MEET OUR
COVER MODEL!
How old are you? I’m 4. What's your favorite toy? Um….L.O.L. Dolls.
sugar plums and dancing mice I will admit, I absolutely love the Nutcracker Ballet. There is something magical about watching ballerinas floating in the air among sugar plums and nutcrackers. The music, the tutus, the duel … what isn’t there to love? When I was a little girl, I was lucky enough to be part of a Nutcracker performance with my ballet class in New York. I remember my little costume, extra rehearsals and anxiously waiting for performance night. I was giddy with excitement to be a part of this amazing holiday tradition. When the night came, I was ready to showcase my talents and all my hard work to the crowd as I knew my part of the ballet was crucial to the success of the show.
What's your favorite food? Meatballs and spaghetti. What is your Christmas wish? A pink Wonder Woman costume that has a button on it you push and wings come out.
What do you want to do with your family for Christmas? Eat snacks with them.
When my time came … I was ready. I leapt with excitement and ta-da, I was on stage! And there I was in all my glory, dressed in grey with mouse ears on and a hand painted red nose and whiskers. I was a mouse. I was on stage for 2 minutes and I was a star! Well, at least when it came to mice I was. While my involvement in the ballet would leave some prima ballerinas running for the hillside, it left me with a lifetime love of the Nutcracker. Each time one of my children's classes had a wintertime field trip to see the performance, I would volunteer to chaperone. There is something magical in watching the show through the eyes of a child. They would sit in awe of the dancers, the costumes and the music. Their eyes twinkled. They felt the magic of the season and it was beautiful to witness. As this holiday season gets into full swing, I hope that you are able to pause and witness the twinkle in your children’s eyes and embrace the beauty of the holiday season.

mom's corner | #bossmom
As a mom, you quite literally do it all! Between working and making sure your kiddo gets to school with a matching pair of shoes, it proves to be the toughest job anyone could do. Our Giggle moms have shared with us what makes them a #BossMom.

Slow down. Delegate what you can and set a timeline for the rest. Your kids' sports games won’t wait. That fun story about the cartoon dog in the hat, listen to it. Emails and texts can wait until after bed.
Where do you work and what do you do? Tell us a bit about it. What are some of your goals? I own the Gainesville franchise of Just Between Friends. JBF is a pop-up community marketplace for absolutely everything “Baby & Kid.” We host two events each year catering to local parents and charities. I discovered JBF in 2012 when a friend in a mom group invited me to shop. I was immediately hooked and looked forward to it each season. While my first two were little, it provided me a place to resell their clothes and make extra money for all the new things to spoil them with. In 2017, while literally in labor and delivery having Finn, I made an offer to purchase the franchise. Fast forward four years, we have grown to the largest children’s event in Florida, rank 18th out of 160 franchises and have donated over $210,000 through cash and in-kind donations to our charity partners. My goal with JBF is to provide a safe, clean, welcoming marketplace where every single person feels valued. Whether they come for a great deal on a $600 stroller or they come because they have $40 and need to clothe their child for the entire year. They are a friend, a part of JBF and feel it as soon as they walk through the doors.
What is your favorite part / most rewarding part of being a mom? My favorite part of being a parent is getting to watch their personalities develop. Time seems to go so fast; I feel like it was just last year that I had a newborn and zero clue what to do with her. Now I have these three amazing little people with their own thoughts, ideas and style. Seeing the bond between them as siblings, hearing the older two have “big kid” conversations about things that happened at school, it is so fun to watch!
What is the hardest part of being a mom? The hardest thing for me as a mom is remembering to slow down and be present. Not physically present, but actually stopping to listen when your brain is doing a mental checklist of all the things that you should be doing. Waiting for them to buckle themselves and praising them instead of rushing so we can get from point A to point B, so we can clean up from dinner, make it to sports, get back to work, finish the laundry, answer an email. It’s taking the time to hear a very long recap of a cartoon and actually comprehending, actually caring what color hat the dog was wearing. Taking the
time to appreciate the rock collection that got dumped on the clean kitchen table. I struggle with this daily. Slowing down and appreciating the moments, whether I have time to or not.
What gets you up in the morning? School? Seriously, those tardy letters and the mom walk of shame into the office to sign them in when you’re late stinks!
What makes you laugh? Finn. This child is a mess! He has zero filter, zero worries, he is 100% honest and it is amazing!
What has been the biggest life lesson that you have learned being a parent? I have spent the last week with this question on my mind, not sure how to answer it. Should I throw in a canned answer that is easy to read? Or be honest? Do I admit that as a parent my non-filtered self has found a filter? That being a parent has changed literally everything about me? That I have always been selfish and now being a selfless parent can be debilitating sometimes? Do I admit that being a parent has made me lonely even though I am never alone? Do I mention that as a parent I have

What is your parenting mantra? Make good choices. We used to laugh at Finn when he would come home from preschool and brag about making a green choice, or telling us about someone making a red choice. It stuck. We all say it to each other daily, and it’s really pretty perfect. Make good choices, simple as that.
How do you balance it all? Lots of late nights, caffeine and a super supportive husband.
How do you relate to other #bossmoms? JBF is such a unique business it’s hard to really understand the job unless you have done it. While I only host two events a year, I am working full time year round on the back-end of my franchise. My two best friends also own JBF franchises, they are my go to’s for support and encouragement.

Share a funny parenting story that all moms/parents can relate to.
What is your go-to meal at home that you cook? Can you share the recipe?
Oh gosh, we have so many. I guess my current favorite is a Finn one. Every morning he wakes up and goes outside to pee. Weird enough on its own, but not only does he walk past the bathroom to go outside, he howls like a wolf the entire time. It is hysterical! Thankfully we live in the country.
We grill out more than anything. I am definitely not one that you come to for recipes.
What is some advice you have for other #bossmoms trying to balance it all? My advice would be to slow down. Delegate what you can and set a timeline for the rest. Your kids' sports games won’t wait. That fun story about the cartoon dog in the hat, listen to it. Emails and texts can wait until after bed.
If you could have any superpower to help parent your kids, what would it be? Is there a superpower that does laundry? I pick that one if so!

