and it shows…
First of all, you can touch the quality of our machines over the strong stainless steel with which they are made, inside and outside. Then you can see it, in the optimum production performance combined with reduced maintenance costs. Last but not least, you can hear our quality... hardly at all, because our machines really are very quiet. So you can’t go wrong, whichever Triulzi you choose, quality is not an option, it’s standard supply.
So, which washing machine will you choose? Washing and drying machines for flat glass, curved glass and not only Automatic line for laminating , double glazing, etched glass | Powdering units

Russia and Brazil: we’ll be there, too Mir Stekla and Glass South America are the next destinations for the group stands led by Gimav. Our interviews give voice to the key players
A
fter our recent trip to China, it is time to pack for Russia and Brazil. Yes, because the first half of June is undoubtedly going to be one of the most action-packed of the year. Gimav member firms are in-
vested in participating in Mir Stekla and in Glass South America, two strategic international events for the world of glass and - despite the current socio-economic climate - not-to-be-missed. This issue is dedicated to them, with the Country Profiles, interviews with participants and the Dossiers on the technologies and the products the companies will be showcasing at the fairs. The contents can also be read in Russian and in Portuguese in the online editions of “Focus on Mir Stekla” and “Focus on Glass South America”, on our website. We want to remind you that printed versions of both of the Focus issues will be distributed by Gimav to all the visitors to the Italy Pavilion area of both trade shows. It’s not just about Moscow and São Paulo, though, because other must-reads include the Chromatech Ultra Technical Data Sheet, news from the GIMAV seminar on Free Trade Agreements and the interview with Laura Biason, the director of Gimav and Vitrum, for the Vitrum 2017 Preview. Last but not least, our video-interviews with: Rodolfo Scatigna, at Inside Intermac; and Prof. Adriana Baglioni, who served as our guide through the “Hi-Tech Art” show, the idea for which was sparked by “Glass. The Great Unexpected”, at Vitrum 2015; and the top management of AGC - Asahi Glass during the presentation of “Amorphous” at Milan’s Design Week 2016. Enjoy the read! Chiara Marseglia

gain this year, Gimav is traveling to Mir Stekla with the group of its member firms: Alu-Pro, Antonini, Fenzi, Glass Service, Ocmi-OTG, Olivotto, Pneumofore, and TK are the brands representing Italian mechanical engineering and flat and hollow glass processing technology, accessories and special products. “Despite the challenging economic climate - remarks Laura Biason, director of Gimav - Russia is maintaining its commitment to promote and stimulate the country’s development. We should also not forget that, now more than ever, the CIS countries and Asian nations in general, need to buy glass processing machinery, equipment, products and technologies. Russia’s glass market is expanding and needs solutions, machines and innovative products, which is why this event is so attractive to the leading European industry companies, with Italy out in front”. “Our country - adds the director - is a mainstay in the construction of machinery for processing flat and hollow glass, as in all the industries where the ‘Made in Italy’ brand has

11 consistently upheld the banner of value: fashion, food and design, in the forefront. The quality of Italy’s technology remains a must-have that is able to make a difference, strengthened by its ability to engender loyalty among international customers, thanks in part to the superb flexibility and efficiency of its customer assistance services around the world. In addition, the experiences of many of our member companies confirm that Russia continues to be a strategic market, worthy of the utmost consideration because the demand for cutting edge equipment is on the rise”. Mir Stekla is an especially appealing trade show for customers from Russia and the CIS, who rarely participate in or visit industry trade shows outside their countries. “The leading players in the global market know this - concludes Laura Biason - which is one more reason why Italy must be there”.

