his second half of the year comes in with some significant news for Italy’s glass machinery industry. GIMAV has a new leader, Aldo Faccenda, with many years on the Association’s Board of

Directors and now its President, following the tenure of Cinzia Schiatti in that office. But the spotlight is also on the second half of 2016 because in September and in October, its members will be the face of Made-in-Italy excellence at two of the most anxiously-awaited international trade show events: Glasstec and GlassBuild America. It is in Düsseldorf and in Las Vegas that Italian technological innovations dedicated to the processing of flat glass, hollow glass, accessories and special products will take center stage. And, this substantial online issue is dedicated to them, as is the printed special edition “Focus on Glasstec & GlassBuild America”, that will be distributed at the group stands at both shows to boost the Association’s visibility and international communications reach. A must-read, without a doubt, but in this issue you will also find interviews with Laura Travaglini of Confindustria, on the opportunities for industry firms contained in the free trade agreements; with Luciano Gambaro, president of Consorzio Promovetro, and with Maria Grazia Diani, president of the Italian National AIHV Committee that, with ICOM 2016 - after Vitrum 2015 - in Milan, once again brought the culture and history of glass into prominent focus. “A

s president of Gimav, I am committed to work harder than ever and put my expertise at the service of all members of this association, which has always made a difference”, said Aldo Faccenda regarding his recent election as leader of the Italian Association of manufacturers of machinery and accessories for glass processing. In fact, the annual Members’ Meeting voted to reappoint and elect new members of its Board of Directors this past June 15.

Gimav, a true reference Since 1980 Gimav has been the go-to partner of Italian companies in the sector, which have continuously innovated the highly specialized market of glass processing, a craft deeply rooted in the history and culture of our country. The number of new members (the association now has 70 registered members) and constant flow of membership applications prove it: “In spite of the unfavorable economic climate of the last few years, the sluggish growth still affecting some of the industry strategic markets

Experience and positions held

Aldo Faccenda served as vice-president of Gimav for 6 years. Faccenda is the director of Human Resources of a world-famous company, Bottero Spa, which will celebrate its 60th year in business next year, and is the only Italian machinery manufacturer operating in both the flat and hollow glass market sectors. This vast, diversified wealth ofe xperience is exactly what the new president intends to put at the service of the association.

(primarily Russia and Brazil, as confirmed by the last Italian glass industry data report published in 2016), and domestic market difficulties (which nonetheless started to show very encouraging signs of recovery in 2015), today - the new president argued - we can say that we have every chance to leverage our value”. “All of us Italian machine manufacturers are capable of overcoming any problem that physics and mechanical science can solve, and - he firmly stated - in my new position, I intend to use everything our companies excel at as leverage: innovating technology and processes to the highest possible level, providing flexible and timely

13 solutions for any production requirement, custom tailoring - in true Italian style - products and services to fit the needs of the most diversified global customer base”.

Active participation, winning score To enhance representation, the new Board of Directors of Gimav this year will further focus on participation of all associated member companies. “The flat glass, hollow glass, accessories and special products sectors - Faccenda points out - equally contribute to the winning score of Italian glass on the global marketplace. There are many long-established companies that smoothly transitioned into the second or third generation, as well as recently established companies in our association. All of them share the same goal: to ensure our machines set new standards for automation, and all-around performance in terms of productivity, environmental sustainability, process control, absolute precision of execution and final product quality”. That’s why the experience of representing an historical Italian company in the glass sector is bound to bolster the mission of Gimav’s new president: “Our sector tangibly helps uphold the leadership of Made-in-Italy machinery and equipment: serving as spokesperson for all member companies at institutional meetings is an honor, and a duty I intend to fulfill by helping establish in the field all the synergies required to consolidate the global image of the ‘Italian glass system’, both within and outside of Gimav”.

For machinery, products, and accessories for the processing of at glass in particular, international sales rose by 5.40%. The United States are the main outlet followed by Belgium which is the leading importer in the EU. Poland is third, increasing its imports, and with Germany holding on to its ranking despite a slight fall. Sales also fell to France, which dropped from 6th to 13th position. Overall, the European Union remains the largest market, whereas in the Middle East, imports by Saudi Arabia surged (rising from 26th to 8th position) and Oman climbed from 97th to 10th position. As already mentioned for the sector as a whole, for at glass also the most negative results were those posted on the Brazilian and Russian markets: the first falling from 1st to 6th while Russia fell from 5th to 38th.

