Building and sharing: the best possible future by
An association, an international exhibition, high-caliber Italian businessmen and professionals: an extended team that sets out to win with dedication and determination

nother year is about to end. In many ways, it was a busy 2015. For Glass in IT style, 12 very constructive months are drawing to a close. We have grown - again – in terms of contents, technologies and partnerships, in great harmony with “our” world: the glass world. Yet, even more important is what we have in mind for the future. We plan to look ahead, because we are convinced that this “extended” team is a real winner. On our side we have an association (Gimav), an international exhibition (Vitrum) and a group of high-caliber Italian businessmen and professionals. Good, important contacts are what we want to aim at, in order to keep growing. The men and women of the glass industry, who met at the 19th international exhibition in Milan and whose comments were collected in the daily videos posted on Vitrum Channel (which you will find in the following pages, as well as on our website), are people who are building their future each day for and together with their companies, in Italy and across the world. And they are working to make it the best possible future. Our thanks go to them for placing their trust in us. However, I would like to extend a personal, special “thank you” to Renata Gaffo, my “mentor” who walked me through my “glass years”, passionately passing on the deep values of this extraordinary business community. Our best wishes also go to Laura Biason and to a gratifying helmsmanship as the new director of the Gimav “world” that will bring results we can share.

he numbers of Vitrum 2015 speak of a show consistent with the previous edition: more than 18,000 visitors (almost equally divided between domestic and foreign provenance), net exhibit surface area of almost 20,000 sq. m, and 347 exhibitors from around the globe. “But I encourage you not to simply look at the data – warns Dino Zandonella Necca, president of Vitrum and CEO of Adi Industrial Diamond Application, with headquarters in Thiene (Vicenza) – as their sterile nature does not tell the whole story. What I saw at Vitrum this year is an encouraging reversal of trend compared to past years. All visitors were professional, industry experts and buyers from all over Italy and even from some unexpected international markets: Colombia and Latin America at the top of the list, but also from the Middle East

11 and areas typically ‘off the radar’ compared to those involved in the ‘incoming’ program organized for the event by ITA Agency”. The show provides an opportunity to meet, compare and evaluate the markets: “During the four days of the exhibition – points out Zandonella – our stand became a hub for all of our global distributors and we also had some encouraging talks with people from countries we have never worked with before. And I noticed this was what my Gimav-member colleagues were experiencing, too. Therefore, I don’t hesitate to say that the quality of visitors at Vitrum 2015 was better than in the past”.

