Communication equals synergy by

Together, intents and resources form a critical mass: we are all stronger in a group

Chiara Marseglia

O

ne word more than any other dominates the following pages: synergy. This word is anything but an everyday noun and its etymology refers to a wide-ranging concept that should not be used inappropriately. This – never-to-be-taken-for-granted – ability to pool our resources and work to achieve a common goal is as invoked as it is feared. And yet, if we work together we really can improve. The very evolution of mankind has demonstrated that aggregation imparts strength; together, intents and resources form a critical mass: everybody feels stronger and more confident when in a group, both outside and inside their community. What’s more, a unifying, close relationship promotes idea exchange and the transfer and acquisition of mutual knowledge, trust and proactivity. Even “communication” conveys a “synergetic” philosophy: it means using words to “share” something that belongs to us, making something that is ours known to others and partaking in it with them. Clearly transmitting our intents, letting others know what our goals are, and letting others share our satisfaction of achieving results are part of the desire to be a positive thinker, committed to a less individualistic future, and more confident and ready to welcome all things new. Enjoy.

he Vitrum press conference took place on Tuesday evening, 12 May at an extraordinary location: Terrazza Martini, which has always been a cultural and social meeting place in Milan dominating the heart of the city since 1958 with a breathtaking 360-degree view from the last floor. As the sun sets, the main attractions in the capital city of Lombardy are gradually illuminated: Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Duomo spires and Torre Velasca. The spellbound journalists were invited to share the beauty of Italy with the helmsmen of Vitrum and Gimav,

Dino Zandonella Necca ATIV President Alessandro Bandini and Alessandro Lamura from the Mechanical, Chemical, Energy and Environmental Office at ICE (Italian Trade Agency). We interviewed engineer Dino Zandonella Necca at the conference, who was appointed Vitrum president in April along with deputy presidents Aldo Faccenda (Bottero Spa) and Cinzia Schiatti (Schiatti Angelo Srl). Vitrum - Expo, Milan - Italy: must-sees, why? “This year, Vitrum like Expo, represents renewal after the rather deep

recession lasting almost 8 years. There are very strong signs of a recovery from outside our country but in Italy too, as we saw admiring the changes in Milan’s skyline during a walk with the journalists: an incredible sign of Italy’s ability to build in a short space of time, in a well-organized way, on a human scale and innovatively. In my opinion, it marks a turning point: things are getting better”. What can we expect from the 2015 exhibition? “The guiding principle is innovation of course, combined with competitiveness which doesn’t mean just the price but should be considered in a

Scalinata to Piazza Gae Aulenti

much broader context: the total cost of product ownership. Visitors at Vitrum can take something important home with them, something cultural too. This is why we decided to start with the origins of the glass industry this year: we will also be presenting a valuable object that we are helping to restore and will use that as a starting point to talk about the development of the industry”. Vitrum has always had an international reach and vocation, and is one of the leading exhibitions in the industry. Just like Italian glass companies, which are among the best in the world. However market rules have changed, especially over recent years. What are the current dictates in the industry? “Something positive has emerged from the major global recession: the price of objects is not the primary concern. The most important thing is the ability to deliver a service, and to do this at a reasonable cost. This is where I think future strategies will be based on: offering a reliable, trustworthy service at the right price. Italian companies are very well positioned in this sense, because they are very versatile and efficient by nature. The only problem for some of these,

16 especially the small and medium-sized ones, is R&D which can be very burdensome when budgets are tight. Yet Italy’s ‘Achille’s heel’ is the lack of synergy more than anything else: in fact, this year Vitrum aims to be home to the Gimav association as well as to everybody in a non-coercive, transparent way. Our doors are open, as this year’s ATIV conference also shows: if we can make the most of these synergies, we will have reached our goal. And we could be really competitive”. So this year’s Vitrum will be all about innovation and synergies too? “Yes, absolutely, but in terms of how we organize ourselves. If we want

to be truly competitive worldwide, we need the scientific and technical contribution of all the players. People coming to the exhibition must find the full range of future glass offerings”. This is your first Vitrum as its president: how do you feel about your “debut”? “I must be honest... I noticed that there has been a great deal of involvement and participation over the years. Some of the ideas for this exhibition come from previous decisions. It’s personally exciting for me but it’s more a matter of team work. It’s the team that makes for success. And what counts more for me is to help this team achieve good results”.