What do you do for YOU on a weekly basis? I guess this goes back to the balance question. I can’t say I do anything just for me weekly, maybe monthly though. We do have a pretty awesome massage chair that I sit in every night and demand silence for at least 15 minutes!

anxiety for the first time in my life? That my head never turns off ? That I work every night at 2 a.m. just so I can actually hear my thoughts, so I can breathe but not loudly because I may wake a kiddo and my “work day” will end. So I work in silence, in a dark house so that I can continue to be present during the day even when my head is a million miles away. Should I mention that every single day I feel like I have failed someone and I know tomorrow will be the same? Not being present enough, kind enough, not caring enough, yelling too much. Do I write that I don’t know how to adult 97% of the time and that when I do I feel 100% guilty? Or do I submit a social media, pinterest pretty answer? Here is my honest answer, the biggest life lesson I have learned is “sometimes it’s ok to not be ok.”

Can Kids Have Osteoporosis? BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Let’s face it - kids break a lot of bones. Playground time, scooter accidents, sports… these are all common reasons for children’s growing bones to bend and buckle. But what about the child who has recurrent breaks from minor incidents? Low bone density is becoming more common in children, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery. Poor nutrition, less outdoor time (and exposure to vitamin D) and reduced physical activity may be contributing to this upward trend. There are other conditions that can contribute to a child having lower than normal bone density. Conditions such as cerebral palsy, malabsorption conditions, autoimmune diseases (Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, juvenile arthritis, Type 1 diabetes), anorexia and more, as well as certain medications, can also contribute to low bone density.
Medical Terms
There are two different diagnoses for those with lower than normal bone density: osteopenia and osteoporosis. MedicineNet defines osteopenia as a “mild thinning of the bone mass. Osteopenia represents a low bone mass and is not as severe as osteoporosis. Osteopenia results when formation of new bone (osteoid synthesis) is not sufficient to offset normal bone loss (osteoid lysis).” Osteoporosis is a more severe form of bone loss and is defined by the Hospital for Special Surgery as “a metabolic bone disorder in which bone tissue breaks down, causing low bone density. This makes the bone increasingly fragile and prone to fractures.” Both osteopenia and osteoporosis are considered “silent” conditions because sufferers do not display any symptoms or warning signs until they experience painful fractures. While most common in middle age and beyond (and especially post-menopausal women), osteopenia and osteoporosis can affect anyone.
Prevention and Treatment
Low bone density can often be prevented and treated in the same ways. Regular exercise, including weight-bearing exercises as well as flexibility movements like yoga, are important for good bone health. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can help keep bones strong and durable. Medical News Today suggests good dietary sources include dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese, leafy greens like broccoli and kale, fortified cereals and fish with soft bones like canned tuna and salmon. Encourage children, no matter what age, to avoid cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol to help keep bones strong.

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022
When to Seek Medical Advice
If your child is having frequent broken bones or fractures from non-traumatic incidents, ask your pediatrician if further testing is recommended. They will likely order blood work to check their vitamin D levels, thyroid and parathyroid hormones, serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase. They may also order a DEXA (also known as DXA) bone density scan to check the density of your child’s bones. If any of the testing comes back abnormal, they will likely refer you to an endocrinologist, who specializes in metabolic disorders and hormone irregularities, to get to the root of the problem and monitor your child.
!
If you have any concerns about your child and bone breaks, always seek medical attention from your doctor.

Holiday Keepsake: Salt Dough Ornaments
Materials: All-purpose flour Iodized salt Water Polyurethane spray or mod podge String Straw Cookie cutters Acrylic paint Decorative accents Glue
BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Directions:
Spend some time connecting with the kids this season by making these fun ornament keepsakes. Kids of any age can help with this fun project. Make them for your own tree or as gifts for family, friends or teachers!
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Place aluminum foil on a cookie sheet. Mix 2 cups flour and 1 cup salt together in a large bowl. *Recipe and instructions adapted from Thrifty NW Mom.
Add 1/2 cup water to the mixture and blend all ingredients. Then gradually add another 1/2 cup water, mixing as you go. Once all water is incorporated, use your hands to knead the dough until smooth. This could take several minutes. Sprinkle some flour on a piece of parchment paper and place the ball of dough on it. Using a rolling pin, roll until thin and consistent. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place on foil-lined baking sheet. Using a straw, place a small hole in the top of the ornament (to put string through). Bake for approximately 1-1.5 hours at 325 degrees, or until dough is dry. Allow ornaments to cool completely. Decorate ornaments by painting and adding any accessories (such as buttons, pom poms, etc.). Allow to dry completely. Coat ornaments with a sealing product such as polyurethane spray. Allow to dry completely. Using yarn, string or ribbon, tie a string through the top hole. Using a permanent marker, write the year and name on the back of the ornament. Hang on the tree or gift it to a friend. They also make great teacher gifts!

