The Girl Scout Mission

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Take Action — the girls engage in activities that make a difference in the world The processes of girl led, learning by doing, and cooperative learning are integrated into the activities (what girls do). The processes (how girls do it) create an environment of fun and friendship for girls and their leaders/advisors, and determine the quality of the experience, which makes Girl Scouting unique, thus further enabling the development of leadership skills for the 21st century Girl Scout.

Program Power 2009 – 2010

Inspiration is on every page for our girls! Program Power is always a collection of fun activities and workshops that are inspired by the requests of our girls from the previous year. This year we’ve added more programs for our younger girls to meet requirements as they work towards earning their age level awards. We’ve heard our older girl’s requests to offer more activities and trips they can do on their own (outside the troop) to meet their individual interests. We also will be adding more online survey options for our girls so they can share their ideas and suggestions as to what program options the council can add for them to enjoy. Did you know that Girl Scouts Louisiana East has been given the honor to participate as a pilot council in three new Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) initiatives: Global Advocacy, Forever Green, and Relational Aggression & Cyberbullying? That means our girls have a unique opportunity to make their ideas and voices heard by being part of programs that GSUSA is developing and will roll out nationally in the next couple of years. What an honor for our girls! To learn about these opportunities check the “Go Green” and “Become a Voice for Girls” pages in this publication. Find out how you and your girls can improve their local environment by participating in community service projects. You can find even more ideas to inspire your girls to improve their environment by camping overnight or participating in a day outing at one of our four properties or in their Try-It, Badge, Interest Project, Focus books or in the new It’s Your Planet–Love It! Journey book series. Many of the program activities listed in this guide and found on the “Activities/Events” section of the council website may be attended by individual girls. Depending on the program, the event registration form may need to be mailed or faxed to the organization providing the program or event and not to the council’s Program department. Be sure to check for the registration deadlines, and enclose a deposit or fee if required. Not every program registration will be the same, so remember to follow the specific instructions given. The Program team will be adding activities throughout the year and new program information will be included in the council’s monthly email newsletter, the Just for Girls newsletter, or on the council website at www.gsle.org. You can also check the status of program activities weekly by calling our Program hotline at 1-800-644-7571, ext. 2231. The hotline is updated every week to keep you informed on the status of programs coming up in the next two weeks or if an event has been cancelled due to severe weather. We invite your troop to take a moment and choose the activities that inspire them to gain courage, confidence, and character, and make the world a better place! Yours in Girl Scouting,

FAQs

Program Frequently Asked Questions Who can participate in Girl Scout events? There are opportunities for registered Girl Scouts ages 517 to be involved in Girl Scouting as members of a troop, group, or as Juliettes who are individually registered Girl Scouts.

Do adult chaperones pay for program events?

When fees are listed per girl, adults do not have to pay for the event. When fees are listed per person, any individual attending the event must pay the fee.

What is the leader’s responsibility for the event if the whole troop attends?

Who do I contact if I have questions about the program activity? Under each program there is a contact person listed that will be able to answer questions about the event.

Who do I contact if I want to see if I’m registered for the event? If you need to check to see if your registration or payment was received you can contact the Program Assistant at (504) 733-8220, ext. 2256, or email program@gsle.org.

Is financial aid available for programs? Girls in troops are encouraged to plan for program attendance and set product sales goals accordingly. In addition, girls may apply for full or partial scholarships to attend program events. The Program Financial Assistance Request Form is available in the forms section of this publication and on the website at www.gsle.org.

When does registration open and close? How are council program events filled? Listed under each program offering is a registration open and deadline date. Registration is open until the maximum number of participants is reached or the deadline date arrives, whichever occurs first. If by 4 p.m. on the opening date the council has received more registrations than the maximum number of participants for that event, a random drawing will be held to select the participants. In order for your registration to be processed the full amount of the fee must be included with the registration.

The leaders must provide a sufficient number of adults to meet Safety-Wise ratios. They must also ensure that there is a currently certified first aider, a First Aid kit, the original permission slip for each girl, completed Health History Record for each girl, completed Health History for each adult, and items listed in event or confirmation description. The leader is still responsible for monitoring her troop/group’s behavior and actions.

Will I receive confirmation of our participation in a council-sponsored event? Yes. A confirmation goes to the troop leader, adult in charge, or individual registering prior to the event with directions and instructions for the event (usually by email). Make sure that information is distributed to troop members who are attending the event.