Hollow glass exports rose by 4.01%. The European Union is Italy’s largest export market for hollow glass with France ranking first ahead of Poland, Germany, Croatia, and Spain. Once again the most significant results came from Turkey, which came first in the general ranking for hollow glass exports. Next was Mexico, rising significantly, while China maintained its third position.

the difficult economic situation. The stronger positive trend was underlined by a pickup in the domestic market, which was more sustained for the flat glass sector. This good result accompanies a significant growth in exports, accounting for 80% of total sales. It is the exports that lie behind the substance of this sector, which had already increased its sales at the very time when the recession was at its worst.

EU on the rise. Turkey’s chart-topping imports A detailed analysis shows a significant increase in exports to the NAFTA countries with a 58% gain, as a result of the initial pickup in the US economy but also because of sales to Mexico growing at a faster pace (up by 73.27%).

16 N . 3 9 J U LY 2 0 1 6

17 The European Union remains the main export market for these products which grew by 18.38%. As far as the non- EU countries are concerned, the most striking figure was definitely an increase in sales to Turkey, which topped the ranking of export markets. By contrast, exports to Brazil and Russia took a nosedive due to the socio-political and economic instability of the former and the geo-strategic political crisis in the latter with the controversial international sanctions that have been adopted.

Domestic Market: the new investment drive Greater positivity is being fueled by a turnaround in the negative trend on the domestic market, which has posted a significant increase in sales. This is definitely the result of economic incentives aimed at making Italian products more competitive on global markets. The Nuova Sabatini incentive has made it easier for companies to obtain loans in order to invest in new machinery, systems, and equipment while the Superammortamento incentive has increased the tax deduction for companies that buy or rent new machinery. These measures are proving to be effective and Italian companies are updating their machinery and systems to topnotch levels, as is required of a country that is always in the forefront in this industry. Overall, the figures indicate that the sector is going strong and strengthening its position on the industrial scene. As a result the estimates for 2016 are legitimately optimistic, especially for exports (which account for the largest share of company sales), and with the international situation expected to improve. The same favorable forecast on the domestic front comes from hopes that incentives for investments will be confirmed in the future. In conclusion, the Italian glass industry continues to shine and the traditional excellence of its glass processing machinery, products and accessories remains unparalleled worldwide.

GlassBuild America (October 19-21, Las Vegas). This has been a particularly intense tour de force for Italian companies belonging to the Gimav group because, as Director Laura Biason explains with a smile, “the dates of some of the most important exhibitions for the sector have been very close, even overlapping at times, requiring a significant commitment by our members, both in financial terms as well as the human resources invested to simultaneously oversee such diverse and distant locations”. “It should be said, however, that Gimav has always been willing and ready to participate”, continues Biason. “Historically focused on exports and therefore comprising brands that have longsince been widely recognized in the flat glass, hollow glass and accessories sector worldwide, our members continue to do their part, contributing to strengthening the Made-in-Italy technological advantage with their active participation in all the sector’s most strategic international events, partaking independently but, above all, within the groups organized by the association. And we’re very proud of this”.

Even more united in Düsseldorf he Glasstec trade show, alternating with Vitrum in odd years, is one of the most anticipated events in the world. “In fact - stresses Biason - it’s actually the exhibition heart of the European market. We have an increasing number of companies, in both the flat glass and hollow glass sectors, as well as manufacturers of accessories and special glass processing parts, that attend Glasstec (just like Vitrum) to launch absolute previews and completely new hi-tech solutions. Fairs with a highly international reach like the ones in Düsseldorf and Milan are still the most sought-after showcases for presenting the latest innovations, but also for discovering the up-andcoming trends of the near future”.