Future prospects “I don’t believe the future holds any spectacular achievements – muses Zandonella – the world has changed and is still changing, rapidly and constantly. The sales levels achieved in the ‘80s and ‘90s are a thing of the past. But we shouldn’t underestimate the series of economic upturns that are pushing the needle on the scales in favor of Italian industry. The re-evaluation of the US Dollar, the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (currently very strong) and the British Pound; the dropping price of oil; instead, the cost of labor in developing countries is rising... These are all indicators that place Italy in a favorable position. Our industry has the advantage of flexibility and quality. The businesses that have managed to survive the crisis are sound, extremely responsive, and are all highly competitive. Perhaps it would behoove us to believe in ourselves first – we must have more faith in our abilities and thus in our possibilities”. United – above all The recipe for a positive outlook toward the future
begins with the ability to blend proficiency and innovation, but it is best expressed in the saying: united we stand. “Now, more than ever, we need to stand before the world as a unified body – insists Zandonella – above and beyond our regional and corporate loyalties. There is no way we can make accurate projections today about tomorrow. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the acceleration of conflicts and local crises is unpredictable. Just look at the escalation of conflicts and international events in the last 40 years. It is true that we are also experiencing a very favorable period for our industry, especially in Europe and Italy. After the deep recession, today’s customers demand and value quality products. Those who had the foresight to invest in quality are certainly well-positioned for the future”. Speaking in industrial terms, price will no longer be the difference: “Businesses need products with competitive costs, not competitive prices. In other words – he explains – products that cost less to make, but can be sold at the
The key elements A big change is taking place inside Vitrum that - emphasizes president Zandonella - “comes at the right time and will bear fruit over the next two years”. The time between now and 20th edition of Vitrum. “Some actions were already put into place this year – he explains – though still in the early stages, and they all contribute to the glass industry. The most obvious outcomes will be apparent over time”. Even the team is changing: Renata Gaffo, director of Gimav and of Vitrum, is turning the helm over to Laura Biason, currently her deputy director. Two complementary professionals, though each with their own style and specific areas of expertise, whose contributions were quite clear at Vitrum 2015. “Renata Gaffo is one of the pillars of our history: her experience and knowledge will be greatly missed. All of her work is commendable and will continue to be valued. I am sure that her legacy will live on. At Vitrum 2015 we highlighted the importance of the past, because in order to move forward successfully, you must first know where you began”. “On the other hand - concludes Zandonella - Laura Biason has gained many years of experience in industry confederation associations. She will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to both Vitrum and Gimav in the creation and strengthening of a constructive synergy among all the businesses and organizations that revolve around our industry”. Adi stand at Vitrum 2015 right price”. And, industrially, the size of businesses can impact the results. “The very large companies – he muses – may have problems being responsive, primarily due to the distance, in terms of communication, between top management and labor, and vice-versa. The really small ones, on the other hand, tend to have problems of liquidity, because they are disadvantaged when it comes to market penetration”. The perfect balance may lie in the medium-sized enterprises because – continues Zandonella – “they benefit from a global vision and typically-Italian flexibility, both in production and in re-directing their targets”.
Invest in quality Adi is an excellent example of this philosophy. “Our firm, for example, is growing by double digit percentage points annually and the forecast is that it will continue in this direction. This year, our consolidated balance at 10 months is a good 5% above the budget, so we will end the year with good turnover and the prognosis for 2016 is also excellent. But we are not the only ones – concludes Zandonella – because, like us, all the companies that made a decision to focus on quality, performance and product improvement are also doing well. And will continue to do so”.

The situation in Italy is still rather stagnant unfortunately, the market is still weak, but exports are booming. America – she pointed out – is definitely the country where the effects of the recovery are strongest. Gimav, as the most important

Marketing and assistance in reaching markets that are rather difficult to enter such as the former Soviet Union countries for example, is definitely something – she ended – that we firmly believe in and that we continue to do on a daily basis”.

(Association Internationale pour l’Histoire du Verre). This is a very valuable object, that has been returned to the public and is “an enormous opportunity” for Vitrum, explained director Renata Gaffo. “For years now the mission of our exhibition, which is associated with Gimav – Italian manufacturers’ association of machinery, accessories and special products for glass processing – is

19 also a cultural one. We aim to take our industrial production as well as our culture to our companies around the world. This is why I am so excited”, she admitted. The glass amphora, depicting the scene of a gladiator fight between a murmillo and a retiarius on the bottom, with the names shown beside the fighters, “has found its place alongside the gladiator material we are collecting at the “Alda Levi” Antiquarium, pointed out Filippo Maria Gamberi, Superintendent for Archeology in Lombardy. The support of the Archeological Office, the attention of Vitrum and the expertise of the Italian National Committee of the AIHV made this restora-
tion work “a good practice that should be repeated in other situations”, confirmed committee president, Maria Grazia Diani. The “Alda Levi” Antiquarium with a section on Milan’s Roman amphitheater, is where the public can admire the unique amphora because of its size and the scene that is depicted, which is truly complex and completely well-preserved. This is a very rare piece, and as such “having brought it to light again intact, and to be able to display it was a noteworthy achievement for us”, ended Rosanina Invernizzi, from the Office for the Archeological Heritage of Lombardy.