Giving New Life to Your Unwanted Items BY KENDRA MILLER
Start the new year with less clutter in your mental and physical space. When cleaning or decluttering your house, consider donating unwanted or unused items to charity instead of throwing them away. Your donations will help someone in need and it’s better for the environment by reducing landfill space. It’s a win-win! Clothing donation is common for many people when decluttering or cleaning their homes, but did you know you can donate so much more?
Whether the new year has inspired you to get organized and declutter your home, or you’re planning to move and need to downsize, give your unwanted items new life and donate them to someone in need. Ask for a donation receipt so you can include donations in your tax return.
Below is a list of items you may not be aware can be donated to charitable organizations in your community.
FURNITURE
Charitable organizations like Goodwill, The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity ReStore accept furniture donations to sell in their stores to fund their operations and programs. You can also call around to homeless shelters and women’s shelters in your local community and ask if they need any furniture for their locations. Additionally, animal shelters are sometimes in need of armchairs, ottomans, cots and more. Call your local shelter to see if they need your items. Keep in mind, many organizations do not accept mattresses as donations, so it is best to call ahead to confirm.
SHEETS/
TOWELS/ BLANKETS
Bedding material is needed in animal shelters due to accidents, chewing and general use. Most shelters accept new and used bedding but ask your local shelter for specific donation requirements.
CARS/TRUCKS/
BOATS
If you have an old vehicle sitting around that you would like to get rid of, donating to charity is one option to get it off your hands. Larger charities like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity and The Salvation Army offer hotlines and website services to arrange a pickup. Some organizations will give a donated vehicle to someone, use it for operations or sell it at auction. Do a quick search for local organizations that accept car, boat, truck or RV donations.
EYEGLASSES/ CONTACT LENSES
As you outgrow your prescription, you may no longer need your eyeglasses or maybe you would just like an upgrade. Don’t toss your old ones! The Lions Club, WalMart, Sam's Club and Goodwill gladly accept used prescription eyeglasses, nonprescription reading glasses, unopened contact lenses and glasses frames for those in need.
BOOKS If you have a bunch of books sitting in the corner taking up space, you can donate them to your local library or school. Some charities have developed literacy programs around the world and your books could be shipped to help a child or adult learn to read.

Holiday Traditions Around the World BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
While each family has their own special holiday traditions (check out some in the #momhacks section!), many customs are cultural and specific to the region. When planning your next holiday celebration, consider adding some new cultural flair!
Venezuela
The South American city of Caracas, Venezuela celebrates Christmas by going to church on Christmas Eve - on roller skates! According to Momondo.com, Caracas closes down roads to vehicular traffic so people can skate safely to their early morning services before returning home to a Christmas meal of tamales.
38
Mexico (and many other Latin American countries) celebrate Christmas over the course of nine nights, from December 1624 with a tradition called “Las Posadas” (the inn). According to Journey Mexico, each night during this celebration, the crowd goes to different homes looking for lodging, as a reenactment of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay. They are turned away from many homes and finally let in at the home hosting that night’s party.
Jamaica
This Caribbean country celebrates Christmas in a big way! According to WhyChristmas.com, each town has its own Grand Market starting on Christmas Eve and running throughout the night. The Grand Market is a combination of a festival and a market and is a huge community event. During the day, families buy toys, Christmas foods and often new clothes. Evening festivities start around 6:00 p.m. and everyone dresses up in their new or nicest clothes to attend the market. The market goes all night and while some people party all night, some attend a Midnight Mass. The food, vendors and guests make this a celebration not to miss!
GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022
Australia
A tradition dating back to 1938, Carols by Candlelight is a famous Australian Christmas tradition. Christmas falls during the Australian summer so the lyrics to some traditional songs have been changed to remove references to snow and winter. According to Australian Geographic, the event takes place in cities all around the country. The larger cities host events that draw in famous Australian singers such as Kylie Minogue, The Wiggles, John Farnham and more. Events are broadcast on radio and television.
Greece
Greece has a very old tradition intended to keep kallikantzaroi, or bad spirits, away at the holidays. According to WhyChrismas.com, it is believed that bad spirits appear only during a 12-day window (Christmas to Epiphany on January 6th) and this method will keep families safe. They place water in a shallow wooden bowl with a piece of wire across the top and have basil wrapped around a wooden cross suspended over the water. Once a day, someone will dip the basil in water to keep it fresh. Most typically, this is done by the mother of the family. The kallikantzaroi are rumored to enter people’s houses through the chimney and do such things as putting out fires. Greek citizens also keep fires burning throughout the twelve days to keep the spirits away and even burn old shoes for extra protection!

Jamie Ashford Why were you inspired to teach? Teaching runs through my family. My mother taught for nearly 43 years. My brother and sister are both ESE teachers and I am married to a school administrator. I grew up helping my mother in her classroom through the years and found a love for teaching through her leadership, love and passion for education. I grew up witnessing her love for her students and how that extended far outside of the classroom, whether it was taking food or clothing to a student’s home, paying for school expenses so as to not have a child do without, and my favorite has always been the connections she still has today to former students. My grandmother and grandfather were also teachers and taught well into their 70s.
What is your favorite part of the school day?
WHAT GRADE/AGE DO YOU TEACH? 2nd Grade
The school day is filled with such a variety of parts that bring joy. My favorite part of the day is when I am reading with my students and listening to them read.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A TEACHER? 17 years
Do you have a favorite assignment/ project that you typically assign your students?
WHAT SUBJECT DO YOU TEACH? English Language Arts (ELA)
Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond for his students? An administrator who is truly devoted to making her school a better place? Giggle Magazine wants to know! Visit gigglemagazine.com to submit your favorite educator for a chance for him or her to be featured in one of our upcoming issues.

