft and arts creatively explored in a co-sharing apartment, inspiring pedestrian while commuting on the bridge. The amphitheater of food explores the relationship between local hawker food and a theater. The ground-breaking creative smell and sights create a direct dialogue with the festival plaza where festivals and impromptu events are hosted. Framed as a speculative and polemic inquiry on spaces for the production of ideas. The idea spot acts as a venture capitalist for ideas and where ideas are spotted. It started to question the act of how ideas are produced and communion between founders and funders. It is a supermarket of ideas. Channel hopping through the site, I set out to interrogate the mechanism an idea and an invention, closing down the slippages and transgression between the actual and the imagined, the here and there, and the now and then, as capital becomes a backdrop, prop and plot device to a series of imagined programs. Finally, the pockets of learning spaces along university of life, a super school was envisioned. The environment takes an education beyond the wall of an institution into the hand of public. Aligning with the idea of growing deep capabilities, it spans across 800 meters from the high-speed railway to the Jurong interchange with a diversity of learning environment. The horizontal school places a strong emphasis on the intersection between these future programs on the bridge and knowledge production to test and explore how new community and housing typology could rewrite the way how city are conceived.

economically climate and vision of university of life

The studio aims to develop a creative, diverse and rigourous approach to architecture and design. We learn to observe, draw, model and design through a series of creative discussions before embarking on an individual building project sited in Jurong CBD. The main intention of the studio asking individual buildings to response to each other is to allow us to explore ways of seeing, interpretating and understanding objects/ events/ places and learn to look beyond the obvious into the unseen qualities of a citymaking. Through these series of design process, we designed a central business district of today, moving everyone forward with deep capabilities that can thrive in an uncertain and fast-changing world of today.

THE RISE OF ROBOTS AND A JOBLESS FUTURE : WILL CONSUMPTION PATTERN CHANGE ??

Image caption: Photography evolution

A Creative Revolution And Sharing Paradigm Do we see the rise of robots and machine production as new opportunity to free us up to do what we do best?

What are community and housing in the future? Why do we still need a community? If we need , Who are these community? What exactly is a house that embrace the future?

SITE : JURONG, SINGAPORE The semester one studio, Jurong masterplan parcellation concentrate on providing a platform where international meet local. And understanding what architecture as a subject between masterplanning and global and regional issue. The site was then divide into eight parcels and lead by distinctive individuals bringing the masterplan to life. Doubling the existing population of Jurong, the masterplan proved its assumption of providing density yet not forsaking the greenery and corroding the ambiance of the site. Thus , the masterplan structurally integrateda sense of diversity and dynamism as one experience the new Jurong.

ALLOCATED SITE : JURONG EAST CBD The corridor between two major transport hub in Jurong, the new high-speed railway and the current Jurong East interchange will be the new CBD. Estimating an arrival of approximate 4000 people from the new high speed rail ,the corridor will definelty have a constant inflow of people into the CBD. And also given the doubling of residential population in Jurong region, the new CBD will be accomdating 16,000 residential. Thus , these built up will definelty buzz a constant life within the CBD even on weekend.

FINDING THE FIT: UNIVERSITY OF LIFE The university of life is a series of buildings, spanning across 800 meters between the high-speed railway and the Jurong east interchange that critically explore how learning may constitute in the future and how spaces could be created to frame this production of knowledge. It is essential that learning spaces offer comfort, recognition, adaptivity and privacy.

NEGOTIATED NARRATIVE Addressing Founders Dilemma and diversing funders investment, Idea spot was developed as a communion between founders and funders. It is a hotspot of ideas and also where ideas are spotted.

15

IDEA SPOT Entitled IDEA SPOT, this entry thesis is about the future of creative class and their connection to the city. Sandwiched between the future high speed railway and the current Jurong transportation interchange, the project asserts that contemporary innovative thrives on urbanism, and that this presents opportunities to redefine our spatial, social and programmatic connections between production, consumption and everyday life.

These collective spaces becomes a communion and conversation of both founders and funders, both present and future. The collective centre is made up of three distinctive programme, a salon, a bank and supermarket. The salon where raw ideas being refined and polished, a bank where ideas become bankable asset to build the better world and a supermarket where founders display their ideas in the open market to call for investors. And beside the bank lies the mega playground for venture captalist, with an unblocked facing the Jurong festival garden, a commercial and retail-mixed garden, adding vibrancy and buzz of the CBD. The mega playground include the tower of envy, housing the lastest and most luxurious car. At the extreme top of the tower, the rich would fly in their private helicopter. Idea spot become the SE. “We wanted to play around with the idea of university spaces that is dynamic and versatile . The location has provided us with the oppurtunity to break down the barriers of standalone CDB programs, without losing the essence of meaningful and elevated learning experience. Thus, the evolution of new CBD does not have a blueprint , but will continually provide the people with deep capabilities fitted for the 21st century.”