Europe looks to Italy. And vice versa There are 54 Gimav member companies participating in Glasstec 2016. In the Italy Pavilion, number 16, you’ll find Gimav’s stand and those of most of the members of the Flat Glass and Accessories sector (47 companies represented in an area of over 9,100 square meters). The main exhibitors of the Italian Hollow Glass sector (7 companies) will be located in Pavilion number 13 with an exhibition area of 1,039 m2. “I’m certain this year’s show will be a true launching pad for our members”, says Laura Biason. “We’ll be even more united and cohesive, perfectly aware of the undisputed val-

ue of our know-how backed by the sector’s new numbers”. In fact, the latest Industry Report presented at the members’ annual meeting last June indicates that the European market is still the mainstay of our future. The EU is solidly in the lead again in 2015 as the destination area for the sector’s exports, with sales increasing by as much as 18.38% in absolute value. “But we won’t stop there”, adds the Director. “Meeting at Glasstec means sharing and planning our next strategies that must look well beyond the borders of Europe and cannot ignore the incredible speed of today’s technological evolution”. This is why the sector’s two key events in the European area, Glasstec and Vitrum, are the “showcases that allow us to stay up to date and in line with innovation in the glass world” stresses Biason. “Constant updating for trade professionals is a must that cannot be delayed by waiting 24 months between events. That’s why we have the concerted action that the Glasstec and Vitrum organizations have successfully consolidated over the years, to the distinct advantage of both events and, more importantly, all the exhibiting companies in Düsseldorf and Milan who will be presenting the best automation and mechanics of the sector. And yet we mustn’t forget the importance of Made-in- Italy, even under this aspect. New markets are awaiting the Italian technological contribution, which we’ll be showcasing in Düsseldorf this year”, she concludes. (C.M.)

or the first time this year Gimav will be participating with its group of member companies in the Las Vegas edition of GlassBuild America on October 19 - 21. “In constant and continuous growth, GlassBuild America has indeed become an essential milestone for our industry”, confirms Gimav Director Laura Biason. “In fact, this year we’ve even decided to attend the American event held in even years in Nevada”. And our participation will be substantial, with a group of 16 Italian exhibitors under the association. The Italy Pavilion inside the Las Vegas Convention Center will have 612 square meters of dedicated exhibition area. The event, with an average of 423 exhibitors per edition providing extensive coverage of production, distribution, manufacturing and retail sales of flat glass, windows and glass doors, represents the sector’s most important US fair. In fact, the exhibition area even had to be expanded this year due to the growing number of exhibitors. “And this is a bid we couldn’t pass up; in fact, we intend to raise it by demonstrating that even on the other side of the world our Made-in-Italy innovations in the glass arena can make all the difference”, summarizes Laura Biason.

GlassBuild America 2015 (Atlanta)

Historically, the United States is the country contributing the most to Italy’s trade surplus (mainly machinery, vehicles, personal fashion products, agricultural and food products). And even Italian investments in the United States are led by the retail, industrial machinery, automotive, logistics and aerospace sectors. Therefore while expectations are focused on the opportunities that could arise from the finalization of the TTIP - the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the EU which would lead to the reduction of tariffs as well as harmonization of standards, particularly those concerning new technologies - the glass machinery industry posted significant numbers for transatlantic relations last year. In fact, the United States climbed to second place among the importers of Italian glass processing machinery and accessories (from 5th place in 2014), with a share of almost 15% for flat glass (classifying as top importing country) and almost 13% for hollow glass, growing almost 118% over the 2014 value (Source: Gimav 2016 processing of Istat data). Positive outlook on Glasstec, but with a close eye on political developments ADI Industrial Diamond Application is maintaining a very positive outlook toward Glasstec because “I see ongoing development in the glass sector”, remarks CEO Dino Zandonella Necca. “I believe it will be a positive show”, he states, emphasizing that at this moment in time it is not the fundamentals of the European economy, but rather “political turmoil that causes problems”. Uncertainties about how the next half with play out are driven by the “condition Russia is in, because the embargo has damaged business, and by the turmoil surrounding Brexit. We have finally reopened the door to Iran, a country with 80 million inhabitants, and closed that with Russia and its 160 million inhabitants. Unbelievable how that works, now that the pendulum of economic dynamics is swinging back toward Europe”, concludes the CEO.

