184 days of Expo, thousands of events around the entire metropolitan area of Milan. Even glass has its say
or 184 days, in the eyes of the entire world, RhoPero will be the citadel of nutrition. Every day, from 10 am to 11 pm, in an ongoing series of events, meetings, entertainment and initiatives, the core theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” will be expressed in the most varied ways and interpretations. The 34th Universal Expo has finally opened. In the Milan area alone, 17,000 events are slated to take place -- in hundreds of locations, around four key concepts (innovation, energy savings, safeguarding the environment and natural resources), in four theme areas – the Future Food District, Children’s Park, Biodiversity Park and Arts & Foods. An experience you won’t want to miss. At Expo, the world of glass has also made its contribution. The Japan Pavilion commissioned AGC, global leader in the glass industry, to design the facade of its more than 1,100 sq. m Expo pavilion using its “infoverre” and Sunlux products. We spoke with representatives of the Japanese group at the Salone del Mobile furniture show in Milan a few days ago. Check out the video of our interview. Glass is also a featured player in the Italian area of Expo. In the CibusèItalia Pavilion by Federalimentare (one of the association’s technical partners is Saint-Gobain Glass Italia), the partnership with Assovetro and CoReVe will be highlighted on May 26 with the award ceremony for the 8th edition of the 2014-2015 scholastic competition “Glass & food: safety, flavor and sustainability”. And China Glass is just around the corner, one of our industry’s three international trade shows of prime interest. GIMAV, as it is each year, will be there. But, we have a lot of reading to do in this issue. So, let’s get started.

News and confirmed participation in China Glass 2015. The task for the Gimav-ICE group will be to uphold the acclaim of Italianmade machinery and technology

Renata Gaffo
T
he New China International Exhibition Center in Beijing will host the 26th edition of China Glass from May 20th to 23rd, 2015. This is an annual ‘must’ event for Gimav and its members, and the proof
is in the number of participants. Similar to recent editions, this year about 30 firms will participate in the GimavVitrum-ICE group stand, occupying an overall exhibit area of more than 1,000 sq. meters. According to Renata Gaffo, director of Gimav and Vitrum: “the three companies that historically have operated independently in the Chinese market, that is: Biesse Intermac,
ottero and Fenzi, have amped up B their participation by reserving very large stands – 240, 270 and 126 sq. meters, respectively. Joining them is BDF, with 60 square meters, along with impressively-sized spaces for Forel and Bovone, as well. In essence, compared to 2014, this year our goal was greater qualification from an exhibition standpoint, of all the participating enterprises”. It is worth mentioning that 2015 also welcomes the debut of two
new members as participants in the group stand: RCN Engineering and Pneumofore. But, there is even more news. “This year - continues director Gaffo - BDF will also have a machine on display and, at least for our group stands, it is one of the rare appearances from the hollow glass sector”. To exhibit functioning machines for hot-processing of glass -- unlike those for secondary processing (for example, decoration) or those for flat glass processing -is indeed a choice that entails a high degree of technical difficulty, enough to discourage their operation at trade shows. “Speaking of which - recalls Gaffo - at Düsseldorf several years ago, I remember a company found a novel solution to this problem by replacing molten glass with honey for its demonstrations, since the consistency of honey is quite similar”. Expectations for this edition of China Glass once again are running high. “Although on the rise, there is no longer any talk of China’s growth reaching double-digits – in the director’s analysis - it is true that the market is still far from being saturated. It should also be emphasized that the People’s Republic has begun to sharpen its taste for quality in the final product and, for this reason, today’s clients are willing to

invest, not only to meet demand from the local market, but also from foreign markets”. “But, we should not forget - she emphasizes - that, to avoid the one-sided ‘clash’ over the price factor, our strategy has also changed -- abandoning production of the more simple machines in favor of elevating the quality standards of the more complex technologies”. Of course, the cost of Chinese labor is still much lower than ours, a variable that drives some companies to outsource part of their production. “Only a part, however - says Renata Gaffo - because, the differentiating elements in our sector are the ‘brains and heart’ of the machines, which
are always made here in Italy. In secondary glass processing, the distance between an Italian-made product and that of our foreign competitors has closed slightly over time because, obviously, other countries have also figured out how to make improvements. But around the world, it is common knowledge that if they want to achieve the highest quality results, certain processes must be carried out on Italian machines. And, it is precisely the will to maintain this fame that drives our members’ work, in order to safeguard our country’s industry and a position of predominance that may no longer be one of absolute leadership, but certainly, in the world of glass, makes a big difference”.