he most recent data made available by the ITA (International Trade Agency) in Moscow confirm that in 2015 (as in 2014), Italy again finds itself in 4th place as an importer from the Russian Federation and in 5th place as a supplier, with total trade at 21.7 billion Euros overall: 5.3 billion in imports from Italy and 16.45 billion in exports to Italy.
Machinery remains competitive The leading sector in the import-export ratio with Russia is industrial machinery and equipment (area in which Italy is the third supplier in the world), securely in the lead in the by-industry ranking with 43.2%; followed by semi-processed goods, fashion and accessories (for which Italy is in second place overall), agriculture and beverages, interior dĂŠcor and building and construction,

automotive, chemical and pharmaceutical. According to Russian Customs sources (ITA Moscow data, December 2015), regarding the industrial machinery and equipment industry, Italy’s competitor countries in exports to Russia are, in order, China (ranking first since 2014) and Germany (second place, also since 2014).
Instability and its consequences The instability of the ruble continues to linger: the devaluation of the Russian currency vs. the dollar and the euro continues to be affected by fluctuations in the price of oil. And this, along with sanctions against the Federation introduced last year by the European Union, places quite a burden on relations between suppliers or sub-suppliers (Italian and otherwise), and the Russian players.
New market approach As became clear in March at the presentation in Milan of the new “Invest in Russia” guide for Italian business-

men (developed by the Ministry for Economic Development, the Italian Trade Association in Russia, the Italian embassy in Moscow and other members of the Italian corporate world in the Russian Federation), what needs to be leveraged now is a new kind of approach to business relations, rethinking trade balances with an eye to the long term, because - according to Ambassador Cesare Maria Ragaglini the economies of Italy and Russia are complementary”.
Technologies at the show Mir Stekla 2016 opens in this complicated but open-to-newbusiness-strategies scenario. The international trade show dedicated to the world of glass processing and its technologies will be held in Moscow this coming June 6th-9th. This event, in its 18th edition, is focused on bringing together in the Expocentre exhibit area, more than 140 businesses from Russia’s glass industry. But - as Viktor Osipov, president of StekloSouz of Russia (The National United Council of Glass Industry Enterprises) and also president of the Mir Stekla 2016 Organizing Committee, remarked in a recent interview - “more than 200 participating companies from 25 countries around the world will converge in Moscow, with expectations for a visitor count in excess of 10,000”.

An opportunity to understand how to transact business in this country “Mir Stekla is the leading fair not only for Russia, but also for all markets in the ex-Soviet Union countries, markets in which our company has traditionally achieved excellent results. It’s hard to say today what the 2016 edition of Mir Stekla

will bring in terms of results. Nevertheless, the Moscow fair will help us to understand how we can continue to do business with this country in the current situation and, above all, in the future. It’s not easy to forecast the future. Economic sanctions, the falling price of oil and the drop in the value of the ruble have greatly affected demand, as well as domestic consumption and international trade, and therefore Italian trade, negatively affecting the most export-oriented industries”.

Operating in the entire Russian market, always dynamic and ready to invest “The Russian market is going through a very delicate phase. Russian customers’ readiness to invest is heavily influenced by the weak ruble
and current international political scene. Over the years Intermac has built up a solid, spreadout distribution network which extends well beyond standard industrial and business hubs and embraces the entire ex-USSR. This provides us with unique opportunities completely out of reach for companies less rooted in the territory. In fact, our strength in these markets was clearly visible at our last annual open house, Inside Intermac, where the largest delegation of visitors was precisely those coming form the ex-USSR. Once again our dynamic energy and continued investment in our customers and their commercial partners prove to be the best strategy for riding out challenging economic times and emerging even stronger than before”.

With its special design, the Genius RSA is able to maintain the same cutting precision over time, which in turn ensures a quick return on investment and makes it one of the major strengths of the workshop where it’s installed.

Top of the line Master 35 is a CNC work center with a 5-axis multi-function processing head. This machine ranks at the top of its product family due to its remarkable processing unit which can easily carry out even the most complex operations. The wide range of optional devices provides for maximum customization based on the customer’s needs, especially when it comes to reducing the work area set-up time and increasing tool changing and ďŹ ne-tuning speed.
A go-to brand Intermac is the brand of the Biesse Group, a group specialized in the production of machinery for the glass processing industry. The division has a work force of about 350 employees including workers, technicians and engineers, with a production area of over 20,000 square meters in its Pesaro factory and 12 branches located all over the world. With over 1000 work centers installed and operating worldwide, Intermac is one of the leading names in the glass industry. On display at Mir Stekla 2016, the Genius RSA and Master 35 exhibit their full potential through live demonstrations during the fair, while the Intermac team is on hand to advise customers on how to improve their production cycle.