GlassBuild America, held in alternating years in Las Vegas, “is growing considerably, a pivotal reference not only for the United States and Canada, but also for Mexico and Latin America”. The CEO of ADI Industrial Diamond Application, Dino Zandonella Necca, leads with this premise regarding the October trade show to emphasize the positive economic climate that is building overseas. The point is that this favorable condition “will now have to come to terms with the unknown outcome of the presidential election this year and the candidates in the race, who are quite dissimilar. The outcome will make a serious difference, and the economy will definitely be impacted, first by the run up and then by the results of the election”, he adds. Europe and America are now living under similar conditions, “influenced more by politics than by the dynamics of trade”.

High performance for the UHS series As a result of this commitment to R&D, ADI filed several patents, specifically for high-end technology users like the automotive and solar industries. ADI developed two new high-performance bonds as part of the UHS family: the L96T and L97T. These bonds are specifically engineered to reduce hidden costs that are often the culprit behind a lack of profitability. They provide immediate start-up; less waste; longer profile retention; longer life; and reduced dressing process. The three newly-patented products offered by ADI are: the new generation of resin and metal bonded wheels employed in a patented seaming wheel system called Wet; a special one-step router for the mass production of shower doors on CNC machines.

Moreover, some dynamics lead us to believe that this increase, unlike previous years, should not be attributed to a temporary rebound but is actually a structural, albeit limited, growth”. In short, these markets are on the mend, becoming stronger, and Bottero will be exhibiting at Glasstec as an up-andcoming world-class player celebrating its 60th anniversary next year. (A.L.)

Bottero’s expectations for the GlassBuild America event are indeed high, with the help of the American market which “has successfully recovered from the crisis. Not only do we expect to see a remarkable attendance, but also peaked interest”, says Gianluca Ceriani, Americas Regional Manager of Bottero, represented locally by its North Carolina branch. “A presence which we are also updating continues the manager - to meet increasing demands for automation of flat glass processing lines”. The United States, in particular, is characterized by “new investments of modest value.” For now the market seems to be unaffected by the upcoming November elections. “Usually the elections influence the market in one way or the other - notes Ceriani - but the American economic situation is such that, at least by all appearances, it seems it can continue undeterred”. The most recent Vitrum and China Glass 2016 events confirmed that both in Europe and around the world the cutting edge of the ‘Glass’ industry is still the ‘made in Italy’ brand, not as much in Italy as abroad and to an even greater extent overseas (Americas and Asia) than in the ‘old world’. However, unfortunately, participation in these trade shows is increasingly costintensive and the trend is to find new channels of communication: seminars, on-site meetings, open houses, video conferences, etc. Technology is a great tool but human contact is still invaluable. Europe is fundamental for our company because it includes some of our top markets: first and foremost, Spain, Germany, and the UK. Germany and Austria continue to be one of our most favorable sales channels”.

Glass, increasingly used The North American for interior furnishings market trends “At the previous Glasstec and Vitrum events, we had already noticed a spike in demand and customer awareness of decorative glass, which is increasingly being used as an alternative material for interior furnishings. We therefore expect this trend to be confirmed at the next Glasstec expo in Düsseldorf, bolstered by the many years of experience that make Cefla a world-leading manufacturer of machinery and systems for coatings and decorative finishes”.

“Our clients give us a clear view of the trends currently shaping the North American glass market. Foremost among them is demand for satin finishes, which can either be painted on the glass or obtained through other finishing processes, and for special effects, by which bright colors and specific finishes are applied to the glass. Another rising trend regards small and medium sized companies, which are buying machinery to apply the required coatings “in house”, rather than relying on outside suppliers. With the most innovative solutions for creating special effects and unique finishes, Cefla continues to answer the ever-changing demands of the glass market, help customers achieve excellence in quality, and speed-up their production”.

robotic island, made up of two edgers and two anthropomorphic robots: this is the cutting edge design - unique in the world - that Elettromeccanica Bovone introduced at Glasstec. The same concept will be on display at GlassBuild America, but in a slightly more streamlined version.