breakneck pace to a more stable rhythm. imF division chief for the Asia-Pacific area, Steven Barnett, sees this as a transition to a “new normal”, and a “safer and more sustainable” economy. According to the imF’s World Economic outlook forecast, if the Chinese economy grows by about 6.8% in 2015 (in 2014 it was 7.4%), it will slow to about 6.3% in 2016. if successfully implemented, the reform agenda put into effect by the Chinese government will make it possible contain financial risks and rebalance the economy. Among the key sectors where reforms should be accelerated, as pointed out by Barnett himself, is a liberalization of the financial sector, extending private businesses the same treatment as state-owned companies. meanwhile, industrial production rose by 5.6%, falling short of market expectations for a 7% increase – its lowest level since November 2008. Exports and im-
ports were down (-15%) and (-12.7%) respectively, compared to the previous year. on the other hand, as indicated in the most recent figures from iCE, Europe is still among the destinations of choice for Chinese foreign direct investments (FDi) that last year reached a record of 18 billion uS dollars. At the top of the list: Great Britain; followed by italy. this is a country that, in the last thirty years, has progressed by leaps and bounds, with record-setting annual growth, relying almost entirely on exports rather than on domestic consumption. And yet, something is changing, deep down. Right now, in China, consumption is gaining over investments, as are services over manufacturing, and domestic demand over exports – just think, in 2014 consumption contributed more than 50% to GDP growth. So, the second world economy is approaching a model more like the one in place in Europe and the united States. there’s nothing wrong with that, especially considering that with the increase in demand for goods and services, valuable new opportunities will open up for the rest of the world.

ccording to Jesse Lin, marketing manager of Bottero Foshan, “The Chinese market is characterized not only by increasingly competitive prices, but also the need for reliability dictated by an intensive use of glass production and processing lines.” Jesse Lin goes on to emphasize that “Meeting these expectations has led Bottero to introduce two new machine models at the China Glass Fair, which has long since become one of the leading international events in the industry.” The new solutions exhibited in the Bottero stand belong to the horizontal cutting and grinding family and are both designed to be entry-level versions of high-performance lines. “At this fair,” continues Jesse Lin, “we expect to see a large turnout and great interest considering that we’re in the
Bottero introduces two new machines designed as entry level models of high-performance lines. For hollow glass, the company’s NNPB technology is now available on the market country that produces and consumes the most glass worldwide. The slight downswing in the building sector and the uncertainty that still plagues the solar energy market are well offset by other sectors in steady growth, such as the automotive, furniture and household appliances sectors.” The progressive increase in the cost

Bottero has taken full advantage of this opportunity and, with its long and far-reaching experience in the integration of production systems, has already achieved concrete results with the supply of automated warehouse management systems integrated with cutting, breakout and grinding lines. In addition to its formidable presence in the flat glass sector, Bottero also operates on the Chinese hollow glass market. In fact, the company was the first to assemble a forming line in China, ma-
king the NNPB technology available on the market. By offering specific training programs in addition to the technological package, this technology for lighter weight glass containers is increasingly in tune with the clientele’s production needs.

ore automation, less labor. This is the inevitable dictate imposed by today’s market. And it’s precisely the path Elettromeccanica Bovone is determined to take in order to better meet current needs of the global clientele. “To complete our wide range of edgers and bevellers,” explains the company’s sales manager, Federica Bovone, “we’ve designed and built a complete robotic station, with two edgers and two robots, in close partnership with Comau, a global leader in production and automation solutions. Unfortunately we’re unable to exhibit these machines at China Glass, but our sales managers will be at the fair ready to show interested visitors all the software tools and videos necessary to explain the operation and characteristics of the system.”
In close collaboration with Comau, Elettromeccanica Bovone has developed a complete robotic station. Its features will be demonstrated in Beijing

Whereas for the Ovada-based (Alessandria, Northern Italy) company, the future is becoming even greener. According to the manager, “China actually suffers from an extremely high level of pollution, while coal supplies are in net decline. So even the People’s Republic of China is heading, slowly but surely, towards green energies. In this regard, flat mirror production lines have been expanded to include production lines for the flat and curved CSP mirrors used in solar stations. A curved
CSP line is starting up right now in China, and we expect to see growing interest in this type of production.” Elettromeccanica Bovone’s primary target remains the exporting companies, since “the quality and technology of our machines entail non-applicability to the Chinese domestic market, which basically doesn’t require these characteristics. We do, however, foresee an increase in demand in every one of our production fields, so we’re optimistic about the future.”

