Memories and items from our past are funny things. They make us nostalgic about moments and events we want to relive. For me, it’s my dad’s orange measuring cups. Every time I see my him pull them out, I know he is not only about to cook a meal that could outshine any award-winning chef, but he is, in essence, wrapping us in love and memories in his own special way.
So, thank you Tupperware, for those fantastic orange-hued measuring cups and for all the amazing meals and memories I have enjoyed throughout my years! And thanks Dad, for cooking up a storm and being my forever sous-chef!
This issue was inspired by our very own Tupperware expert and collector Aníbal Rodríguez whose passion for and collection of Tupperware is surely museum-worthy!

“Grab the measuring cups!” my dad excitingly says to me as we begin to dive into making one of his amazing recipes. I know exactly where he has stacked them, each one in their 1970s orange hue, perfectly nestled into the other one with their handles at the ready just waiting to fulfill their role. I swoop them up and gingerly hand them over, as I know something delicious and wonderful is about to be created.
Check out his story, and some amazing Tupperware facts, along with some of his amazing vintage pieces on page 37.
10 WELLNESS360 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022
I remember watching my dad make pancakes when I was little and living in Jupiter, Florida, in the 1990s, measuring flour preciously and using his orange Tupperware measuring cups. Then, I remember him making me cookies as a new college graduate in the early 2000s while I visited him at his home in Connecticut; orange measure cups were still at the ready. And, just this week, here in Gainesville, I sat and watched as he helped me make the very cheesecake you see on the cover, with the same orange measuring cups.
Editor's Note
My entire life could be told by said measuring cups. I’m sure the stories they’d share of love, heartbreak and tears could make a great novel. Oh, the things they have seen!
The tools that we cook with today are techy and shiny. They have buttons and alarms that put some airplanes and firehouses to shame. When Shane and I got married 20 years ago, we registered for all the latest and greatest kitchen wear, but I now know something was missing. My own set of Tupperware measuring cups. (Maybe they would have helped me be a better cook? Just maybe.)
organs receive stimuli, like when you get that first heavenly whiff of coffee in the morning, they translate this information into signals that our nervous system uses to tell our brains what's going on.

HealthHow to Make Sense of Your Senses as You Age
According to the Cleveland Clinic, your nervous system serves as your body’s command center. It “guides almost everything you do, think, say or feel,” and it’s is even important in regulating things you don’t think about, like when you breath, blush and blink. In functioning as “an enormous information highway running throughout your body,” your nervous system sends signals, receives and interprets information, and controls responses. Once the signals are relayed, a eureka moment happens—your brain says, “I smell coffee!” And this happens over and over again with everything we sense. Your nervous system is important, but it is not invincible. Thousands of disorders and conditions can affect your nerves, according to the Cleveland Clinic, with some of the most common causes of nerve damage being disease, stroke, accidental injury, pressure, toxic substances and aging.
Sight. Smell. Taste. Touch. Hearing. These five words play pivotal roles in helping humans navigate the world. They connect us to our environments, allow us to solve problems and make our lives all the better. Simply put, they help us taste coffee, smell coffee, hear and watch coffee being brewed, and feel the warmth of the mug in your heads. Our senses act as our very own “spidey senses,” if you will, and we are forever indebted to them—especially as it relates to that coffee example.
• WHAT TO EXPECT As you get older, your pupils shrink, which makes it harder to see when light is dim. Your eyes also lose elasticity, which makes it harder to focus, leaving many adults to use reading glasses starting in their 40s. Glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration can also pave the way for loss of vision in people over age 50.
Most of us know about which organs support which sense, like how we see with our eyes and hear with our ears. However, and this will come as no surprise, our bodies are Whencomplex.oursensory
According to an article published by Oklahoma State University, “the normal aging process causes gradual losses to the sensory system” with the changes beginning around the age of 50 years old. Whether you experience a decline in your sensory abilities, or know someone who does, it can feel frustrating and confusing. Often times, it’s not as simple as putting on glasses or a hearing device. However, in understanding how our aging process affects our sensory systems, we can accommodate, adapt and accept losses that may not be entirely overcome; here’s how, according to Rush University Medical Center: Sight

WHAT TO DO Encourage people to speak louder without shouting to avoid any further straining in day-to-day conversations. Try to control background noises, like TV or radio volumes, and wear earplugs to protect yourself from loud noises if you cannot.

•
WHAT TO DO If you’re prone to allergies, limit contact to things that cause them to flair up. Certain medicines can also affect your smell, so be sure to mention any medications you take while at the doctors’ office.
WHAT TO EXPECT The reduced circulation to nerve endings often leads to a decline of touch as you age, which may make it harder to feel or perceive things. Diabetes can cause nerve damages that can worsen this.