Integration with existing systems The basic innovation in this idea from Bovone is the successful integration created between existing robots available on the market and the company’s own grinding machines, to create a solution - the robotic island - that automates a key phase in processing large-sized glass sheets and, as a result, increases the level of safety in the workplace because it eliminates the need for an operator to move the glass sheet. USA: a sensational first half

Hopes for Glasstec 2016: “We would like to see a change in the situation, because right now Europe is not at all a lively market”, according to Federica Bovone of Elettromeccanica Bovone, a current leader in automation systems for glass processing, thanks to the integration of edgers and robots. “No doubt, attendance will be good - predicts the businesswoman - but how negotiations will go is unforeseeable. In fact, writing contracts at trade shows is increasingly rare; participation is more focused on strengthening relationships or making new contacts”. Europe accounts for about 35-40% of Elettromeccanica Bovone’s turnover. “The situation is quite patchy - she continues - Spain is recovering, in Great Britain and Germany investments are primarily going to large groups, Poland is quite active. Instead, the Russian market remains static”. In Italy “things are picking up”.

“The first half of 2016 was outstanding” in the United States. This is how Federica Bovone of Elettromeccanica Bovone, a current leader in automation systems for glass processing, thanks to the integration of edgers and robots, sums up the company’s performance in the US market this year. “Up until now it has been a growthoriented country, one in which a significant role was played by industrial policies aimed at making foreign investments on US soil very appetizing”. As far as the second half is concerned, Elettromeccanica Bovone emphasizes the air of expectation already evident in view of the presidential election in November: “Predictably, leading up to that there could be a slowdown in investments - she explains - and then, we will need to understand how the economy will interpret the input from the new president”.

49 robots on an island that cannot be accessed when the machines are in operation.

Ongoing evolution Developed two years ago, this island is constantly evolving, as will be apparent with the advances on display at the forthcoming trade shows, both in terms of the integration between edging machines and robots and in terms of speed of operation, which depends on the robot’s work cycle. Bovone has a lineup of edging machines fitted with 10 to 17 motors and the island can be created with each and every one of these machines. Each island is customized, that is: designed to meet the needs of the customer, combining the most suitable edgers with the robots.

Edgers and robots The edging machines are equipped with a gripper, engineered to reduce both weight and footprint, thus boosting performance and saving time and energy during the work cycle: up to 25% less compared to similar equipment. If the complete island is the most thorough system, Bovone also came up with a gradual process of automation with the integration of robots on machines already in use. Elettromeccanica Bovone, in fact, has its own software division that is capable of adapting pre-existing systems.

FOCUS ON GLASSTEC & GLASSBUILD AMERICA The new Master generation Another highlight on Intermac’s stand will certainly be the launch of the Master CNC, the new generation of work centers. These machines will consolidate and confirm Intermac’s leading role in the future of this technology. The most surprising innovation of the new range of machines is in the software. Developed completely by BiesseSoft, the Biesse Group’s software house, bSolid has a truly innovative approach to programming that allows complete control of the production cycle, a drastic reduction in human errors and maximum reuse of any work project with parameterization of the projects and processing. The idea of the Master work centers is to place the operator at the center of the machine’s design, offering improved comfort and technology. Along with these two primary innovations there’ll be a vast representation of the entire Intermac product line, which ranges from cutting systems to waterjets, double edgers, work centers, vertical machines up to the tools themselves through its sister company Diamut.

Glasstec: an iconic event that attracts interested buyers

GlassBuild America: a not-to-miss appointment with great potential

“Historically the German event attracts a good number of visitors, who always show considerable interest. Two years ago, when the effects of the crisis began to fade with the rise of the first signs of recovery, attendance at Glasstec was remarkable, and many leads turned into business, so we expect this year’s results to be equal or even better, considering that the situation of the global economy is getting back on track. In general, market trends are still swinging, and some European countries, such as Spain, England and France, are showing clear signs of recovery. Italy is among them, but unfortunately some differences persist: the situation in the North is more dynamic, with some companies making investments, while the Southern market is comparatively stagnant”.