on the Asian market for more than thirty years. “This is why,” Pozzi explains, “the exhibition gives us the opportunity to reconnect directly with well-established customers operating in the region. We’re able to reach an ideal consumer base ranging all the way from China to the Southeast Asian countries, and customers have shown great appreciation for the quality and characteristics of our products.” “The goal we’ve set,” stresses Pozzi, “is to acquire new customers in the Southeast Asian market. In China we have to
be increasingly competitive on all fronts, supplying a product with very high and, above all, consistent quality. It’s a challenge that we took on ten years ago, which has now guaranteed us an important scope and leadership position. And we intend to continue down this road.” This confidence is also confirmed in the forecasts for the year in progress. “We don’t foresee any decline in general and believe that, all things considered, 2015 will witness the same very positive results scored in 2014,” concludes the General Manager.

cmi OTG is one of today’s most influential Italian companies in the glass processing sector. Even though it’s mainly involved in the production of complete lines for glass tube processing (for laboratories and glassworks making containers for pharmaceutical and cosmetic use), Ocmi also boasts an excellent reputation among European and non-European manufac-
Stem sealing process
turers of high-quality tableware. The production of wine glasses and other stemware in crystal or soda-lime glass requires not only experienced operators, but also the support of high-quality, state-of-theart machinery in order to obtain products that can truly appeal to the market. In this area, the equipment manufactured by Ocmi performs the sealing of the bowl as well as the stretching of the stem, if china glass 2015

necessary. The immense variety of items produced is testimony to the utmost flexibility of the machine that performs these two operations. The sealing/stretching machine for stemware is the top-of-the-line product in the Ocmi tableware division. Available in versions with 42, 48 and 60 stations, it can process sealed and/or stretched stemware up to a total height of 350mm, with a maximum mechanical speed of 80 pieces/minute in the SA60. It has two loaders for bowls and stems and an unloader that picks up the finished items and deposits them on the output belt. After the bowls and stems are loaded in the upper and lower grippers, they are processed with a series of burners designed for heating, sealing and stretching if necessary. These operations are carried out on appropriate cams that enable vertical movement of the lower grippers. The gripping terminals can be designed for internal or external gripping of the bowl, and the
Finished stem glass
grippers can be built for mechanical or suction gripping. A camera control system can be installed after the loading zone for automatic adjustment of the upper gripper in order to make the height of the sealing point uniform in all sections and offset any discrepancies in the heights of the bowls. Upon request, the camera can also check the heights of single-piece stem glasses in order to adjust the position of the upper gripper before stretching. The Italian market, one of the first to try the Ocmi sealing/stretching machine, immediately appreciated its design and outstanding flexibility, ideally suited to maintaining and even improving the high-quality standards required for these items. Now this Ocmi solution is the true benchmark for leading stemware manufacturers not only in Europe, where stemware production is already a consolidated business, but also in Far East markets, which are increasingly focused on finished product quality.

Today the RS812 is ready to move to the next level and promote ‘made in Italy’ technology for flat glass processing in China Glass 2015. The machine was designed and built for the production of variable radius or cant corners, even with different dimensions on each corner of the sheet. The machine’s operation is completely automatic and requires no intervention or adjustment by the operator.

It can be used alone or in combination with grinding/drilling lines. As Cinzia Schiatti explains, “This year we have a stand of our own at China Glass, where visitors can find all the technical documentation regarding our machinery, including the innovations, and take advantage of our expertise. For us, participating in this event means establishing an ongoing relationship with this particular market. We’re actively looking for new companies and outlets, while at the same time consolidating our existing business relations.” “The scope of this event is particularly interesting,” she continues, “as it attracts operators from local areas, bordering countries and even worldwide. What’s the outlook? Positive,
of course: we expect signs of recovery.” For Officina Meccanica Schiatti Angelo, therefore, the challenges prove to be quite demanding. As Schiatti points out, “The market requires increasingly high performing machinery able to meet specific needs. Through our extensive background of knowledge and technical expertise, resulting from over half a century of experience, we aim to customize our products to meet the customers’ needs as far as possible without compromising our time-honored quality/ price ratio.” And even though it’s hard to make forecasts for the near future, “we hope that the building sector recovers and, with it, the e ntire industry,” concludes Schiatti.

