This Fall is an exciting time for Gilbert Parks and Recreation. While the weather cools down the construction of Gilbert Regional Park, Desert Sky Park and Elliot District Park heat up. The addition of these 3 parks will provide new amenities and opportunities for additional programming, trails, field rentals and community events. The department is appreciative of the communities support with assisting in the designs by attending open houses and design workshops over the past few years. As these projects transition into construction the countdown begins for when we can all celebrate and utilize these amazing parks. The first phase of Gilbert Regional Park opens in September of 2019 and will include an iconic playground, large splashpad, sports courts and ramadas with additional features such as the great lawn opening in 2020. Desert Sky Park will also be opening in 2019 and will include multi-use fields, playground and a lake. The addition of Elliot District Park in February of 2019 will increase the field rental availability in the community by 8 baseball/softball fields and an indoor soccer field while also increasing visitors to the Gilbert community by hosting state and national tournaments. Stay up to date with the progress of these projects by following our social media outlets Facebook and Instagram @GilbertParksRec. The Gilbert Parks and Recreation Foundation is hosting the second annual “LAKESIDE LUAU” on October 20, 2018 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM. This event raised over $15,000 last year to fund the Gilbert Parks and Recreation’s Gilbert Assistance Program (GAP). GAP provides scholarships to connect our residents with recreation opportunities. It will be an exciting family event and all proceeds go to enhance parks and recreation in Gilbert! Did you know that you can become a “Friends of the Foundation” member and receive numerous benefits such as early program registration? Check out all the exciting opportunities to support Gilbert Parks and Recreation at www.mygprf.org From all of us here at Gilbert Parks & Recreation, thank you for supporting our parks and programs making Gilbert Parks & Recreation best in class!

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN CERTIFICATION COURSE
The CGC program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate form the American Kennel Club. The 10-step CGC test is a non-competitive test for all dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds. It is a prerequisite for many therapy dog groups and some homeowner’s insurance companies encourage CGC testing. There are also an increasing number of apartments and condos that require resident dogs to pass the CGC test. Many dog owners discover that Canine Good Citizen training has many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality of life. We will meet each week for 4 weeks and the certification test will be given on the 4th week. This class is intended for dogs that already have a good obedience/manners foundation.