lso at the Gimav event to present Vitrum 2015 to the international press was ATIV (Association of Italian Glass Experts), which will be taking its 30th annual conference to Milan for the first time. The date for the “Advances in Glass Processes: Key innovation topics in hollow and flat glass” meeting is 8 October 2015 when the top 12 innovations for flat and hollow glass selected by the ATIV technical committee will be presented and explained to the audience by their authors or developers. We interviewed ATIV President, engineer Alessandro Bandini. First Parma, then Milan. Why did ATIV choose to take its annual conference to Milan for the first time? “We think this appointment will draw a lot of people also because of the recent ATIV conferences in Parma where attendance by international

Piazza Gae Aulenti, Torre Unicredit scientists and the glass trade has always been good. Last year there were 350 participants from Europe. When Gimav gave us the opportunity to bring the 30th conference to Milan, we agreed immediately because it is timed to take place during Vitrum and Expo which attract not just scientists but also visitors who are interested in what the glass industry has to offer in Italy. It will be an important launch pad: this is also why I suggested holding an ATIV conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, which will be hosting Expo 2017”. What are the key themes of the conference? “The 2015 event is a real event for

us because ATIV came into being 30 years ago. Initially a hollow glass association, 4-5 years ago we focused the same attention on flat glass too because it is considered a very interesting sector for production and secondary glass processing too. Actually, had the venue for this year’s conference been Parma, the main topic would have been innovation in hollow glass forming machinery. Since we will be at Vitrum we have broadened the concept of technological innovation to include flat glass. We received various responses to our call for papers and are now studying these: the 12 best will be presented at Vitrum”. How does ATIV see the future of the glass industry? “Good, always good. We need to aim high: although glass has suffered some setbacks in Italy, this has not been the case globally because it has always done well as an application and also as a research field. Although foreign groups have purchased some shareholdings in Italian companies, our expertise remains: glass processing art and know-how is being transferred. We have the strongest machinery producers in the world, we have the skills. Despite the recent economic downturn, the Italian glass

industry has built a tradition which has taken our human capital around the world to help glass companies develop: glass companies that needed experience and training in this field, for all flat and hollow glass production. This is a great opportunity for the future: we need to work on consolidating synergies among companies in Italy, and among producers and designers of machines and equipment for the glass industry”.

H

eld on 12-13 May, the 2-day event for the international press organized by Vitrum was on target again this year. The journalists, mainly well-known, wellestablished journalists from leading glass magazines around the world, were in Italy to meet Vitrum’s newlyelected helmsmen at their first official appointment and to source -- just like every year – the new Italian-style offerings. And this year’s program of activities was a particularly busy one. First appointment: the 3-hour “Architectural walks in Milan” tour of the buildings in the Garibaldi-Repubblica district where glass is the main feature of the architectural design. The tour was specifically “tailored” to cater to Gimav-Vitrum. The press

was welcomed in the Via Solferino 17 premises of the Milan Board of Architects. The tour leader taking the journalists around the main city streets was Prof. Maria Vittoria Capitanucci, an architecture critic and historian who lectures on the history of contemporary projects at the Polytechnic of Milan. High-rise symbols in Milan “The itinerary – explained Prof. Capitanucci – included the area of Milan that was given a major makeover after being long in need of a spruce up. In the last four/five years this area has finally been given a new lease on life and the results have been completely unexpected. The masterplan for the entire area – which goes by the name

of Porta Nuova-Varesine and Garibaldi-Isola – was completely redesigned by the architect Cesar Pelli, who also signed the district’s iconic building, the Unicredit Tower, now the headquarters of the Unicredit bank. The three-part building complex defines a central square that is surrounded by other interesting buildings designed by a number of Italian and foreign architects”.

The same square now also hosts the Unicredit pavilion, in beechwood and glass: it will house some cultural events for Expo and will then be transferred to a new location. The privileged observatory of Piazza Gae Aulenti also offers a view of the Isola district with its two multiple awardwinning Bosco Verticale (Green Tower) buildings by Stefano Boeri, La Varra and Barreca, while “an intere-

sting suspended walkway – she continued – leads to two residential skyscrapers designed by Arquitectonica: Aria and Solaria. Alongside these is another high-rise apartment building, Solea, by the architect Caputo”. “The final strip of this area behind the buildings is called Varesine and connects – both physically and ideally with Piazza della Repubblica, where Milan’s historical ‘tall’ buildings are concentrated. Here we find the ‘lower’ buildings with their continuous glazing by the US and North European Pedersen Fox architectural practice and the main element, the famous ‘Diamantone’ building also by the same practice”. Glass in the new Milan Over the years, the main city of Lombardy, has concentrated on using glass for its skyscrapers. The city skyline has begun to change, and now the effects of this high-rise architectural strategy can be clearly seen. “Our tour – Prof. Capitanucci continued – touches on the theme of glass in a number of cases: in the skyscrapers, that is in the ‘towers’, and in the residential buildings. Signed by Cesar Pelli, the Unicredit Tower has glass as its main element: the continuous facades make the

