Taking facts around the world by

The Italian glass industry? It doesn’t talk a lot, because it prefers results over words. Yet, with GlassBuild America and Vitrum 2015 just around the corner, the success of Italian technology speaks for itself

Chiara Marseglia

T

he 19th Vitrum is just around the corner. However, before dedicating ourselves entirely to Italy’s appointment with the glass industry, this year we wanted to first stop off at Atlanta, Georgia, to support Italian flat and hollow glass processing companies at GlassBuild America 2015. This year, we will be taking with us to both exhibitions the renewed optimism and strong desire for recovery of an important, yet elegantly silent part of Italian industry. Everyone has great expectations for this year, with everyone doing their best. Here’s what we aim to do: strengthen and promote this niche of Italian proactiveness which holds a leading position worldwide but which, outside its sphere, still doesn’t make it into the news. Why? Because the Italian glass industry is made of companies and people that prefer facts to words. And the positive figures for the industry, which have just been published by Gimav and which we will be looking at in our next issue, bear this out. A natural material that can practically be recycled an infinite number of times, with an extraordinary potential, Italy has a real passion for glass: artistic, historical but technological too. However, it is also – and most importantly – because of the work, farsightedness and commitment to innovation of our companies that it continues to be pivotal in many, often unexpected aspects of our daily lives.

Vitrum Gourmet Festival 2011

The hugely successful 15th exhibition came before the onset of a downward spiral that was to impact the glass industry – with a delayed effect – two years later. Now there’s something new in the air: companies have reacted

In the middle, Renata Gaffo

F

rom an “explosive” 2007 to a 2015 with “important signs of a recovery. In between, a major recession during which “all the figures dropped”, but the small and medium size of most of the companies in the industry gave proof of their flexibility to tackle the repercussions of the recession and meet new market needs more quickly”. This is how Gimav and Vitrum director Renata Gaffo, reported on the recent, intense history of glass processing machinery and the international exhibition of Vitrum, created and promoted by the trade association, with its 19th session slated for 6-9 October at the Fiera Milano exhibition venue in Rho. “The year 2007 was truly exceptional for

9 all sectors of the industrial machinery segment and after all these years the factors contributing to the skyrocketing increase remain unexplained. A number of related events and a certain amount of coincidences are certainly thought to be among these”, adds Renata Gaffo. In 2008, the effects of the boom year were still being felt and it was not until the end of the year that the glass industry began to feel the creaking of a meltdown that had already exploded elsewhere. The most difficult 2-year period The 2009-2010 period was a very difficult one. “However, Gimav members – the director pointed out – were able to

10 Vitrum 2007 face these with the ductility that is a feature of small- and medium-sized, familyrun businesses. Not to be overlooked also is the fact that the sector exports about 80% of its production throughout the world”. A well-established export capacity and customer service did the rest in dampening the effects of a slowdown in orders. During this time, margins were eroded of course - Renata Gaffo explained - “partly because of tougher competition, and partly of the higher costs of selling: before, sales revenues came from 20 markets, but later we have had to expand our sphere of action, by travelling more, making more

contacts, encountering more difficulties with resulting higher costs”. Reaction of Italian and foreign brands Vitrum has mirrored the market trend and the ability of companies to react, to the extent that “in 2009 the exhibition space was downsized, but this did not apply to exhibitor attendance”. Vitrum maintained the same drive. “Leading Italian and foreign brands for example continued to choose our exhibition to showcase their new products”, Gaffo pointed out. Vitrum did its share to remain an attention-grabbing event, “by not in-

11 The Alfa Romeo exhibit, Vitrum 2013 creasing exhibitor participation fees and organizing activities and promotions to attract trade people from overseas and communicating effectively”. In 2013, Vitrum reported the same figures as the two previous sessions, almost in preparation for the new upbeat atmosphere that can already be perceived this year. Enhancing a Made in Italy heritage with a universal appeal The side events were among the highlights of many exhibitions in the past, if they can be considered to be side events, because of their quality, appeal

and ability to surprise. “This same goal lies behind everything we do – Gaffo pointed out – and this adds value to products that are Made in Italy but which, because of their value and uniqueness, can be considered universal and a world heritage. As a result the focus will be on various aspects of culture, art, design, food and wine (how could we forget the “7 Michelin stars” of the Vitrum Gourmet Festival in 2011). This year’s new mix of offerings will project visitors into the ancient history of glass and at the same time into the possible uses, some of which still unexplored, of this magic material.