WHAT TO EXPECT Taste buds shrink in quantity and size as you age, thus leaving you with a declined sense of taste. It can also fade as a result of infections, like colds, and some medications.
WHAT TO EXPECT Long-term exposure to loud noises and normal decline of nerve cells lead many adults to have trouble hearing. By age 60, one in three adults experience this!

WHAT TO EXPECT Nerves that help you smell begin to deteriorate, and your noses produces less mucus. This means odors don’t remain in your nose long enough to be detected by nerve endings. Common colds and allergies can also cause a decline in your ability to smell.

WHAT TO DO Enrich the flavor of your food with herbs and spices, rather than salt or sugar, to avoid spikes in blood pressure and caloric intake.
WHAT TO DO Conduct daily check-ins to see if your skin was unknowingly injured, and be mindful of how sensitive you are to different stimuli, like being unable to tell how hot or cold something is. If you have diabetes, strive to keep your blood sugar in its target range to reduce the risk of nerve damage.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a food aversion is defined as “a strong dislike for a particular food. The sight, smell or taste of the food causes you to feel nauseous or makes you gag.” A food aversion is a more serious form of a food dislike. Whereas some people may be able to still eat that sandwich that once had pickles on the bun, those with strong aversions could feel sick with just the remnant of odor or flavor.
Most people have a few foods that they don’t like. Ahem, no onions please! But for some, the dislike is severe and, in some cases, debilitating.
What is food aversion?

Ewww! I’m Not Eating That: Food Aversions Explained
According to Healthline, a taste aversion is associating a food with a bad experience. For example, eating a certain food and vomiting afterward could create a negative association between a food and the Foodreaction.aversion in pregnant women is also common due to a rise in the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone during the first trimester. The surge of hormones can affect women’s food cravings and aversions, making them also responsible for morning sickness, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The nausea and vomiting that commonly occur during early pregnancy can also create associations with certain foods, making them less appealing—or downright repulsive—to expectant mothers. These aversions can be so extreme that they are classified as an eating disorder: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Penn Medicine Princeton Health defines ARFID as restricting or avoiding foods to the point where the individual is unable to meet the nutritional needs of the body. Unlike some other eating disorders, this avoidance is not related to negative body image issues. ARFID often cooccurs with other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, sensory processing disorders or past trauma related to food, such as severe Sensory issues could relate to a food’s texture, smell, look or feel inside the mouth.
Children and pregnant women are the most likely to experience food aversions. Many children are labeled as “picky eaters” because they refuse to eat certain foods. Food aversions can be attributed to sensory issues or taste aversion. Sensory issues could relate to a food’s texture, smell, look or feel inside the mouth. This is particularly common in children who are still exploring the world through their senses, so they often outgrow these sensory aversions.
Tales from the Trench Gainesville resident Melissa Beery is all too familiar with food aversions. Since childhood, she’s experienced the inability to eat certain foods. Beery describes her aversion as primarily textural issues. She characterizes the foods she won’t eat as “anything that turns creamy; foods that, if you stir them, they sound gloppy.” She also avoids foods that coat the inside of the mouth. This aversion eliminates a lot of foods from her daily diet. Healthy choices like bananas, avocados, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter and scallops are avoided at all costs. Other common foods that turn her stomach are cheese, cake frosting, dressings, many desserts, macaroni ‘n’ cheese and more. As a triathlete, athletic nutrition can be tricky. Many of the common recovery foods, such as bananas and peanut butter, are off the table. Despite her food aversions, Beery is in good health with no nutritional deficiencies. Over the years, she has learned to make substitutions for the foods she won’t eat or find a different, more tolerable, way to prepare them. With a background in nutrition, Beery has found ways to compensate for her avoidances to maintain a well-rounded diet. Instead of soft foods, she opts for those with a crunch. While peanut butter is off-limits, she found a way to incorporate the hearthealthy protein of peanuts by eating them in a different form. She’s even incorporated them into her perfect post-race nutrition snack: peanuts and dried apricots.
Penn Medicine Princeton Health takes another approach in first focusing on weight stabilization while providing psychoeducation for patients and their families. Depending on the individual’s comorbid conditions, they have found success with medication such as antianxiety, antidepressants, or neuroleptics to soothe anxiety and stimulate appetite.