building more eco-sustainable. Here, the glass system was specifically designed to obtain the highest heating and air conditioning certification”. The high-rise building language was studied by avant-garde firms and the guests were given a taste of this with the valuable contribution of two leading experts in the field, architect Fabio Baccini and engineer Alfredo Sironi. “Very eye-catching - Maria Vittoria Capitanucci ended – but mainly for

Itineraries of Milanese architecture: a 10-year success story “The project – explained architect Stefano Suriano, editor of the “Itinerari” magazine – originated about 10 years ago from the Board of Architects and the Milan Foundation of the Board of Architects to take a census of the city’s modern architecture (about 500 buildings built from the early 1800’s to the present day). A database was created and included in the www.ordinearchitetti.mi.it website which currently hosts about 50 itineraries divided into themes. There is a description for each building, which is often prepared by leading experts and university professors, a photo gallery, copies of original drawings and a special bibliography for the itinerary”. “The itineraries are open to everybody – continued Suriano – and for people from all walks of life: architects, aficionados, university professors, high school or university students”. From the very beginning they have been very successful, so our expectations are very high for Expo of course. “During Expo’s 6-month run – Suriano pointed out – all the tours have been organized into a new project, ‘Architectural walks in Milan’. These twice-weekly walking tours (and not the traditional bus tours) on Thursday and Saturday, will cover the most interesting itineraries that even people arriving from other countries can see. Each year about 800 people take our tours and considering that there are about 40-45 people in each tour, we expect the number to be even higher over the coming months”.

residential use and as such, less continuous, is the Tower glazing by the Spanish now US-based Arquitectonica practice. Here the double-height glazing creates veritable interior patios for some apartments. Just as

striking and architecturally impactful is the entire ‘Diamantone’ complex with its sequence of long ‘Diamantini’ buildings along the Viale della Liberazione axis. The new contemporary city limits”.

Some Gimav member stands at Mir Stekla 2014 Glass 2015 - explained Gimav Director Renata Gaffo – the figures show that our companies are interested in this appointment and in the Russian market in general”. Although things have improved slightly since the dreadful 2009-2011 period, which also led to the closure of a large number of small glassworks that our companies also worked with, the local economic situation is still not helping. “The fundamental problems of Russia – she reminded – are the major difficulties being encountered by small and medium-sized companies in getting access to credit from ban-

ks and the high interest rates”. The Russian economy therefore continues to suffer from fundamental problems that call for caution: lack of bank capital, no economic growth, the persisting tendency for the government to intervene in the economy. This is why, if something is changing – Gaffo explained - “it is still not significant and one should not forget that we also have the problem of the devaluation of the Ruble and the fall in oil prices”. There is a glimmer of hope on the horizon because from early February to early April 2015, the Ruble increased by 22.3% in value, but experts

27 remain tight lipped about any longterm strengthening of the Ruble. “There are no doubts - Renata Gaffo commented - that Russia will return on the stage and, as a result Mir Stekla will regain momentum, but we cannot deny that even this exhibition has experienced a sharp decrease in exhibition spaces, exhibitors and exhibitor countries over recent years. One example, is the low number of machinery on display: this is because although Italian companies have been taking and showcasing their technology abroad for decades now, the costs of the ‘extra’ exhi-

bition services are working against us. From machinery handling to power supply, as well as customs duties: the expenses are too high and only the larger companies can offset these by having their local sales reps go to the exhibition”. “Let’s not forget – the director ended – that for 7 years, that is until 2008, Russia was one of our main export markets. As always, our sector arrives a little “later” than the others and mainly when economic wellbeing is more widespread among the population: with people building, buying furniture...”.

