Come experience a summer of fun and adventure at Girl Scouts Louisiana East Resident Camp! Our staff has been busy planning exciting programs for you, as campers journey through what “matters” and through “nature”...with sessions encouraging girls to participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and outdoor-related programs. Our Resident Camps offer many session options in three unique camp settings: Camp Covington for beginner campers, Camp Marydale, and Camp Whispering Pines. Girl Scouts in our region have long enjoyed the beauty and fresh air of these camps! We are offering tailored sessions for every girl, including those who are new to camping and veteran campers. Girl Scout Resident Camp provides girls with a unique opportunity to discover the world around them, to connect with others who share their interests and passions, and to take action in a safe and supervised setting. Resident Camp is a place where the value of living in a community is every bit as important as learning new outdoor skills. Girls learn independence and courage, and return home more confident, young women! We are ready to help them make their experience the best yet. Our diverse, welltrained staff provides campers with a safe, supportive environment in which they can enjoy camp to the fullest. This year we’ve added something extra-special in addition to traditional camp activities like hiking, outdoor cooking, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, archery, horseback riding and the challenge course. Girl Scouts will journey through what “matters” at Camp Marydale while learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), and working on different science related Try-Its and Badges. At Camp Whispering Pines, they will take a journey through “nature,” learning what the outdoors has to offer while working on different outdoor Try-Its and Badges. So whichever camp you choose or better yet —choose them all! — we encourage you to join us at camp! Happy Trails,
Donna “Sunny D” Dupré
Shannon “Echo” Bazor

summer themes
session fun
Girls will devote a portion of each session to a special area of interest. The remainder of the session will be spent participating in general camp activities (e.g. hiking, swimming daily – weather permitting, boating, climbing wall, arts and crafts, cooking out, discovering nature, etc.) The emphasis of the session is included in the individual session description.
at camp
Sessions begin on Sunday and end on Friday unless otherwise noted.
Please understand that it is the Girl Scouts Louisiana East’s intention to guide and direct campers in the programs listed for each session. However, because our philosophy of camping is one which allows girl planning, we cannot guarantee the girls will choose every activity we suggest.
all about resident camp who can go to camp?
Camp Covington, Camp Marydale, and Camp Whispering Pines welcomes all girls! Our programs are designed to meet the need for fun for both our Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, abilities, or socio-economic factors. Our campers must be at least 6 years old or entering 1st grade in fall 2011. Your camper may attend an unlimited number of sessions.
Each week at camp we have a different theme planned. Please send your camper with the appropriate “fun” clothing for our activity. Please note there is no need to go out and purchase anything. A homemade costume or a fun accessory is what it is all about! Girls will also have an opportunity to “accessorize themselves” with supplies that we have at camp.
all about
resident camp
progression Camp progression is the key to a great experience. Girl Scout camp programs are designed for specific age levels so each girl may choose the experience that is appropriate for her. The idea is to give girls the skills they need one step at a time so they may be successful at each and every step. For example, girls need to learn how to ride a horse at a walk before learning how to ride at a trot, or learn basic paddle strokes in a canoe before using a kayak. Progressive steps enable girls to be challenged, but not pushed, to a point for which they are ready.
food Ample, kid friendly, well-balanced dietician planned meals are served in the main dining hall. Special dietary needs must be noted on the health card. Parents of girls with special dietary needs (vegetarian, Kosher, halal, etc.) must contact the council at least 30 days prior to program to ensure their daughter’s needs can be accommodated. No food, including snacks, may be sent with camper unless there is a medical necessity that has been discussed with the Camp Director prior to their session. Food in the living areas attracts unwanted critters.
what about the heat? At resident camp, girls adapt easily to the climate. Campers naturally adapt to living in the summer heat without air conditioning or fans by staying hydrated, resting during the hottest part of the day, and wearing cool, cotton clothing. The equipment list included in the confirmation packet will include all necessary equipment to help beat the heat.
who will be my campeR’S counselors? Our counselors are selected based on their program skills, maturity, education, caring attitude, and experience with children. Program areas, such as ropes course, horses, swimming and boating, are directed by certified and trained staff. All of our staff must successfully complete pre-camp staff training and become members of Girl Scouts of the USA.