The minimum dimensions that can be processed are 50x50 mm or 45x60 mm for a maximum weight of 1000 kg. The main conveyor of the edger runs on ball bearings and adjusts to the various thicknesses by means of a PLC with dedicated software. The transport system drastically reduces friction without requiring constant lubrication. It guarantees improved results, reduces component wear and therefore extends service life, exhibits precision with quick and easy maintenance and can even be upgraded without incurring high costs. The glass is conveyed into the machine by means of a belt conveyor. The system has drive gears which are hermetically sealed in watertight boxes. A special device at the entry of the machine allows the operator to increase the removal of glass without intervening on the diamond grinding wheels, which are completely automatic with settings independent from one another to adjust to different removal operations. All machine functions, grinding wheel management, parameters and statistics display are managed by the PLC.
Water and energy savings Direct connection of the grinding wheel to the reference motor offers energy savings, while the closed-circuit water cooling system reduces water consumption. The FPS20RS straightline edger has a series of optional accessories such as the dubbing device, entry/exit and height extensions, automatics and washing machine which improve performance.

At the show to keep interest high in the company’s entire range
“For years, Mir Stekla has been a pivotal trade show; it allows us to constantly monitor Eastern European markets and to analyze demand and customer needs. This year we will be on hand at the event with an info-point overseen by our local agent”. “One reason Triulzi - TC Special Equipments is passionate about being at Mir Stekla is its desire to keep customers focused on its entire machine inventory, which the company has manufactured for more than 60 years, serving various sectors: from building and construction to interior decor, from solar to automotive, IG units and laminated glass, automatic acidetching systems and the application of talc in the automotive industry. Russia’s market is currently stagnant but, for us, business has been good, especially from the Baltic states. I believe that in the near future the demand from glass manufacturers in this market will be for simple machinery and they will not be making major investments in new technologies due to the complexities of the current situation, and also because both the ruble and the barrel price of oil will not readjust in the short-mid term”.

Committed to understanding the market and pre-empting its needs, for more than 60 years R&D activities have been one of the core assets of Triulzi, allowing it to deliver highly reliable and premium quality solutions, all features ensured by Triulzi’s strictly-Italian production. Over the years, unstinting investments in R&D have allowed the company to grow, while at the same time improving its already excellent customer assistance program.

On an upward growth curve, from one edition to the next, two years ago the event achieved record numbers of visitors: about 13,000 including qualified industry professionals and representatives from the best local businesses who chose GSA as the place to interact with 200 exhibitors from around the world. And among these, throngs of visitors found their way to the Italian group stand. “It is true - remarks Laura Biason, director of Gimav - these are very complex times for Brazil. power. Add to that the devastating effects of the issues facing the building industry”. But, despite these difficulties, the country is showing a strong desire to reach a turning point. “We should not forget - emphasizes the director - that, for example, against all expectations, most of the facilities meant to host the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were completed a full 4 months prior to the opening of the Games. A key indicator that we must not underestimate”. In such a vast territory and with its enormous potential, where there is a lot to do and much to build, a long-term outlook is the winning key to concluding business deals. Betting on a country that today is experiencing such a difficult situation is a challenge that - Ms. Biason emphasizes our Gimav members have chosen to take on because they are aware of the value of their contribution”. “For years - she concludes - Brazil, and several other Latin American countries have been strategic markets for our members. But for some of them, this is an initial, advantageous opportunity to approach the market. With the strength of the group energy, the 2016 edition could be decisive for launching new, worthwhile, long-term relationships”.