Dino Zandonella Necca
The show’s newlyelected president, Dino Zandonella Necca, takes an optimistic view of the October event. The economic situation is “very positive” compete is burdened by the increased cost of labor that swells by about 20% each year; and, despite it all, our machine and accessories manufacturers also experienced a growth phase in 2014”. Now, “we need to build partnerships among all of Italy’s glass industry stakeholders, because this will have a multiplier effect”.
Vitrum’s newly-elected president, Dino Zandonella Necca, outlines the elements that underlie his realistically optimistic outlook for the forthcoming edition of the leading international trade show specialized in machinery, equipment and special glass-processing products, slated to take place in Milan October 6th to 9th. “Enthusiasm is high, because the available space has almost entirely been booked - he adds - and I am pleased to see, alongside the stands of the historic, major-league exhibitors, new companies, even small ones, interested in using Vitrum as a launch pad and booking space”. The trade fair, in other words, “has got its mojo back, because businesses are starting to realize that, by itself, internet contact with their customers is not enough; it is crucial to have a place to meet and solidify relationships”. In this context, Vitrum 2015, with
the collective planning mode put into place last November, and backed by Zandonella Necca, expects to be a game-changer. “Our aim is to be of service to Italy’s entire glass industry and thus make Vitrum a meeting place, for working together, a valuable opportunity that will allow Italy and the entire glass industry to present itself to the world, with its supply chain and demonstrate the quality and technological innovation that it is known for”. And that’s not all. The president is convinced that Vitrum must be “a special occasion for the visitors who arrive from overseas - they need to go home not only impressed with the innovations and technology they saw, but also having gained valuable insights”. In this regard, the 30th ATIV Conference - Advances in Glass Processing: Key innovation topics in hollow and flat glass” - will be held on October 8th, inside Vitrum. Exhibits will be created to allow up-close and hands-on experience with special glass objects. A very unique mascot will be on display: a Roman vase with two gladiators that Vitrum, in partnership with many other industry representatives, will contribute to having restored. “Vitrum – concludes the president-elect – opens its doors during the final month of Expo 2015, at its peak moment. A favorable coincidence that will contribute to making a positive difference for the sector”.

OVERSEAS PERFORMANCE IMPROVES: first quarter ignites hopeS by Chiara Marseglia - photo O.M. Schiatti Angelo

Gimav President Cinzia Schiatti confirms: “For flat glass, the United States and South America are still our peak markets, but Sub-Saharan Africa may also prove to be fertile business terrain”
“F
oreign market performance has improved considerably, compared to the same period in 2014. In the first quarter of this year, in fact, the recovery was heartwarming but the weakness of our currency certainly played a role in that”. This is how Cinzia Schiatti, president of Gimav, summarizes the trends for this first period of 2015. A phase in which outside pressures are fanning Italy’s recovery, while waiting for a more substantial acceleration. Of course, the figures remain cautionary, but the most recent data from Confindustria indicate that the stranglehold is starting to ease. The Confindustria Study Center expects Italy’s industrial produc-
tion to increase, the PMI manufacturing index to rise, with total orders on an upward growth curve (from 51.2 to 54.5) and the OECD economic indicators forecast an additional, stronger increase in GDP during the summer months. Figures that lead to a hike in the growth of Italy’s GDP in 2015 and 2016. But exports are the real signature achievement, especially for Gimav member firms, which bolsters the hopes for improvement, driven by the effects of a weakened Euro and stronger European demand. Based on quarterly reports from Confindustria, industry expectations with regard to foreign demand for the 2nd quarter are at their highest level since 2011. “The trend in exports - states Cinzia Schiatti - seems to be on the rise, at least as long as the Euro exchange rate

tips in our favor. The liveliest market for flat glass is still America. The ongoing boom in the US and South American markets coincides, however, with a bottomingout of the Brazilian market, which has taken a considerable dive while, in 2014 it was the strongest one of all. Even SubSaharan Africa is beginning to look like fertile business terrain, but the difficulties tied to its credit system remain – the local banks are slow to make loans...”. “South Africa and the Gulf nations - continues the president of Gimav - continue to be favorable markets. And, if Malaysia is the best game in Asia, Thailand is the one in most difficulty, due to its problematic domestic policies”. “In Europe and in Italy - reflects Cinzia Schiatti - albeit a bit late, some policy choices aimed to bring about change are currently under way, in the hopes of bringing an end to the recession that has held us in its grip these last few years”. Meanwhile, however, we must also focus our attention on the forthcoming trade shows – “For us, China Glass and Mir Stekla are key indicators of trends in their respective, and always strategic markets, despite the fact that very different dynamics are in play in China and in Russia, the evolution of which - she concludes - could turn out to be decisive for our industry”.