One of my favorite things to assign to my students is writing about their unique qualities. This is always so humbling to see how they, even at such a young age, are able to recognize how special they are and what makes them special. It also allows students to recognize unique qualities among their friends and classmates leading to the ability to love others, have empathy for others, and embrace those that may be different.
How do you wind down from a long day of teaching? Should I answer this honestly or with the “politically correct” answer. LOL. I do find an escape through watching Instagram Reels (no, really) and occasionally making reels to fill the cyber world with humor. However, my true “wind down” is being home with my children, cooking/ baking, and having movie or game board nights with my family.
What do you like to do outside of teaching? I am the proud momma of three children. I find my greatest joy in life is spent with my family. We love trips to the beach, board game nights, movie nights, and my son has recently discovered he likes to cook and bake. So I treasure these

Share a funny teaching moment/day. Well, honestly, I try to make each day as fun as possible while also ensuring my students are learning. One day that stands out is a day when one of my students skipped into class and excitedly shouted, “I can’t wait to see what kind of fun is happening in here today.” Well, it happened to be a “not so fun day” and toward the end of class, he informed me “that was kind of flat ... not what I expected.” This gave me a giggle, and reminded me that nothing goes unnoticed by the children. It also allowed for a great opportunity to teach them that some things in life may not always be “fun,” but if you do them with a positive attitude, there is still good to be had.
What is your favorite book? “The Crayon Box That Talked” - This is my favorite book because I love the way it teaches children about how unique we all are, yet when we come together we make something beautiful. I use this book at the beginning of the year to talk about how beautiful we make our classroom with all of us in it. It is really special to see what the children write about how unique they are. Some talk about their eye color, their size, their speed at running, etc. It’s a special book and a special time in our classroom each year.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? We have faced unprecedented challenges over the last two years in education as we have navigated a pandemic. As teachers, we have had to face these challenges with unprecedented strength, patience and grace. While this recognition has my name on it, I couldn’t let this go without acknowledging the amazing teachers that fill our classrooms throughout this District. We have come to work, in some cases, while also coping with the immense stresses in our world and in our homes and have continuously remained focused, engaged and committed to the task at hand in our classrooms, which is to love our students, protect their hearts, and create a learning environment they can thrive in. Teachers are incredible people and belong in a class of superheroes all their own.

THE HISTORY OF
TOYS Throughout the Ages
BY AMANDA ROLAND AND LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Toys have come a long way. Just as our society advances, so do the toys and games that entertain our children. The Early Years:
In early civilizations, there were two main types of toys that children played with. Some were meant purely for fun, like balls or yo-yos. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “the earliestknown written historical mention of a toy comes from about 500 BC in a Greek reference to yo-yos made from wood, metal or painted terra-cotta.” Another stringed toy, the kite, appeared in China or Indonesia between 400 BC and 1000 BC, according to National Geographic. Not only were kites considered toys, but they would also later serve as military tools and lead to the discovery of aircrafts! On the other hand, some toys were meant to replicate tools, weapons or living things. When children had time to play, which was rare, they would mimic the things they saw their parents doing in everyday life. Different styles of baby dolls and wooden swords have been discovered by historians, and they were most likely made out of sticks, bones, stones and string. Also, many figurines made to look like different animals were discovered.
42
The Indus-toy-al Revolution:
From early civilization to the 18th century, the toy scene changed slightly as civilizations progressed around the world. A cousin of chess was created in India and playing cards were introduced in Asia. But it wasn’t until the early 19th century that toys began to boom - thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution brought great gains to America. A boom in technology allowed for great inventions like the spinning jenny that helped the textile industry. The factory system was created, allowing for more efficient production of goods. And yes, these goods included toys! Toy production became quicker and cheaper, making toys more accessible to more children. Gone were the days of handmade toys. Hello to factory-made BB guns, puzzles and baby dolls! And at the end of the 1800s, we see the first plastic toys being made from something called celluloid.
GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022
Plastic Makes Perfect
Moving into the 1900s, we see many of the toys that we know and love today like Mattel, Inc.’s famous Barbie, model airplanes and the ever popular LEGO® set emerge, all thanks to an interesting compound referred to as plastic. This material was cheap (because it is made from oil), easy to produce and lightweight. Also, the moldability of plastic was perfect for mass production, as thousands of toys could be made from one mold. That is how model airplanes and LEGO® sets gained their popularity in the ‘40s. “With advancement in plastic and synthetic textiles, dolls hit their massmarket stride in 1959 when Mattel's Barbie - an 11-inch incarnation of a 'teenage fashion model’ - made her debut in a swimsuit, and a choice of two hair colors,” according to National Geographic. Barbie was accompanied by Ken in 1961, and then the (slightly more muscular) G.I. Joe came about in 1964. Barbie is still popular and is now available in many ethnicities, careers and sizes! According to Statista, Barbie products sold to the tune of 1.35 billion dollars in 2020!
Tech Toy Uprising:
As we approach the end of the 20th century, we see a huge advancement in technology. The first personal computer was taking shape in 1974 followed by the release of the revolutionary Atari 2600 gaming console in 1977. We witness an early version of the internet in 1983, followed by the introduction of the eight-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (the NES) to the U.S. just two years later! Children (and adults alike) could play games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda comfortably at home, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Nintendo followed the success of their original NES console with the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1990), the Nintendo 64 (1996), Nintendo GameCube (2001), Nintendo Wii (2006) and currently with the versatile Nintendo Switch (2017). In addition to the Atari and Nintendo brands, we see the emergence of other popular gaming systems – from the early success of game designer Sega with their Master System (1986), Sega Genesis (1989), Sega Saturn (1995) and Sega Dreamcast (1999), followed by the more contemporary consoles from Sony named PlayStation (introducted in 1995) and just a few years later, Microsoft introduced their XBOX in 2001.
The Future of Toys:
Toys will continue to evolve with changing times and lifestyles. According to the Toy Association, there are some toy trends we can expect to see on the horizon. Socially Conscious Toys Society is becoming increasingly focused on social responsibility and the toys of the future will too. A focus on eco-friendly toys and packaging, culturally diverse toys, endangered species stuffed animals, STEAM toys that showcase renewable energy sources, farm-to-table themed toys and items that acknowledge frontline workers are expected to hit the shelves. Family Play Many families rediscovered play between parents and children through additional time together during the pandemic. Connecting in this way was meaningful for many families and toymakers will provide new options that are entertaining for multiple generations. Wellness and Mental Health Toys that promote social and emotional learning and interaction within families will be big in helping children process their feelings. Fidget toys and toys that encourage mindfulness and self-care habits will be hot on the market with the increased awareness of the importance of mental health. Feel the Beat Music is popular across all generations and genres. Look for more toys that incorporate creative ways to connect with music, including screen-free audio players, music related to social media platforms and traditional musical toys and instruments. Artificial Intelligence According to CNBC, toys featuring artificial intelligence will continue to grow in the market. While these toys have amazing potential as interactive objects, some families have concerns about the data collected. Research any toys of interest and decide what is right for your family. Every new decade brings the next best toys. Looking forward, we can expect children’s toys to advance as technology advances. Look out for toys that incorporate Virtual Reality, Smart gadgets and lots of electronics. But, let’s not forget about these old reliable toys that helped us get here. Yo-yos, kites and baby dolls can still put a smile on our kiddos’ faces, and that’s all that matters. GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022