“W

e’re very positive, there will be lots of people with this year’s Vitrum accompanying a recovery after the recession years”. This is how Renata Gaffo, director of Vitrum, commented on the 2015 exhibition

“Brilliant ideas” and products with a high-level design are expected. And two unique pieces from history: a bottle dating back to Roman times and restored with the help of Vitrum, and a splendid glass stove from the 40s which has never lost sight of its original goal and guiding philosophy since its inception way back in 1979: “To be at the service of glass companies, pro-

15

mote participation, and guarantee success for exhibitors”. Two added values will accompany the trade show. The first is the exhibition of a project by students from the Polytechnic University of Milan working in team with the University of Freiburg. Projects showing future applications of glass and design ideas that Renata Gaffo does not hesitate to call “brilliant” and “very high-level”. Vitrum will be showcasing ideas and projects from students during a lively workshop held at the Polytechnic in May as part of an initiative aimed at “bringing young people and bright minds closer to the glass

industry so that companies can intercept the new ideas and develop products for market launch”. Another “extra” at Vitrum 2015 will be the exhibition of the potential that glass has expressed throughout its history, with at least two unique pieces: a marvelous bottle dating back to Roman times -- exhibited only once in the 1960’s -which Vitrum helped to restore, and a splendid glass stove from the 1940’s. This celebrates the frontiers of glass in many projects signed by award-winning contemporary architects from Italy and other countries: an event with an impressive lineup of surprises.

nother partnership that looks at the future of glass, to get industry and universities to communicate – once again – by opening the doors to young people and providing them with the necessary tools to make space for creativity applied to technology and to product innovation. This, in brief, is the intent of a cooperation project that was launched by Vitrum by organizing a special workshop that placed the Polytechnic University of Milan and the University of Fribourg directly in contact with each other. The two universities are working closely together on a project involving about 50 students from the TeDH (Technology and Design for Healthcare) research group at the Polytechnic of

The first phase involved creating and developing the product concept at the Polytechnic of Milan in May; the second phase involving the technological development and application and preparation of the prototypes is now

underway at the University of Fribourg and will be completed in September. Vitrum 2015 at Fiera Milano Rho on 6 - 9 October will present the concepts and working product prototypes that have been designed and developed by the students themselves with the support of some leading glass companies. “Glass - commented Giuseppe Andreoni, Associate Professor at the Polytechnic of Milan School of Design who coordinates the TeDH research group at the department of Design – is a noble material that we now have the opportunity to revisit through this indus-

try-university cooperation. There is still too little exchange between these two entities, but this is an opportunity for them to share and exploit their finest creative, design and manufacturing skills”. However, this very initiative also puts future designers into direct contact with a highly technical and specialized sector: glass processing can offer many job opportunities in Italy and in other countries. And for an ever-growing sector with a strong export drive like this one, it is fundamental to be

20

able to have qualified people who can contribute to its competitiveness on international markets through product innovation. Giving a historical-cultural vision of the sector and driving ideas is one of the macro-goals of Vitrum 2015, which aims to define the state-of-theart in the industry by offering food for thought on what the possible developments can be and stimulating industry into assessing the “Total Cost of Ownership” of a product and not just its purchase price. “The initiative launched with the Polytechnic of Milan and the University of Fribourg – explained Vitrum President Dino Zandonella Necca – is fundamental: the melting pot of student working groups offers many pre-industrialized creative ideas that can be picked up again and developed by trade people. We are proud to offer this added value to our visitors”.

ith “Glass. The Great Unexpected”, once again Vitrum proves how it is possible to deftly balance history and tradition with high technology and the innovative abilities of Italy and the world. Between past and future, ancient and modern, glass is ultimately the star player in a themed exhibit designed to offer a vast panorama of the use of glass in outstanding products. The event was conceived by Vitrum in partnership with ICE, the agency for overseas promotion and internationalization of Italian businesses. The exhibit unfolds through three primary themed sections: glass in history and design, glass as a key player in architecture, and glass and the new technologies.