So, for the very first time, we decided to hear what the public had to say this year. We met and interviewed some visitors during the 4-day exhibition. Here are their comments.
First-time visitors Eduardo Di Tommaso was a first-time visitor at this year’s Vitrum. He is from Argentina and what is important about Italian technology for him is its “design and quality. At the exhibition – he explained – I expect to see a large number of new offerings and take these to South America”, where he works in the industry. works in the glass industry and he was hoping to “find innovative machinery for glass processing work, washing and treatment” at the exhibition. On the lookout for customers People like Cesare Colombo, were also at the exhibition to “visit potential customers” and although he thinks that Italy is best known for its food, design and fashion industry, he confirmed that as far as technology goes “we are definitely in the forefront” and that this sector “is growing regardless of the crisis”. Carlo Ruffo, who works with automation components, shared the same opinion. “Italian technology leads the way, is on a par with the best worldwide, but you can see there is a clear difference
Partnerships, research and new technologies Also at Vitrum were people who were hoping to find exhibitors with whom they could exchange know-how on new technologies. One example was Luigi Vitali, a researcher at the Polytechnic University of Milan. “We are academics – he pointed out – and as such we are interested in research into technologies. We study energy, heat exchange and solar radiation; we have developed applications related to optical and thermal analysis, so we are looking for someone who would be interested in doing research with us”. The people making their way around the pavilions were full of expectations and this year’s exhibition truly showcased the multi-faceted aspects of glass through technological innovations, design and architecture and history and culture.

hen universities and the world of business meet, when the creativity of the new generations embraces manufacturing skills, in essence, when profitable synergies arise between innovation and tradition, the result can only lead to growth all around. The proof is in the experience of fifty students at the Milan Polytechnic University who participated in the “Glass and new technologies” workshop, organized in partnership between Vitrum, the Milan Polytechnic School of Design – the TeDH (Technology and Design for Healthcare) research group and the HES-SO Freiburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland – Human-Tech Institute. A challenging test, that the young designers from the Polytechnic passed with top marks. gone so smoothly. There were no major snags; the companies (apart from some minor exceptions) booked their space in time which allowed us to make the best of the area; the Fiera Milano services worked very well despite the fact that two very important events for the city were being staged at the same time: EMO, the international machine tool, robot and automation exhibition that takes place in Milan every 6 years (in fact, it won’t be back until 2021), and Expo of course, with its extraordinary but massive organization. Well, if there were any difficulties during the 4-day Vitrum, these were mainly con-
centrated in the evening as people were leaving the exhibition complex, when all the area became a sort of military zone with security checks on daily supplies for Expo. Overall, however, I can now say: I thought it would have been much worse!”. Can you give us a sneak preview of the Vitrum 2015 final report? “As the press releases at the end of the exhibition stated, the space occupied and exhibitor attendance this year were the same as last time. One thing should be pointed out however, especially to those who thought
exhibitions, the recession made companies focus on bringing technicians to Vitrum, who made the difference to the quality of the visitors. I would also like to make a final comment here. the space was smaller. True, it was smaller: we occupied two pavilions not three as in the past. This was only because the exhibition coincided with EMO. However, compared to before, it is worth remembering that – even if in a more compact area – at Vitrum 2015 we occupied the entire exhibition area at our disposal, covering the same space as in 2013. The slightly fewer but better visitors simply reflected the general market trend: in fact whether companies attend as exhibitors or visitors, they tend to make the most of their human and economic resources. Therefore, as at all trade
The time has come to summarize your experience at GimavVitrum. “When I arrived, the Gimav association already had a well-defined personality and role in the international glass scene: an important, well-recognized identity. Together, we worked to create a more independent association, albeit under the wings of the Federation of Industry Associations (FAI), with a dedicated manager and staff. My appointment as director coincided with the FAI becoming fully independent (while still a member of Confindustria), with a number of industry initiatives being launched for the first time in Italy. The world has changed since then, likewise our companies have grown and changed.