Where Every Day is a
HOLIDAY BY KENDRA MILLER
There are a select few towns across America for which the holiday season never really ends, thanks to names that capture the holiday spirit and festivities that celebrate the wonder of Christmas.
Christmas, Florida
Named for Fort Christmas, which was established during the second Seminole War per the town’s website, Christmas, Florida sits east of Orlando and features a large post office with a special mail slot for Santa and streets named after his reindeer. Every December, thousands flock to Christmas so their holiday mail can be emblazoned with the town's special Christmas postmark. Today it serves as a historical park and hosts a free "Cracker Christmas" celebration each year featuring pioneer demonstrations from the Florida Cracker era and a whole lot of slow-cooked barbecue.
North Pole, New York
Home to a Christmas themed family amusement park and village, North Pole, New York is located at the base of Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks. The attraction website highlights all the excitement of a full Christmas experience from Santa’s Workshop and Bakery to the Reindeer Barn. North Pole, New York gives a full Christmas experience during the summer and winter months.
44
Christmas, Michigan
According to Exploring the North, a website for the town, in 1938, Michigan game warden Julius Thurson started a holiday-themed toy factory he called “Christmas” along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s upper peninsula. While the factory was destroyed by a fire only two years later, the community continued to grow, and today all the businesses in Christmas carry the holiday theme yearround. Winter makes this town of Christmas a truly scenic wonderland in addition to being a popular resort area for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers.
North Pole, Alaska
The official history on the town website for North Pole, Alaska claims the town was named after the home of Santa Claus and his workshop in an attempt to attract toy manufacturers after being bought by developers in the 1950s. The plan failed, but the residents of the town embrace the Christmas spirit with candy cane light posts and year-round Christmas decorations.
GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022
Christmas Cove, Maine
A fishing village and a body of water in the town of South Bristol, Maine, Christmas Cove has a population of fewer than 900 yearround residents. According to the state’s travel attraction site, legend has it that Christmas Cove was named by Captain John Smith when he anchored in the protected harbor on Christmas Day during his 1614 voyage. Despite its festive name, the town is actually a yachting destination, and welcomes far more visitors in summer.
Santa Claus, Indiana
According to the town’s official website, Santa Claus, Indiana is home to the only post office with the name of Santa Claus. Every year, thousands of letters are sent to Santa, and the town hires “elves” to respond. There are holiday themed festivities all year round with a special Santa celebration in December. Santa Claus, Indiana is also the location of the childhood home of Abraham Lincoln with a state park, memorial, farms, restaurant and gift shop.

The Nutcracker's
Rise to Fame BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
As we flip the calendar into December, we start seeing nutcrackers as part of traditional holiday decor. We explored the history of both the nutcracker toy as well as the ballet to add some background flair to this delightful tradition. The Nutcracker Ballet
The Nutcracker ballet has become a holiday favorite throughout America. Where did it originate, how did it gain popularity and what is the story about? According to Dance Spirit, the original version of the Nutcracker story was written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffmann, who wrote “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” This was a dark tale about a young girl named Marie who ventured to the Land of Toys to defeat the Mouse King, who had shocking brainwashing powers. According to Ballet Beautiful, French writer Alexandre Dumas adapted the story into a lighter version in 1844 that was called “The Story of a Nutcracker.” It is the story by Dumas that was eventually transformed into the ballet we know and love today. In 1890, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky began to compose the music for the ballet. According to the Moscow Ballet’s History of the Nutcracker, the ballet premiered the week before Christmas in 1892. Unfortunately, Tchaikovsky died in 1893, never knowing how wildly popular his ballet would become. The Nutcracker made its way across the ocean to the United States in 1944, premiering with the San Francisco Ballet. In 1954, George Balanchine, leader of the New York City Ballet, was asked to further edit the Dumas version into what we know today as “The Nutcracker.” It is with Balanchine and the performances of the New York City Ballet that the production became the astounding success it is today.
The Nutcracker Toy
In ancient times, people used rocks to crack open walnuts and other nuts with a thick outer shell. In fact, according to the Nutcracker Museum, archaeologists have identified stones used for cracking open nuts dating back 4,000 to 8,000 years ago in the Archaic Period. Since then, nutcrackers have evolved through several different renditions including metal, iron, wooden, ivory, porcelain, screw and the standing wooden soldier nutcrackers featured in the ballet. While historically nutcrackers have been used for the purpose of cracking open nuts, today the wooden soldier nutcracker is seen primarily as a Christmas decoration.
THE
STORY
According to NutcrackerBallet.net, the story begins on Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum home during an elaborate holiday party. Godfather Drosselmeyer arrives and gives lavish gifts to his godchildren, Clara and Fritz. Fritz receives a drum and Clara receives a nutcracker doll. Fritz becomes jealous of Clara’s gift and breaks the nutcracker. Clara is devastated and falls asleep under the Christmas tree, clutching her beloved doll. As Clara begins to dream, the toys in the room come to life, including her nutcracker doll, who leads an army to face the evil Mouse King. Eventually, the nutcracker doll turns into a Prince and escorts Clara to the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets, where they are welcomed by the famous Sugar Plum Fairy. The ballet concludes after their adventures when Clara awakens from her fanciful dream, still clutching her beloved nutcracker under the Christmas tree.