The trade show specialized in machinery, equipment and special glass processing products will host a major show featuring the past, present and future of a material that has influenced the history of humanity

An essential, initial reference point within the history and design section is a piece of great historical importance: an amphora depicting a gladiator scene dating back to the second century A.D. and exhibited only once before in Milan, in 1964. Visitors to Vitrum will also have the opportunity to admire an extremely rare exemplar of a glass radiator dated 1941 and, along with it, one of the most famous chairs in the recent history of design: the acclaimed Ghost chair by Cini Boeri, in the unique 2007 edition in silvered glass (mirror) produced by Fiam. A vast section dedicated to glass in architecture is subdivided into two major themed areas: “Design research - Technological and experimental research, to highlight the complexities of the use of glass in architecture. Of the many projects on display are, to mention just a few: the Shard of Glass

by Renzo Piano, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia in Tbilisi by De Lucchi, and the Nardini Research Center and Auditorium by Fuksas, in a journey that moves from the theories of light and color in the urban landscape, passes through studies of the control of light and shadow, and moves on to the renovation of existing sites with contributions by Mario Bellini and Norman Foster. Technological research will shine the spotlight on the most interesting representations of residential comfort that, precisely as a function of the use of glass, have achieved results unheard of until just a few years ago. Included in the strictly experimental section are the most recent studies in chemistry applied to glass with the presentation of the most cutting-edge research in the area of photovoltaic glass, chromogenic glass, OLED glass and solar mirrors.

Exports are going well for the glass industry too, which has posted a 3.2% increase. More than 70 buyers and journalists from more than 20 countries expected at Vitrum thanks to an ICE – Gimav team effort. Overview of the industry in an interview with Alessandro Liberatori who heads the ICE Mechanical, Chemical, Energy and Environmental Office How would you describe the Italian mechanical industry today? “One of the driving sectors of Italianmade products, with a € 45 billion trade

surplus in 2013 and an initial estimate of € 47 billion for 2014, is the Italian machinery industry which ranks third worldwide in the international trade balance

one of the best-performing excellencies of Italian production.”

Alessandro Liberatori ranking. This is equal to an increase in exports by the industry of more than 3%. Not only is Italian machinery one of the backbones of Italian production, it is also a precious asset that needs to be supported and enhanced. For the sector of machinery, accessories and special products for glass processing, exports rose by 3.4%, amounting to more than € 930 million with a stable surplus of more than € 836 million. The glass processing machinery industry, with an increase in sales of about 3% and a strong export drive – accounting for approx. 80% of sales – and a trade surplus of more than € 830 million, contributes significantly to the Italian trade balance, and is thus

What about the current trends? “Italy is the second most competitive machinery manufacturer in the world. The Italian mechanical industry occupies one of the highest positions worldwide. In the UNCTAD/WTO ranking it comes second after Germany. Italian companies are Germany’s main competitors. Italy has about 180 mechanical products that have a higher trade surplus than Germany which is considered the benchmark”. What are the main export destinations for mechanical products and for glass processing machinery in particular? “For machinery, we are definitely extremely well placed in Europe, the United States and China where our exports are still growing. If machinery exports to the United States alone are considered, these increased by more than 15% in 2014, also because of the favorable Euro/US$ exchange rate, and with further margins for growth in our US market share deriving from the spinoffs of the expected TTIP agreement. For glass processing machinery, the main markets are Europe as well as the United States, China, Turkey and Brazil. In the