what is the trading post?
The camp trading post is a “general store” that sells camp items such as water bottles, mess kits, mosquito netting, ponchos, stationery and stamps, and fun camp memorabilia. The amount received with your fee balance will be credited to the camper’s account at the trading post. We will not accept any cash from campers. If there is a remaining balance of over $2 at the end of the camper’s session, a council shop credit will be issued at check-out. No cash will be refunded. In 2010, $25 was the amount received by most campers for use at trading post. The trading post is optional.
camp buddies
Girl Scout camp is a wonderful way to meet new people, although it can also be a great experience for two friends who already know each other. A camper may request a “buddy” on her camp registration form. To register as buddies, the girls must: list each other’s name on the registration form in the buddy blank; qualify and register for the same session (all 1st & 2nd choices); and send both registrations and deposits in the same envelope. Make sure you and your buddy are planning this together. Buddy placement is not guaranteed. Large groups/ multiple buddy requests can be accommodated. The Camp Director has final authority to house campers at her discretion.

resident camp
units
Girls of comparable age are organized into groups living in platform tents or cabins, called units. Girl Scouts of the USA requires that counselors have separate sleeping arrangements from campers. The unit counselors are housed in tents or cabins in close proximity to the campers. Unit lodges are available for gatherings, rainy day activities, and cookouts. Bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets are located in each unit; each shower and toilet stall is private. Each platform tent or cabin is equipped with cots and foam mattresses. The tents at camp are on raised wooden platforms or concrete slabs with 256 square feet of living space. Mosquito nets and poles should be purchased for all campers staying in tents at camp. These may be purchased at the trading post at check-in.
waiting list
If you register for sessions which no longer have space available, you will be placed on a “waiting list” for the session with the shortest waiting list. If space becomes available, girls will be placed in the order they were added to the list. Parents must respond immediately to notice of waiting list placement, letting the council know if the girl can or cannot attend the camp session. “Buddies” will be placed together from a waiting list. In the event that only one (1) space is available, the council will place a camper, but only if their parent notifies the council that their camper may be placed without the original buddy requested.
check in and check out Campers will check in at Camp Whispering Pines between 2 and 4 p.m. and at Camp Marydale between 3 and 5 p.m. on opening day and depart between 4 and 6 p.m. closing day. For 4 Day Sessions and Beginner Resident Camp Sessions at Covington, campers will check in at camp from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and depart between 4 and 6 p.m. closing day. Please bring a sack lunch. The first meal provided will be dinner. Special early checkout arrangements must be discussed at check-in. Checkout at a later time is not an option. The camp gates will remain closed until the time indicated. Directions to camp will be included in your confirmation packet.

non-girl scouts Procedures for acceptance and participation in camp programs are the same for every girl without regard to race, national origin or religion. Not a Girl Scout or currrently registered? Not a problem. Simply include the $12 annual national membership dues along with the camp fees/form and pay the regular session fees.
camper physical exam Every camper is covered by health and accident insurance. Campers are required to have a physical examination within 24 months prior to entering Resident Camp. The health form must be filled out and signed by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner, presented at check-in. Campers must have this form completed in order to attend camp. All immunizations and vaccinations need to be listed on the form. Health forms from previous years of camp are not available as they are permanently stored upon closure of camp season. Please keep a copy of the health form for your records.
girls with special needs
Please contact the Camp Director for campers requiring special diets, special health care, or with mobility limitations over rough terrain. You will be able to discuss the nature of your camper’s needs and gather additional information to determine if the camp can provide the proper support, supervision and necessary accommodations for your camper to have a safe, fulfilling camp experience. To be successful at camp, your camper needs to be independent with self care (i.e.showering, dressing, using the restroom, etc.), and able to function in an eight-to-one camper to staff ratio.
all about
resident camp
expected camper behavior Girls are expected to follow the Girl Scout Promise and Law, listen and follow the directions of counselors, use the buddy system, and stay within camp boundaries. No drugs, alcohol, pets, or weapons are permitted on Girl Scout property. Campers are not permitted to bring a cell phone. The Camp Director reserves the right to send home any camper who neglects to follow camp rules, becomes a danger to herself and/or others, or damages property. No refund will be given if a child is sent home due to misconduct.
visits and phone calls Due to the full schedule of activities, having family/friends visit may be disruptive for your daughter. Therefore, we do not have a camp visitation day. Phones are not available for campers’ use. If there is an emergency, we will arrange a time for your daughter to be near a phone to receive or make a phone call. Campers are not permitted to bring a cell phone.
modification of programs Girl Scouts Louisiana East plans quality programs for camp with the health, safety, and well-being of the camper as our first priority. Some sessions may be altered or cancelled due to weather, natural disaster, lack of staff, or lack of registrations. The Camp Director may determine whether a girl is competent to participate in any activity and, if necessary, transfer her to another program. When necessary, campers will participate in alternate activities; there will be no reduction or refunds given if this occurs. No reductions or refunds will be issued if changes are made in activities due to weather or natural disaster. If a session is cancelled due to lack of registrations, campers will be afforded the opportunity to select another session or receive a full refund.