he Italy-Brazil axis is based primarily on bilateral economic cooperation which, in 2015 was decidedly strengthened, thanks to some major events that occurred at the highest institutional levels - from the Sixth Cooperation Council in Brasilia (April 2015) to the delegation of business professionals led by Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, in November, where a memorandum of understanding, dedicated to bilateral cooperation and the promotion of investments in strategic sectors, was signed. Furthermore, in December 2015, the GdL - Bilateral Work Group - coordinated by the Italian Embassy and Brazil’s Ministry of Economic Planning, was officially established to promote business consultation on the topics of energy, airport and roadway infrastructures, and harbor-related opportunities.
Despite the current political and economic crisis, trade with Italy continues to perform well N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
Exports and trade Sources inside Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (Ministério do Desenvolvimento, Indústria e Comércio Exterior) report that trade with Italy has grown - from 2003 to 2013 - by almost 200%. The 2014 and 2015 decreases in Italian exports to Brazil (at approximately 4.67 billion dollars) did not however erode the value of Italy’s performance which appears steady at good levels, with a market share of 2.73% (down slightly from 2014) and in line with that of its primary European competitor, Germany. As usual, more than 50% of Italy’s exports to Brazil are products from industries with high added value, including automotive components, packaging machinery, helicopters, vaccines and therapeutic products, and watercraft. To date, Italy is present in Brazil with almost 900 branch offices and manufacturing plants (belonging to top Italian industries but also smaller, lesser-known companies), that contribute greatly to the creation of jobs, thanks in part to
38 N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
39 the spin-offs produced. The preferred target areas for Italian investments are the more economically-developed southern states. But our companies are also beginning to explore the northeast (Pernambuco, Maranhão, Bahia) and the central (Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul) parts of the country that can boast higher growth rates and thus, more attractive opportunities.
Research and productivity centers The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) indicates that the State of São Paulo - with its research centers like Campinas, Ribeirão Preto, São Carlos and São José dos Campos - stands out in terms of its productivity levels and the substantial number of businesses located there. The area of Campinas is the leading economic center with production of close to 8% of the state’s overall GDP and about 50,000 established companies (50 of which are subsidiaries of the 500 biggest global enterprises). At São José dos Campos, instead, a model smart city is blossoming that was sixth in the 2015 ranking of Endeavor Brazil entrepreneurial cities. Without question, Brazil is currently going through a tremendous political and economic crisis that makes it less attractive to international investors. But, at the same time, it could afford an opportunity in the midto long-term for Italian investors, in terms of acquisition of production assets. And the driving force launched precisely by the manufacturing centers with an affinity for innovation is a telltale signal.

Brazil: a developing yet unsaturated market “Glass South America is still an important event even though Brazil is going through hard times, meaning that this edition of the fair will probably fail to live up to its past results”. “The domestic market is basically stalled due to various problems, including the current political situation and poor exchange rate between the
euro and Brazilian real. As long as these two major issues remain unchanged, doing business in Brazil will be very complicated”. “We achieved great results on the Brazilian market during the last 7-8 years, registering the highest number of machines sold, although we’ve seen a notable decline in sales between 2012 and 2014”. “Brazil continues to have great potential, however, as the domestic market is unsaturated and still has the ability and need to purchase glass processing machinery. When the current situation finally changes, the market will definitely be able to take off again, but I just don’t think it can recover completely and return to its past levels”.

During sheet rotation, the system prevents the turnover unit from striking any other processed glass sheets. The series of photocells along the sheet’s path eliminates the risk of impact between glass sheets, even in the event of errors due to any malfunctioning of the PLC.
The FPS15 and FPS15S9 edging machines Edger models FPS15 and FPS15S9 are “favorites” for completing vertical lines. These machines with 8 and 9 grinding wheels are used to produce a flat edge with arisses and 45 degree front bevel. Remarkably user-friendly, they perform high-quality edging and are especially suited for the production of mirrors, shelves for bathroom furnishing and laminated glass. The conveyor is formed by rubber-coated pads, fixed to chains with ball-bearing supports that slide along steel guides. The carriage doesn’t require constant lubrication and the machine self-regulates the processing thickness, with independent setting of the diamond grinding wheels and automatic adjustment of the polishing wheels. The polishing wheel motors are two-speed motors, and the lifting of the crosspiece allows the cut to be adjusted up to 4 mm without changing the setting of the diamond grinding wheels. wFinally, the machine is cooled by a closed-circuit water cooling system.