Russian Federation, where Italian machines along with other typically Italian agrifood and consumer products are highly regarded by the Russian public, things are different. The complex geopolitical situation at present and economic sanctions by the EU are clearly having negative effects on our exports. However, we must continue to be present on the market by attending industry exhibitions such as Mir Stekla for example, where, in team with Gimav, we organized a group participation of 14 Italian companies again this year”. What does ICE do to support the glass processing machinery industry? “ICE has always worked with the Gimav Association to plan and develop activities that are designed to promote and support glass companies on overseas

markets. Staging technical seminars abroad, organizing visits by overseas buyers and group participation at the main industry exhibitions in other countries are what we mainly do. In 2015 we organized group participations at Glasspex in India, China Glass in Beijing, Mir Stekla in Russia, and in September we will be with Gimav at Glassbuild America in Atlanta and also expect to be at Glasstech Asia in November, which is taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia. And for Vitrum, we are organizing an incoming visit of more than 50 selected buyers and 20 journalists from the foreign trade press from 20 countries. It’s definitely necessary to work as a system and strengthen our cooperation with the various trade associations in this sector such as Gimav, Assovetro and Ativ of course. The activities planned during Vitrum go in this very direction”.

cially for Fiera Milano, which is its international exhibition arena par excellence”, remarks Corrado Peraboni, CEO of Fiera Milano. “Vitrum, the leading show in glass processing machinery, is this industry’s crown jewel and we are proud to host it. This year - he reminds us - it runs concurrent with EMO, the global trade show for machine tools. This trade show specialization in machine tools that we bring to the market, thanks also to Vitrum, is a real feather in our cap. Machine building might be less glamorous than other industries, like fashion or food, where we are also top players. But its economic impact - he emphasizes - can in no way be underestimated”. The Expo effect Slated to take place October 6th to 9th, Vitrum is a major showcase that will coincide with the final month of Expo 2015, in which Fiera Milano played an active role in promotion and development, as well. “Through its Nolostand and Fiera Milano Congressi subsidiaries - explains Peraboni - we were awarded the job of setting up/staging and managing the activities at the Congress Center and Auditorium during Expo 2015. We also rented to Expo (through Novem-

ber 10th), approximately 120,000 sq. m inside the exhibition district for materials logistics and truck parking. In addition, we designed the nine collective pavilions for the Universal Expo (the Clusters), Pavilion Zero and the Expocenter and planned the interior staging of the themed areas (Pavilion Zero, Future Food District, Children’s Park, Biodiversity Park) and the Italian Pavilion”.

The world of professional trade shows “The Universal Expo - continues Peraboni - has vigorously powered up the image of Italy, and Milan in particular, around the world, catalyzing attention and rewarding us with amazing visibility. And Fiera Milano is also a beneficiary. But, it is hard to say if there has been a significant boosting effect on visitors to the shows. In fact, these are professional trade shows that have a well-defined public of their own that is interested in the exhibits, notwithstanding other parallel events. There

is, however, one show that for obvious reasons of merchandise affinity has probably gained a special advantage from Expo: TuttoFood, which had a truly exceptional show and is now placed at the top among the leading professional food shows in Europe. We knew - concludes Peraboni - that 2015 would be a good business year, thanks to a show calendar packed with key events. Results for the first half substantiate the expectations. Many shows recorded more than satisfactory results and among these is, you guessed it: TuttoFood.

ommunication is fundamental. And even more so “when our market is the world, where the competition is global and strategy calls for emphasizing the outstanding qualities of a signature Italian sector”. This is how, almost on tiptoe, Laura Biason, deputy director of Gimav, opens the conversa-

tion about communicating about glass processing machines, special products and accessories. “We are lucky - she notes - because when the industry businesses communicate, they do it very well, demonstrating their mastery of an international multi-cultural language”. One of the principles of communication is to know how to effectively reach your listener, through the use of words, images and facts that really manage to say something to the targeted stakeholder. Information and machinery Among the assets of a communication that narrates the difference in Italianmade products, Biason can name at least two: “First of all - she states - it is important to always convey the quality, flexibility and ability to customize prod-

ucts, namely the distinctive features that we are known for. Another essential element to point out is the real cost of an Italian machine, that cannot simply be calculated as the acquisition cost, but as a series of values inherent to it, from the durability of its construction to the level of performance, maintenance requirements and the cost of spare parts”. These are all aspects that “must be presented because they can make the difference, which is why they should not be taken for granted”, she adds. Above all, she specifies, because they add value to information that in the glass processing industry is by nature truthful, because it is conveyed in technical language. “The characteristics of the systems are based on universal parameters that must be adhered to”, states the deputy director.