New this year!
camp covington
beginners resident camp is an ideal program for the
beginning or first time camper. Held at Girl Scouts Louisiana East Camp Covington, the sessions are three days and two nights in length. These sessions are designed with the new camper in mind and are for girls entering 1st – 4th grade. Girls will have so much fun meeting new friends and developing their camping skills. They participate in outdoor cooking, nature activities, campfires, songs, arts & crafts, and water activities. Girl Scout Daisies live in Pooh’s Corner, our cabin unit, while other girls occupy the platform tent area (once cabins are full). All of the counselors at Camp Covington are fully trained and have participated at our other summer camps. They have a whole summer’s worth of ideas and songs to share with the campers. If you have any questions, please email the Camp Director Shannon “Echo” Bazor at cwpdirector@gsle.org.

To register for Beginners Resident Camp a $50 deposit must accompany the registration form. Please mail all registration forms and deposit to the council. Although care is given to greatly reduce the risk involved through safety procedures, education and equipment, I understand high adventure programs are not without an element of danger. I understand the risk involved with this type of program, and I feel the benefits outweigh the potential hazards of the program. My child has permission to take part in and travel to an activity off site of camp or between any of the Girl Scouts Louisiana East camps as part of the planned activities for my child’s camp session. ______________________________________________________ Parent/Guardian Signature

about us ACA Accreditation
Girl Scout Camp Marydale and Camp Whispering Pines are both accredited by the American Camp Association. Accreditation means that each camp undergoes a thorough review process by outside camping professionals every three years. Our Girl Scout camps consistently achieve the highest standards in the areas of personnel, program, site administration, and health care.
Three Cheers to the Camp Staff
There is a ratio of one staff member for every 6-8 girls. Camp staff members are chosen for their character, understanding of girls, love of the outdoors and special skills. Staff members receive extensive training in program skills, first aid/CPR and emergency procedures prior to the beginning of camp. A Health Supervisor lives on the camp site during the camp season and a licensed physician is on call at all times. All staff members working directly with campers undergo a Louisiana Investigative Background check. Each camp is governed by the American Camp Association’s Youth Camp Regulations and operated under Girl Scouts of the USA’s guidelines and standards.
2011 Resident Camp
Girl Scout Summer Programs help girls of all ages learn and grow through a variety of fun activities. Whether she is a first time participant or an “old timer,” each girl will meet new friends and experience new adventures in partnership with qualified, trained adults. Living, learning and having fun – that’s what Girl Scout Summer Camp is all about! It is a chance to meet girls from different backgrounds and cultures…enjoy a taste of independence… develop new skills, interests…explore the outdoors…and try new things.
Nurses Needed
One of the most important and critical jobs to fill at camp is the Health Supervisor which requires highly specialized training. It has become increasingly difficult to find nurses who can live and work the full summer at our camps. We are now looking for several people who would “job share” these very important positions at camp. Camp-age campers of the Health Supervisor can attend free of charge (limit one). To be eligible you need to be a registered nurse, EMT or paramedic who would consider living and working at camp for at least one full week (Sunday morning through Friday night). For more information, please contact Donna Dupré at 225-927-8946, ext. 1253 or email cmdirector@gsle.org for Marydale and for Covington or Whispering Pines email Shannon Bazor at cwpdirector@gsle.org.