According to the Nutcracker Museum, the wooden nutcracker we recognize was born in Eastern Germany in the Sonneberg and Erzgebirge regions, bordering the Czech Republic, in the early 1800’s. This area was a mining region and during the winter months, men spent time woodworking and carving items for their family. The Kids Love Nutcrackers site (part of the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum) states that it was believed that having a nutcracker in the window helped ward off evil spirits and protect the family. The first nutcrackers were whittled by working class citizens and decorated in the likeness of kings and soldiers to represent the upper class working for them by cracking open their nuts. According to German website Oktoberfest Haus, Wilhelm Fuchtner, the father of the nutcracker, produced the first commercially available wooden soldier nutcrackers in 1872. According to the Australian Ballet, the toy nutcracker gained popularity in the United States after World War II, when American soldiers brought home nutcrackers purchased from Germany’s famous Christmas Markets while they were stationed overseas. When the Nutcracker ballet became popular in the United States a few years later, the wooden toy soldiers solidified their place in American holiday decor. Want to learn more? Check out the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum in Leavenworth, WA or the Nussknackermuseum in Neuhausen, Germany that are dedicated to nutcrackers and their rich history. There is also the Ironworks Museum in Rouen, France and another museum in Tarent, Italy that feature historical nutcrackers.

2022 EDUCATION GUIDE
Want to know a secret? Teaching preschoolers their colors, shapes, letters, numbers and how to count – that’s the easy part for teachers like us at O2B Kids! The real question is…will they learn how to THINK for themselves? Will they learn how to make smart decisions and form their own opinions? Will they learn to problem solve and manage their emotions? Will they learn how to make friends, actively listen and ask questions? At O2B Kids our INTEGRATED LEARNING SYSTEM prepares your child academically, socially, and emotionally. We are passionate about Early Childhood Education and work together with you, the parent, to ensure that your child’s learning goals are met...all while instilling a love for LEARNING! So how do we do it? We offer kids variety. We expose kids to a wide array of activities. We also talk to kids. We ask meaningful questions and have real conversations. And this begins with children as young as infants too! Research proves that the first five years are key for brain development. Our curriculum is based on learning through play and we know experiences wire the brain. The more experiences the better, especially in young children. We’re building the foundation for a thinking brain…and we’re passionate about it! Founded in Gainesville in 1998, O2B Kids now has twenty-five locations across Florida and Georgia and more on the way in 2022. Understanding the Placenta BY DANIELLE PASTULA
Pregnancy is a beautiful and exciting time in a woman’s life, but it can also be confusing and even scary for first-time expecting moms. We’re guessing you’ve stocked up on all the “What to Expect ...” types of books you can get your hands on, but even if you’re a mom-to-be who has no interest in poring over books, here’s some essential info about the placenta that you’ll be glad to know come your due date.
Women's Health at the Medical Plaza, if your ultrasound still shows placenta previa halfway through your pregnancy or in the third trimester, you’ll be advised pelvic rest and will have to have a C-section. Placenta previa occurs in approximately three to five pregnancies out of 1,000, Roussos-Ross said.
The placenta is a separate organ that develops during pregnancy and attaches to the wall of the uterus. The role of the placenta is to act as a filtration system for your baby. The placenta delivers oxygen and nutrients to your baby, and it also removes waste products from his or her blood. This transfer and removal of nutrients and waste is facilitated through the umbilical cord.
Placenta Accreta Placenta accreta occurs when blood vessels and other parts of the placenta grow into the uterine wall, which results in the placenta remaining attached to the uterus after childbirth.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE PLACENTA?
The placenta doesn’t just gradually disappear after you have your baby. If you deliver your baby vaginally, you’ll also experience what’s called the “third stage of labor.” You’ll have some more mild contractions and need to push to deliver your placenta. If you have a C-section, the placenta will be removed during the procedure. After delivering the placenta, the medical staff will properly dispose of it for you, or, as some women are choosing to do, you can keep some of your placenta for postpartum consumption. This practice is referred to as placentophagy and many holistic health practitioners believe it aids in labor recovery, relieves pain, lowers your chances of postpartum depression, and prevents breastfeeding ailments, among other things.
PLACENTA PROBLEMS Placenta Previa Placenta previa occurs when your placenta is lying lower in the uterus and partially or fully covers your cervix. Placenta previa may be present in your first trimester, however the placenta is likely to move further away from the cervix as your pregnancy advances. According to Dr. Kay Roussos-Ross, the Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as the Medical Director of

GIGGLEMAGAZINE.COM | DECEMBER/JANUARY 2022
According to Roussos-Ross, the main risk factor for placenta accreta is the occurrence of prior C-sections. The risk exponentially increases with each prior C-section, and if present, placenta accreta typically requires a hysterectomy at the time of delivery. Placenta accreta can usually be detected during a routine ultrasound. However if you experience any bleeding, especially in the third trimester, Roussos-Ross advises that you let your doctor know immediately. Placental Abruption Placental abruption refers to the occurrence of the placenta detaching from the uterine wall either partially or fully before delivery. It can either develop rapidly due to force trauma such as a car accident or fall, or develop slowly over the course of the pregnancy, due to factors such as pre-eclampsia or smoking. While rare (roughly 0.3 to 1 percent of pregnancies), placental abruption is a very serious pregnancy complication for both mom and baby as it can deprive the baby of oxygen and cause major blood loss for the mother, Roussos-Ross said. Some symptoms of placental abruption include painful vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal and back pain, and rapid contractions. If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately seek medical attention. It’s a lot of information to take in, but don’t let it scare you. The more you know, the better you can prepare for anything pregnancy throws your way!