“We have always attended the expo, and chose to do it again this year, to present our most remarkable machinery. GlassBuild America is an ideal event for meeting American clients, who usually do not go out of their way to attend European expos, particularly Vitrum and Glasstec. The American market is very active, and certainly one of the most dynamic right now, so we expect our attendance at GlassBuild to yield valuable results, both in terms of strengthening our relationship with historical customers, and exploring additional business opportunities. In 2015 O. M. Schiatti Angelo achieved great results in the American market. Sales rose by approx. 50% and have continued growing in 2016. We have many contacts and hope to continue receiving the same positive feedback in the next few months”.

acked by 64 years of success, Triulzi - Tc Special Equipments is recognized as an international leader in the design and manufacturing of horizontal and vertical washers and driers for glass sheets - from mini model to jumbo glass - automatic insulating glass lines, automatic laminated glass lines, wet powdering units and automatic etching lines. One of its most noteworthy products, the groundbreaking glass sheet washing line with ultrasonic bath immersion, is in high demand for the automotive sector. “This washing line prepares the sheets in an ultrasonic bath - explains Roberta Triulzi, the company’s Sales Manager - which uses ultrasonic waves to remove any

Perfect powdering lines for the automotive sector Another vanguard product is the glass sheet powdering line for windshield production with high-performance wet powdering system. “The glass is first heated and then powdered - continues Roberta Triulzi - to ensure a more uniform distribution of the non-stick coating on the glass surface before the bending process”.

Cristal Mundus Glass Washer and Fire Proof Another remarkable example of the company’s innovative know-how is the Cristal Mundus Glass Washer, a horizontal washer with flat upper and lower brush units which can process glass as thin as 1 mm. This model goes hand in hand with Fire Proof, the new vertical washer for fireproof glass with automatic suction, designed to automatically remove foam from the four edges of the glass sheet.

67 INTERVIEW WITH ROBERTA TRIULZI, SALES MANAGER AT TC SPECIAL EQUIPMENTS

In Düsseldorf to confirm a success that began in 1952 Triulzi - Tc Special Equipments’ participation in Glasstec is important because it focuses the customers’ attention on the entire range of machines successfully produced by the company since as far back as 1952 for a wide variety of sectors: from construction to home furnishing, solar energy to automotive, insulating glass and laminated glass production, automated plants for acid etching and powder application in the automotive sector. The flagship product being exhibited in Düsseldorf is the fireproof glass washing line that silently removes any excess gel spread on the glass surface (in order to make it completely fireproof). The gel is removed by a completely automatic suction of the four sides of the glass sheet with numerical control and a touchscreen operator panel.

High demand for ultrasonic washing lines in North America Triulzi - TC Special Equipments will be present at the October 2016 event with GlassBuild America, with its own information stand. “This appointment is just as important for us as Glasstec in Germany - explains Roberta Triulzi - since it’s an opportunity to meet American customers who won’t be attending Düsseldorf. Our outlook on the North American market is positive. In fact, just recently Triulzi - Tc Special Equipments acquired important orders for plants with ultrasonic wash and more”.

ompanies associated with Gimav historically operate in a niche, export-oriented market. Most are small or medium sized companies that already achieved great milestones “by themselves”. But which means of leverage can be used to boost the entrepreneurs’ awareness of free trade agreement opportunities? This and other questions were answered by Laura Travaglini of Confindustria Europe and Internationalization department, who served as a speaker at the seminar organized by the Association last May, titled “Free Trade Agreements: operational analysis and opportunities for export companies”.

Knowledge helps “The shift in geo-economic balance - Travaglini explains -in the last few years has made it crucial for our companies to look at foreign markets. However, export activities are extremely complex, and require being aware of opportunities in different markets, but most of all knowing the rules that govern access to them”. “Increasingly often, great foreign market opportunities are subject to restrictive access measures, such as higher import duties and/or the so-called non-tariff barriers. In this complex and unstable scenario it seems indispensable for companies to know which free trade agreements they can use as ‘fast track lanes’ to access foreign markets, and which agreements the EU is negotiating or getting ready to negotiate”.

