FOREWORD

Reimagine {re-ih-maj-in.} To think or conceive something in a new way Changes happen everywhere. City is changing, our working field is changing and our roles are also changing are also changing. At these time of changes, we critique the current model of shopping experience along Orchard road, Singapore.The shopping street, Singapore like the rest of the world faces a fierce competition from the world of e-commerces and the citizens of conveniences.The what used to be the must-go destination for shopping is starting to lose its shine presently. Reimagine is a response to these changes: changing buying procedure, expectations, waiting time, social situation, knowledgeable society and the search for a unique shopping model. This book document my thesis as a collection of experiences and design ideas over the past three months for our story of Orchard so far. It starts to serve as a stage for future ideas of both hardware and software to build upon. Through this exploration , the project also hope to serve as a departure of several conversations and design thinking about Orchard road , shopping and beyond

The proposal of a ver tical open-air public space is well shaded by the third and the four th floor str ucture above protecting the entire space from the sun and the rain.

The wide ‘Ground’ with its gradual series of steps and platforms connecting the street level to the second floor naturally draws people t o w a l k u p l e i s u r e l y. A s e r i e s of openings in the third and the fourth floor further enhance a continuity of the ver tical space.

The commons was not only an attempt to c r e a t e a n e w a c t i v e o u t d o o r s p a c e i n t o d a y ’s tropical climate. The mall through its curration of retail experience create a community to support the livelihood of the mall, which makes it a success.

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT SUPERKILEN IS A PARK THAT SUPPORTS DIVERSITY. IT IS A WORLD EXHIBITION OF FURNITURE AND EVERYDAY OBJECTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, INCLUDING BENCHES, LAMPPOSTS, TRASH CANS AND PLANTS – REQUISITES THAT EVERY CONTEMPORARY PARK SHOULD INCLUDE AND THAT THE FUTURE VISITORS OF THE PARK HAVE HELPED TO SELECT. THE CONCEPTUAL STARTING POINT IS A DIVISION OF SUPERKILEN INTO THREE ZONES AND COLORS – GREEN, BLACK AND RED. THE DIFFERENT SURFACES AND COLORS ARE INTEGRATED TO FORM NEW, DYNAMIC SURROUNDINGS FOR THE EVERYDAY OBJECTS. 5 FEATURES OF SUPERKILEN GLOBAL URBAN DIVERSITY THAT IN FACT REFLECTS THE TRUE NATURE OF THE LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD – RATHER THAN PERPETUATING A PETRIFIED IMAGE OF HOMOGENOUS DENMARK.

CHANGING LANDSCAPING: THREE COLORS – ONE NEIGHBORHOOD A DIVISION OF SUPERKILEN INTO THREE ZONES AND COLORS – GREEN, BLACK AND RED. THE DIFFERENT SURFACES AND COLORS ARE INTEGRATED TO FORM NEW, DYNAMIC SURROUNDINGS FOR THE EVERYDAY OBJECTS.

CLEAR ZONING- THE RED SQUARE ISDEFINED BY A STREET IN EACH END AND BUILDING AND FENCES ALONG THE SIDES. A BIG RED CARPED STRETCHED OUT BETWEEN ALL SIDES OF THE SQUARE.

TRAFFIC CONNECTIONS TO CREATE BETTER AND MORE TRANSPARENT INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGHOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD, THE CURRENT BIKE PATHS WILL BE REORGANIZED, NEW CONNECTIONS LINKING TO THE SURROUNDING.ALTERNATIVES TO THE BUS PASSAGE INCLUDE SIGNALS, AN EXTENDED MIDDLE LANE OR SPEED BUMPS.

FAMILY ORIENTED ACTIVITIES – ONE NEIGHBORHOOD THE ACTIVITIES OF THE GREEN PARK WITH ITS SOFT HILLS AND SURFACES APPEALS TO CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES. A GREEN LANDSCAPE AND A PLAYGROUND WHERE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN CAN MEET FOR PICNICS, SUNBATHING AND BREAKS IN THE GRASS, BUT ALSO HOCKEY TOURNAMENT S, BADMINTON GAMES AND WORKOUT BETWEEN THE HILLS.

A very localise singapore growers and makers street will rise, the curration of various insertion, activation and change of programme is to spice up the shopping street life with a touch of local flavour.

The name Tanglin is believed to derive from the name of William Napier's house, Tang Leng, which was constructed in 1854. In the 17th century Tanglin comprised plantations, mostly of gambier, nutmeg and pepper. tanglin precinct was also a stellar showcase of local and regional crafts. the Singapore Handicraft Centre was a noble attempt to preserve and promote Singapore's heritage of arts and crafts. It also houses rasa singapura which showcase singapore finest hawkers. the good class bungalow was residences of successful merchant of local brands. This houses were statement piece of the local brands, like tiger balm, crocodile, nippon paint and setron television.

The present tanglin shopping street is rather still and quiet. the current programme is mainly residential and hotels. beside the differnt in architectural language, the present do not seem to be a magnet to attract people to adventure out of the main orchard to visit tanglin. the main draw will be its close proximity to singapore botantics garden

FINAL CRITIC PANEL This project aims to provide an alternative model for shopping street intensification within the Tanglin,Orchard precinct by growing the community to support the life of the shopping street. The street from Tanglin mall to Orchard parade hotel is identified as an important commute link to main Orchard road . Tanglin has always been regarded as the backyard of Orchard road. It’s location with close proximity to Singapore Botantic garden, serves a unique potential unifer to orchard park till the Garden by the bay. The main intention of closing of the roads , beside leaving one lane for service access was to give the space back to the people. The insertion of the tram bring a new alternative to people who do not want to walk. The potential of the insertion of two villages, the growers and the makers was built upon the idea of the historial past and justifies the needs for the context being predominately residential. The villages will help to grow a group of community in the the area . The plug-in of plaza spaces aims to value the area through the weekend festivals, pop-up events, farmer markets and so on. This retail and communal facilities are injected on mainly first storey for easy public access and ground porosity. New landmarks like the Orchard watching tower and the park information centre will helps to increase the visibility of the area , reinforce a urban suprises along the way. Hence, the new tanglin masterplan results in many green plots which not only act as noise and heat buffer, but also encourage stakeholders to spill activities on the new park. Instead of deparating the value of the old tanglin, my proposal aim to capitalise on the existing conditions, and build on top of it. It will eventually growing a community that are comfortable to call home to support the life of the shopping street.