Machinery and equipment have always been among our top exports along with other products that Italy is noted for: clothing and food. However the preferred choices of import development programs are inevitably those products that are more closely linked to heavy industry such as the energy and transport sectors and military supplies. This means that for Italian companies competition is now more than ever before based on high technology. Russian banks are still unable to provide long-term credit, but companies can rely on Italian banks in the country (currently about 10) that assist companies with all the market entry and presence, and start-up procedures. When it comes to operating in the market, the greatest difficulties experienced by Italian suppliers remain the setting up of efficient service networks and managing flows of spare parts, accessories and components. And given rising national and foreign investments, including those in the Special Economic Zones, demand for machinery and equipment is expected to remain strong in the coming future, especially since Russian industry does not seem able to compete with foreign suppliers, Italian companies included, for most products in the area of machine tools and industrial equipment. and quality that we have always been known for is our response”. For Elettromeccanica Bovone Area Manager Gian Piero Delucca, the Russian market challenge is all about innovation and something that the company cannot fail to take on. “We believe that there will be a growing demand for high-tech, versatile and customized solutions. This is an area where our company – Delucca pointed out – has made specific choices and is steering in a certain direction. Any fall in

The company is optimistic about Mir Stekla 2015, which Elettromeccanica Bovone will be attending with all the documentation about its entire product range. A stand-out new entry on the market is its range of automated systems for glass sheet processing, and multi-axle robots with different loading capacities and applications. “The use of high performance machinery and robots for glass loading/unloading and handling operations – Delucca said – guarantees more efficiency and productivity than traditional processing systems”.

“After the widespread, deep economic crisis – he observed – the Ruble is getting stronger against all odds. Many economists had forecast that the Russian currency crisis would have continued in 2015 as well, but instead there was an inversion in the trend at the beginning of the year. The stronger Ruble and slight pickup in the Russian economy over recent months should get Russian businessmen investing again. In any case, Mir Stekla is the topmost event for Russia and for all the former Soviet Republics: markets where our company has always done very well. We therefore expect this Mir Stekla to be the starting point for a good second half of the year 2015”, Delucca ended.

his edition of Mir Stekla is certainly a special event, notably in light of the difficult times the country is going through”. Matteo Padovan, General Manager of OOO Fenzi and OOO Alu-Pro reflects on the consequences for the world of flat glass (and every other industrial and social sector) of this economic situation that is discouraging investments and dampening growth plans. “One thing almost all the industry professionals noticed - continues Padovan - is an intensified demand for lowcost products, with questionable levels of reliability and safety. Over the last six months, in the world of IG units, and especially in the area of sealants and spacers, we have seen the spread of products that everyone recognizes as not qualitatively at the height of the

And, contrary to what several players in the market will be doing, the newer trend is specifically to not offer low-quality product lines”. Glass Alliance strategies Glass Alliance has always considered the Russian market to be a strategic one and continues to do so. “With two production facilities in Russia - explains Matteo Padovan - we are very close to the market; we are able to understand and react effectively to the ever-changing market needs. Working to our advantage are the know-how and international experience of a group whose operations span 5 continents and include 10 manufacturing facilities. This makes us very agile in responding to the many challenges the industry faces”. Prepared to support the market with excellent products, without ever diminishing quality, Glass Alliance boasts a product range that no other player in the Russian area can match. The two plants in Lipetsk are equipped with the most state-of-the-art technologies for the production of sealants and spacers for high-quality IG units. “Today - Padovan reminds us - many market segments are only looking for low-cost products, which also means accepting a reduction in quality. Glass Alliance is responding to this situation with very competitive products that maintain an extremely high technological content without making any compromises whatsoever. This is our philosophy. We are prepared to support the manufacturers of IG units and windows through more competitive pricing but without contributing to a lowering of the standards in terms of the quality of our sealants and spacers”.

“It is becoming more and more difficult - comments the General Manager of OOO Fenzi and OOO Alu-Pro - to make reliable forecasts. We have seen a growing interest in architectural projects that require high-performing IG units and windows. Our solutions aimed at energy savings are very attractive because they have been successfully employed for many years in North European markets and our research has continued non-stop”. “The use of low-e glass in the Russian market has been gradually expanding - continues Padovan there is a keen desire to work with innovative products, but at the same time most of the businesses must deal with the realities of a turbulent financial and economic situation, opting for less complex solutions. In this sense, Glass Alliance aims to present itself as the partner of choice for Russia, at all levels, both during the current tough times and in the mid- to long-term future, which certainly inspires hope for development and growth”.

with quality levels inferior to those currently in its portfolio. “In terms of both spacers and sealants - points out the manager - at the Lipetsk production facilities there is ongoing optimization of the industrial processes and improvement of quality controls. The use of excellent quality raw materials, both in terms of performance and environmental impact is, and continues to be, a must for our business”. For the Fenzi Group, the experience at Mir Stekla is always very positive and not just with regard to acquiring new contacts with manufacturers and distributors. “At every event, our stand has always been the hub for pivotal meetings with all of our partners, with whom we define or adjust our strategies for the new season. In addition, I am pleased to report that, thanks to the fact we have

two facilities in Lipetsk for the production of Fenzi sealants and Alu-Pro spacers for IG units, the demand for our brand gets stronger every year. And this contributes to expanding our network and strengthening our foothold in the market. “Our expectation, therefore, is to continue along this pathway, confident that even in difficult times like these it is possible to do business and leverage opportunities, concludes Matteo Padovan.

