Monetizing Multimedia Content Sharing: Using IMS for Mobile Web 2.0 Telecommunications service providers are constantly looking for innovative services that can offer them a point of differentiation in a highly competitive market—helping them to attract and retain customers whilst maximizing revenues and profitability. As illustrated by the success of Web 2.0, online collaboration and sharing is gaining more and more success, both for personal use as well as for corporate applications. Users are increasingly distributing and sharing content, in some cases in a fully open fashion, but more frequently among specific groups or communities. However in the mobile world collaborative applications and document sharing are just emerging. Mobile phone users are increasingly using their devices to take pictures and videos; however sharing this content is still not easy.

Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS)—although developed to address these needs—are relatively difficult to use and suffer from limited user adoption. On the other hand, emerging mobile Instant Messaging (IM) solutions are building on the proven success of computer-based versions to offer a mobile service to a wide number of users. The service combines the easeof-use of SMS with the notion of group and community exchanges. Capturing Innovation As part of this innovative approach, and leveraging their joint strengths in research and technology, Capgemini and Alcatel-Lucent have jointly developed a Multimedia Content Sharing Service.

Our Multimedia Content Sharing Service offers users a real-time, easyto-use interface through which multimedia content can be exchanged amongst communities. In just one click it enables users to share content created with their mobile phone—be it pictures, videos, or music—with their contacts.

“pushed” to the community—all through one-touch access.

Various communication services can be launched from the Multimedia Contact List, including Instant Messaging. This dynamic contact list permits full and flexible management of user groups, authorization rules and access rights. Hence, changes to Buddies lists on the client are seamlessly reflected in terms of access to shared content.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5350 XML Document Management Server (XDMS) is the foundational architecture behind the Multimedia Contact List Solution. The XDMS service is the access point for all traffic generated in the contact list and its role is to make user data easily accessible to service enablers. It provides standard format and interfaces to store and manipulate this information.

The Multimedia Contact List enables users to define various communities with specific sharing rules. Each time a new picture is taken, it then becomes possible to automatically and immediately have all authorised contacts notified to download and display it.

The Multimedia Contact List Our solution has an open architecture based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The use of IMS standards ensures both durability and interoperability.

In an environment with various access and device types, the XDMS manages a host of tasks: I Storing of contact lists and data in a document repository I Providing the functionality to add, edit, and delete contacts from the contact list I Storing profile information I Providing the mechanism to notify clients of any changes to the stored data

For the community receiving the central shared content, the client automatically displays notifications of availability each time new content is shared. This “keep-in-touch” mechanism provides the end-user with a flexible way of staying informed and the ability to view new multimedia content as soon as it 2

On the client side, Alcatel-Lucent has a customizable mobile client implementing XDM. This client is compliant with various access technologies (e.g. ADSL, GPRS, UMTS and CDMA), and is specifically designed to offer an intuitive user experience. It supports a wide range of terminals (PC, feature phones, Smart-Phones and PDAs) and enables a fully integrated interface with

various services (e.g. voice calls, video and picture sharing, instant messaging) all accessible from the Dynamic Address Book. Integrating the Solution The Multimedia Content Sharing Service is just one of the many innovative solutions that are continuously developed in Capgemini’s Accelerated Delivery Centres (ADC). The ADC approach brings flexibility and speed to help develop the service portfolio of major telecom providers by helping to rapidly design and launch new solutions or proof-ofconcepts. We constantly evolve our suite of pre-qualified end-to-end solutions that combine components from our network of innovation partners, development and integration tools, and reusable IT interface libraries. Thanks to a specific team specializing in IMS Solutions, Capgemini can manage the full deployment and integration of the Multimedia Content Sharing Service in a telco environment to ensure the service is launched quickly. The integrated solution copes with all business and technology requirements, and connects to other IT components—including IMS as well as non-IMS systems. Capgemini manages all of your integration needs and ensures interoperability with existing service platforms to guarantee a seamless transition to the new solution. In particular Capgemini can support with the integration of: I Content Management Systems to store and publish shared content I Service Management, Self-care portals and CRM I Billing and Business Support Systems I Security and Authentication, Authorization and Accounting Systems

Additionally, Capgemini can ensure smooth integration and/or interoperability with legacy systems, especially with Instant Messaging systems and communication gateways. Capgemini also provides all of the necessary support and training to help operators quickly master the system and ensure a smooth roll-out, therefore enabling faster time-tomarket. Reaping the Benefits For service providers, the benefits of this approach are numerous. Capgemini and Alcatel-Lucent’s Multimedia Content Sharing Service helps capture and retain users through the creation of communities. The availability of a user-friendly interface also favours the exchange of multimedia content for those users that are currently challenged by the complexity of MMS. The solution helps service providers obtain larger audiences and therefore increases network traffic. In a corporate environment the solution can be used as a foundation for collaborative work—enabling employees to selectively and efficiently share documents internally or even with selected external communities, such as partners, suppliers or clients. Examples of potential corporate applications include: I Security and identification: sharing photos I Medical Diagnosis: sharing medical documents/images I Field Engineering: sharing work documents over mobile devices I Travel Agencies and Tourism: as an added-value service for customers
