Monetizing Multimedia Content Sharing: Using IMS for Mobile Web 2.0 Telecommunications service providers are constantly looking for innovative services that can offer them a point of differentiation in a highly competitive market—helping them to attract and retain customers whilst maximizing revenues and profitability. As illustrated by the success of Web 2.0, online collaboration and sharing is gaining more and more success, both for personal use as well as for corporate applications. Users are increasingly distributing and sharing content, in some cases in a fully open fashion, but more frequently among specific groups or communities. However in the mobile world collaborative applications and document sharing are just emerging. Mobile phone users are increasingly using their devices to take pictures and videos; however sharing this content is still not easy.

Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS)—although developed to address these needs—are relatively difficult to use and suffer from limited user adoption. On the other hand, emerging mobile Instant Messaging (IM) solutions are building on the proven success of computer-based versions to offer a mobile service to a wide number of users. The service combines the easeof-use of SMS with the notion of group and community exchanges. Capturing Innovation As part of this innovative approach, and leveraging their joint strengths in research and technology, Capgemini and Alcatel-Lucent have jointly developed a Multimedia Content Sharing Service.
