After Atlanta, it’s Vitrum’s time to shine: the countdown has begun Vitrum celebrates its twentieth edition. October 3rd to 6th Milan becomes the House of Glass. First, though, in September, the cream of Italy’s glass industry will exhibit their top Italianmade technologies at GlassBuild America, in Atlanta

V

itrum’s moment has arrived. The 20th edition of the show is ready to open its doors. The organizational team’s energetic efforts during the two years since the last Vitrum were focused on making

sure the Italian event is one nobody wants to miss. And the registration data, meetings and partnerships that add value to the European glass industry appointment of 2017 all testify to their success. On the pages of this issue, a generous amount of space is given to the dedicated special (including the videos filmed during the two-day International Convention of Glass Industry Associations in Murano) and to the Dossiers of the companies participating in Vitrum and in GlassBuild America. The special edition of Glass in IT style - in its print version - will go along with the Italian glass machinery group delegation to Atlanta in September. But, it is also time to look at the data: GIMAV has just released the official 2016 figures for Italy’s glass industry. In this issue, you will find a summary of the data for key market areas. For all the details in full, please visit the Association’s website. Recently, Glass in IT style also participated in the CMS Open House: the article is in the “Players” section. And, a must-mention, the winners of the Verallia Design Award were recently announced (the video interviews are in the magazine and on the Glass in IT style website). Finally, you will be surprised to discover the new identity of security doors that, thanks to glass, express vivid personality and embody a perfectly Italian-style concept of living: you can find the article in the “Made-in-Italy Highlights” section. Enjoy the read!

T

he last survey by the Study Center of Gimav revealed that 2016 was another year of recovery for the Italian industry of glass processing machinery, systems, accessories and special products, made even more significant by the 2017 forecast for further growth

The results are confirmed by Gimav’s statistics in its Industry Report entitled “The Italian industry of glass processing machinery, systems, accessories and special products in 2016”, disclosed on June 30th 2017 N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

in terms of sales, and stability in terms of exports and the domestic market. For the seventh consecutive year, the Italian glass (Flat and Hollow) machinery industry remained on a positive growth trend.

Flat and Hollow glass: sales on the up and trade balance back to 2008 levels In 2016 overall sales increased by 5.09% from 2015. Flat Glass recorded outstanding growth, and was up 7.25% from the year before (when it rose by 6.7% from 2014),

N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

while Hollow Glass remained on the positive side with a 1.05% increase, despite a slight decrease vs the previous year, when it rose by 3% over 2014. Interestingly, the trade balance reached 947 million Euros, a 6.63% increase from 2015. “This indicator - state Gimav’s top executives Aldo Faccenda (President) and Laura Biason (Director) - clearly highlights this sector’s uncanny ability to rebound from the effects of the economic-financial crisis that plagued the world, and long lingered in Italy”. “Today, at least for the glass machinery sector, we can say the crisis is over. The numbers show we are back where we were in 2008, and we are extremely pleased by it”.

Imports: Italian market bets on Italian-made machinery

Imports were 7% lower than in 2015 (when they decreased from 2014). Respectively, imports of Flat Glass plummeted (-37.22%), and Hollow Glass imports also decreased, but not as drastically. “This overall trend indicator - President Faccenda points out - highlights another important aspect: the domestic market clearly prefers Italian-made machinery”. The top 5 ranking countries for exports of glass processing machinery to Italy are Belgium (still at #1 although sales dropped sharply), France, Croatia (on the up), the United States (with on overall share of 7.5%), and Germany (in spite of a substantial reduction in sales to Italy). We should also note that our imports from China decreased by 19.29%, even though it remains in 8th place.

13

Exports: +5.39%. USA is the #1 customer. China jumps to 4th place in the ranking Historically, exports have been the crowning jewel of the Italian glass machinery industry. In 2016 exports increased by 5.39% overall, with Flat Glass soaring by 7.93%, and Hollow Glass by 1.21%. The European Union remained the primary export destination for Italian glass processing machinery, accessories and special products, with a 43% share of global market sales, while exports to extra-EU countries decreased. The sales trend for North America recorded remarkable growth (over 45%), making the United States the #1 customer of Italian manufacturers (with 10.75% overall share, nearly 18% for Flat Glass), followed by Mexico