We can say that the association has grown in tandem with its companies, from a mutual exchange. I am inclined to think that each side has brought benefits to the other. Furthermore, Gimav’s independence has helped implementing much more targeted strategies for the sector: this has greatly benefited everybody, because in making internationalization our main mission, and by accompanying and representing our member companies at events all over the world, we have learnt how to acquire visibility by promoting the value of Italian machinery and technology.
33
Hopes for the future? “I hope the current market signs, which are still a bit weak, become stronger and that the association can keep growing. I hope that Gimav will become more fundamental for, and closer to its members: companies should keep their own strategies and personality, but I think it is very useful to also develop a mutual need and desire to network; recent events have shown that you can’t go anywhere alone. A real, deep-rooted sharing of intents therefore: I have always been a strong supporter of associations. When you do things on your own it’s one thing; under the umbrella of the association it’s differ-
ent: a group is strong, united and cohesive and therefore has bargaining power. This is what we have always worked on and is one of the reasons why the whole world now talks about the glass machinery of Gimav members”. Last year, last day... “I will be working conscientiously until the last day: to complete everything I have to do. Yet I also want to take the time to say goodbye and thank you to all the people I shared this experience with me, for their esteem and for what they have given to me over the past 30 years”.

With “very good” attendance by very interested trade people who also intended to close deals at the exhibition, “the 1,000 sqm area occupied by the Gimav group exhibition was a crowd-puller, with a wide range of Italian machinery and products on display where potential buyers could see and touch the new proposals”. Italian companies are so innovative that “we were very proud of going overseas as a Gimav group exhibition – Biason pointed out – because the producers of glass processing

The companies were therefore all satisfied with how things went at GlassBuild America, Biason confirmed, because of the deals that were made

2016: US manufacturing surges In 2016 “the US manufacturing sector will grow significantly”. The statement comes from the latest report by MAPI (Manufacturers’ Alliance for Productivity and Innovation Association). This is very important information for Italian manufacturers of glass processing machinery and accessories, which therefore confirms the positive trend they could actually feel at Atlanta in September. “During the exhibition – said Gimav deputy director, Laura Biason – important trade talks were started, showing that the interest in Italian products comes from a market that is clearly on the way to recovery”. The situation was confirmed by MAPI figures, showing that 2015 will close with growth in 19 out of the 23 industrial sectors that it monitors. Only three will decrease and one, aluminum, will remain at the same level as last year. According to the report which was prepared for GlassBuild by ITA Agency, Italian imports into the US include hollow glass, flat glass, fiberglass, and special products. The market for these products, the ITA Agency report continues, accounts for 65% of glass industry revenues, containers account for 20% and flat glass for about 15%. The main customers are the automotive, construction, glass bottle and container industries.
ects. As a result – she ended – there is a great deal of interest in highly innovative glass production”. In keeping with well-established trends in Europe, there is an ongoing search for solutions to construct buildings that allow more light inside, with a better air quality, and improved en-
ergy performance. Furthermore “photovoltaic energy, which uses sunlight for electric power supply in buildings, could become the norm in the United States”, reads the ITA (Italian Trade Agency) September report, which was prepared for GlassBuild America 2015.

015 will close on a positive note, better than in 2014. The forecasts are good for 2016 too and we will do our very best to make sure that it goes that way”. These words show the satisfaction of Tiziano Lama, regional sales manager at Cefla Finishing Group and contact for the Glass and Fiber Cement busi-
nesses, who anticipated the final results of the past year for the Imolabased company (Bologna). Cefla is a worldwide leader in the finishing, decoration and digital printing of wood and its by-products. It designs and manufactures customized and “turnkey” systems for the wood market and for the glass, plastics, fiber cement, composite materials and metal industries. The company was at Vitrum 2015 with its Mito automatic spray machine “which has been designed – Lama explained – to obtain special effects by applying two colors at the same time. This caters to the growing use of glass in interiors which, as a result, involves the use of organic finishes”. “Most of the people visiting our stand

– the manager went on – were from Italy and central Europe: mainly France, Germany and Switzerland. On the one hand, we had fewer new customers – he admitted – but on the other, we saw many of our old customers and experts in the sector”. “Although we noticed a decrease in
the number of visitors compared to the past and we expected more from the concomitant staging with the World Expo, it is also equally true that the contacts we made at the exhibition were top quality, and we immediately started working on these after the exhibition ended”, said Lama.