Strengthening market competencies “Companies in the glass processing sector are strongly export-oriented, and to a great extent, already

Glass: immediate advantages

“The cross-analysis of target-country customs profiles and glass market products - says Laura Travaglini - reveals interesting data on the immediate advantages for companies in the glass sector. Brazil and India, with protectionist profiles, are among the markets where EU exporters of glass processing machinery would gain the most, as liberalization would lower tariffs, which currently are as high as 14% in Brazil and 10% in India”. “Vietnam will clearly benefit a few specific types of products (specifically grinders - customs code 680422909), currently subject to a 20% tariff. Less would be gained in Thailand and Indonesia, due to the low level of protection on glass processing products (tariffs are about 5% on average). The sector stands to gain close or next to nothing instead in the Philippines and Malaysia, where tariffs currently average 1% and 0% respectively”. But the advantages tied to the reduction or abolition of tariffs only give a partial view of the benefits free trade agreements can provide. “In fact - Travaglini explains - the agreements negotiated by the EU with third countries have a very wide scope of application: from tenders for services and public works, to investments and intellectual property protection. They are meant to deepen the economic integration of the areas in question and create favorable conditions from any business standpoint. Lastly the most important benefits are those pertaining to the reduction of non-tariff trade barriers, which often cost companies much more than the applicable tariffs”.

71 Meetings, projects and the roadshow

The meeting organized by Gimav significantly highlights the attention that companies are paying to trade policies. Confindustria has always ensured active and constant dialogue with all associates in its network, both through electronic platforms and by partnering with the associations on projects, also targeted to educate companies. Recent examples of these are the “Internationalization Roadshow” project carried out by Confindustria in partnership with the ITA Agency, and other private and public institutions, and “Fast Export”, a project launched in March 2016 with 40 meetings to be held across Italy to further explore customs duty simplification topics.

ell- w established in foreign markets. Nonetheless, the ever-shifting nature of their global operational context requires them to keep improving their market competencies, and pay a great deal of attention to innovation processes, an aspect inextricably tied to the high quality of “Made in Italy”, which has always been a major selling point for our products. Other very important operational aspects are also bound to play an increasingly strategic role in ensuring the competitiveness of our companies. A significant example of these is the 1 May 2016 entry into force of new European Union Customs Code, which actually simplifies many trade regulations and customs procedures. The ability to avail themselves of these simplified procedures, as an Authorized Economic Operator (Aeo), will certainly provide a competitive advantage by which, in combination with more skilled and competent personnel in their internationalization departments, our companies may play a greater role and strengthen their presence abroad”.

Target Countries for the glass market “The European Union has long been carrying out a diversified trade strategy, based on both the geographical location and the level of development of target Countries. Agreements with the United States and Japan are among the most important being negotiated right now. In both cases, the greatest advantage European companies will gain in relation to the markets liberalization will not come from a reduction in tariffs - given the currently low level of tariffs protection - but from more cohesive standards and technical regulations and, with specific regard to Japan, from the removal of non-tariff barriers. Other target Countries the EU is currently or about to start negotiating free-trade agreements with are in South-East Asia”. Negotiations may soon begin with Indonesia and the Philippines, while in the mid-term we may witness the conclusion of negotiations already in course with Malesia and Thailand. In addition to these, in December 2015 the EU also concluded negotiations with Vietnam, and it is hoped that negotiations with India, another important strategic priority, will resume. “Negotiations with Brazil are also on the agenda, based on the dual perspective of restarting negotiations with Mercosur, or undertake the complex route of individual negotiation with the country”, concludes Laura Travaglini.

Despite the difficulties faced in the new millennium, starting in 2000 many new glassworks were established: nearly onethird of the current total. The historic glassworks, created in the first half of the last century or during the 1800s, are now a minority.

Can you tell us how the “Vetro Artistico Murano” brand of certified origin is doing?

“It has been 14 years since it was launched and, despite the difficulties in procuring financing to reinvest in the brand, this certification has proven its fundamental value over time. It is a specific, effective methodology that protects not only the manufacturers but also the end consumers, who can clearly understand if the product they are interested in is an original or not”.

Access to credit is a problem; what can be done?

““For the Muranese glassmaking community this is an issue that has already been set aside. To contain the problem, we had to tighten our belts and not just a little bit, making considerable cuts wherever possible. Now it looks to me like the real problems stayed at the banks. In any case, we hope that in the not-toodistant future the lending institutions will get back to doing their jobs, understanding the specific nature of the area and helping deserving producers to grow”.

77

150 glass companies located on Murano 1/3 of the total of businesses was established after the year 2000 What’s the future for this industry?