*If you or someone you love has foods that turn the stomach, consider whether it is impacting the quality of life or quality of nutrition. If the answer is yes, seeking professional help from a mental health professional or speaking to your doctor may help diagnose, understand and treat the condition.
The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) also states that children with ADHD or intellectual disabilities are more likely to develop ARFID. It can be a serious condition that can result in medical and psychological manifestations, including malnutrition and weight loss, according to NEDA.
Fortunately, treatment is available and can account for individual situations and comorbidities. Rogers Behavioral Health explains that they use cognitive behavioral therapy with a focus on exposure and response prevention. This method creates a list of anxiety-producing situations and works with the individual to learn coping skills to reduce anxiety and regain confidence.
16 WELLNESS360 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 Health choking or excess vomiting.
Amid her different strategies, time and patience, above all, have allowed her to adapt—and even embrace—her unique eating style.
Over the years, Beery has adapted to her unique diet. She chooses to prepare most of her food at home, and her friends and family know about her specific diet. She admits that ordering at restaurants can be a challenge, especially the nocheese request. Sometimes, she tells servers that she is allergic to cheese to ensure her order is correct. Social situations with new contacts can also be tricky. Many people are enthusiastic to share a homemade dish, and the preservation of feelings can be a tough landscape to navigate. Ensuring she doesn’t go hungry is another consideration for unknown social settings, which she tries to combat with eating before the event to have a pleasurable experience.

But what, exactly, is overeating? How do you know you’re doing it before it’s over? The answers vary for everyone, but it often starts with learning the signs of overeating, how to break the habit and what it means in the long run for your body.
If you’ve ever experienced overeating yourself, you probably can confirm that the phrase “your eyes are bigger than your stomach” holds true. According to Arrindell, the following are likely signs you have overeaten or are on the verge: You’ve begun eating out of boredom or to distract yourself. You experience intense physical symptoms such as nausea, bloating, flatulence and more. You notice you’ve eaten beyond the point of being full. We’ve all been there before. Whether it be during a stressful moment, or enjoying one of your favorite desserts or snacks, overeating is something we’ve all experienced at one point or another. While mostly a normal and occasional occurrence, overeating can have adverse effects on your stomach and digestive system.
101: Get To Know the Signs Symptoms&
Kylie Arrindell, a dietician at Houston Methodist Hospital, describes overeating as "eating beyond what's needed to fuel your body.” In layman's terms, overeating is the act of consuming more food during a meal than is suitable, given the amount of energy expended through physical activity or excretion. Boredom, stress and other more serious underlying conditions can cause someone to overeat.

Overeating
What are the signs I’ve overeaten?
BY ALEJANDRA ZAMORA
What is overeating?
How do I know it means more? If adjusting your eating habits seems overwhelming or impossible, it could be a sign that your overeating is an underlying symptom of a larger factor, like compulsive
If you find yourself experiencing one or more of these signs, you’ve already taken the first step to putting a stop to eating too much: recognition. Recognizing behavior patterns is an important step to breaking a habit; the next is understanding. What happens when you overeat?
In both the short and long term, overeating can have adverse effects on our bodies if continuous. In an article published by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, multiple things can happen to your metabolism, stomach and even organs. Here’s what Erman Levy, a research dietician at MD Anderson, outlined on the subject:
Overeating causes the stomach to expand beyond its normal size to adjust to the large amount of food. The expanded stomach pushes against other organs, making you uncomfortable. This discomfort can take the form of feeling tired, sluggish or drowsy.
Your metabolism may speed up as it tries to burn off those extra calories. You may experience a temporary feeling of being hot, sweaty or even dizzy. What can I do to prevent overeating?
Luckily, most instances of overeating entail simple lifestyle adjustments to break the habit. The first step you should take is changing the pace of your eating. Just by putting your fork down and drinking water between bites can be a game-changer—Levy advises that this mindful eating habit will help you slow down and discover when you’re full. of time can help to do this more efficiently, too.
Eating too much food requires your organs to work harder. They secrete extra hormones and enzymes to break the food down. To break down food, the stomach produces hydrochloric acid. If you overeat, this acid may back up into the esophagus resulting in heartburn. Consuming too much food that is high in fat, like pizza and cheeseburgers, may make you more susceptible to heartburn. Your stomach may also produce gas, leaving you with an uncomfortable full feeling.

There are many potential causes for weak glutes, but one of the most common in our modern society is a sedentary lifestyle. Even if you exercise daily, a sedentary desk job can wreak havoc on the body. According to Healthline, besides being sedentary, other causes for weak or tight glutes include poor posture, poor form during exercise, improper warm-ups or cool-downs, and muscle stress from running or jumping.
3 | Jump Squats
BY LINDSEY JOHNSON, MS, MCHES, CF-L1
Squatting is a motion we use in everyday life, so building squat strength and power will help with daily activities and sweat sessions. After placing weight in the heels, squat down to where your hips go below your knees. In keeping a straight posture and your head up, drive through the heels and jump. Land your jump back into a deep squat, and repeat the exercise. Complete 3-5 sets of 15 jump squats twice per week.
Before you cringe at the idea of burpees, consider the benefit of sculpting strong glutes while training your body to get up and down from the floor with ease.
A study published in Gerentology found a link between leg power and positive aging, indicating that greater lower-body strength offers a protective effect in cognitive aging in older adults. Not only can strong glutes help prevent falls, but they can also help prevent cognitive decline!
The gluteus maximus, medius and minimus are the three primary muscles that make up the buttock region. The glutes are centrally located between the body’s back, hamstrings and knees. Since all of our musculature, bone structure and tissue are connected, a deficiency in one area may cause pain or dysfunction in another. If you have knee or back pain, the culprit could actually be weak glute muscles. What Causes Weak Glutes?