N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

(which ranks at #1 for Hollow Glass, with an exports share of nearly 12%), China, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. With regard to Flat Glass, the rankings by share of Italian exports shows a drastic improvement for China, which ranked 46 th in 2015, and climbed to #4 in just one year. Still with regard to exports, we should mention two countries which - although strategically important and “dear to the Italian manufacturers in the sector - in the last few years have been severely affected by economic-political instability, and are now showing interesting signs of recovery: Russia (which climbed from

I feel it is my duty to express the wishes of everyone in the Italian glass industry. The Italian government incentives for machinery upgrades had an immediate, valuable effect on the domestic market, and also revitalized machinery manufacturing companies. And now, therefore, we stand united in asking our government to consider extending the incentives validity period, or at least extend the delivery deadlines beyond July 2018. A 7 month delivery window (December 2017 is the deadline for orders) is too tight for complex, highly customized and technologically advanced products, such as glass processing machinery. We intend to build a strong case and present it to government policy makers, thereby meeting the actual needs of the Italian market, and especially the needs of our industry. We are keenly aware of our importance as “drivers of knowledge and technology in the glass market. Allowing our client companies to fully exploit this know-know effectively gives the sector, and our entire national economy, a huge competitive advantage.

20th place to 10 th in 2016) and Brazil (in 12 th place, with a 2.42% share). Another step forward for Australia as well, which now holds a 2.25% share of overall exports, becoming the 13 th largest importer of made-in-Italy machinery.

“I

t’s happening and this is the place to be”. This is how Dino Zandonella Necca, president of Vitrum, introduces the 20th edition of Italy’s international trade show specialized in glass processing machinery, equipment iera and special products. In fact, from October 3rd to 6th, at F Milano Rho, the curtain will again go up on one of the industry’s most highly-anticipated events. Vitrum continues to be one of the leading international trade shows dedicated to the world of glass and, along with Glasstec in the even-numbered years, is the European place to be, bar none.

Integration, content and partnerships: these are the core concepts around which Italy’s international trade show specialized in glass processing machinery, accessories and special products N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

19

“Twenty years - points out Zandonella Necca - mark a s ignificant milestone and sum up nicely the technological contributions our country has made to this specific area of the industrial machinery sector. Indeed, Italy’s place is firmly e stablished on the podium as a manufacturing power and as an expression of high-tech advancements in glass processing. But this year, to effectively respond to new market demands, we decided to add a new dimension to the event”. Therefore, it is not a mere exhibition of machinery and products but, “the actual expression of that across-the-board need for integration called for by the 4th industrial revolution”, the president explains. “Above all - adds Zandonella Necca - integration between stakeholders. The need for this, and the importance of it, were made clear at the first International Convention of Glass Industry Associations in Murano. However, what Vitrum 2017 aims to be, above all else, is the concrete answer to the demand for services by all industry players”. “Partnerships and content - continues Zandonella Necca are, therefore, the cornerstones of a show that has given itself a complete makeover. The common thread that links the dis-

plays, the seminars, the show itself, and the meetings is the intention to provide timely answers to all glass industry stakeholders on the hottest topics revolving around the economy and the industry”. A fitting addition to this scenario is also the special attention that Vitrum 2017 will focus on the incentives and tools the Italian government has made available to businesses for the modernization of their machine inventories. “The show offers a powerful opportunity to gain a better understanding - adds Zandonella Necca - in terms of its compelling relevance to the current situation in Italy”. Of course, the program for the four-day Milan fair also includes round tables and technical meetings, by and for indus-

October 4th at Vitrum - the first operations meeting of the International Convention of Glass Industry Associations

“I am extremely pleased with the way the two-day meeting in Murano turned out”. Dino Zandonella Necca has no doubts about the results of the Convention organized by Vitrum, with the support of ITA (Italian Trade Agency). For the first time ever, on June 21st and 22nd, delegations from the international glass industry associations came together to share their needs and ideas, as well as the problems faced by their respective countries: Italy, Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Poland, Russia, Brazil, Slovakia, the US and Australia. “There was no lack of realistic ideas and dynamic case histories - he concludes - but the time has come to take action. The delegates showed a keen interest in the Italian business model, both as a trade show and as an association, and this was a source of real satisfaction. Therefore, the time has come to begin focusing on our objectives: one more reason to be sure not to miss out on Vitrum”.