Web opportunities Not only is their DNA international but the companies in the glass industry are also that way because they are capable of leveraging the opportunities offered by the internet and social media, “as a complement to the other means”, observes Biason, convinced that one option does not cancel out the other but rather, they are complementary or they should be chosen based on the objective.

34

Vitrum “social” Vitrum is an example of this “expertise” in communications, which for years has “sold itself” very well. For the 2015 edition, Face-

book and Twitter not only have taken over the countdown, but “disseminate the latest news flashes and special events organized for the show, along with the news items that can make a visit to Milan this year even more interesting and stimulating”. The social media did not pass up the opportunity to note and emphasize, for example, that the New York Times named Milan as the first of 52 destinations to see in 2015. But the internet and social media are also useful for spreading service messages; for more than a year Vitrum has been reminding potential visitors to book early, so they can also visit the Expo without having to pay the price of sold-out accommodations.

Moreover, glass is at the center of a prominent Italian industry, the glass container industry, which represents 1.4 billion euros of the GDP, employs more than 20,000 people and invests an average of about 90 million euros per year, mainly in environmentrelated projects (source: Studio E&Y 2014). This is also why Assovetro, the Italian National Glass Association and member of Confindustria, together with Feve, the European Container Glass Federation, designed and created an ad-hoc special area, the “Piazzetta Vetro”, in which to share the history, culture and peculiarities of this extraordinary material through some sector leaders and their products. From structure to containers Taste, food safety, environment, health and design: the “Piazzetta Vetro” expresses all these key principles of the Expo 2015 slogan, with an emphasis on virtuous relationships between food and glass, in a multimedia area inside the “CibusèItalia” Pavilion of Federalimentare. The area’s scenic design is all glass, of course, and the structure is strict-

ly zero environmental impact. SaintGobain Glass created the suggestive flooring of the Piazzetta with SGG Stadip Protect triple-layer laminated safety glass. The special covering of the CibusèItalia patio is made of glass, again provided by Saint-Gobain, purposely designed for safety and UV protection using tempered glass and SGG Stadip Protect Planidur laminated safety glass.

Journey through the world of transparency The enigma at the entrance gets right to the point: “What is glass?”. More than 17 companies and two associations help visitors solve the riddle, with seven showcases displaying the best vases, bottles, glasses, stem glasses and tableware in production. In an impressive and comprehensive manner, a film loop describes all the outstanding qualities of glass: taste, food safety, sustainability, health, design, recyclability. Up until reaching the end of the “journey” with the conclusion

“Glass is better”, while two screens project the most important data and figures of the glass container industry and results of a study conducted in Europe on 8,100 consumers, including about 1,000 Italians. This study revealed, among other things, that glass is considered by 87% of Europeans to be the best packaging choice for foods and beverages due to its safety and hygienic qualities. creator of the ‘Piazzetta Vetro’ project, explained at the initiative’s launch, “Our presence at Expo 2015 emphasizes, on the one hand, the excellence of a sector that helps to enhance Italian food worldwide and, on the other, the close relationship that exists between containers and food safety. Food safety is a factor that even Italians are mindful of, so much so that about 80% of parents prefer food

preserved in glass for their children, since it eases their health concerns knowing that glass preserves all the organoleptic properties of the food. And our area at the Expo is precisely where we illustrate all the remarkable qualities of glass.” The ‘Piazzetta Vetro’ is located inside Pavilion N10 CibusèItalia of Federalimentare, East entrance, not far from Lake Arena and Pavilion Italy.

