Gold of Lapland

Gilt-edged experiences up north “One late winter day in 1928 a caravan of 8 horses and wagons rolled off towards Boliden in northern Västerbotten. A boy stands and watches the caravan with a certain sense of excitement. He is also witnessing the beginning of a new era…” This is the opening of Åke Lundgren’s book Guldfeber (Gold Fever) about Guldriket (Gold Country) and describes the day the foundation for the tourist destination of Gold of Lapland was laid. What was once a sparsely populated region was, over the years, pocketed by flourishing communities, lured by the promise of gold. Västerbotten was described as the new Klondike. But fortunes changed, the mines closed and people moved on leaving behind a treasure trove of cultural and industrial heritage sites which are now popular tourist attractions. These destinations, and the personal stories which accompany provide fascinating days out and a lifetime’s worth of memories. Think about riding the ropeway, which was built to move ore by 1,300 workers during the coldest winter in memory. Visit Adak to hear how Östen Dahlberg’s dreams of building a proper cinema in the middle of the forest came true and how it survived untouched for decades. Life as a miner can be pretty dramatic and filled with explosive events, but just think of the shock when, in 1946, a three metre image of Christ appeared overnight on the wall of the Kristineberg mine. Was this seeming miracle part of a local prophecy predicting that Christ would show himself three times? And will the image, now faded, reappear again? Visit the Underground Church at the mine where you can find out more about the story and stand close to where the original image appeared on that fateful dusty morning. Gold of Lapland does not only have a rich industrial heritage, it has a wealth of attractions, which reflect all aspects of its past and present, to suit all tastes. Gammplatsen, in Lycksele, draws on its Sami roots and proud timber tradition with a forestry museum, while author Torgny Lindgren’s

home village of Raggsjöliden and surrounding area is a literary tour beacon. Bastuträsk is more than just a train station, it has many historic buildings to visit and offers guided tours which explore its cultural heritage. In the little village of Svansele, meanwhile, a unique exhibition features stuffed wild animals portrayed in scenes from their natural environment. Here, too it is possible to visit a sheep farmer as well as buy local vegetables and delicacies such as soured carrots. Or why not tuck in to a wilderness buffet prepared over an open fire? In Skråmträsk pop in to shoe-making workshop to see how it crafts footwear and then head for the restored mill which houses Västerbotten’s first organically-certified café. Following the River Vindelälven from the mountains to the coast will also take you on a voyage of discovery - locally produced food, rapids and rope bridges in Mårdsele, a husky farm in Ekorrsele and trekking and riding Icelandic horses in Ammarnäs. Wherever you go you’ll be assured of a good night’s sleep - accommodation comes in many shapes and sizes, from exclusive hotels to cabins and tree houses! Laggträsket – a hunting and fishing paradise

Nostalgic fairytale now with new technology

At Lake Laggträsk hire a cabin and boat for a perfect experience of the wilderness. Listen to the silence, revel in the tranquility; fish, hunt small game, pick berries or just relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Locked, forgotten and abandoned for over 25 years. That was fate of the Sagabiografen cinema in the village of Adak, until a group of enthusiasts lovingly restored it to its original 1940s state.

A wood-fired sauna and a real fire-heated log cabin are available while wind shelters are distributed around the lake. For water, simply collect it from a nearby spring. Laggträsket also has a mineral trail, paths for walking and a horse paddock next to the cabins. Those wanting to get out on the lake can book a guided raft trip, either for fishing or to just drift off and enjoy the ride. All in all, there’s everything you need to experience what life is really like in the northern wilderness.

Take a trip back in time by visiting this charming cinema, was once at the heart of the 1940s mining community, and hear its fascinating tale. Next door the Elvira Museum has an exhibition about the mine and a fantastic collection of minerals. A café is open during the summer while July is the month for the popular film festival. During the winter the cinema organises film showings at the Forumlokalen, in central Malå.