Oh. Now, I don’t usually mind cold stuff, but I typically prefer it to come in the form of ice cream or a blast of AC after sweating like a waterfall after a 7-minute walk to my UF office.
I reasoned that I could handle the cold plunge at Gainesville Health & Fitness, and with the event, I’d be moving to help combat the cold. (My wife gently asked if I still wore water booties in the cold plunge. The toes can’t take it!)
For years, we’ve talked about signing up for some kind of physical challenge, but we just never found the right one. We wanted it to be a destination event, we wanted it to be something that didn’t feel too easy or too impossible, we wanted it to be a unique experience that would keep us more focused on training and less focused on pudding.
See, I went through a period of about four or five years where I signed up for events that I knew would test my burrito-fueled body’s limits. I struggled through (yet still completed) a marathon, two muddy obstacle course races, and an Ironman. After that, my desire to push really hard leveled off, and I haven’t done anything that felt epic to me in almost a decade.

It’s still early, and I don’t know if my friend and I will make the commitment to go for it, but for the first time in a long time, I feel excited to tackle something that’s hard, that’s semiscary, and that challenges me to go to places—physically and mentally—where I’ve never been before.
Yet, this sounded doable. Uncomfortable, yes. But manageable?

I’m a decent-yet-slow swimmer, so the distance sounded doable, and it sounded like a fun event to do in the summer of 2023. But there was a catch. The water temperature could be anywhere from 52 to 62 degrees, he said. No wetsuits.
I immediately got excited, and my friend and I talked about recruiting our sons to be on the relay as a fun father-son experience. When I told my family about it, they all thought it was a cool idea—until they heard the water temperature.
So when my buddy told me he thought he found the one, I listened.

According to Britannica, onions can be found around the world in most regions, except the tropics, New Zealand and Australia. They join garlic, scallions and other veggies as members of the Allium family, and they are characterized by “pungent linear leaves and flowers with six petals.”
All superstitions aside, onions, which are about 90% water, are jampacked with vitamins and minerals, which makes them a no-brainer veggie to add to any meal. Onions are abundant with vitamins C, B9 and B6, as well as potassium, and they have been linked to reduce the risk of cancer and improve bone health.
Onions are organized by the region they grow in. The College of Agriculture at Oregon State University breaks down their categories as such: short-day, medium/intermediate-day and long-day. In onion types corresponding with their respective geographical locations, researchers at OSU find “short-day onions grow best in southern latitudes, medium-day onions grow best in central latitudes and longday onions grow best in northern latitudes.”
Regardless of their category, though, onions are a staple ingredient in soups, sauces, chilis, salads and seemingly infinite other dishes. Their versatility even applies to their use! Did you know onions have a rich history of fighting evil? And, no, it wasn’t just by creating bad breath or blinding people with tears. According to Clean Eating, “In ancient times, these vegetables were thought to connect the human world to malevolent demons in the underworld. But instead of avoiding them, people harnessed their powers. They hung them [onions] above their doors to ward away evil and consumed them to avoid illness.”
Next time you find yourself in the kitchen, go ahead and slice up some onions for your burger, dice them for your salad, grill them with your kebabs or, if you’re feeling adventurous, peel and eat one like an apple. No matter how you prefer them, onions are a perfectly healthy addition to any meal. So, peel away!