hromatech Ultra is the exclusive hybrid spacer bar for high-performance insulating glass units made of 0.1 mm thick stainless steel reinforced with ribbing and a special plastic top. Produced by Alu-Pro and Rolltech and marketed worldwide by the Glass Alliance network, which both companies are members of along with the Fenzi Group, this innovative spacer bar uses warm edge technology.
Benefits of warm edge technology Warm edge technology, and Chromatech Ultra in particular, significantly reduces the thermal bridge in insulating glass units. This minimizes condensation on the window and prevents condensation damage to the frame, while
Marketed by the Glass Alliance network, Chromatech Ultra is the result of the synergy between Alu-Pro and Rolltech know-how N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
The Chromatech Ultra project: its concept, evolution and developments When did the Chromatech Ultra project begin? “The conceptual development of Chromatech Ultra began in 2007, but we started testing our first products on the market as early as 2008. Based on customer feedback, the product was optimized before its official high-volume launch in 2009. The product was patented mainly for the method in which the various materials were combined, but many of the production processes are also unique processes used only within the Glass Alliance. Some of these processes are actually the key to our success and competitiveness on the market”. Can you briefly describe the important milestones of its development? “Rolltech supplied warm edge spacers made of stainless steel for many years, and this type of product is highly resistant, stable and long-lasting. The growing demand for spacer bars with a low thermal transmittance, however, led us to combine
the stainless steel with special plastic materials capable of guaranteeing a significantly lower thermal transmittance. Uniting our extensive experience and remarkable expertise in the production and profiling of stainless steel spacer bars with our knowledge of various state-of-theart materials, we succeeded in providing a warm edge spacer bar with outstanding performance in terms of thermal insulation and resistance. Even after eight years on the market nobody has been able to match our thermal performance for this type of hybrid spacer bar”. Which and how many human resources came into play for its development? “During the developmental stage, we invested heavily in the machinery and tools best suited for producing one of the most widely recognized and used warm edge spacer bars in the world, achieving unparalleled explosive growth on the market. Our technical team, in both Denmark and
54 N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
55 Interview with Lars Knudsen, Rolltech Managing Director Italy, worked closely with material and equipment suppliers in order to develop and industrialize Chromatech Ultra. The spacer bar is produced in Italy and Denmark to ensure better proximity to our customers and higher efficiency of our customer assistance and delivery services”. How important is the synergy of skills in the Glass Alliance network? “The first developmental stages were carried out in Rolltech in Denmark, but just like any other product it was optimized in various subsequent stages over the years. The biggest advancement and best improvement was version F by Alu-Pro in 2011 and implemented in Denmark shortly afterwards. Laser marking for traceability and complete control of the production chain was implemented similarly. Then the material and processes were optimized further to improve performance even more while reducing costs for the benefit of our customers”.
What are the target countries? “Chromatech Ultra is highly successful in all the main reference markets. While warm edge technology is applied mainly in Europe, where the largest volume is used, our strong global presence through the Glass Alliance has led to significant growth in the sales success of Chromatech Ultra in all other markets using this technology. This means we reach a new sales record almost every month, and we see no reason why this shouldn’t continue”. What variants are available? “Chromatech Ultra is available in all the primary shapes and colors used on the major markets. There are even different versions available for special applications. The world around us will continue to evolve and change and we’ll continue to develop new and even more ideal solutions for our customers, thereby contributing to global energy saving and the reduction of CO2 emissions”.

further reducing the system’s heat loss (U-value) by 0.1-0.2 W/m2K. These features are essential for meeting the new energysaving needs of today’s offices and residences.
Workability Chromatech Ultra also offers outstanding workability, being remarkably easy to bend using standard tools without compromising quality or durability, coupled with excellent rigidity. The special plastic mixtures used for the upper surface make the spacer bar extremely hard and cold-resistant, making it virtually impossible to scrape the corners and therefore resulting in greater stability. This enables the production of perfectly shaped rectangular frames which ensure a maximum seal on the window.
Supply Chromatech Ultra is available in the following RAL colors: 7035 (light grey), 7040 (dark grey), 8003 (light brown), 8016 (dark brown), 9004 (black) and 9016 (white).

