SUMMER 2018
G.I.R.L.
CONNECTION
PROUD TO BE
Girl Scouts!
As the best organization in the country for girl leadership development, Girl Scouts proudly own the “Girl” in Girl Scouts. There is no organization that more thoroughly understands the value of programming designed specifically for girls and delivered in an all-girl learning space than Girl Scouts. We are, and will remain, the first choice for girls and parents who want to provide their girls’ opportunities to build new skills, explore the outdoors, get interested in STEM, participate in service projects, learn entrepreneurship, and grow into happy, successful, and civically engaged adults. We encourage you to help us increase our visibility by: wearing your Girl Scout gear in your schools, your churches, and your community; telling your Girl Scout story online and in person; and becoming advocates and recruiters for Girl Scouts! Check out our new Public Service Announcement, "Lifetime of Leadership," which celebrates Renew your Girl Scout notable Girl Scout alums and their amazing accomplishments. It can be found at membership today! http://bit.ly/leadershipPSA and brings to life what recent studies have shown: Girl Scouts have Your Girl Scout adventure has only just begun. There is so better life outcomes than their non–Girl Scout much more to discover and do (indoors and out!) and so peers. They are more confident, seek challenges to much more each G.I.R.L. is capable of. a greater degree, are more active decision-makers, Now, with new badges and Journeys in science, and are more proficient problem-solvers in their technology, engineering, and math (STEM); the outdoors; communities. life skills; and beyond, there are even more opportunities to prepare each G.I.R.L. for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure she deserves, all in a safe, nolimits place designed by and for every girl. Troops who renew their membership for the 2018-2019 year will be invited to attend our council’s Believe In G.I.R.L. (better known as the BIG event), taking place at the University of New Orleans, on Saturday, September 29. See page 8 for more info.
Renew now at www.gsle.org/renew!
Please feel free to share the PSA on your social media channels to show how @girlscouts and @gslecouncil have been taking the lead for more than a century!
GIRL SCOUTS' CWP Lake Repair Project added to state's Capital Outlay budget Girl Scouts Louisiana East's request for $850,000 of capital outlay funding from the state to repair Camp Whispering Pines' lake valve was added to the priority list - PRIORITY One, as an amendment which was passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the recently concluded Regular Session of the Legislature and has been sent to the Governor for his signature. The Legislature is authorized to make changes to their recently passed Capital Outlay Budget in the current Special Session of the Legislature, so technically, nothing is final until the Special Session ends and the Governor signs the Capital Outlay Bill into law. The $850,000 appropriation will still need to go to the State Bond Commission for Line of Credit consideration later this year.
Girl Scout lobbyist Mary-Patricia Wray discusses strategy with members of Baton Rouge Cadette Troop 10324 outside the Louisiana House of Representatives.
Erosion is eating away at our 23-acre lake’s spillway. If it does not get substantially repaired, Timber Lake could empty into the nearby Tangipahoa River and cause flooding downstream. We continue to make repairs, but much more is needed than these “band-aid” steps.
A big thank you goes to everyone who wrote letters or called the representatives on the Ways & Means committee when it was discovered in late April that Girl Scouts had been erroneously left off the bill due to no fault of our own. For the past few years, state lawmakers have approved our council’s funding efforts and have put our lake project in the state’s capital outlay. However, with little money for construction projects like ours at CWP, the funding has never made it to the camp. Historically, due to budget constraints, many projects in capital outlays do not receive their approved funding. If more civic engagement is needed, we will let you know!
State Representative Nicholas Muscarello, Jr., whose district encompasses CWP, meets Cadettes Daly Williams, Arizona Mitchell, Skylar Phillips, and Yvonne Bui.

Shout-out to our Cookie Entrepreneurs for another successful season! Wow! Our Girl Scouts proved themselves to be remarkable entrepreneurs, after completing another successful product sale during this year’s Cookie Program. Once again, they sold over 1 million packages of cookies, with cookie bosses averaging 165 packages each. “Our Girl Scouts continue to amaze us every Cookie season, and this year is no different,” said Alisha Moore, Chief Customer Experience Officer. “By setting and achieving goals, and learning new technology and business skills, our girls can continue to lead with confidence and be successful.”
A total of 303 girls entered the 2018 Cookie Hall of Fame for selling 500 or more packages of cookies. This year’s top seller was Girl Scout Cadette Kai Deberry of Slidell who sold 1,606 boxes! A big thank you goes to the many parents and volunteers who support their Girl Scouts as they practice goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics, to lead their troop and council to success every year. The Cookie Program helps fund new adventures and life-changing opportunities for girls, from trips and community service projects to
summer camp and membership renewals.

Who remembers pretending to change diapers on baby dolls? Baton Rouge Brownie Troop 10234 changed the diaper game and packaged 6500 diapers at the Baton Rouge Diaper Bank to donate to their community.
Eleanor Cerise and Kinley Brahney of Metairie Troop 41168 earned three badges and a fun patch at Challenge Island’s Daisy Triple Engineering Badge Workshop in Houma. These innovators designed a working roller coaster, built car models and created a board and arcade game.
Letting your little bird leave the nest is a feeling you’ll never forget, especially when she comes back with courage to take on new skills. Zachary Brownie Troop 10349 accomplished new skills and learned the meaning of teamwork with challenges, such as our Cajun skis, during their first weekend stay at Camp Marydale.
A Girl Scout’s love and pride can take her to winning heights. Virginia Soignier of Junior Troop 21439, in Thibodaux, won first place at her school, Bayou Community Academy, social studies fair and regional social studies fair with her Girl Scouts history project.