Laggträsket Open all year round. Fishing is not permitted after the ice thaws until June 3, 2016. The winter season starts in Nov-Dec, depending on ice conditions. Info/reservations: +46(0)70-323 01 56 or +46(0)70- 323 99 05, info@laggtrasket.se, www.laggtrasket.se

Arvidsjaur

Hats and toys: Awakening old memories When the Klockljung family moved from Stockholm to their new home in the village of Glommersträsk a fantastic discovery awaited. They found no fewer than 350 ladies’ hats, dating from the 1930s-1960s, all in pristine condition and all waiting to be unpacked and put on display! The house’s former owner, milliner Jenny Petrine Stenquist, had over the years carefully wrapped every unsold hat in tissue paper and stored them in boxes up in the attic, where they remained until the Klockljung family found them. This treasure trove proved the starting point for a hat museum which now has more than 150 hats on display. To complement the collection the museum also has a fascinating series of historical ladies’ hairdressing items, such as 1940s hairpins, hair nets, rollers, electric curling irons and perm setting equipment. Also popular is the toy collection, which started with the Klockljung family’s own toys from the 1950s but now contains items spanning the 1930s to the present day, including: Märklin train sets, dolls, teddy bears, Lego pieces and board games. An experience that’s above the ordinary Discover the landscape of northern Sweden from above by taking a 13.6 km ride suspended from the world’s longest ropeway. Originally used transport iron ore from the Kristineberg mine to the processing plant at Boliden, the ropeway gives you a window seat overlooking a vast cultural and industrial heritage.

Stay at Bäckerudden If you love to hear birdsong, enjoy a spell of fishing, to take a swim or just relish the beautiful view, why not hire one of our cabins? We have five located close to Lake Mensträsksjön at the frame head and at the start/end of the ropeway. All have bunkbeds and are available from May 1 - October 31.

Running between the villages of Örträsk and Mensträsk, the ropeway offers a unique opportunity to take in the beautiful landscape and, maybe, catch sight of reindeer or other wild animals. You could also combine your trip with a visit to Bäckerudden, the old frame head facility which has been converted into a restaurant and cabin accommodation, while a delicious and traditional northern wok meal is served in a large Sami tent nearby. Once a busy industrial site, this former hotbed of activity is now infused with a nostalgic calm that provides visitors with a very different experience. One which is, literally, above the ordinary.

kellefteå Municipality is as big as some of southern Sweden’s biggest regions - so we have a lot of space in our beautiful countryside! We enjoy our outdoor life and offer a wide range of activities and facilities. The variation is enormous and, consequently, there is almost no limit to how you can spend your time. Pack your picnic basket and head out. There is a lot of water in Skellefteå. With over 1,000 lakes and rivers, plus a long coastline, the fishing is second to none. You can try your luck for more than 30 different species of fish. In central Skellefteå, just 100 ms from the shops, you will find the perfect spot to cast for salmon or trout.

Robertsfors

Robertsfors

– WELL WORTH A VISIT

Come to Robertsfors for experience-rich summer days filled with discovery and exploration. With a full-to-bursting events diary, you’ll be needing to check the calendar every day!

W

ith a thriving theatre, music and exhibitions scene, it’s not hard to see why Robertsfors is known as the “municipality of culture”. The summer months are filled with musical happenings such as the Hamnkaféerna in Sikeå, while fans of antique fairs and flea markets come flocking for the must-visit Andra Varvet in Sikeå and Ånäset’s Stenfors Gård. Visitors will enjoy the large number of heritage sights that provide the opportunity to learn how the municipality’s development has been shaped by war, sea, commerce and industry. The Bruksmuseum houses a collection charting the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution from 1750 to 1950. From here you can take a short trip on the restored, narrow-gauge railway and view a model showing the original route from Robertsfors to Sikeå harbour. The importance of trade to the region during the 1800s can be emphasised by a visit to the old village shop at Dalkarlså manor which has been fitted out in the style of the start of the 19th century as are a series of accompanying rooms. A peek in the bought and sold ledger provides a fascinating window on how people lived more than 100 years ago. Take a further trip back in time when you visit Thurdinska Gården in Bobacken where the home of an 1820s sea captain has been recreated. To find out more about this and other historical visitor attractions, please visit our website. Being lucky enough to have a long, beautiful coastline means that, sun, sand, bathing, boating and fishing are all important to the people of Robertfors. We also have a number of excellent fishing and bathing lakes and the River Rickleån is a welcome sight as it winds its way through the municipality. Along its banks are two popular walkers routes; the Logging Trail and the Fishing Trail, both of which end in the Klubben Nature Reserve on the coast. Why not take an overnight break while following one of these trails with a stay at Överklintens Kvarnhotell, beside a section of river rapids. It’s probably worth bringing a fishing rod too, so you