Whether it’s to preserve the purity of a fine wine or ensure the safety and integrity of a car windshield, glass is universally recognized as a unique material with superior properties. This is why Atlas Copco is serving glass companies worldwide

A

tlas Copco understands that safeguarding the value of a brand requires quality air solutions. They know what it takes to supply pure and dry air to ensure that the final products deliver the highest standards of quality, purity and safety. Atlas Copco has the products, service

offering and commitment to innovation to answer the industry’s production demands - now and in the future. Meeting customers’ business needs is first in their mind when Atlas Copco designs and builds compressors. “Customer feedback, service and performance data, environmental influences

and the direction of the glass industry - we look at every detail,” explains the company with Italian headquarters in Cinisello Balsamo (Milan). “Because we’re serious about being ‘Committed to Sustainable Productivity’ – the productivity of our customers.” Glass containers are known to be the purest and safest way to package food and beverages, because they preserve the taste, smell and texture. But when compressed air is blown into parisons to form a glass bottle or jar, only certified oil-free compressed air from a Class 0 compressor is certain to prevent contamination of the final products. The Atlas Copco oil-free air compressors have been tested by TÜV authorities and certified Class 0 for oil content in the compressed air produced, according to ISO 8573-1 (2010). The results were clear: even in a fairly polluted en-

vironment, at high ambient temperatures and various pressures, the Atlas Copco Class 0 compressors deliver air without any traces of oil, giving customers the assurance that the compressed air will not contaminate their products. Class 0 air is the best choice for product safety and purity. Whether the compressed air is used to form glass, transport raw materials, as instrument air or plant air, it accounts for a large portion of the energy bill. In fact, more than half of a compressor’s total life cycle cost is spent on energy consumption. “In line with our commitment to ‘Sustainable Productivity’,” explains Atlas Copco, “our compressors offer industry leading energy efficiency. We continuously optimize every aspect of our compressors to further reduce their energy consumption. In addition,

he 26th China Glass, the topmost event for the glass industry in Asia, ended on 23 May. The 3-day event showed an opposite trend and this inevitably raised some questions as to how the Chinese market is performing. “It was our first time as exhibitors - explained Roberta Cometti from the International Dept. at RCN Engineering, a Milan-based company participating in China Glass – also because we are now Gimav members. We have visited the exhibition several times in the past, both in Shanghai and in Beijing, and each time the huge number of people visiting surprised us, with crowded aisles and queues to visit the stands. This year however, the number of visitors fell drastically in an almost unexplainable way”.

RCN Engineering exhibits at China Glass for the first time. According to Roberta Cometti the impacts of the recession could be seen at the Chinese exhibition too but with new opportunities to examine Local implications “RCN – Cometti went on – is not present on the Chinese market yet, even though it does work with some local companies there. In China the concept

Laminating kiln, bag system, four shelves of quality differs from Europe, where companies are required to comply with quality standards. The market is based on a low price policy and fundamentally does not place any particular emphasis on quality. However some Chinese companies are starting to broaden their perspectives and know where to go if they want to buy quality,

52 RCN Engineering stand at China Glass 2015 Global outlook More than 70% of RCN revenue comes from exports, because of its good positioning in Russia, some countries of the former Soviet Union, and part of Eastern Europe as a result of local working ties. Exports to the U.S. and Oceania are also growing. “The situation is pretty much the same in Europe – Cometti continued – but the business is slower”. Together is better What do you expect from the next

exhibition in China? “We were happy with the organization and service – Cometti ended – because we were given attention and help. However, considering the low attendance figures, in the future we might consider having a space where local exhibitors are also present. Italy needs to maintain its high, important level of visibility but sometimes market needs call for a more dynamic, hands-on presence instead of a static, symbolic one”.

dging has always been the core business for Adelio Lattuada which, in nearly 40 years in business has managed to take its experience to the highest levels in this type of processing, offering what currently is the largest range of edging machines on the market. Indeed, it is called a “fleet” of machines, comprising more than 30 models of electronic (or PC equipped) straight-line edgers for flat edge with arris and variable angle with 5 to 16 wheels; more than 10 models of electronic (or PC equipped) straight-line bevellers with 7 to 14 wheels; and a complete line of double-edgers with 8 to 12 wheels per side for flat edge with arris. Completing the range are 4 models of automated