21 try professionals, that will focus specifically on the SuperAmmortamento and IperAmmortamento programs, the two pivotal tools that are driving new, encouraging life blood through the veins of Italian manufacturing. “The updating of plants, systems and machinery is a genuine need in our country - remarks the Vitrum president - especially considering the lengthy period in which the vise grip of the global economic crisis kept Italian companies from investing in capital goods. Now that current economic data indicate it is time to put the lengthy crisis behind us, we at Vitrum also feel it is our duty to leverage these opportunities to contribute to the recovery of the domestic market and the competitive comeback of all companies on a global scale”. But the spirit of Vitrum has consistently been committed to its international reach. “And, at this edition as well - emphasizes Zandonella Necca - the involvement and support of ITA (Italian Trade Agency) have allowed, and still afford us, even greater possibilities to cater more effectively to the needs of overseas exhibitors and visitors. Starting with the thorough, widespread promotion of the show on an international scale, up to and including the organizational outreach to the incoming participants. During the fair, a total of 109 delegates from 12 different countries from around the globe will converge in Milan, all of them top trade professionals in the areas of flat and hollow glass. The allure of technology and innovation in the field of glass is still the real true drawing card of the international trade show in Milan which, in perfect Italian style, will once again stand out in the global arena”.

Around THIRTY COMPANIES requested LARGER EXHIBIT SPACE than they had in 2015 and 44 KEPT THE SAME SIZE as at the previous edition. Thanks to the support of ITA (Italian Trade Agency), the delegation of incoming trade professionals, organized by Vitrum, is massive: 109 DELEGATES from 12 different countries, representing the leading industry professionals in both flat and hollow glass. “We like to view this year’s edition as a new beginning explains Laura Biason, director of Vitrum - a new point of departure upon which we plan to build a journey that validates Italy’s international glass industry trade show as an absolute leader in global glass industry events. This is why Vitrum 2017 is not only an opportunity to display products and preview innovations in technologies for glass processing machinery, accessories and special products, but it is also the forum where industry leaders and buyers can meet and comparison-shop. And - last but not least - a place for professional updating and sharing the know-how and skills that give Italy’s glass sector a reputation for excellence on a global scale”. “The allure of Vitrum 2017 - emphasizes the director - drew a host of prestigious domestic and international delegations. A clear indicator that the Italian event is always high on the list of priorities and that the market - both domestically and internationally - is unmistakably on the rebound. And in this context of positivity and economic momentum, and even more, in light of the 20th edition of the Italian trade show, we wanted to bring together and strengthen the stimuli triggered by Industry 4.0, making Vitrum 2017 - Biason concludes - a portal for information and communication as well as a powerful driver of business at the service of all the industry’s enterprises”.

Parallel events and appointments

Four days of trade show exhibitions, four amazing opportunities to unveil glass industry innovations and previews for visitors from around the world. They begin October 3, 2017, opening day, when the opening press conference will focus on the mission and pivotal moments of Vitrum 2017. Taking place in the afternoon of the same day is the Seminar for the Italian market on “Industry 4.0-related incentives for investments to update machine inventories”. It offers an in-depth look at the Super and IperAmmortamento programs, the Nuova Sabatini and Tax Credits for Research and Development. The list continues. On October 4, there is the “What’s hot in glass processing” seminar, a genuine full-immersion exploration of exciting international inventions. October 4 is also the day that Vitrum hosts the first operations meeting of the International Glass Industry Associations. The meeting follows the Convention held in June on the island of Murano, at which the leading representatives of the glass industry from Italy, Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Poland, Russia, Brazil, Slovakia, the US and Australia – meeting for the first time – voiced their approval of a 360-degree partnership that, during Vitrum 2017, aims to map out the guidelines for the future of glass. October 5th (in partnership with Assovetro, another signature showpiece at the twentieth edition of Vitrum) is the date for the “Glass products for building” seminar, again, dedicated to the Italian market and designed for all glass professionals (architects, engineers and designers), as well as industry professionals.

lassBuild America starts on 12 September 2017. “It’s an event that continues to grow in importance and appeal for our associates as well says the director of Gimav, Laura Biason - and in fact our presence in Atlanta surely will be more impressive than ever this year”.