n October 2015, Vitrum was the perfect venue for an immenseLaura Biason, ly popular cultural exhibit: the director of “Glass. The great unexpected” Gimav and Vitrum show, organized in partnership with curator Adriana Baglioni, Professor Emeritus of the Technology of Architecture, Polytechnic University of Milan, and with the support of ITA (the Italian Trade Agency). Retracing nearly two thousand years of history through the objects on display, Vitrum once again demonstrated its skill at balancing Italy’s long-standing tradition in glass processing with the latest in technology and innovation. We spoke about this with Laura Biason, director of Vitrum and Gimav.
The Vitrum team cultivates a network of wide-ranging relationships with institutions, trade associations, universities and research centers N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
What can be said about the importance of this event within the show that, every two years, mobilizes interest in the world of glass in Italy? “The 2015 edition of Vitrum was a team effort based on partnerships with the many players that are active in the industry. We put on several special events over the four days of the show. The ‘Glass. The Great Unexpected’ exhibit was a pivotal moment in the 19th edition of the show, offering a sweeping overview of the use of glass in premium-quality production, seen through the lens of history, advanced technology and commitment to innovation. The show also drew amazed comments from participants and glass professionals who were able to admire objects created two thousand years ago alongside the most current designs and innovative prototypes,

69 like those devised by the students of the Milan Polytechnic. With this exhibit, Vitrum wanted to focus attention on the productive, technological and cultural excellence associated with glass processing, always a core theme in events promoted by Vitrum”. Among the objects on display, the amphora with gladiator scene that dates back to the second century AD, was a show-stopper; its restoration was made possible thanks to support from Vitrum. How important is it to appreciate and safeguard the past? “The past is one of the most critical legacies for every individual, but the same is also true for industrial products. The history of glass processing is an extremely compelling topic and Vitrum wanted to spotlight it by placing it at the heart of the show, precisely because of the presence of this unique artifact. Vitrum, after all, has consistently promoted cultural initiatives alongside the show’s business aspects. The history of Vitrum bears out its dedication to this ideal. Nonetheless, in our daily relations with large industrial enterprises, we are equally aware of the substantial contribution technological advances in this industry make toward increasing the potential of glass as a material. Tradition and cutting-edge technology go hand-in-hand”.
N . 3 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
The amphora is now part of the permanent collection at the Alda Levi Antiquarium in Milan (see the article in Glass in IT style No. 34 September 2015). Can we expect exhibitors and the public will have the opportunity to freely explore some other culturally-significant events at the 20th edition of Vitrum? “We began work on the 2017 edition in October, as soon as the 19th Vitrum closed. We have set the bar higher than ever, projecting the show toward a future that involves not only industry specialists and end users, but also the trade professionals and businesses that orbit around the world of glass. We are working in close partnership with institutions, trade associations, universities and research centers so that Vitrum – through cultural events and special initiatives – can acquire even greater substance and value internationally. Our experience so far shows how partnerships between the various actors in the world of glass can lead to

a greater overall enrichment of the contents. In view of new ventures that could bear amazing fruit during the course of the forthcoming Vitrum, our relationships with the AIHV committee, and with the Office of the Archaeological Heritage of Lombardy are ongoing. And we are also strengthening and building more active relationships with the leading trade associations. Partnering with universities of the stature of the Milan Polytechnic is a constant. Thanks to Vitrum, the prototype for the Flow lamp, designed by students at the Polytechnic University of Milan will, in all likelihood, be manufactured and sold. In addition, the workshop organized last year in May, in partnership with the University of Freiburg, laid the foundation for many projects that, perhaps in the not-too-distant future, could take concrete shape.

fter its successful debut in 2015, AGC Asahi Glass participated again this year in the Salone del Mobile Milano with another breathtaking installation. “Amorphous” picks up on the theme introduced with “Glacier Formation” (read the article and watch the video in Glass in IT style n. 31 - April 2015), in which signature design joins cutting edge glass industry technology to breathe life into a strikingly spellbinding concept. Through a complex interplay of transparencies and light, “Amorphous” recreates the innermost essence of glass, composed of about 5,000 fragments of thin glass, chemically tempered using exclusive Dragontrail technology by AGC.

Interview with Junko Konishi - AGC Asahi Glass, Eisuke Tachikawa and Izumi Okayas - Nosigner
The spectator is drawn into a constantly changing molecular structure, magnified one billion times – a complex microcosm that is specific to glass but that is, of course, not visible to the naked eye. At an exclusive press preview, we interviewed Junko Konishi Ph.D., Senior Researcher at Value Creation Group, New Product R&D Center, Technology General Division of AGC, and the two Nosigner designers, Eisuke Tachikawa and Izumi Okayas, who worked with AGC on the design and creation of “Amorphous”.