Cinzia Schiatti comments on the 2015 edition of the international trade show in Moscow, emphasizing that “in this context, the market demands high-performance machines that can meet specific needs. Our experience has provided us the skills to customize our products as much as possible to satisfy the customer’s needs, without penalizing the excellent price/quality ratio that we are known for”. And, looking to the near future, the businesswoman points out: “With regard to products earmarked for the Russian market, for the moment, it appears that the trend is

tied to the home furnishings and luxury sectors that seem to be holding strong. We hope to see developments in Russian production that involves the glass sector”. Schiatti Angelo’s flagship machine is also its latest innovation, launched by the company at Glasstec 2014: the RS812 corner/radius grinding machine. The machine was designed and built to perform raw, radius and variable angle corner rounding, even of different dimensions, on each corner of the glass. The machine runs in fully automatic mode and does not require any adjustments or intervention by the operator. It can operate as a stand-alone unit or be combined with grinding/drilling lines.

ussia is going through a year of transition, due to both macroeconomic and political reasons. At Mir Stekla, we expect there to be a flood of Russian customers interested in investments over the mid to long range but also a limited number of players who will want to buy on the spot. The situation in the Caucasus is quite different, with its historic, linguistic and privileged customs ties to Russia. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are, in fact, enjoying a period of great momentum and economic growth -- driven in part by government programs to stimulate investments. Live from the Federazione is Andrea Rabino, spokesperson for Bottero, to outline the trends in an area with many intricacies of interpretation but, as already demonstrated in the past, one

with enormous potential, especially for Italian businesses. “Attesting to what we experienced at the Turkish GlassExpo 2015 show in March, at Mir Stekla we expect to see a huge turnout of visitors from the Caucasus region. Worth mentioning here is the decision by the Turkmen government to invest heavily in the both the flat and hollow glass production sectors”. So, what are the current trends? “The market - explains the manager - is especially competitive right now, with demand for high-performance products and lower prices. This makes it essential to be represented across all market segments, from entry-level to high-end, offering both standard products and highly-automated, integra-

ted lines”. A prime example of this is the Bottero initiative to launch a plant for production of refrigerator and oven glass in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. AKFA – the client – part of the Artel Group (a holding company with 50 businesses and 6,000 employees) placed an order with the Cuneobased company for a fully-integrated plant for the following glass-processing operations: warehousing, cutting, grinding, drilling, tempering and tinting. “This makes it clear - emphasizes Rabino - how, in the world of flat glass, processing machines are the ones that offer the greatest added value. To be a market leader you need to offer dedicated, customized solutions with a high degree of automation and integration for various sectors; at this point in time, that includes automotive, home applications and shower enclosures. While IG units and solar seem to be less in demand than in the past…”. And, to address these new challenges, the Bottero group is gearing up with increasingly innovative products and internal processes designed to promote lean management, with the aim of introducing, in the next few years, new, more cutting-edge and competitive market solutions.

espite news on the fluctuations of Italian exports to Russia, market demand from this area remains high for the leading Italian luxury brands, and for high-end

products in general. Italian brands therefore need to learn what the real needs are and how to be more effective in order to gain a foothold in an area that continues to be strategic.