Many Gimav Italian member companies will take part in GlassBuild America, a not-to-miss event. After Europe, North America is the most relevant market for Italian manufacturers of glass processing machinery, accessories and special products

28

N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

29 It proves that companies and representatives of the Italian glass industry are committed to playing a starring role both at expos and in strategic markets. The numbers speak for themselves: there will be 18 GIMAV MEMBER COMPANIES showcasing the excellence of Italian glass processing machinery overseas, within an exhibition area of more than 700 m2 in the Italian Pavilion (about 100 m2 larger than in Las Vegas last year, that had also increased), which nonetheless might still feel a bit cramped… “The group of Italian companies taking part in GlassBuild America 2017 - the director explains - will in fact be larger than ever, but most of all we are proud to have MANY GIMAV MEMBERS ATTEND THE EVENT FOR THE FIRST TIME this year”. “And in keeping with Italian tradition, there will be plenty of Italian machinery to see in Atlanta, as many companies have chosen to exhibit fully functional and operating machinery on the American stage. As indicated in the last report by the Gimav Study Center, the USA are the largest export market for Italian manufacturers of glass processing machinery, and the North American sales trend exceeds 45%. “Therefore - Laura Biason concludes we feel it is our duty to strengthen these relationships, and once again this year, the Italian exhibition space is sure to amaze”.

At Vitrum, two great innovations to discover at the stand, and more Elettromeccanica Bovone will take part in Vitrum 2017, and plans to showcase TWO

STRAIGHTLINE EDGERS AND TWO ROBOTS from the new line of workcells designed and built by the company. For Elettromeccanica Bovone the international glass trade expo in Milan will not only be an opportunity to welcome visitors and clients at its stand, but at its headquarters as well. “The majority of work required to make our machines is done at our production plant - sales manager Massimo Arata says meaning, we are not the type of company that merely assembles their product in house. In fact, early this year we invested a million Euro in machine tools to modernize our in-house

production line of machine components. The company from Ovada, in the province of Alessandria, controls its entire production chain and ensures overall quality. Therefore, Arata concludes, “we are thinking about allowing visitors to tour our plant”.

United States, a key market and lively stage “The American market has been a key stakeholder of Elettromeccanica Bovone (at GlassBuild America booth 3475) for years, and actually accounts for 30% OF OUR SALES”, explains sales manager Massimo Arata. “The effects of the new presidency remain unclear - he continues - but the US certainly continues to be a lively stage. The signs for our sector remain positive, although there are no clear indications of further growth”. In any case, the United States “is a key market for us”. Elettromeccanica Bovone, while lacking the same extent of market penetration, is also present in Mexico and Canada. With regard to overseas demand, “generally speaking, the machines are bigger, and some lack the technological performance features required in Europe. The two edgers automatically adjust the tooling, and customers may choose to add one, two, or however many robots they need. The workcell capabilities can also be expanded by adding washers and milling machines. Basically, “the machines are like islands, and the robots form the bridges that connect them to the expansions required based on the customer production process and circumstances”, Arata states.

They are also competitive from an e nergy efficiency standpoint.

On-going success since 2016 The company’s innovative solutions are researched and developed in-house. “The new workcells are the result of an 18 month-long effort. They were launched on the market in 2016, and are highly sought after - Arata concludes - because they objectively have no rivals on the market, being THE ONLY ONES capable of performing self-adjustments, and eliminate the need for an operator”.

lass is an unforgiving material: it clearly shows its excellence and its flaws. That is why those who use a Mappi furnace, whether it be from the ATS to the FOX series, can rely on solutions and innovative features that enable them to pursue excellence on a daily basis. The two series are mainly differentiated by the product size. Let’s look at them in terms of daily workflow.

Daily workflow advantages and benefits Set-up times for tempering are minimized, because the furnace recognizes the glass size and thickness, and automatically sets the main operating parameters

The USA has historically been Mappi’s main market, and Florida is the home of the Mappi US headquarters and a large service center. It was not by chance that Mappi came to hold such relevant position in this market. It gained its acclaimed reputation for combining quality and reliability with outstanding innovation though continuous improvement. Nancy Mammaro, CEO of Mappi stated: “Competing on the US market has always been a great source of inspiration for us, because we know US industry professionals are very competent, capable of appreciating and understanding the true value of new ideas, and results of indisputable quality.

ccordingly. Hence the machine performs repetitive a tasks, while the operator focuses on important decisions.

Temperature, shut-down and start-up In a Mappi furnace the temperature of each heat zone is kept even by small heating elements controlled by an automatic sensors system that adjusts the heat only where required, thereby minimizing consumption and eliminating thermal shock-related glass defects. The furnace can be shut down immediately, and the start-up cycle is very short. In fact, after being off for the entire week-end, the furnace can be ready to work in just one hour.

Temperature control also means maximum insulation, to keep the heat in the furnace rather than allowing it to dissipate into the environment. All of this results in less waste, greater safety, and a more comfortable workplace in addition to ensuring greater cost savings, shorter down-times, and constant product quality.