Alessandro Fenzi: “Once again Vitrum proved to be a top-ranking event, with four days of hard work”
“T
he outcome was certainly positive. They were four days of hard work. Vitrum continues to be an important occasion to meet long-standing customers as well as new partners who are interested in specialized technology; like every event before it, we achieved good results. Visitors at Vitrum proved to be very interested
in our new offerings, as well as the technological and performance characteristics of all of our products”. This is what Alessandro Fenzi, Ceo of the company had to say about the recently ended flat and hollow glass processing trade expo, Vitrum. The Group arrived at Vitrum 2015 with a completely revamped and utterly striking stand, designed to convey to industry operators the message: “Anytime, anywhere, we are there for you”. Objects we use on a daily basis and accompany each moment of our daily lives, embody the pivoting contribution Fenzi, Alu-Pro and Rolletch make to the continuous improvement of our well-being. – from sealants to latest generation spacers, decorative paints to mirror paints – help transform glass into specific products such as insulating windows, interior furniture and finishes, mirrors, bottles, embellished glasses and many other objects that enhance the beauty, safety and comfort of our living space. A concept perfectly conveyed by the original comic strip displayed in giant format across the internal walls of the Glass Alliance stand. “The entire Fenzi and Glass Alliance team was at the expo from start to finish – Fenzi continues – to present new products and provide information on the entire range of products for different business units. This year we specifically focused on products being launched on the market: Duralux Ultra, Butylver TPS, and Mul-

titech. We also wished to highlight the great deal of attention we pay to technological research and innovation by being part of the “Research and Experimentation” section of the ‘Glass. The Great Unexpected’ show. The products of excellence on display at the exhibition could not fail to include Duralux Solar Coatings, our line of paints for solar panels, which currently represents the most advanced level of development achieved for this kind of products”.

The Group stand primarily attracted a European crowd: “A trend – the CEO explains – we started noticing some time ago at all leading expos for this sector. These events, although extremely significant for their macro area of reference, tend to attract less visitors from distant continents”. “What was truly significant at this event – was the initiative organized by Vitrum in partnership with the ITA Agency, which invited to the expo trade professionals from highly interesting areas such as North America, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, etc. Visi-
tors who attended thanks to this initiative were many, and meeting them proved worthwile”. “Vitrum – he concludes – has always been a very “efficient” expo: not dispersive nor overly large, and with an influx of visitors which, although always important, is not overwhelming, and therefore allows exhibitors to spend their time very productively, and avoid any downtime. We should also add that Milan is surely the most beautiful and interesting city for hosting the glass world-expo: such a prestigious location is definitively an advantage worth exploiting”.

summarized by Engineer Roberto Carosati, from the Technical department of Logli Massimo Spa, which arrived at Vitrum 2015 with a large 200 m2 stand, filled with innovative and cutting-edge accessories. At the expo the company displayed its versatile Defender parapet, which can be used indoors or outdoors, in public or private places, just about anywhere, including sports facility stands. The system, as a result of the quality of its construction materials and anchoring system, has been a reference point in the sector of unperforated and wedge-free glass parapets for years now. Two exhibit spaces featured Logli brand adhesives, which provide a strong bond under any conditions thanks to the guaranteed performance of latest generation

Their brand new patented “Safe Seat” system keeps the upper hinge fastened to the pivot in case of accidental breakage of the glass. “And – Carosati points out – let’s not forget about the synergy recently established with one of the largest groups in the glass sector, Saint Gobain, for the exclusive marketing of Janus+, Minos+ and BTWIST products, fully adjustable and super reliable door closures and hydraulic hinges. Lastly, to install doors and glass walls in rooms with masonry, there is the innovative variable width and load system for glass up to 13.52 mm thick,
paired with our exclusive vertical lock “Apro”, of minimalist design, with no visible screws”. “This year’s Vitrum event, and all future ones, will continue to be not-to-miss events for getting reacquainted with the excellence of companies who embraced glass as their mission. We – Carosati emphasizes – attended with the enthusiasm of those who truly believe in this sector, want to be in it, develop it, and give customers new experiences and innovative technologies that allow them to do a better job, work faster and in utter safety. 2016? Will be filled with appointments, many of which abroad – he concludes – where we’ll have the opportunity to let the world know that the “Italy of glass” certainly has a say in it”.