ttendance was not outstanding but the visitors who came were wellinformed professionals; in other words, representatives from companies truly interested in innovation and therefore, potential buyers”. Deputy Director of Gimav, Laura Biason, summarizes the group experience at Glasspex India -the trade show held in Mumbai March 13-15 -- where the Gimav group stand included five Italian member firms and two, Bottero and Pneumofore, with their own separate stands. “Five from hollow glass and two from flat glass – explains Biason - and all of them were pleased with the results”. This year, in addition to the companies participating with their own stands, a “catalog library” was also installed in

the group area, in cooperation with ICE. “It was an opportunity for the companies that could not, or had decided not to attend personally, to be represented by their catalogs. We handled the distribution to companies based on their specific needs”, continues the manager. In this area as well, “there was a certain degree of success, because in several cases, the attendees showed they were already familiar with Italian brands and impressed with their quality”. With this idea, developed in cooperation with ICE, Gimav made it possible for Italian glass machinery manufacturers to showcase their innovations in both hollow and flat glass. The reference market for the event is
India and, considering just how vast India is -- large enough to be defined as a subcontinent -- the atmosphere at Glasspex was that of a nation energized and radiating with a desire for growth. India’s association of Chambers of Commerce estimates annual growth of the glass market to be about 15% over the next three years, and we saw evidence of that during the threeday show. “The companies may be small, but they are very keen on made-in-Italy products – confirms deputy director Biason. The market appeared lively and focused on innovation and high-quality solutions. As for demand, it ranged across all types of product options: from new systems to implementations and requests for individual

parts or tools. There were also many requests for information on flat glass products”. At the end of the day, “the participating companies were satisfied, in part, because they also took advantage of the opportunity to strengthen relationships with representatives of local firms with whom they were already in contact”, sums up Biason. For that matter, the impression we had of the performance of India’s economy was, without a doubt, positive. A perception supported by the reports provided by ICE’s Mumbai office and distributed directly by government agencies. “The
new political term inaugurated with the election of Prime Minister Modi Narendra in 2014 appears to be exerting a positive influence on the economy, thanks to its commitment to attracting investments and driving growth in the country, thereby strengthening it”, relates the deputy director, following a direct exchange of information that took place “in the field”. Forecasts by the IMF see the Indian economy on an ascending curve that will surpass China’s in 2016. The forecasts for 2015 predict a 6.3% increase in GDP, which is expected to reach 6.5% next year.
Business opportunities with “Make in India” “Make in India” is an impressive government program launched to attract investments, support innovation, facilitate growth, protect intellectual property and promote the construction of infrastructures throughout the entire country, using cutting edge methods and technologies. A global initiative launched by the Government led by Modi Narendra, this is a program designed to re-launch India, and its primary objective is to attract foreign investment. The “Make in India” program identifies 25 sectors of the economy where its energies are being focused, and many of these have glass as a component: automotive, aviation, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, construction, defense, electric machines, textiles, food production, railways, renewable energy, and biotechnology, just to name a few.

in cooperation with Fiera Milano. In 1980, Gimav (Italian Manufacturers’ Association of Machinery, Accessories and Special Products for Glass Processing) was established and in 1983 the Vitrum exhibition organization company was set up by Dino Fenzi, Annibale Besana, Angelo Lovati, Maurizio Enrico, Adelio Lattuada, Piero La Sala, and Dino Bavelloni. These are the first, important dates of the 36-year-old association with its 29 ensuing exhibitions. We conti-
nue this historical overview with Gimav and Vitrum Director Renata Gaffo, picking up from where we left off two months ago. The year is 1997. Vitrum relocates from Lacchiarella to Portello as do all the other machine tool exhibitions. The second golden decade of the glass industry is about to begin. A boom expressed in figures “As in the 10 previous years, the period spanning from 1997 thru 2007
could be considered a golden one for the industry. The 10 th International Exhibition of Glass Processing Machinery, Equipment and Special Products for Glass Processing confirmed the vitality of the sector and built up its image in Italy and across the world. A total of 313 exhibitors (105 from other countries) and 19 participating countries: over 12 percent more than in 1995. What made us even happier however was the ongoing crescendo of early bookings for the following
exhibitions. In 1999 there were 385 participants (+23% more than the previous show), 421 in 2001, 432 in 2003, 438 in 2005, and reaching a record at the 15th exhibition. 2007: the best year ever “2007 was an incredible year. It was the year when we posted peak visitor attendance, exhibition space, and image spinoffs: the 15 th exhibition truly reflected the global market trend for the year, not just for the glass in-