Its commitment to automation has been a real mission for the company machines for radius and straight corner processing, as well as more than 15 models of vertical washing machines. “Automation - explains Nicola Lattuada, sales manager for the family business - is a topic on everyone’s mind – it answers the need to offer high-quality production while maintaining flexibility, increasing productivity and cutting costs”. Which is why Lattuada machines can be integrated with robots that can be installed between two or more edgers; “loop” systems that can be installed on

individual machines (the easiest and most flexible solution – the system can load the glass and move it from the outfeed arm to the infeed arm, rotating it 90° - it is also available with automatic load/unload handling from harp racks); and a glass rotation device for complete edging lines; complete vertical lines of harp racks, edging, washing, drilling and milling. Robots and loop systems call for more highly-automated machines, which is why Lattuada has added some features to its list of optionals, including: automatic compensation for polishing wheel wear; automatic pressure and speed ad-

justment based on glass thickness settings; PC management of work phases; remote diagnostics and on-line support; the ability to remotely control both the panel and the PLC from a PC or tablet. “For both the horizontal and vertical machines - continues Lattuada - projects were developed and created that initially grew out of specific requests from customers that were then transformed into optionals on the product list”. The machine that most boldly expresses the principle of “automation” for the world of glass? “Of course - he concludes - the horizontal machines, the double-edgers, because historically they offer the greatest possibility in the area of automation. Following the rising market trend toward vertical machines, we have developed many ideas and projects for automation solutions, even complex ones, to be integrated on vertical machines. We believe these solutions can be very attractive in the present and for future development of the market”.

Bavelloni brand is back, because the glass industry needs reliability

D

ouble edging systems have always been a key player in the range of products offered by Bavelloni, a brand which is once again directly and undeniably active on the market. As Marketing Director Roberto Califano explains, “Over the last few years, we’ve seen a trend in the glass market to search for solutions that ensure greater flexibility: mixed configurations with peripheral tools and cup wheels, quick format change, wide-ranging productivity and minimum manual intervention. This tendency has a high impact when

choosing a double edger, where many variables must be taken into consideration: maximum dimensions of the piece being processed (small pieces, half sheets, jumbo pieces), different edging contours (flat with fillets, beveled, filleted, curved, polished), production capacity (processing speed and format change speed), specific characteristics of the glass being processed, the need to remove corners, edge-coating removal of low-emissivity glass, etching on the edge, layout (L, U, Z - shaped or reverse configuration).”

“Our customers,” continues Califano, “are intrigued with the possibility to fillet and grind round and flat edges using the same machine, thereby optimizing their use of space and resources in the factory while maintaining productivity and even increasing flexibility.” Automatic user-friendly systems Without a doubt, automation is the factor that led to the advancement of glass grinding machines, particularly the HE500 series of double edgers, up to the development of completely automatic user-friendly systems enabling a wide variety of possibilities. “The entire line can be controlled from a single control station that the customer can posi-

tion however he likes,” emphasizes the Marketing director. “With a specially developed application, the view of the panel can be sent via wi-fi to a tablet in order to be able to supervise the machine at all times and change the operating parameters, even when the operator isn’t standing in front of the control panel. The energy absorption of the spindles can also be read remotely by tablet or on the operator panel, therefore ensuring quick and efficient adjustments.” Optional setups for the double edgers When processing various formats, the format change must be as fast as possible. The HE500 double edgers can be configured with an automatic setup cycle: this option allows the machine to automatically adjust the opening and closing of the cross-piece depending on the glass size set by the operator and, especially when combined with a barcode scanner, guarantees high productivity even for variable productions.

Multiple customizations Motorized increments of the diamond tools (both front grinding wheels and diamond grinding wheels of the upper and lower fillets), presetting the diamond grinding wheels to enable automatic verification and adjustment of the increment depending on the effective consumption of the wheels themselves, setting the glass removal directly from the panel, and support bars that position automatically for the format change without limiting the minimum processing dimensions (patented), all contribute to the overall customization of the system to meet the various production needs of the clientèle. Using proportional valves controlled from the control panel, it’s also possible to adjust the pressure of the polishing wheels which, through the quick set option, do not move completely away from the glass when disengaged so that they can quickly become operative again when necessary, guaranteeing a perfect finish every time.