Claudio Viti: “Italian hollow glass is a world ‘power’, in order to revive its sales on the domestic market we need to think about targeted incentives”

“O
verall, returning to the fourday expo in Milan after years of absence was good for us, also because of the incoming initiative organized in partnership with the ITA Agency, which focused primarily on “hot” clients. But Vitrum is mainly geared towards flat glass, and therefore does not entice our target customer base. If the event were to undergo a “remake” in the future, a great deal of thought should certainly be given to attracting more customers from our specific sector”. Nonetheless happy to have attended Vitrum 2015, Claudio Viti, sales manager of Glass Service, reflects on how the show may become strategically important for hollow glass as well. “At the global market level – he explains – our sector is universally known as the second industrial “power” for both quality and

numbers. Therefore the idea of hosting an exhibition for our sector “at home” is not only good, but reasonable and well justified. In practice however, we need to consider where it would fit within an already crowded and evolving global context of trade expos”. The sector and trade expos participation “It is undeniably true that the current trend is to host expos in the hottest
market locations – Viti underlines – and several events are regularly held all over the world each year. Considering that exhibitors are attracted to an expo by the number of potential clients, and the latter in turn depends on the offerings by exhibiting companies, launching a hollow glass trade expo in Italy may be diffi-

operators in the sector specifically targeted by the expo, because unless it is held regularly it would not be a fixed appointment on the customers’ calendar”.
The European context “On the other hand – the manager adds – the European context is quite established and firmly connected to Glasstec, which draws the attention of Pan-European operators. This was proven by the laughable number of visitors Glassman expo in Lyon attracted this year”. With regard to creating an ultra-specialized Hollow Glass expo, he says “It would need to attract not only Italian but foreign companies as well, to ensure the event is interesting enough from the visitors’ perspective. But consequently it may be at risk of not involving the entire sector (which would be a shame) or – in lack of a fixed schedule – require greater publicity to reach
Overall results for 2015 “2015 has been a year with plenty of hard work and activity: we received many requests for quotes, but it was hard to turn them into contracts. Right now the global context is still complicated – Viti admits – with the Russian economy being in a (steadily) negative situation, the Chinese economy, which drives the Asian market, idle for the first time in many years, and that of Brazil in a state of difficulty. Nonetheless, there are signs of interest from investors, and projects are being planned, at least on paper. If we are able to harvest the fruit of our work and these projects are implemented – the manager concludes – 2016 may be another good year for us”.

ur participation was an ‘experiment’, with the unprecedented staging of a group stand dedicated to hollow glass. Although Vitrum is mainly viewed as an event dedicated to flat glass, the participation of hollow glass businesses was a not-to-be missed opportunity since it ran concurrent with Expo and given the fact that Italian hollow glass processing technology has
maintained its leadership position intact”. Michele Gusti, president of Ocmi Otg as well as president of Gimav’s Hollow Glass group, sums up the outcome of the fourday show in Milan dedicated to the world of glass, pointing out that “the current, unsettled market situation in Europe is also reflected in attendance at industry trade shows. All things considered – Gusti continues – Vitrum provided positive

Hollow Glass area stands at Vitrum 2015 So, what guidelines should be followed to adequately enhance the presence of hollow glass at a future edition of Vitrum? “First of all, I believe that promotion of this event needs to be upgraded with targeted initiatives expressly focused on the hollow glass industry, with even stronger emphasis on Italy’s leadership in this area . To do this - emphasizes Gusti - the trade press certainly plays a pivotal role, but it is not enough”.