The study concludes that “the Western diet has been a significant contributor to the growing rate of obesity over the last several decades. We all have foods we love yet don’t benefit us in any way. Do we need to cut them out completely, or is it safe to consume them from time to time? Where are the nutrients? Maybe you are a soda addict, candy fiend or love an all-American hot dog at a football game. These foods, along with many others, do not contain significant amounts of important vitamins and minerals. Instead, they boast excess amounts of sodium, sugar and fat.
According to recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 30.7% of American adults are classified as overweight, 42.4% are obese and 9.2% are severely obese. These findings parallel a study published in the National Library of Medicine, which states that “the typical Western (American) diet is low in fruits and vegetables, and high in fat and sodium. Singapore has created meat in labs in an effort to reduce the impact of large-scale farming. This meat is cultured from cells taken from live animals. Restaurants have started serving chicken, and companies, such as Shiok Meats, plan to go commercial by 2023 with lab-grown crustaceans such as shrimp, crab and lobster, according to Saveur.
Food labels are nothing new. Many people scour the ingredients and nutrient list of a product before deciding whether or not to purchase it. Saveur reports that a pilot test conducted in the U.K. disclosed the environmental impact of the product using color-coded eco-friendly labels. This form of labeling will likely be used throughout Europe in the coming months. Look for this to make its way to the U.S. so American consumers can weigh both the nutritional and environmental impact of the foods they choose.
Food Label Packaging
Do you love meat but want to be environmentally conscious?
Food Waste According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 30% to 40% of the food supply in America is wasted. With this comes costs for irrigation, farming, processing and packaging, as well as wasting food that could be used to feed people with limited access. Spoilage is a big factor on the individual level, so a focus on not overbuying will help cut down on personal waste. Another way to decrease waste is to eat leftovers or use leftover ingredients in a new dish.
Another gardening trend blooming in cities like London and Paris are subterranean gardens. According to Saveur, a platform that shares international food trends, some cities are making use of limited space by creating gardens underneath parking lots and other spaces.
While acknowledging the environmental impact on labels may still be in the works, certain restaurants such as Chipotle, are developing transparency with customers about the environmental impact of their menu items. Restaurants with many plant-based items often have a smaller environmental footprint.
Get Growing
Many recent documentaries have inspired awareness about the food supply chain, and concerns of current farming and agricultural practices that have a detrimental impact on the environment. As a result, there are new alternatives in development, as well as a focused effort on existing ideas that individual consumers can do to minimize their footprint.
Creating a personal garden is a great way to reduce costs and create a sustainable method of eating. Whether you grow vegetables, herbs or anything else, you will have the satisfaction of knowing where your food came from and will be positively contributing to the environment.
Plant Based Foods and Lab-Grown Meat Plant-based foods are not only good for our health, but they’re also good for the environment. According to research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, by shifting to a plant-based diet, there would be a 10% decrease in mortality and 70% decrease in greenhouse gas production by 2050.
Eating for the Environment
Vertical gardens are a trending in sustainable farming, with food growing upward instead of outward. This form of gardening works well for apartment dwellers or those who don’t have a large area for gardening. Companies like Lettuce Grow allow consumers to purchase materials online with simple instructions.

If you have ever ventured into your parents (or grandparents) pantry, chances are you have stumbled across a piece of Tupperware. Made famous by its patented burp, Tupperware parties and countless uses, these bowls, measuring cups and containers have become as common place in kitchens across the globe as salt and pepper. Today, Tupperware parties are still going strong and vintage Tupperware pieces are alive and well as collectibles. For our food issue, we took a deeper look into what makes these pieces of colorful kitchen wear so appealing, talked to both a collector and a consultant, and even dabbled into cooking with a Tupperware recipe and vintage cake mold.

Tupperware was invented in 1938 by Earl Tupper and the first product line, the Wonder Bowl, was released in 1946.
In order to make Tupperware more inclusive, they began printing the volume of the containers in Braille on the bottom of the pieces in the 1990’s.

Tupperware was not always sold at home parties, but originally sold in department stores and catalog sales. According to Mental Floss, “The key to perfect food preservation lies in the Tupperware “burp,” the process of closing the lid and reopening a small portion to let out any remaining air. Earl Tupper’s idea for lid burping came from the practice of closing paint cans with the intention of creating an airtight seal.”

Why do you collect tupperware? When did you start collecting? The simple answer is pure nostalgia. I grew up surrounded by Tupperware. We were made very aware of what pieces were original pieces and which weren’t - the Tupperware ones were sacred! They never left the house and we weren’t I didn’t start officially collecting Tupperware until my wife and I got together. We love thrift shopping and she discovered early on my low-key fascination with them. She has been extremely supportive, helping me find many of the pieces. What was your first piece? During a trip to Orlando, our family did the Tupperware tour. I left with a little souvenir container. That was officially the first piece I owned. Later when I went to college, my mom gave me a few pieces to get me started. Some of those I still own today. What is your favorite piece? My avocado green pick-a-deli pickle keeper. That thing is pure gold! How many pieces do you think you have? I’ve never dared to count. I’m pretty sure I passed the 200 mark a while back. Do you have a Must have piece that you are on the hunt for? I’d love to add the salt & pepper shaker toothpick holder someday to the collection. Such a classic Tupperware mid century design! Where do you find your vintage pieces? Actually, there are many places. My wife and I prefer to find them “in the wild” going around thrift stores, yard sales and flea markets. What is your ultimate goal of collecting? Pass down? Sell? Keep collecting? I’ve grown with the notion passed down from my mom that Tupperware is forever. I plan on keeping them. My wife and I store some but we actually use quite a bit of them everyday. The hunt for new pieces never ends. Where do you keep them in the house? We have some everyday use ones we keep in the house. The rest we keep stored in big Rubbermaid containers. I know, I know – Sacrilegious! Do you buy new pieces to add to your collection? Rarely. We are open to it if a piece really fits our wants or needs, but I prefer vintage ones. What is the oldest piece you have? My preference is to grab ‘70s or ‘80s pieces but I do have a few earlier ones from the 60s with the light transparent colors. I love them all!