What is the refund policy? A 100% refund is made only when the council cancels the event. A partial refund of the total event fee is made if the Program Assistant is notified with a written letter two weeks before the event registration deadline date. Leaders may substitute another registered Girl Scout for one who is absent. All refunds are made to the troop in care of the leader two to four weeks after the event date. Refunds made to registered individuals will be sent to the guardian of the registered girl. Fees are not refunded for no-show troops and/or girls. Please note that events are not cancelled due to weather unless conditions are severe.

Is there a wait-list for a “FULL” event? Yes. Once an event reaches capacity we file registrations in the order they are received (unless there is a need for a lottery). If a space becomes available we would contact the next registrant on the list.

Program Power 2009 – 2010

How do we ensure that girls have a safe and enjoyable time at events? All events are planned according to Girl Scout Safety-Wise standards. Please adhere to Safety-Wise at all Girl Scout programs (i.e. using the buddy system, etc.).

I don’t have a computer. How can I check a programs status? You can check the status of the current week’s program activities by calling our Program Hotline at 1-800-6447571, ext. 2231. The hotline is updated every week to keep everyone informed on programs being held in two week intervals or if an event has been cancelled due to severe weather or unforeseen circumstances.

How will I know that an event has been cancelled? If you are attending an event hosted by the council and it is cancelled the adult listed on the event registration form will be notified by phone. We will also update the Activity & Events Calendar on the council website and the Program Hotline.

Are the Highest Awards workshops required for my girls to complete their awards? Yes. The council requires that all girls and troop leaders interested in going for their level’s highest award to attend the workshop prior to starting any of their project steps. These workshops provide girls and troop leaders the information of what is and isn’t considered an approved project, a Q & A session, and list of projects that have already been completed, and presentation of by previous awardees (only if girls are available). Note: girls/troops will not be given approval of potential topics or projects at these workshops.

Are Badges included? No. It is the responsibility of the leader or parent to purchase Try-its, Badges, Interest Project patches, and Charms that were earned.

www.GSLE.org

Can troop leaders or parents attend Cadette-Ambassador and Council Destination events? Depends. Most older girl events are designed for individual girl participation in keeping with Girl Scouting’s goal of fostering independence and leadership. For these events, Safety-Wise ratio adult chaperones are provided by the council. However, some events are open to leader/parent participation, and details can be found in each event’s Notes section. For more information contact Claire Dudenhefer at (225) 927-8946, ext. 1223 or cdudenhefer@gsle.org.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience From the very beginning, Girl Scouting has been about developing girls’ leadership. Now we’re doing it better than ever with national, outcomes-based program activities that give girls the specific knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that will make them leaders in their own lives and in their communities. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience engages girls in discovering themselves, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place. These three leadership keys, Discover, Connect, Take Action, are intentionally designed to tie to one or more of the 15 national leadership outcomes (benefits). In Girl Scouting, it’s not just “what girls do” (activities), but “how” (processes) they do them (activities) that when used together, impact girls. These processes are Girl Led, Cooperative Learning, and Learning by Doing. What is a Girl Scout journey? A Girl Scout journey represents a new way that girls can experience Girl Scouting. It is a fun and challenging experience spread over a series of sessions (usually 6-8 but with the potential to last far longer). The journey, which follows a designated theme, has a clear starting point (an invitation to explore and take action) and a definite ending point (opportunities to enjoy closure through reflections, rewards, and celebration). Along the way, girls are following a purposeful trail that allows them to have fun, get wiser, and experience all the joys of being a traveler (meeting

new people, exploring new tastes and cultures, gathering keepsakes, making memories) while being able to carry this all in one “suitcase”–their journey book. Journey books take girls at every grade level through a series of Discover, Connect, and Take Action experiences, with emphasis on inviting girls to “Take Action” on issues they care about. These books also contain stories; inspirational ideas; information about Girl Scout history, traditions, and values; facts and games; and provide space for girls to collect their own ideas and memories. “How to” books—or guides for adult volunteers—that correspond to each of the girl books have also been created. These guides offer plenty of support, including sample sessions to tailor with girls, to help carry out the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. All grade-level girl books cost $7. The adult sets, consisting of a girl book packaged with the adult guide, are $15. It is ideal for every girl to have her own book to fully experience the journey. What journey materials are currently available? The first books for girls are all part of the It’s Your World—Change It! series of leadership journeys and features one book for girls at each age level in Girl Scouting, along with accompanying awards and merchandise available in both council shops. Girl Scouts’ newest journey takes leadership to a new level with the Earth-friendly theme of It’s Your Planet—Love It! The series includes: Between Earth and Sky (for Daisies), WOW! (i.e. Wonders of Water for Brownies), Get Moving! (for Juniors), Breathe! (for Cadettes), Sow What? (for Seniors), Justice (for Ambassadors). Each journey has girls using their leadership skills for the good of the earth and all its inhabitants, tackling issues like preserving the world’s water supply, creating innovations in energy usage, how our food network and food choices impact the environment, and even