“Once, the main problem was simply to produce and produce well. What was produced - by small artisans to midsized businesses - generally was sold without much difficulty. I can also say that, during the 1960s and ‘70s, demand was greater than supply. Currently the situation is reversed and serious issues regarding marketing have arisen. Today, being creative is not enough; more than anything, you need to be able to sell, applying the most innovative marketing tools available. We have begun doing that, but we were late to the starting gate. The difficulty for Murano is that it needs to evolve, but without straying too far from tradition. With the arrival in the marketplace of new cultures from foreign countries, we must compete with new points of view, quite unlike our own, and we need to learn to develop customized solutions for each of them”.

Any signs pointing to success?

“We would like to foster a greater sense of partnership between the institutions and the businesses of Murano. The historical-cultural uniqueness of our island is unrivalled anywhere else in the world. There is not another Murano anywhere on the globe”.

Culture, communities and... In Milan, glass again holds star status ARTICLE

“G

lass museums and cultural landscapes” and “Cooperation and sharing in decorative arts” are the two work sessions in which ICOM Glass and the Italian National AIHV (International Association of the History of Glass) Committee engaged a powerful group of curators of collections of glass and ceramics from around the world for ICOM 2016. Excursions to various locations to view precious and at times even unknown collections of works in glass formed an integral and extremely meaningful part of the program during the week in which the 24th edition of the ICOM general conference took place in Milan (July 3-9).

Two work sessions at ICOM Glass, organized with the participation of the Italian National AIHV Committee N . 3 9 J U LY 2 0 1 6

“The visits were the focus of the glass museum experts during the event”, explain Teresa Medici, secretary of ICOM Glass, and Maria Grazia Diani, president of the Italian National AIHV Committee, since these are “prestigious collections, and in some cases, also collections that are not typically on view or shows that were organized because they would coincide with this event”. In Milan, the group of 25 experts from many countries, including Brazil, the US, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, and Guatemala visited the glass collections at the Poldi Pezzoli and Bagatti Valsecchi Museums and “The Animals of Murano” exhibit at the Natural History Museum; the D’Annunzio glass at the Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera; and then the group of experts had the opportunity to visit collections in Brescia, Turin and at the Visconti Castle in Pavia. It is quite fascinating - as pointed out in some of the presentations during the first session - how cultural landscapes have grown up around glass, with the development of towns and cities. “It happened, for example, at La Granja in Spain, in the province of Segovia, where the town expanded in the 18th century around the royal glass factory that produced large sheets of glass for the mirrors at court”, remarks Medici. The second session, summarizes Diani, was a “valuable networking opportunity for experts in glass and ceramics, two museum sections that are often connected”. We should recall that in 2015, the Italian National AIHV

ICOM General Conference for the second time in Milan From July 3rd to 9th in Milan, 3,000 museum professionals from around the globe had the opportunity to make new contacts, exchange ideas and discuss topics of interest at ICOM 2016. This is the second time in its 70-year history that the assembly has made its way to Italy and Milan. Founded in 1946, ICOM is a non-profit NGO with formal ties to UNESCO that brings together 30,000 members from 5 continents. It is made up of national committees - ICOM Italia is the primary professional association for the museum sector - and approximately 30 International Alliances tied to specific themes and materials, like ICOM Glass. The main theme of the 24th ICOM General Conference was “Museums and cultural landscapes” and the relationship between the two. A pivotal question for Italy (in 2011 the census reported 4,588 museums or similar institutes), but also “a strategic perspective for the museums of the third millennium around the world”. ICOM 2016 examined the issue by asking two questions: to what extent should museums, especially those whose collections are linked to their locations, take the role as interpretation center for the place and the community they belong to and how can museums disseminate the knowledge of the cultural heritage conserved both inside and outside their walls.

Committee supervised the restoration - curated by the Soprintendenza Archeologia della Lombardia and made possible thanks to the support of Vitrum - of the ancient amphora with gladiator scene exhibited during the 19th edition of Vitrum, Italy’s International Trade Show dedicated to the world of glass, held in Milan. The treasured piece is now part of a permanent exhibit at the Antiquarium Alda Levi, also in Milan.