Hello, Baby! When Should I Take My Baby Out in Public? BY AMANDA ROLAND
Knowing when to introduce your baby to the world can be tricky, especially for first-time parents. You worry about their immune systems and if they will be able to fight off common germs. You also worry about strangers putting unwashed hands on your baby. These are all valid concerns, but doctors say that ultimately it is up to you to decide when it is time to take your newborn out in public. First, it is important to distinguish between taking your baby outside and taking them “out in public.” If mom and baby are ready to take a walk outside in nice weather, that is encouraged, according to John Hopkins Medicine. Just make sure that your newborn is dressed appropriately for the weather. Also, be sure you (mom) are physically able to be up and walking. If you have questions about your postpartum recovery, contact your doctor. “I recommend that the family go for walks in their neighborhood or parks when they are feeling ready to get out and about,” said Tanya Banks, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Gainesville
Ext ra Precaut ions:
If you are taking your newborn to meet new people, make sure those touching your infant have washed their hands and do not have flu-like symptoms. As a parent, it is your right to deny people the opportunity to touch or get close to your baby. You should not feel pressure to allow strangers to meet your newborn if it does not feel right to you.

Pediatric Associates. “The goal is to keep everyone healthy.” On the flip side, going “out in public” is very different from taking a walk outside. Being in public implies that you will be seeing other people or coming into contact with objects that other families have touched. This includes going to a crowded park, grocery store, the mall, a restaurant and the like. In this case, some doctors encourage parents to wait a few months or at least until the baby is current with their vaccines, according to John Hopkins Medicine. “I do advise parents to avoid public places until after two months of age,” Banks said. “Their immune systems are still developing. If an infant less than two months old develops a fever, which is a temperature [greater than] 100.4, they may be advised by their pediatric provider to proceed to the ED [Emergency Department] for evaluation.” When your baby is ready to go out in public, Banks also suggests wearing your infant in a sling/carrier or covering the infant’s car seat with a lightweight blanket to avoid strangers approaching your infant. If you are taking your new baby to meet close family members and friends, it is important that they are up to date on their vaccines at least two weeks before meeting the baby, especially whooping cough and the flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). COVID-19 can also pose a threat to newborns and their families. It is best to keep your newborn out of contact with anyone who has COVID-19 or symptoms of the virus. Also, the CDC recommends those five years and older get the COVID vaccine to protect those who can’t get vaccinated, like newborns.

The Magic of Bubbles BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
We remember the days of chasing bubbles around the yard without a care in the world. What makes bubbles so magical for kids of all ages? Bubbles are not just fun, they are also an important part of a child’s development. According to Sensory Lifestyle, an online resource to teach parents evidence-based play techniques, bubbles provide a benefit for several different aspects in development. Blowing and chasing bubbles assists with both fine and gross motor skills, oral motor skills, visual tracking, hand eye coordination and a tactile experience. Bubbles also encourage kids to be active while they chase the bubbles that blow away and jump to catch them. When blowing bubbles with a parent or friend, it also encourages communication and dialogue. And we thought they were just fun to pop!
Check out these ideas for making bubbles both fun and educational!
Make your own bubble solution! Try this DIY bubble solution that uses only 3 ingredients you likely already have on hand. Have your child help prepare the solution for fun play. 4 cups warm water 1/2 cup granulated white sugar 1/2 cup dishwashing soap Heat water until warm. Stir in sugar until completely dissolved. Using a fork or whisk, add in the dishwashing soap. If you have patience, allow the solution to sit at room temperature for a few hours. Otherwise, create your own bubble wand out of pipe cleaners (or other objects) and start the bubble party! Enjoy the laughter and squeals of delight.
Prefer to use premade bubbles? Check out the bubble product featured on page 28
1. Count the bubbles. 2. Make bubble wands in different shapes. 3. Create bubble wands out of different household items and get creative! (pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, etc.) 4. Practice body part recognition by popping bubbles with your elbow, your ear, your head! 5. Have kids help create the bubble solution and use math skills to measure. 6. Ask kids to hypothesize how far the bubbles will travel or which bubble will go the furthest. 7. Give instructions such as “pop the largest bubble” or “pop 3 small bubbles.” 8. Observe and describe the colors seen within the bubbles. 9. Test how bubbles respond to blowing softly versus vigorously. Have your child hypothesize first, then test the theory!

How Chores Prepare Children for a Great Future BY TRACY WRIGHT
“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.” Abigail Van Buren, better known as renowned advice columnist Dear Abby, penned those words in one of her legendary columns. Popular Science reports that it is the primary responsibility of parents to make sure their children can survive as independent adults, once they “leave the nest.” It’s not too early to begin instilling regular habits in children that are age and developmentally appropriate. A study in Developmental Psychology found that children close to two years of age have an internal motivation to begin helping with tasks, which can build a lifetime habit of performing chores of increasing responsibilities. A famous Harvard study that tracked children’s habits over many years into adolescence and adulthood found that children who performed chores fared better later in life.
The study found that “chores were the best predictor of which kids were more likely to become happy, healthy, independent adults.” The American Academy of Child and Developmental Psychiatry recommends setting clear boundaries of what is expected of each task and set regular routines. For example, “please clear the trash after dinner,” sets a thorough expectation of the task and when it is to be done. Consistency is key as well as serving as a positive role model for your children. If mom or dad don’t help with household tasks, what example does that show our children? The Academy also advises that parents “focus on small, manageable tasks” for younger children while longer jobs can be made fun. Making it a game or using a song (“clean up, clean up, everybody clean up!”) can help motivate younger children. Setting up a chore chart for each task and a reward system helps track goals and progress. Don’t be frustrated if kids push back. That’s totally normal, says Popular Science. After all, do adults always like to complete chores? Commiserate with your children that chores aren’t always fun, but they are a part of what a family does together. Tasks don’t have to be completed perfectly or just as you would do it. Praise your child for the effort and helping the household. You’re teaching your children more than completing menial tasks. Chores help them feel competent, learn time management and organizational skills, and set a great foundation for years to come.

