“Our diversity enriches us.”

Explore the 37,000 objects at the Multiversity Galleries such as the Interior Salish woven baskets and the Kwakwaka’wakw masks.

MOA houses some 36,000 ethnographic objects, as well as 535,000 archaeological objects under the care of UBC’s Laboratory of Archaeology. The ethnographic materials derive from many parts of the world, including the South Pacific, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. There are approximately 6,000 objects from B.C’s First Nations in MOA’s collections; we also house 5,000 textiles from around the world, 3,500 coins, and 4,400 works on paper/made of paper. An additional 700 objects are at any one time on temporary exhibit at MOA, loaned to other institutions, undergoing conservation work, or under consideration by students and researchers.

MOA MULTIVERSITY GALLERIES Ways of Knowing

MOA has dramatically redesigned our Multiversity Galleries – formerly known as Visible Storage Galleries – to provide maximum visual access to some 16,000 objects from around the world. MOA is perhaps best known for its collections from the Northwest Coast of BC, including those from Musqueam, on whose traditional territory the Museum is built. However, the Museum also houses rich and deep contemporary and historic collections from around the world: Asia, Africa, Europe, South, Central, and North America, Australia, and the Pacific. We invite you to explore the collections on your own, as part of a tour, through our MOA CAT computer kiosks, or online, anytime at www.moa.ubc.ca.

“Our arts and culture tell others who we are.”

Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures, an exhibition featuring 12 international artists engaged in a common dialogue about cultural boundaries

In recognition of Michael Audain’s generous contributions to MOA, a new 5,800 sq ft exhibition hall has been named in his honour. The spacious new Audain Gallery attracts international attention and enables MOA to uphold its reputation as a primary venue for award-winning exhibitions, many in conjunction with local cultural communities.

THE AUDAIN GALLERY MOA’s first exhibition in this spectacular exhibit hall launches on Jan. 26, 2010 with Border Zones: New Art Across Cultures, an exhibition featuring 12 international artists engaged in a common dialogue about cultural boundaries –within and between communities, art practices, audiences, or institutions — and the possibility of translation across them.

Through a surprising diversity of media and approaches, the artists selected for this show use the idea of a border space to raise questions about migration and identity, knowledge protection and access, and the permeability and construction of boundaries cross-culturally. Borders are considered not only as lines or markers that divide cultures, but also as uncertain spaces that are sites of encounter and transformation.