Mappi Constant Quality Another distinguishing trait is that Mappi builds everything in-house, without relying on sub-contractors or modules assembled elsewhere. This allows Mappi to control the quality of each component by means of a comprehensive procedure called Mappi Constant Quality.

At Vitrum, OCMI-OTG will be the star of the “Hollow Glass” section for pharmaceutical, tableware and technical glassware OCMI will attend Vitrum from a position of strength, as the leading supplier of hollow glass processing machinery. The newly developed versions of SA stemware sealing and stem stretching machines, PAS blow-presses for jugs, custom-designed hydraulic or pneumatic presses, and the possibility of supplying “turnkey” production lines for glass blocks and high-voltage insulators will certainly be placed front and center by OCMI, as they are bound to capture the interest of visitors from Eastern Europe, the Middle-East, and Mediterranean Africa who typically attend Vitrum. As a result of its cooperation with the Venetian company MT Forni, which specializes in glass melting furnaces, annealing and decorating lehrs, OCMI is capable of supplying the technology and know-how required to produce technical glass articles such as glass blocks and HV insulators. Based on the pre-event promotional effort, OCMI also expects to see

erance. The Roboglass automatic tube loader significantly reduces manual interventions, thereby allowing operators to load other machines or oversee other processes, while minimizing the risk of contaminating the glass tubes. The PM-A automatic packing machine, available for both vials and ampoules, prevents any sort of contact or rubbing action between the containers by means of a suction-cup equipped rack pickup system, and also ensures the same number of vials or ampoules are placed in each box. Automatic packing machines also contribute to making the operator’s role more flexible, and allow him to work on several machines at the same time.

Not just pharmaceutical glass OCMI-OTG is also a supplier of leading global manufacturers of crystal and soda-lime stemware. The SA model, available in the 42, 48 and 60 stations version, performs the delicate work of sealing the stems incoming from the glass press with the bowls delivered from the press-blow or blow-blow glass processing machines. After the sealing process the machine, if so required, can be set up to stretch the stems to the desired length as the main cam controlling

This machine is also equipped with a specifically developed camera-driven quality control system installed immediately downstream of the stem and bowl loading zone, which automatically checks the items height and adjusts the upper grippers height as required to ensure the sealing point height is uniform across all stations. This model is a true expression of the outstanding versatility by which OCMI meets the specific production needs of every client. Although European demand differs from that of markets in the United States or the Far East in terms of glass type and design, OCMI has proven to be a reliable long-term partner, who truly listens and complies with even the smallest changes final users may request to maximize productivity and efficiency.

FOREIGN SALES MANAGER OF O. M. SCHIATTI ANGELO

The 20th Vitrum holds great promise Vitrum 2017 comes at a very auspicious time for companies. “I feel rather optimistic about the forthcoming event in October", Cinzia Schiatti confirms. “After years of stagnation the global market is generally moving again, although in Italy the pace seems a bit slower”. Therefore, “many companies need to replace their machinery, which in many cases pre-dates the crisis”.

PRODUCTION SYSTEMS HAVE TO BE UPGRADED, which “bodes well for this historic Italian world trade expo”. Schiatti will bring to Vitrum the newly upgraded versions of its products, with even more advanced technological solutions, and a new, extremely intuitive interface.

North America: a fast growing market, with an expo worth watching The United States market has grown faster than any other for the last few months. This is where Officina Meccanica Schiatti Angelo recorded “VERY SIGNIFICANT GROWTH” in 2016, according to Cinzia Schiatti, Foreign Sales Manager of the company, and the first months of 2017 were “excellent”. Therefore, the conditions for GlassBuild America in September “are all very favorable”. And in fact, this show “has been on a constant growth trend, even though it will never measure up to European expos due to the size of its reference audience”. The American market however excels in making fast decisions “even though the years of crisis have made local companies a bit more cautious”. And above all - the manager concludes - “what we noticed is that after the official agreement to purchase the machine is made, our American customers’ purchase order issuance process and related bureaucratic formalities are definitely more streamlined than in other markets”.