dustry but for the entire machine and equipment industry. It was an exceptional, almost intoxicated, year with double-digit growth rates. There were 308 exhibitors from all over Italy and 273 foreign exhibitors from 28 countries. We’re talking about a +14.5 percent increase in Italian exhibitors and a huge +61.54 percent increase in foreign exhibitors versus 2005! Things were going too well, but the global economic-financial crisis hit our industry a little bit later than other sectors, between the last two months of 2008 and the beginning of 2009”. The new competitors: China and Russia “In the previous decade the only true competitor of the Italian international showcase was Glasstec. In fact, China Glass, while being a huge exhibition in terms of the surface area it occupied, could not be a real competitor: the visitors and exhibitors were mainly local, and the quality of the products on display was rather low. In parallel, however, as the Chinese industry grew, the Chinese exhibition was able to become a reference point: first for almost all of Asia, then for Australia and gradually for

Europe. Gimav companies did not participate in the first exhibitions but this was something that we could not miss. So we decided to attend with a group participation but only in Beijing on odd-numbered years; since 2004 it has become an annual appointment for us too, even the Shanghai event. In 2004 Gimav had a 288 sq.m exhibition space; now it’s more than 1,000 sq.m... Now, China Glass is the No. 1 exhibition worldwide in terms of visitors, exhibitors, and exhibition space. As regards Mir Stekla, now in its 17th session, our first participation dates back to 1990. However, it was not really a group participation: ours
was an ‘Italian Point’ inside the ICE space. Companies did not have their own exhibition space. Luckily this didn’t last for long and our members were able to take their machines to Russia too”. The most significant events “We have always organized events at every Vitrum that initially focused on historical-artistic themes. Among these, the result of a meeting with Professor Luigi Fozzati and architect Stefano Filippi, superintendent of Fine Arts and Architecture in Venice is one that I will never forget. They told me about the painstaking, enthralling recovery of a sunken ship in the Adriatic Sea containing valuable glass artifacts. This led to the ‘The Adriatic, the glass route’, exhibition in 1995. Then, in 1997, the experience of Professor Fozzati inspired the ‘Glass Stories’ exhibition of archeological findings from the Adriatic glass routes spanning from the 2nd century B.C. to the 16th century A.D. organized in partnership with the Science and Technology Museum in Milan, which hosted the exhibition in parallel with Vitrum for a month. That same year Professor Fozzati also managed to recover a Byzantine anchor, which
was unique because still intact. We funded the restoration work which took about 18 months. Then we had Eurostand create a huge made-tomeasure tank full of water for the anchor that was placed on show to the public during Vitrum ’97”. “In 2005 we focused on melding culture with the technical aspects. The ‘Art and Technology’ exhibition – which occupied 1,000 square meters – hosted a selection of 45 precious examples of hollow glass, on loan from two important glass museums, the Museo del Cristallo of Colle Val d’Elsa (Siena) and the Museo del Vetro di Altare (Savona), alongside cuttingedge projects presented by some of the world’s leading producers of flat glass: Saint-Gobain Glass, OmniDecor, Pilkington, Glaverbel, Manfredonia Vetro - Sangalli Group Industries and Guardian. Last, in 2007 there was a memorable party with more than 350 guests invited to the stunning Palazzo della Pelota in the heart of Milan. The second golden decade ended on a perfect note in the famous ‘artists’ district’, crowning the evening with acrobatic exhibitions by the artists in their performance dedicated to the four elements of earth, air, fire and water”.