Blood and coffee stains are notoriously difficult to remove, and they should always be flushed or sponged with cold water before being thrown into a load of laundry. For dried stains, pretreat or soak them with warm water and then treat with a product containing enzymes like a stain removal spray, Bennett said. For products that can't be washed, such as carpet, dab cold water and, then, spottreat with white vinegar.
Home design specialist Jessica Bennett of Better Homes and Gardens recommends not rubbing stains. Instead, she encourages people to blot them, so as to not push the stain deeper into fabric. With this, be sure to always ensure the stain is removed before putting it in the dryer, as the hot air can help set the stain instead of removing it.

If you want to be immersed in all that this book has to offer, I highly recommend not only buying it for the recipes, but I encourage you to listen to the book as read by Tucci himself. I promise, you won’t be disappointed (though, perhaps, you might feel a little hungry).
Stanley Tucci, best known for his acting roles in blockbusters like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Captain America,” knows his food. Born in Peekskill, New York, Tucci grew up surrounded by Italian cooking, thanks to his beloved parents who also helped him make the move to Florence at the ripe age of 13 years old. Most recently, his new show “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” has enabled viewers to tag along with Tucci as he invites us into his world of Italian cuisine and embarks on an iconic tour of the country’s most delicious regions.

Grilling involves using direct heat to cook an item, while barbecuing can be generally classified as using direct heat or indirect heat, like smoking.

3. If you have a smoker, set the temperature to 250 F. Then, smoke until 165 F internal. Wrap the pork in foil until it reaches an internal temperature of 205 F.

Mastering any item in the BBQ world is never really a thing. However, there are a few things that could make your pulled pork more consistent:
SnellShannonbyprovidedPhoto
1. Find a pork butt or pork shoulder from your local market.
What is the general rule of thumb for temperature and time when barbecuing? Is slower always better? This has been debated throughout time, but I always believe slower is better. It may take a little bit longer, but the window for your barbecue to be at the perfect temperature will be open a little longer.
• A thermometer is the single most important tool when barbecuing to know if your food is safe enough to eat.
• Spatulas and tongs are great to have around to flip and move food on your grill so you don’t burn your hand.
I love the Kansas-City-based barbecue sauces, which are high in sugar. They taste great, and sweeter BBQ sauces pair well with chicken, pork and beef. Do you have any recommendations on how to eat ribs with less mess?
BBQ is all about the sauce. What is your favorite kind to cook with?
Try them Memphis style! Memphis is known for using less BBQ sauce and more seasoning. What are your secrets to successful barbecuing? Try to be consistent. No protein that you’re barbecuing will turn out the same every single time. Take notes on what was successful for you, and how you can replicate that same taste the next time. Besides the grill, what are the best tools to have with you when barbecuing?
PictureMattersThis: 12 Ways to Develop a ‘Photographic Memory’
Although these practices aren’t guaranteed to honor you as the next Einstein, nor make my memory equivalent to my sister’s, they can help enrich our memory and support our cognitive health. Given how desperate I am to no longer use a GPS while on UF’s campus or reference recipes for meals I make multiple times a month, I’m excited to give these tips a try—or at least try to remember to do so!

As it turns out, Heidi’s photographic memory isn’t a superpower that she acquired in a lab I once thought her to be born in. This is because, according to scientific research, there is no proof that confirms photographic memory actually exists. Instead, Heidi is born with the inherent ability to recall past events in detail and recall visuals for extended periods of time. She is incredibly smart, thorough and thoughtful. Even though this isn’t classified under the forever-misused term of “photographic memory,” it’s still pretty neat, not to mention invaluable as she navigates through her college Fortunatelycourses.for Heidi, I no longer impose my big-sister jealousy on her photographic-esque ways. She can go about her merry memory way, and people like myself who weren’t born with such a gift can still pursue paths to have an improved memory of our own. The spaghetti my mom cooked? It dates back to 1st century BC in Ancient Rome. The average life span of our chocolate lab who begs to join our dinner? She'll grow to be 10-12 years old. The school we both attend? The University of Florida was founded in 1853 and has operated in its current Gainesville location since 1906. Growing up, I was filled to my adolescent brim with jealousy over her ability to remember things. I didn’t think it was fair that my baby sister knew more than I did, and I often found myself stuffing my face in her history and fiction books to learn about her seemingly mystical ways.