Two leading names on the Italian glass scene comment on the prowess of Italian tableware around the world

Aerial view of Vetrerie Riunite The situation was analyzed by comparing the experience of two companies working in the glass industry: Vetreria di Borgonovo from Milan and Vetrerie Riunite from Verona. The burden of the political situation “The Russian market – explained Luca Repetti, marketing manager at Vetreria di Borgonovo – was quite important for us until recently, but lately there has been a significant downturn for a number of reasons. First, the rising number of local producers or multinational companies that have set up their plants there. The situation has also become more difficult in terms of customs policies

and taxes, as has the political situation with the temporary embargo because of the Ukraine crisis”. “We are on the Russian market – said Antonio Mandruzzato, the tableware business unit manager at Vetrerie Riunite – with two product lines: washing machine door glass and tableware: until 2013 these two markets were very important. However, since last year political and economic factors have been heavily impacting company revenues. Until the situation stabilizes, it will remain a marginal market for us”. Export strategies “We count on staying in the Russian market – Repetti added – and step-

ping up our market presence as soon as the conditions become favorable. At the same time, we count on increasing our B2B”. “In our case – Mandruzzato pointed out – we need to distinguish between industrial products, washing machine door glass, with the main European markets being those where the leading manufacturers of home appliances have their plants, and tableware. In the second case, the main European markets are the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy”. The domestic situation Given the drawn-out recession –

Repetti continued – this is a complex time. A turnaround could be possible if consumer spending changes, but this can only happen if the spending power increases”. Mandruzzato made a distinction: “Industrial hollow glass is doing well, despite the price tensions, whereas in the homeware sector it is being hard hit mainly by the falling prices of large-scale producers which are lowering the product’s value and creating the perception that it is more of a commodity than a functional product with a value”.

All functions of the machine are controlled from a remote control cabinet, using touch screen technology for optimal user-friendly conditions. The last machine delivered to a big Asian glass factory has been installed recently. The range of OCMI machines dedi-

cated to gob forming for glass tableware items is completed by pressing machines with hydraulic or pneumatic pressing mechanisms for single or double gob operation. These machines have been delivered also for the processing of technical glass for the manufacturing of glass bricks and glass insulators. OCMI complete its range of equipments for tableware with the most appreciated stemware sealing ma-

chine, available with 42, 48 or 60 stations. This machine processes glass bowls and stems with dedicated burners for heating, sealing and stretching, if needed, in order to get best quality drinkware articles. Asia, and not China only, is expected to present several interesting opportunites in the field of stemware machines since many glass factories started to focus on quality more than quantity.

recent study coordinated by Professor Tullio Scopigno of the Sapienza Physics Department, in collaboration with the J.R. Viejo group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the group of Professor Cerullo of the Polytechnic University of Milan, has made a decisive breakthrough in the verification of glass transition theories.

Experimental results As Scopigno explains, “We’ve succeeded in accurately determining relaxation times as long as thousands of years, so long that these results are unobtainable with any other technique, demonstrating that there is no structural arrest at temperatures well below the glass transition point. In other words, contrary to the predic-

tions of accredited glassy-state models, there is no viscosity divergence. The experiment leads us to exclude the existence of a characteristic temperature at which glass stops flowing, thereby invalidating glass transition theories based precisely on the divergence of the so-called structural relaxation time. Fields of application The material studied originates as a pharmacological molecule which, in the glassy state, exhibits higher solubility and more efficient assimilation by

the body than its crystalline counterpart. But the materials currently used in the amorphous state encompass all fields of application, from PVC windows to optical fibers. Just consider that most polymeric materials solidify in amorphous form. Thus it is essential to have a complete understanding of the glassy state, and the evidence collected with this study finally allows us to test modern interpretations of the glass transition on an experimental level. “In terms of applications, continues Eva Pogna, graduate student of the Polytechnic

University of Milan Physics Department and first author of the recently published article in the ‘Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences’ journal, “we’ve established that it’s possible to vary the mechanical properties of a glass with its age. But the most important result of the study is the possibility to measure the viscosity properties of glass with the changing temperature, starting with the elastic property as a function of the glass’s age. Determining the viscosity of the material is fundamental in the preparation of glass, as the processing is based on the knowledge of some important points on the viscosity-temperature curve.” The importance of determining glass viscosity “During the cooling phase glass reaches the melting point, processing point, softening point, annealing point and tensioning point. The last ones play a particularly fundamental role in the release of residual stress and, being below the glass transition temperature, correspond to very high viscosity values. Using our method to successfully measure the viscosity curve in this region may enable better accuracy in produc-

tion and thermal treatment processes. When an optical fiber is produced, for example, its glass components are initially at equilibrium at a high temperature; when the fiber is cooled these components contract differently depending on their coefficient of thermal expansion. This compression inhomogeneity induces elastic stress in the fiber, which negatively affects the index of refraction profile by causing double refraction, i.e., distorting the propagation of the light. The double refraction, however, also depends on the mechanical stress accumulated due to the different viscosity of the components. The temperature and pressure conditions at which the fiber must be designed are therefore fundamental for determining ideal preparation conditions.”