he curtain is going up on Expo 2015. And, through October 31, 2015, it will be the showcase where participating countries will present their technologies, ideas and innovative solutions designed to provide a concrete solution to a vital need for the entire Planet -- to ensure food that is healthy, safe and sufficient to feed everyone. Expo by the numbers: 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area; 145 participating countries, representing 94% of the world’s population; 3 international organizations (the UN, CERN and the European Commission), along with 15 private organizations; 6 corporate pavilions; and more than 20 million visitors expected to attend this peak event hosted by Italy. Focal point of the Universal Expo mission is the Italy Pavilion, and its symbol is the Tree of Life.
The Universal Expo opens its doors. Its mission: to provide a practical solution to a vital need shared by the entire planet – food that is healthy, safe and in sufficient supply “Our aim was to find a contemporary icon symbolic of Italy and the Italians, to create an object with a strong identity that speaks to the past and the future of our country. Our experience in creating Olympic ceremonies taught us the importance of symbols and we believe the Italy Pavilion has found its own. The Tree of Life is a living expression of the concept of the nursery, where the seeds
45 of the future are grown – it is forward motion, dynamic momentum that inspires us all”. This is how architect Marco Balich, president of Balich Worldwide Shows and artistic director for the Italy Pavilion, explained the core concept of the “Tree of Life”. At 37 meters, the Tree of Life is the tallest structure at the Universal Expo in Milan. Designed by Balich, on a concept by the Giò Forma Studio, it is located in the center of the Lake Arena, the Expo’s largest open-air space, facing Palazzo Italia, official site of the host country. Mounted atop the steel trunk, its wooden foliage, 45 meters in diameter, weighs 70 tons and was lifted into place in less than two hours, thanks to the use of two
hoists connected to 300 meters of steel cable. The entire construction called for the use of 90 tons of wood and 150 tons of steel. Seven kilometers of LED lights will illuminate more than 1,200 performances that will enthrall spectators with music, choreographed water features, light shows and 3-D effects. The ambitious project was created through the contributions of three Italian organizations that believed in the project from its very beginning. Orgoglio Brescia, a Brescia consortium made up of 19 local institutions and businesses; Coldiretti, the primary organization of Italian and European farmers; and Pirelli, global leader in innovation and state-ofthe-art technology in Italy and the world.

“Squero” Collection led to Moulaye Niang being known as Venice’s “African glass bead maker”. It is here that he works in his “Muranero” shop. He is an impassioned defender of Murano and its priceless heritage of glass history and culture. “I have appealed to many different agencies to make this island a UNESCO world heritage site. Just like the people of Mu-
rano, I too, am convinced that some things from this island should not be allowed to leave and I am filled with sadness when I see signs for Chinese glass. No, in Murano there should only be glass created and crafted there”, declares Moulaye. Born in Senegal, at the age of 10 he moved to Paris where his family lives. In 2001 he began

to knock on the doors of the Murano glass masters, without finding anyone willing to open. “Today – he remarks - I have a privilege that is only extended to the children of the island: to come and go from the glassworks at will. I, too, have become a bit wild, insular, and provincial. I am in love with this place; I have loved it since the very first moment”. Moulaye Niang has studied all the glassmaking techniques; he is able to make anything he wants, but he has chosen to specialize in glass beads. “In the beginning, the ties with Afri-
ca were very evident. There, beads are used in all kinds of situations, by women and men. The men, no matter whether Christian or Muslim, always carry a rosary of beads”, he reveals. Then, this initial core of inspiration spiraled in many directions. “People from all over the globe come to Venice and everyone who visits my shop becomes a source of inspiration – I look at the colors they are wearing, how they’re paired, their favorites. I take it all in and then create my own things at Muranero”. From the standpoint of glassmaking technique, explains Niang, “for the last 14 years I studied all the
methods, from Muranese to American and Chinese. I tried to find the common thread and from there, began to build my own creations”. In Murano, for example, “they have always made long, blown beads, and I make them solid; that way they are stronger and don’t break; I draw out the murrines [millefiori] so they become a thread that wraps around the bead”. Just a few examples of what Niang creates in his shop, which has also become a place where students from the technical schools come to apprentice and learn. Interestingly, after having overcome
their reluctance and welcomed him into the ‘inner circle’, the Muranese glass masters tried to prevent him from sharing what he had learned. But, just as when he knocked and no one opened, he was not easily deterred; so, to avoid conflict, he went to Africa to teach. “In Senegal, Mali and Ghana there is an ancient glassmaking tradition – he reminds us. I taught 3-month courses, introducing new techniques, but I admonished them to keep the traditional techniques alive as well”. The love affair between Niang and Venice struck when he watched glass master Vittorio Costantini at work. A love nourished by the atmosphere of Venice, seducing him away from the “fast-paced frenzy of Paris”. “I like Venice because it moves slowly, the vaporetti give it a different pace, its 450 bridges, the millions of tourists every year who slow it down. I like Venice’s ‘campi’ [squares] where families sit outdoors and old people gather; it reminds me of Africa.” Costantini warned me: “Murano is a closed world; it won’t let you in. It took me two years to break through their reticence, coming back day after day, never taking no for an answer. In the end, they told me: Your light-heartedness is disconcerting”.