Regardless of what we’re eating or what we’re talking about, she is quick to drop some knowledge that enriches every conversation.
Do you know anyone with a photographic memory? The kind of person who not only knows everything, but they can recall every detail about everything? The kind of people you sit in both awe and envy of? For me, I don’t have to look much farther than across my kitchen table. There, my younger sister, Heidi, sits ready for dinner and ready to tell our family about, well, everything.

Go During the Week
Although these are seemingly simple ways to save, saving money here and there can ultimately have a positive impact on your total bill. This is especially helpful for people who may feel tired of being told to start their own garden or switch to a plant-based diet to combat inflation. With these three tips, we hope that you’re able to find a bigger bang for your buck during your next trip. Happy shopping!
56 WELLNESS360 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022
The shelves are empty, the lines are long and the trip is, well, a headache. Research from Ibotta, an app that promotes cash-back deals with retailers, shows that they weekend is the priciest time to purchase food. Fortunately, there are five other days to shop and save.
And now for an obvious yet seriously downplayed life hack: couponing! Whether you’re a certified-saver or a clippings novice, conduct your own research on the internet to see where you can save money for your next grocery haul. Coupon Sherpa or PromoCodeWatch can help you find brand-specific coupons online, or you can always begin with the trusted “food coupons” search on Google. Be sure to make the most of your findings by crafting an organized system that works for you and your coupons, like filing them by expiration date or kind of food.
While we all love our name-branded this and beautifully designed that, purchasing goods with generic or store brands is a simple way to save big. This is especially relevant when purchasing canned goods, cleaning supplies, pasta and other staples. Truth be told, they’re often just as good as name brands, and they’re made even better by being less expensive. According to research by CNET, Americans can save 40% on their grocery bills by swapping out items, especially brand-name goods over $5.
From wanting to eat healthier to keep our bodies moving, to packing more meals to keep our work days going, we may find ourselves lingering down grocery aisles more than usual. These trips have become more costly due to inflation, leaving many people to worry about not only what to make for dinner but to stress about how they will pay for it.
Are you now more worried about purchasing food at the grocery store than you are about the gas it takes to get there?
To switch up your shopping habits and optimize your next grocery shop during this difficult time, here’s our three go-to steps to guide us through inflation and into savings at the grocery store. Go Generic
BY HANNAH SHELTON
According to the research, you could pay 4% less if you buy wine on Tuesdays, and 2% less on bread and 1% on beer if you buy these goods on Wednesdays. Snack lovers should go to the store on Thursdays, as shoppers can save about 1% on their sweet and salty treats, and they can save around 1% by buying produce and ice cream on Fridays. Although these are seemingly small percentages, consider how they can make a big impact the next time you find yourself trudging through the aisle on a weekend.
Shopper’sSmart
In an effort to combat increasing prices, many Americans have opted to decrease their spending habits. While this is easily considered an economic drag, it has simultaneously inspired an increase in creativity among American shoppers.
Most folks find themselves, along with everyone else they know, hitting up their local grocery store on the weekends.
The Go-to Grocery Guide
According to a survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Alpha foods, about 90% of Americans are concerned about food prices, leaving more consumers to consider groceries a greater concern than gas.
Finance
Go Online
According to Abbey Lunney, managing director at The Harris Poll, “initially, concern was highest around gas prices, followed by groceries and other forms of discretionary spending…but in the last couple of weeks, groceries have become the No. 1 concern for Americans.”