stablished in late 2008, Neptun Srl – in addition to its traditional washing and straightline edging business – immediately grasped the importance of automation, especially vertical automation, making significant investments in this field. In just a few years it developed straight-line edgers for automatic glass squaring and measuring (Rock with ETS), washing machines with automated water tank emptying and filling, vertical grinding and drilling working centers for architecture (Promax-Drillmax). The new Quick range which stems from the company’s experience with larger units, is designed to optimize the production of glass doors and

Automation, especially vertical automation has always been important for Neptun. Here are its guiding principles interior partitioning. There are various applications for glass drilling but unfortunately with one common denominator: a very low added value. In order to be profitable, drilling must be as efficient and cost-effective as possible while maintaining quality. High automation reduces

the length of cycles because of the lower impact of manpower thanks to easy programming and faster speed of the positioning axis. Positioning With Quickdrill, sheets are positioned at a speed of up to 30 m/ min, therefore the hole-to-hole positioning time varies from just 2 sec-

60

onds to a maximum of 10 seconds for large sheets. The exclusive glass positioning system guarantees up to 0.15 mm. precision and is not subject to wear. Flexible, fast programming The work program can be generated on the machine, in the office or, for more high-tech companies, in the

ERP and simply called up using a bar code reader. The programming function with embedded programs can be used to quickly create error-free complex programs from simple sub programs. One example is the preparation for repeated multiple drilling which involves calling up program 1 (base) and generating program 2 (complex) indicating the step and number of repetitions, without reprogramming the work from zero. Reliability and speed management The reliability of the machine assures precision drilling without sheet breakage. However managing the processing speed is essential: if this is too slow the tool misses the cut, if it is too fast there is a risk of breakage, therefore operators tend to set minimum speeds to lower the risk of breakage.

In the Quick range, speed is managed on the basis of the work. Processing speed is linked to the tool’s real cutting action: if this is good the speed will be faster, otherwise the speed is adapted to the cutting action, reducing breakage to almost zero, even with poor quality tools or tools that no longer cut well. Modularity and investments Other milling and grinding NC centers can be integrated into the machine at a later stage making this a cost-effective investment that can be spread out in time. Having separate machines also makes for uncompromised quality with exceptional performance, one 3-notch door and 2 holes every 3 min 40 sec. Thanks to their cost-effective high quality, these NC machines are sold in northern Europe, the United States and some countries in Africa.

Tyrolit caters to market demand by drawing on its automotive know-how for a new generation of products

O

ve r r e c e n t y e a r s , t h e a rrival of the new CMS, F o r. E l , L i s e c , N e p t u n , and Intermac vertical working centers on the glass processing market created a need to design and develop diamond tools with new technical processing and quality features. Due to the demand for increasingly higher processing speeds, quality finishes and durability, Ty-

rolit carried out a great deal of research into the development of a new generation of diamond tools with all these features. Since traditional tools did not have the technical features to meet this demand, Tyrolit drew on its know-how in the automotive sector which is the finest expression of flat glass grinding technology. The use of more powerful electrospindles and the need to optimize processing cycles and times led to the development of new specific product lines for vertical flat glass processing. New machines, and most importantly new arrising, grinding, polishing as well as routing and drilling technologies soon generated various new sets of tools. When appropriately combined in a machine these offer great improvements and satisfy all needs. Over recent months, the R&D, technical and production departments at Tyrolit have been busy at work to achieve the required goals of these new vertical CNCs with the specific aim of speeding up processing cycles, improving the quality of the processing work and upgrading performance

(tool speed and working life). As a result of the work done to date, Tyrolit’s tools cater to all the various new market needs. The main sets include tools for the following applications: grinding (cup, trapezoidal as well as “V with a 200mm & 150mm diameter); combined routers (cup and trapezoidal routers); cutting (routers); drilling (drills for all types of machines). More specifically, for trapezoidal grinding (for both float and laminated glass), Tyrolit has provided its experience in a brief document (which can be requested from glass@tyrolit.com). This makes things easier for end users when choosing tools according to the desired end result, considering the diamond alloys of the various tool combinations.