FOCUS ON VITRUM & GBA 2017 Automatic machining of all 4 glass sides The TURNOVER PROCESSING LINE, designed to automatically machine all 4 sides of the glass, fully meets the requirements of the fourth industrial revolution. The line is composed of 4 straightline edgers and bevellers (customers can choose from more than 30 models) and 3 vertical tables, each equipped with an arm that rotates the glass by 90 degrees. “What makes this unit unique is that it can consecutively process GLASS SHEETS OF ANY SIZE. Therefore, the operator only has to load and unload the sheets. The PLC automatically manages the work cycle”, explains Cinzia Schiatti, Foreign Sales Manager of her family-owned company. For those who lack the space required to accommodate a line over 40 meters long, “Schiatti has designed a solution with a smaller footprint composed of an edger, a Turnover unit and a series of conveyors that work in a ‘loop’ arrangement”, she adds.

Double edge grinding and polishing Another innovation regards BFP DOUBLE EDGERS, which simultaneously grind and polish the edge on both sides of the glass to obtain a flat edge with arris on 3-25 mm thick glass. The diamond wheels automatically adjust themselves. The maximum working height and length is 4.500 mm. “The squaring unit - Schiatti explains - levels the glass prior to grinding, while the alignment unit ensures the glass is evenly ground on both sides”. The conveyor system was designed to securely hold the glass, and lower maintenance costs. The belts are suit-

59 able for low-e glass processing, and run over tracks built with wear-resistant materials.

The pluses of the TFV vertical drill Among the outstanding products made by Officina Meccanica Schiatti Angelo are also the TFV 2000 AND TFV 2500 DRILLS, which execute holes up to 25 mm in diameter, and mill 3 to 15 mm thick glass to shape. They are fully automated, and all components are managed by the axes controller and top quality drives. “They have a touch-screen user interface - the manager concludes - with programmable work cycles users can input directly on the machine via the integrated editor, or through the drag & drop graphic interface. With the (optional) automatic tool changeover device, both operations can be performed in the same work cycle”.

At Vitrum with renewed enthusiasm, encouraged by a market buzzing with activity

“We are excited to unveil the new chemical tempering oven at Vitrum”, states Roberta Cometti. “We always have high expectations for this event and, this year we hope visitors will be interested in this innovation launched by the company, not only in terms of possible purchases, but also as an awareness of the company’s journey to develop this machine, the possibilities it offers and the benefits it can provide in glass processing. We are aware - she adds - that THE ITALIAN MARKET IS BUZZING, thanks to demand tied to Industry 4.0, therefore, we really expect a good turnout from domestic visitors. We also hope to meet

MANY CUSTOMERS FROM OVERSEAS - she concludes - to show them the renewed energy and ability of RCN Solutions to put itself on the line with new solutions”.

Innovation is also center stage at GlassBuild America “In the American market, our company works well with consumer materials, specifically, the LAMINATION FILM that is certified to meet American standards and this is a valuable asset in market penetration”, explains Roberta Cometti from the International Department at RCN Solutions. “We are looking forward to a positive outcome from our participation in GlassBuild America. This event is a GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO TEST A MARKET that, between the elections and economic recovery, is going through a particularly interesting period”. “The show - concludes Cometti - is always a prime opportunity to present our new solution for chemical tempering of glass to overseas consumers, as well as to experience the benefits our commitment in recent years. Since 2015 we have worked closely with our local agent to strengthen our brand, which is quite well-known, especially on the East Coast”.

Partnership with the University of Trento “The studies we conducted some time ago, in partnership with the University of Trento, validated the HIGH QUALITY OF THE PROCESS. Chemical tempering maintains optimal glass flatness, which also facilitates the subsequent lamination phase. Chemically tempered glass has twice the strength of traditional heat-tempered glass and makes it possible to PROCESS GLASS AS THIN AS 2 MM OR LESS. It is worth mentioning - points out Cometti - that this process complies with the current applicable European standards. Today, there is increasing demand from both legislation and the market for products with specific features, precisely as in the case of chemical tempering of glass. This is another reason why we chose to develop it and speed up our entry into this sector”.

66 N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

67

RCN technology is strengthened by the expertise of Gianfranco Rivaroli The project to produce this technology has been on the back burner at RCN Solutions for some time. “In early 2017 we decided to partner with Gianfranco Rivaroli, who has 45 years of experience in the manufacture and sale of chemical tempering ovens. Working closely on the project allowed us to quickly finalize a product design that had existed on paper for years. Thanks to the know-how of Rivaroli, at Vitrum we will be able to display a functioning machine, ready to be installed and put into production”.

Industry 4.0 and communication between machines: RCN responds “The chemical tempering system - explains Cometti - can be combined with lamination furnaces, already programmed to meet the digital requirements of Industry 4.0, satisfying the need for machines that can communicate with one another. In this way - she concludes - we continue to expand on the technical journey that is committed to supporting our customers”.