results and, as in the past, proved to be the customary and most-favored exhibition among trade professionals from the Middle East and North Africa, and, to a lesser extent as mentioned above, from Europe”. And it is precisely from North Africa that the Milan-based group primarily expects to see its efforts, before and during the show, bear fruit.
Partnership with ITA (Italian Trade Agency) “The partnership - confirms the president of Ocmi - between the organizers and the exhibiting companies was very positive, with the aim of selecting customers and prospects to target with special invitations. And the incoming mission of foreign professionals during Vitrum, in my opinion, should also be repeated at future editions”. But, if “the primary objective of a
n. 35 - DECEMBER 2015
trade show is not so much to write orders as to lay the groundwork for new business opportunities to be cultivated over the long term”, then Michele Gusti sees an invaluable resource in the partnership with ITA. “ITA could be of real help in analyzing new potential markets -- like SubSaharan and Mediterranean Africa -- that potentially could be a very enticing visitor base for Vitrum, given its strong international reach”. Not rivals, but more focused Pondering, instead, the idea of a “fair within the fair”, with the look of a superspecialized niche, Ocmi is considering the opportunities presented by the events dedicated to finished products, “where the exhibitors are the actual or potential users of our technologies. However - admits Gusti - at this time, I am fairly pessimistic about the fact that such events
can be organized in Italy. Germany is a very close neighbor and it would be difficult to compete with events like Ambiente and Cphi”. “The idea of events that focus more on special kinds of products or technologies - he adds - would be of interest, but you need to take into account the already well-established existing fairs. The proliferation of events and the frequency with which they are held certainly does not help to grow attendance at each one of them. At the end of the day, considering our experience at this year’s Vitrum, I think the best thing would be to continue to focus on this exhibition, trying to promote it as much as possible through the initiatives we have discussed”. Year-end trends Finally, 2015 is drawing to a close. What are the trends for Ocmi? “We are quite pleased with the last 12 months. The first half of 2016 will definitely be solid, especially given the results at the close of 2015, but we certainly cannot rest on our laurels. Servicing existing customers must go hand-in-hand with the development of innovations to be applied to existing technologies, thoughtful consideration of the events in which to participate, expansion of sales and marketing activities – all in order to develop business opportunities across various markets”, concludes Gusti.

tlas Copco expanded its product portfolio for the Glass sector with its new GHS VSD+ inverterequipped screw vacuum pumps which can cut energy consumption in half. The glass version of the GHS VSD+ pump is used for glass molding. The molding process uses the vacuum created inside the mold in combination with the conventional method of blowing the gob into the mold with oil-free compressed air.
The idea is to “pull” the gob with the vacuum while “pushing” it with compressed air. Using a vacuum provides benefits to
Using a vacuum benefits glass manufacturers in many ways - Increased productivity: Higher forming speed - lower rejection rate - more bottles per day - Improved process: More efficient heat exchange - greater forming precision - better 3D engraving - Environment: Less glass per bottle - more lightweight bottles lower energy consumption using less compressed air

It increases productivity due to a higher forming speed and lower rejection rate, thus increasing production in terms of bottles per day. It also improves the process by providing more efficient heat exchange, greater forming precision and better 3D engraving. Energy savings The variable-speed drive (VSD+) and reference value control are unique characteristics of these vacuum pumps that can lead to significant energy savings. Being able to set the pressure means optimizing the energy used in order to keep the process vacuum level constant, which ultimately means optimizing the efficiency and performance of the customer’s system. Thus the pump supplies only the minimum flow rate necessary, corresponding to the vacuum level at the required speed, without wasting anything. Maximum efficiency Providing maximum yields for every kW absorbed, the GHS VSD+ pump completely out-performs all other vacuum technologies in the respective pressure range. State-of-the-art coalescing filters reduce environmental emissions, while lowering the operating temperatures and energy consumption of the motor. A suction control valve also modulates the flow rate of the pump based on demand, reducing energy consumption even further. Quiet operation The GHS VSD+ pump is based on variable-speed screw technology, resulting in quieter operation and greater
efficiency compared to recirculatedoil rotary vane and liquid ring vacuum pumps. The GHS VSD+ vacuum pumps operate at an average noise level of just 65 dB(A).
Goal: productivity The Compressors Division is a Division of Atlas Copco Compressor Technique. It develops, produces and markets oil-injected and oilfree air compressors, vacuum pumps, blowers, gas generators, air treatment solutions and compressor control and monitoring systems. In addition to offering a wide range of products for various industries, it also provides dedicated solutions for customers operating in the marine, railway, medical and oil&gas sectors. The Division’s main goal is to further improve the productivity of its customers. The headquarters and main production center of this Division is located in Anversa, Belgium.