How to Be a Positive Role Model for Your Children BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Most parents want their children to grow up and be successful, well-adapted adults who thrive in this crazy world. Believe it or not, what you do now impacts and shapes their future. Let’s face it - no parent is perfect. Sometimes we hit the drivethrough, throw out some curse words, overreact to something minor or make careless decisions … us parents are humans too. But, for the most part, we try our best to be a positive example for our children. Being a positive role model not only means modeling desirable behaviors but also accepting responsibility when you make a mistake.
Eat Your Veggies
One way you can positively influence your child’s health and habits is through your daily food choices. Make it a point to include vegetables at every meal, offer fruit as snacks and scale back on fried chicken and tater tots. Teach your child the value of a balanced diet and how our bodies use food as fuel for our playground time, our school learning and everything else we do.
Move Your Body
Hate exercise? You’re not alone. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, up to 60% of American adults don’t get the recommended amount of exercise and over 25% are not active at all. However, being active doesn’t always have to mean hitting the gym. Make it a point to get moving with your family regularly. Bike rides, walks, gardening, bowling, skating, playing a game of basketball in the driveway whatever works for you. The message you send by being active is that you want your child to treat their body with respect and that you expect them not to spend the whole day playing video games.
Conflict Resolution
Many parents worry about their children seeing them have a disagreement with a spouse or family member. However, disagreements are a healthy part of life. We sometimes argue as we consider different viewpoints that help us shape our identity. What’s important is for your child to see how to fight fairly (without excessive name-calling or derogatory comments) and that you are able to eventually resolve the issue with the other person.
Accepting Responsibility
Everyone makes mistakes. Modeling behavior of accepting responsibility when you’ve made a mistake teaches the value of integrity. Trying to hide or cover up a mistake will show your child that lying and avoiding punishment is the desired behavior. Teach them to own up to their mistakes and accept the consequences. You are the primary adult influence in your child’s life, and they are looking to you for guidance on how to handle certain situations. Establishing good habits early in life will make it easier for them to adapt throughout adulthood instead of trying to correct bad habits established in childhood.
Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent. -BOB KEESHAN

Tweens and Good Tidings Unite BY NICOLE IRVING
It’s present time! Ahh… this is the best. As parents, we just love to see the joy and excitement our tots exude when they tear open those pristinely-wrapped gifts. They squeal and shriek over the newest Barbie®, LEGO® set or maybe that special American Girl Doll®. Gift giving for the youngsters was a breeze, that is… until they hit their tweens. In the middle of being your “baby” and your “teen,” these kiddos are in the process of blossoming into their own and changing faster than one can comprehend. So, how do us parents holiday shop for these ever-changing people who one day love their Teddy Bear and the next day vow to never want to see it again? It takes a little creativity and thinking outside the box, but gift giving for your tween can be just as much fun and produce just as many “ohhsss,” “ahhhss,” and shrieks as years past!
Box Subscription These are so in. Check out brands like Googan Squad (fishing), Ipsy (makeup), Fab Fit Fun (fashion) for ideas for a gift that keeps on giving!
Broadway Show Tickets or Concert Tickets Do they have a love for the theater or have a favorite band? Present them with Broadway tickets or tickets to a concert when they have a show nearby! Added gift: Frame a playbill or old ticket stub from eBay of show/band and wrap it up for added gift.
Gift Card Tree with Their Favorite Restaurants or Shopping Places Are they an avid shopper who just doesn’t know what they want? Grab a faux tree from Hobby Lobby and attach gift cards in all different increments to their favorite eateries and stores.
Memberships for Golf Course and Golf Clubs Have a future Tiger Woods or Nelly Korda in the family? Splurge on a family golf club membership and wrap up some balls and tees with a side of clubs for the holidays!
New Sports Equipment and Sports Lessons This is perfect for those kids who have a passion for their sports. Wrap up new sunglasses, gloves, cleats and socks and pair with a month or two of private lessons and training!
Outdoor Experience
Do your kiddos like to fish? Invest in a fishing charter and wrap up new rod, line, bait and polarized glasses for added flair!

Getting Your Teen Involved in Volunteering BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Giving back to the community is a valuable skill to teach kids. Volunteerism is so important that some high schools require a minimum number of hours to graduate. In addition, colleges and scholarship programs consider a student’s volunteer hours in determining whether to award them with a placement.
How Do I Get My Teen Involved?
While some teens may be service oriented, not every student will seek these opportunities without guidance. When looking for an opportunity, consider the time commitment and the regularity. For example, will your teen give a few hours weekly or volunteer full-time throughout the summer? Consider the number of hours your teen wants to accumulate during their high school career and work backwards to determine the best strategy.
What Are the Requirements?
Oak Hall School requires a minimum of 40 service hours as a requirement for graduation. Of those 40 hours, at least 20 must be completed in a non-profit agency. Students can earn up to 20 hours of their volunteer minimum in service to the school community. St. Francis Catholic Academy also has a minimum service hours requirement as part of their Theology curriculum. Alachua County Public Schools do not have a service hours requirement for graduation. However, they encourage volunteerism and have tracking forms available to help students monitor hours. For Florida Bright Futures Scholarships, the Florida Academic Scholarship (FAS) requires a minimum of 100 hours and the Florida Medallion Scholarship (FMS) requires 75 or more service hours.
How Do We Track Hours?
Check with your school to see if they have a specific tracking requirement. If not, keep a running spreadsheet with date, time, hours, agency and work performed. Have an agency supervisor sign off on hours regularly to ensure accuracy.
Help! We Need Ideas!
Consider your teen’s interests. Do they like music, dance or the arts? Are they animal lovers? Do they like to interact with children? Do they like hands-on projects? Would they prefer data entry or another individual task? Do they enjoy the outdoors? A rewarding experience will help teens understand the connection to their community and ways they can help make it a better place. Contact the agency of interest for more details.