Davide Masnada, CEO of CMS Spa

Some of the innovations the Zogno-based company is working on “will be unveiled at Vitrum 2017 in October. A show - points out Giulio Vitelli - that is crucial for us. In the last few years at Vitrum we have witnessed a convergence of customers who are increasingly aware of their needs and are ready to talk about actual projects”. “Obviously, this is an encouraging trend that allows us to focus on investments that will be completed shortly. Competition in Italy is fierce, but the domestic market seems to be flourishing, probably stimulated by the requirements related to Industry 4.0. Our machines are perfectly capable of meeting those needs”. “Our technologies make it possible, from a production standpoint, to assess the number of pieces and linear meters produced which allows us to calculate the performance of various tools and, therefore, the actual reliability of the machine, ultimately producing the big data needed to analyze and evaluate production in its entirety”. In September, the company’s North American branch, “will participate in GlassBuild America with the same objectives”. “At the overseas trade show, also on the list of ‘must’ trade fairs, we plan to focus attention on our vertical solutions that are increasingly popular in the United States”, concludes Giulio Vitelli.

viding specific demonstrations and introducing them to our production site and our technologies. This is how Giulio Vitelli, Sales Manager of CMS

Glass Division - Costruzioni Macchine Speciali Spa, sums up the event held June 16th

and 17th. An event that not only demonstrates the role CMS plays in the glass industry, but also the parent company’s interest in the industry itself. In fact, since 2015, CMS has been wholly owned by the SCM Group, global leader in technologies for processing a vast range of materials (wood, plastic, glass, stone, metal and composites). The SCM Group is firmly committed to the glass industry, is ready to invest in it and aims to increase the share of revenue derived from it.

During the Open House, CMS rolled out the products that “are our real best sellers”. From Speed, a 4-axis horizontal work center (that processed thin glass for household appliances at high speed in demonstration, as well as 20 mm-thick tops for furniture); to the vertical line that includes Profile, for edging, grinding and milling rectangular and shaped pieces of glass; and of Vertec, an innovative drilling and milling machine. Idroline, on the other hand, is a complete hydro-abrasive water-jet cutting system with specific structural solutions that ensure high-quality technological and production performance. “Today - states Giulio Vitelli - we not only invited our customers to engage with us, to get to know the inner workings of the company, its greatness and its potential, but we also made a promise: to meet here again next year with an even more complete product range that will also include cutting tables”. Simultaneously with the growth of its so-called standard products, CMS is focused on showcasing its ability to produce special solutions, “as in customized h orizontal machines able to process glass sheets larger than the classic jumbo-size, even 10-12 meters, as well as machines dedicated to processing curved glass, as in solutions for particular needs, like those of the aeronautical and aerospace industries. This - concludes Vitelli - is a unique feature that has traditionally set us apart. CMS: born to build special machines”.

Next steps: revenue and cutting-edge technology One of the core aims of the Open House is closely tied to a strategic company decision: “Our new parent, the SCM Group, is pouring a lot of energy and resources into the glass industry because it firmly believes in this market. The goal is to drive sales and develop machines that are increasingly at the cutting edge of technology”, points out the manager. Growth

of the entire Group has remained constant over the last few years - at about 12-13% annually - with revenues that spiked from 76 million euros in 2010 to 140 million in 2016. “Thanks to the previous owners’ decision to externally diversify the product range and the sectors of interest, from glass processing machines to those for stone, wood, light alloys, composite materials, plastic, carbon fiber and other innovative materials”, remarks Vitelli. “Riding the wave of the significant growth phase the Group is experiencing, it plans to use that momentum to drive expansion in the glass sector”, he states.

The Zogno production facility is also growing The Open House was also the perfect opportunity to announce the expansion of the Zogno production facility,

73 that employs about 650 people. “The plant where today’s event was held will be completely and solely dedicated to the Glass and Stone Division. Production of machines for the other sectors will soon be moved to the new facility that we purchased just a few months ago and is now under renovation”. The new site - former headquarter of Manifattura della Valle Brembana, located about a kilometer from the historic headquarters of CMS in Val Brembana - has 15,000 built square meters and a total area of 27,000 square meters. “The new site will give the company some much-needed breathing room from a production standpoint - explains Vitelli - Even the showroom will be revamped to display one model of each type of our machines”.