And yet, the future holds many other challenges, as well – Expo 2015 is a huge opportunity and we are not ruling out participation by Promovetro in an event that could take place in the Venice Lagoon or on site in Milan”. In the words of Luciano Gambaro, president of Consorzio Promovetro, established in 1985 by a group of artisans engaged in producing Murano artistic glass. Today, more than ever, the association is committed to the stewardship, conservation, and defense of this priceless cultural heritage that is the historic art of Murano glassmaking.

mindful understanding of the times we live in and aimed at approaching international markets, by leveraging use of the Internet and social networks. Major media investments were made that allowed the Consortium’s social media channels to gain nearly 100,000 followers, driven in part by some key operations, like the EGE - European Glass Experience - international competition, that challenged young European artists and designers with the task of raising awareness around the artistic and cultural heritage of glass. soon to be presented directly to the Italian astronaut upon her return from space. The ‘mission’ is to make Murano the capital of artistic glass. On the other hand, it is quite clear that being able to verify origin and traceability is crucial in order to maintain market interest in a specific product. The strength of a certified brand benefits not only the manufacturer but also the entire supply chain by engaging the one link (at the end of the chain) that turns out to be the most important: the buyer. And, the perfect
solution in this case, for the vastlypopular world of Murano glass, was the creation of the Vetro Artistico Murano brand, introduced and governed by Veneto Region law number 70 of 23rd December 1994 and in use since 2001. Property of the Veneto Region, the brand is managed by Consorzio Promovetro Murano and is licensed, for a renewable period of three years, to all those enterprises that demonstrate their meticulous adherence to this historic production tradition.

attended the event, especially window and door frame manufacturers and industry technicians; a good number considering the current situation. The meeting was a key event, not only in light of the presentation by Mario Boschi, president of the UNI Flat Glass Commission, but also - he explains - in terms of the topics of current interest to window and door manufacturers”. What came to light at the day’s meetings, and in general, from the activities of Anfit, is “a certain disconnect between window manufacturers and glass-makers”, declares Piero Mariotto. “Unfortunately, the individual qualities of glass, a material that occupies about 80% of the surface of glass windows and doors, are still little-known to window manufacturers and this reflects on the sale of these products. Information should form an integral part of a broader understanding and culture of the entire production system, because the qualitative aspects and functional characteristics (thermal, acoustic and safety) represent - he vigorously affirms - a major strength of Italian production, especially when compared to the current competition from Eastern European manufacturers who operate under different standards. The UNI 7697 standard on ‘Safety criteria in glassmaking applications’ and the Cpr 305/11 Regulation on the subject of the responsibility of glassmakers and window manufacturers
and the documentation to provide and receive, are governed by more advanced standards in Italy than required by the European standard. It is crucial that testing/ checks carried out in Italy, even with regard to CE marking -- that is currently applied on a fairly random basis -- be high to prevent the end consumer from finding himself with a price discrepancy between products offered by Italian manufacturers and foreign ones. Our perception of quality and safety - says Piero Mariotto - is very high, and this is one more reason why we provide information to our clients. We need to get away from pricing policies to make the most of a product that is qualitatively superior and safer. Through various activities and three key association projects revolving around the Quality Mark, the Energy Label and the Installation Label, we are trying to raise the level of performance of both the product
and its installation: specialization - concludes the technical director of Anfit - is the future of our industry. Declaration of Performance - DoP As of July 1, 2013 the characteristics of glass must be certified by a Declaration of Performance - DoP, required for all construction products sold in the EU. The declaration, a prerequisite for the CE mark, is based on the assessment and testing of the consistency of performance of the product itself. In addition to confirmation of compliance with the regulations already established by the Declaration of Conformity, the DoP must be completed, using the form indicated in Cpr 305/11, by the manufacturer prior to placing the product on the market, and include information regarding dangerous substances and, above all, must be provided every time the product is made available to the market. The manufacturer can provide the DoP in paper format or electronically, or it can publish a copy of the DoP on its website. Quality Mark The Quality Mark, which can only be obtained by Anfit member companies, authorizes them to issue, based on a strict protocol and under supervision of the
Association, the Energy Label and Certificate of Origin that, in addition to certifying the quality, safety in use and the production of windows on national territory/in Italy, ensure compliance with Italian laws and regulations. To be indicated on the energy label and Certificate of Origin, which anticipate provisions contained in EU Directive 2010/30, are not only the energy classes for each window frame, but also the degree of thermal insulation ensured by the window and its summer performance data (indicated City by City), as well as identification data for the window, including the production lot number and Made in Italy origin.