can try your luck along the way. High quality handicrafts are available from Ekorrbo Hantverk, Krukmakeri & Textilverkstad, Lavvo och Hantverk in Ratan. The special handicraft event featuring competitions and late night opening is always a summer highlight. This year’s the date is July 2, from 18-24.00. It’s always a good year for the roses in Åkullsjön’s Rosa Aurora Borealis rose garden which has more than 100 varieties on display. These beautiful blooms are not always associated with our northern climate so there’s always something interesting to see at this garden which specialising in roses that can cope with the cooler temperatures. For those who like to investigate the region’s wild flora then we highly recommend a walk along the Natur- och Kulturstigen Trail in Sikeå Hamnmis. At 2 km in length it offers a fascinating introduction to coastal plants as well as the cultural heritage of the harbour. Did you know Robertsfors municipality is a part of Ostriket - Cheese Country? This is the home of Västerbottensost cheese, the emperor of cheeses and where restaurants and cafés are proud to present “VB-cheese” on their menus. For the big cheese of cheeses you need a big cheese slicer - so it’s no surprise that Ånäset can also boast about having the world’s largest cheese slicer, made by Ekorrbo Hantverk. And get a real slice of the Västerbottensost action at Lufta Camping which serves delicious pizza featuring the cheese. Last but not least, green is for go on August 20/2. Two days of food and fun with a focus on organic local produce, machine exhibits, children’s activities and animals are in store at the Green Expo trade fair, a must-visit event for anyone with an interest in: food, farming, forestry, animals, machines, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Familyadventure

– ADVENTURES AND FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY

D

aily life is one mad rush. Chores, work, school, homework and all those other evening activities. Think how nice it would be to get rid of the “must dos” and just enjoy the “love to dos” as a family. Stay away from home in good accommodation, eat well and just be with each other. Well now you can do just that - we offer you and your family a wonderful holiday in Gold of Lapland. Lycksele – the “City in Lapland” – is a mecca for families who can have three times the fun thanks to its zoo, swimming park and museum. At Lycksele Djurpark stroll around the leafy zoo and get close to all the Nordic animal residents. You’ll find all the amenities you need for the perfect day here: a park, café and a restaurant - if you don’t bring your own picnic lunch of course. At the Lyckolandet fun park there’s plenty of climbing, jumping and running opportunities for small people while bigger people can get an adrenaline boost on rides such as the jet boat jumping Nauticjet. For those longing for a swim then Ansia Badpark is the perfect family choice with its wa-

ter slides, wave machine, children’s pool, play area and beach volleyball court. And when everyone’s worked up an appetite, there is a café on hand serving simple food, ice cream and other refreshments. Gammplatsen is the site where Lycksele was first established in the 17th century and is a popular destination point for tourists of all ages, eager to visit the Forestry Museum, Sami settlement and scenic surroundings. Try your hand at baking in the old bakery, don costumes from a bygone age to become a Sami, lumberjack or trader. You can also test your driving skills in a forestry machine. And adventures of all kinds just keep on coming. How about travelling along a 13.6 km long ropeway, the longest in the world? All ages can experience the excitement of “flying” above the treetops like a bird while learning something about the area’s industrial heritage at the same time. Maybe you’ll see a moose or a reindeer…. It is also possible to descend 90 m down a working mine to visit an underground church. Find out why it’s there it’s a fascinating story involving an old local prophecy.

For another great family day out - visit the village of Svansele in Norsjö which has a fantastic exhibition depicting stuffed animals in their natural environment. Here they keep the “winter room” cold even in the warmth of summer! Once you have made your leisurely way through the exhibition make sure you taste the amazing buffet of northern delicacies which have been prepared over an open fire. You can also drive an ATV, chance your arm at axe-throwing or bathe in an outdoor bathtub. The coastal city of Skellefteå is crammed with all kinds of adventures. The gaming centre, situated right inside Viberget mountain, offers a number of quests and challenges for the whole family - who will emerge the champion? In the Nordanå park is a great play area suitable for children of all ages. A look at Skellefteå Museum’s summer programme is highly recommended. We’re sure you will find something that will interest you.