Glass brings new personality to security doors ARTICLE

“G

lass was the answer we needed to express our concept of the door”. This is where F ERDINANDO TEDESCO , architect, and J ENNIFER BASSANI , designer of the V ENTESIMOSECOLO (20 th Century) collection by Vighi Art and Design begin their story. “The door represents a ‘boundary’ that, once crossed, allows different realities - that we like to call ‘souls’ - to connect. The entrance door portrays your personality for those who enter your home”.

The project grew out of a partnership between Vighi Art and Design, Sintesi Design and Brand Glass. The winning combination: glass and digital printing N . 4 5 J U LY 2 0 1 7

77 A security door is often seen as a furnishing accessory that tends to be hidden. We are developing a concept of the home that, instead, envisions the entrance as possessing a dignity of its own. “Thus, the door becomes an essential part of the home - they continue - where each individual can potentially reflect their own personality. Hence, the desire to use glass, a material that is naturally reflective. This also created the need to be able to ‘customize’ the panel, so the customer can align it, as closely as possible, with their taste and lifestyle”.

The role of digital printing on glass The Tedesco and Bassani product uses digital printing to bring an almost chameleon-like essence to the glass, reinterpreting it as marble or metal. “I did not want the doors to become a constraint - explains Tedesco - I feel the customer should be free to put their own interpretation on the panel, while retaining the stylistic features and geometric and compositional structure of the three collections: the Thirties, the Fifties and the Seventies”. The technology of printing on glass has made it possible to reinterpret, on the skins, the geometries of color, shape and materials that belonged to these three 20th century decades. The glass we use, concludes Tedesco, “is tempered glass that complies with current, applicable legislative standards. It is slightly beveled around the entire perimeter, allowing for proper installation”. To make the doors, we work with the Tuscan firm, Brand Glass, that also does the digital printing.

This is how Vighi Security Doors reinterprets security doors in the Third Millennium. And, in the VentesimoSecolo [20th Century] collection, glass is the star player

A collection, three lines, inspired insight: the primary cultural and lifestyle phenomena of the 1900s Security doors that bring an innovative twist to the company’s own mission: to make products of the highest quality and functionality, with unique architectural-aesthetic solutions for those who purchase them. The new doors in the VentesimoSecolo collection by Vighi Security Doors are the brain child of architect Fernando Tedesco and designer Jennifer Bassani, aka: Sintesi Design. The star player, par excellence, is glass. The kind of glass

79 where digital printing is central to a unique feature that makes this exclusive made-in-Italy product even more attractive around the world. Design and materials: glass is center stage It is the internal panel of the security door that makes this object unique and totally in keeping with the building in which it is installed. VentesimoSecolo is made up of nine panels that are then divided among the three lines: the Thirties, the Fifties and the Seventies. The skins were inspired by cultural and lifestyle phenomena of those three periods in the 1900s. If this is the design innovation, the technical novelty comes from the skins themselves, that are a fascinating experiment in materials. Glass is one of them. Reinterpreted, it becomes marble and color, creating exquisite, unique visual effects. The other materials used are leather, wood and metal. Top of the line anti-intrusion properties Behind the application of the VentesimoSecolo collection panel, the safety structure of the security door remains intact. The skins are designed to fit all models of the Vighi security doors, whether the locking mechanisms are mechanically or electronically controlled. “The glass skin, on the internal side of the door, does not change the performance features of the door LORENZO MURATORI, states

GENERAL MANAGER OF VIGHI SECURITY DOORS - It is tempered glass, glued to the internal panel, and is impact-resistant. If it is accidentally broken, the glass does not shatter or create potentially harmful sharp pieces”.

The secret is in the color

“The printing itself was not an issue; the key was to find the right formula for binding the color to the glass of a security door”. ANDREA BRACCIALINI, owner of Pistoia-based BRAND GLASS, explains the core issue and the complexity inherent to digital printing on glass for the new Vighi security doors - those in the VentesimoSecolo collection - produced in partnership with architect Ferdinando Tedesco and designer Jennifer Bassani. At Brand Glass, we have been in business for 15 years - he points out - “and in recent years we have become specialized in digital printing, purchasing state-of-the-art machines and making specific modifications to adapt them to suit our needs”. The Vighi project also called for an ‘adjustment’ to the machines, “for example, in order to print the skin, made up of crevices and lines, it was not enough to just make changes to the file”. It was a “very intricate project, that required putting all of our experience into play in order to achieve the desired result. To date, we are the only ones who do digital printing on security doors”, concludes Braccialini.
