G.I.R.L.
CONNECTION
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE the Power of a G.I.R.L. It comes as no surprise to us that Girl Scout alums are making history! From the youngest woman ever elected to Congress to the first women of color to be elected congresswomen, Girl Scout alums are etching their names in our history books like the trailblazers they are. And this sends a strong message to the world: Never underestimate the power of a G.I.R.L. ! Being a Girl Scout means paying attention to the world around you, Members of New Orleans Troops 42614 and 40971 perform the flag identifying problems affecting your community, ceremony at the Juliette Low Leadership Luncheon. and taking action to solve them! Whether it’s on the local or national level, Girl Scouts have always been championing issues to help improve their communities and make the world a better place. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who was a Girl Scout growing up in California, encouraged girls during the B.I.G. event to take a risk and be willing to step outside of their comfort zone, while Councilmember At-Large Helena Moreno reflected on her competitive nature in earning badges during remarks made at our Juliette Low Leadership Luncheon. It seems like everywhere you turn it’s Go-getters, Innovators, and Risk-Takers, and Leaders like today’s Girl Scouts that are out there showing this world what they are capable of! What’s your story, because we want to hear it! Email marcomm@gsle.org today!

GSLE announces new CEO Girl Scouts Louisiana East has selected Rebecca Pennington, Ph.D., CFRE, as its new Chief Executive Officer, following a national search. She replaced Jackie Alexander who retired at the end of the year, officially joining the council on December 10. Dr. Pennington comes to Girl Scouts with many years of experience in non-profit management, fundraising, and community engagement, and has expressed her commitment to working with all of us to advance Girl Scouting throughout southeast Louisiana. We are excited to welcome her and are eagerly anticipating this new chapter in the council’s life. Dr. Pennington most recently served as the Senior Director of Walk MS for the South Central Region of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where she also served as Vice President of Walk MS and Emerging Events and Vice-President of Development for its Louisiana office. She has a consistent record of increasing revenue while serving in senior fund raising positions, with extensive experience in all areas of fundraising and public relations, particularly capital campaigns, the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, annual and planned giving,
and brand management. Prior to joining the MS Society, Dr. Pennington worked in higher education for more than 22 years, managing capital campaigns for Nicholls State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Nunez Community College, as well as implementing and coordinating institutional and athletic brand images for Nicholls State. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts from Nicholls State University, a Master of Journalism from Louisiana State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and minor in Higher Education Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. She holds the designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and has also served on numerous not-for-profit boards of directors. Dr. Pennington is a native Louisianan and is married to Royce Pennington. She has two daughters, Taylor and Ashley and two stepchildren, Kyle and Kaitlin, as was well as four grandsons. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome in the coming weeks. CEO Jackie Alexander will be certainly missed, but we look forward to working with Dr. Pennington, as together we strive to ensure that girls take their rightful place as leaders in their communities, their country and the world.
Council to hold ground breaking for Camp Covington pool Join us on Sunday, January 6, from 2 – 4 p.m. as we break ground for an in-ground swimming pool at Camp Covington. The addition of a pool at our oldest camp is largely due to the grassroots fundraising efforts of our local volunteers and a $25,000 donation from a Girl Scout alum! A big thank you goes to our Girl Scout volunteers in Covington and other parts of the council who over the last five years raised over $40,000 for the camp to have a swimming pool. The 1,200-square-foot, rectangular swimming pool will be located on the north side of the dining hall, and include a 10-foot swim out (ledge for sitting), as well as a heater/cooler and lights. It will range from 3 feet to 8 feet deep and will also include a handicap ADA-lift. The pool will be available not only to Girl Scouts enjoying the camp, but we also hope to offer it as a location for community swimming lessons.

A ton of G.I.R.L. Power at the B.I.G. Event What do you call a person who can learn and master skills in chemical reactions, virtual reality, 3D printing, and still have time to make ice cream using liquid nitrogen all in one day? A G.I.R.L.! Nearly 1,600 Louisiana Girl Scouts explored a day of hands-on learning with STEM, Entrepreneurship, Life Skills and Outdoor activities at our Believe in G.I.R.L. (B.I.G.) Event at the University of New Orleans on September 29. Girls of all ages kicked-off the event with cheers, interacted with over 100 collaborative organizations, and were greeted by a helicopter that hovered around and landed right on campus by the women of the U.S. Coast Guard. Fireside chat
speakers: New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell; Tracee Dundas, Fashion Stylist and Executive Producer for New Orleans Fashion Week; Priscilla Joyner, Veterinarian at the Audubon Species Survival Center; Jana Ann Billiot, Chef de Cuisine of Restaurant R’evolution and Taylor Newton, FBI Staff Operations Specialist (SOS) all represented the power of G.I.R.L. in their careers and community, and provided motivational tips for the girls’ journey to leadership.

Girls learn building skills during McFadden Cabin revitalization Girl Scouts worked alongside professional builders and area craftsmen from the Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans (HBAGNO) and the Women in Building Council this past September, during the McFadden Cabin revitalization project in New Orleans City Park. The revitalization project provided the girls the perfect opportunity to meet female builders and learn about their craft and their careers. Located behind the New Orleans Museum of Art, McFadden Cabin was built in the 1920s by William
McFadden. The one-room building was gifted to the Girl Scouts in 1931 but has been been closed to Girl Scout groups in recent years due to structural issues and an aging septic system. The cabin now has new plumbing fixtures, interior walls, front doors and a new paint job.

2018 Cookie Program Highlights
connection
The Girl Scout Cookie Program: the Country’s Largest Financial Investment in Girls Not only is the Girl Scout Cookie Program the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program for girls in the world, it’s also the country’s largest financial investment in girls! At a time when less than eight cents of every dollar granted by philanthropic foundations funds girl and women programming, each and every Girl Scout Cookie purchase is key to supporting leadership development in girls! The Cookie Program teaches Girl Scouts essential skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics, proving to be a powerful entrepreneurship incubator for the next generation of female leaders. By participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls not only discover their inner leadership potential but also use their earnings to power amazing experiences for themselves, their troops and their community. From building a robot to exploring the outdoors, feeding the homeless or assisting the helpless, our Girl Scouts are doing remarkable things and making a difference. Supporting young female entrepreneurs just got tastier with the debut of our newest cookie: the Girl Scout Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie. This chewy gluten-free cookie features rich caramel, semisweet chocolate chips, with a hint of sea salt. We are thrilled to be able to offer it in limited quantities during booth sales.

Low Festivals and Duck Derby, which expanded from one camp to two in 2018. Activities included canoeing, nature walks, pony rides and low ropes (Camp Marydale), rock climbing (Camp Whispering Pines), making SWAPS, archery, face painting and more, in addition to cheering on their duck in the Duck Derby. The Camp Marydale winner of $250 in Duck Dough to be used in the shop, for camp or other program activities was Baton Rouge Girl Scout Brownie Teagan Jillson, while Brownie Kathleen Elmer of Metairie was the lucky duck at CWP. A big thank you to festival participants and duck adopters who supported these Annual Giving fundraisers! Festival proceeds benefit the participant’s GSLE camp of choice and is also applied to the service unit’s Annual Family Giving goal.
In Memoriam Girl Scout Senior Kristina Corcoran, age 16, of Slidell, passed away last week, following a battle with cancer. Kristina, a member of Troop 30044, had been a Girl Scout for 10 years, and according to her long-time troop leader, loved everything about Girl Scouting, especially being in the outdoors. Special memories including her enjoyment of sitting around the campfire to traveling with her troop in “Clifford, the big red van.” Kristina was always the epitome of courage, confidence and character, even when at the lowest points of her illness and treatment. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.