Revamp table setting with a new set of dishware Again, depending on your taste and how many settings you need, you can end up spending a fortune on new dishware. Then, hang calendars and notes on the side of the it, and remove the calendar notes to put them as reminders in your phone! This will freshen up the kitchen in a flash!
Depending on your budget, style preference, and the number of pulls and handles you have in your kitchen, swapping out handles can be pricey. However, you can pick some key drawers or cabinets to embellish, or do the change in gradual stages. Since then, I have been on an APA pool team consistently for the last 18 years except for 2 sessions during my first year of law school. At what point did it go from just playing pool for fun to competing? When I moved back to Gainesville in 2005, I joined a local team and started playing in $5 tournaments at Dugout Billiard & Sports Bar in Creekside Plaza. I was able to learn a lot by both playing and watching the players that were better than me, which was nearly all of them at that point.
and had other debilitating health issues. The pool league really is a family that comes together for everyone’s successes and struggles.
How many tournaments have you played in? Any tournaments you have your eyes on competing in? I have played in hundreds of tournaments. Most recently, I played in the Builders Association of North Central Florida random draw doubles tournament, and my partner and I won! I have won nine tournaments for Las 2011:Vegas:Jackand Jill Doubles 2011: 8-Ball Singles 2011: Co-Ed 8-Ball Team 2011: Ladies Team 2016: 9-Ball Singles 2016: Co-Ed 8-Ball Team 2020: Ladies Team 2021: Co-Ed 8-Ball Team 2022: Masters Team APA pays for airfare to Las Vegas and hotel rooms for the winning players.
I considered these tournaments "$5 mini-lessons," and they helped me increase in skill level. The handicaps in pool are opposite in pool; the higher your handicap, the better player you are. 8-ball handicaps range from 2 to 7 and 9-ball handicaps range from 1 to 9. I was a 3/3 when I first started and now, I am a 7/6. I have been a 7 in 8-ball since 2016 and I am the only female player ranked a 7 in 8-ball in the Gainesville league. What do you like most about playing pool? The camaraderie of my teams and meeting new people I would have never met without our common interest in pool. My best friend is on both of my teams, and I met my current boyfriend, Stu Fox, through league 15 years ago. We all travel together on cruises, rent cabins in Tennessee, and enjoy the nightlife in Las Vegas, but we also are there for each other through the hard times. We have been through the loss of family members, ending of relationships and typical everyday stressors. We celebrate work accomplishments, family achievements, weddings and births. I have married two couples who I introduced to each other through league, and we have held charity tournaments that have helped raise money for fellow league players who have lost a family member, been diagnosed with cancer
I was one of only two women in Las Vegas who qualified in the skill level 6 through 9 bracket for 9-Ball Singles in 2016. The other woman found me in the tournament room to congratulate both of us on making it there, which I thought was really neat for a random stranger to do. Team tournaments are held at the end of each session and the championship tournament is held in May of each year. That tournament is the one that qualifies the team for Las Vegas. I have also participated in several individual and doubles tournaments for Las Vegas, as well as the US Amateur Championship (USAM). The USAM is more for a trophy and prestige, and it features the best amateur players from around the country. I have two important individual tournaments coming up in the next few months: September 17-18 is the US Amateur Preliminary Qualifier in Jacksonville for a chance to qualify for the national tournament held in Palm Harbor every year, and October 2 is the 9-Ball Singles
How did you get involved in playing pool?

It rained all day during a family vacation to Atlanta when I was about 10 years old, and there was a pool table at the Embassy Suites. My dad taught my brother and I how to play that day. We begged for a pool table of our own and got one for Christmas that year. In 2004, I joined my first American Poolplayers Association (APA), the largest amateur pool league in the world while attending Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. With the support of her family, lifelong friends and mentors at work, Allison “Derek” Folds, an associate attorney at Folds Walker, LLC, has taken a game she learned as a way to pass the time during a rainy day all the way to the championship level. Today, Derek balances her passions of pool, law, friends and creativity to find her balance and happiness. Derek shares what it takes to be at the top of her game!

I have known the managing partner, Scott Walker, since I was born, and his mentorship has also been invaluable. They are so supportive of my love for the game of pool and my desire to travel for tournaments. I have also been involved in the Amaze Inn Race, which is a lega-themed local scavenger hunt downtown each year. I develop and judge the “pool challenge” at local pool halls. What is your favorite motivational quote? “Fairy tales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten.”

What advice would you give others who may want to play pool competitively? Only do it if you are having fun! It’s great to be competitive, and it’s only natural to be disappointed if you lose, but you must take those losses in stride and learn from them. Pool is a game in which you can constantly improve your game by bettering your stroke, thinking more defensively and learning new ways of making a ball to get shape (“position”) on the next ball when playing offensively. I try to pay attention to each and every opponent and think “what would I do next?” so I can either replicate that player’s successful choices or avoid that player’s mistakes in my next match. How do you live a balanced and happy life? I play pool for fun even though I’m competitive. It is a way for me to not think about my caseload for a few hours and just relax with my friends while playing a game that I love. There are definitely times when I am not available for league or a tournament because of mediation or an upcoming trial, but I know the next week I’ll be able to fall right back into it because pool league is Myyear-round.boyfriend and I just moved in together, and we love to cook, watch movies and hang out with our fur babies, Sammy and Violet. They are slowly but surely becoming besties with the help of Stu’s youngest, Donovan! I also enjoy making chalkboard art as a hobby. I love designing pieces for my friends and as sponsorship signs for local pool tournaments. I have been an associate attorney at Folds Walker, LLC for seven years. My dad, Allison Folds, is the senior partner,
What have you learned from your competitions and training? I have learned that 75% of the game of pool is mental focus. You can have perfect mechanics, a smooth stroke and vast knowledge of the game, but none of that matters if you can’t stay mentally focused in your match. I have seen some of the strongest players I know fall apart under pressure and some of the weaker players rise to the occasion when it counts. Having a positive attitude goes a long way and increases your chance of success at the table. When I get down on a ball, I try to remember to replace my previous negative thoughts of “don’t miss!” with positive thoughts like “you’ve got this, stay down and stroke through the ball.”