Program Power 2009 – 2010

forming an equation for what it will take to bring about environmental justice in the world. In every journey girls accept a challenge to take the lead in protecting the planet. The books’ activities include outdoor adventures, handson science investigations and opportunities to “meet” prominent women and girls who are at work around the world on behalf of the environment. As girls journey through the challenges in the books, they earn Girl Scouting’s new leadership pins and badges. Existing program resources still good Existing books, handbooks, and Focus books remain available and viable Girl Scout resources. Girls may continue using them based on their interests. Girls are welcome to continue choosing and earning badges that represent their varied interests. Earning badges is an important tradition in Girl Scouting and it is here to stay! As adults and girls become more familiar with the elements of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, they will even be able to see how the Discover, Connect, and Take Action leadership keys can be integrated into earning badges. No matter what activities girls do in Girl Scouting, the experience is always best when it incorporates the Girl Scout processes: Girl Led, Learning by Doing, and Cooperative Learning. What are the new grade levels? New membership levels were created to provide increased differentiation and advancement as girls experience Girl Scouting. The levels are:

Girl Scout Daisies – (Grades K-1) Girl Scout Brownies – (Grades 2-3) Girl Scout Juniors – (Grades 4-5) Girl Scout Cadettes – (Grades 6-8) Girl Scout Seniors – (Grades 9-10) Girl Scout Ambassadors – (Grades 11-12)

Can girls earn new awards with the It’s Your Planet-Love It! journeys? Yes, Girl Scouts at each of the levels have a chance to earn new official awards as they complete steps along the journey. Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes have the chance to earn several badges along the journey. Seniors and Ambassadors can mark their accomplishments at the culmination of a journey with a pin or iron-on.

www.GSLE.org

The steps for earning the awards are clearly explained in the “how-to” books for volunteers created for each journey. Girls have information about the awards in their books, too. The journey books for girls and adults also have suggested reflection and ceremony ideas related to earning the awards. The goal is to provide opportunities for girls to fully understand and celebrate the achievement and growth the awards represent. What does the new two-year Daisy experience offer girls in K-1? Adults guiding Daisies are encouraged to follow the many tips and suggestions in the “how-to” adult guide that accompanies each level in the journeys. For K-1, the It’s Your Planet—Love It! journey is titled “Between Earth and Sky.” In this journey, Girl Scout Daisies join their flower friends for an exciting road trip in a flower-powered car, experiencing what’s great about what grows near them and learning how their own special skills make the world a better place. In addition to the journeys, Girl Scout Daisies can continue using existing Daisy resources and earn Daisy Petals, if they choose. Girl Scout Daisies may now participate in both the council-sponsored Fall Product Sale and the Girl Scout Cookie Sale. What will be special for the new Ambassador level? How will girls bridge? The newest leadership journey for Ambassadors, Justice, tackles the engaging global issue of environmental justice by giving girls the opportunity to create their own equation for justice. From scientists and doctors to lawyers and environmentalists, their journey is rich with eye-opening career possibilities — all focused on caring and collaborative work that helps both people and the planet. When they have completed the steps to justice, they will earn the new Justice “Sage” Award pin created especially for girls at this level. A new bridging rainbow patch is now available for Ambassadors, and girls who began the Ambassador level last year may earn this award retroactively.

Go Green! Girl Scouts Forever Green

Girl Scouts Louisiana East has been selected to participate in a national community action project, Forever Green! Join us as we help girls develop and use their leadership skills to impact the environment in their schools and communities to improve air quality, energy use, water use, waste management, and use of green space. To help prepare for and celebrate our upcoming 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in 2012, we are asking you to commit to an earth friendly project over the next three years. Girl Scouts have always been “green” and we want to make sure we stay “forever green!” Here are some ways that you can help this cause:

Environmental Awareness

Through Girl Scouting, girls see the earth as their home. Whether they’re learning about endangered wildlife, developing creative recycling projects, or working towards such earned level awards as the Environmental Health Badge or the Eco-Action Interest Project Award, girls focus on care, conservation, and responsibility and ensure the safety of our planet for future generations. Get out in your community and help us “Go green” by participating in the following events listed in the “Community Service” section of this guide. Remember to wear a Girl Scout t-shirt to show the community that Girl Scouts care about their community by “Taking Action:”

Start a No Idling program at your school.

Start a walk to school program – count how many miles you walk in a week instead of always jumping in the car.

Arbor Day events at Camp Covington and Camp Marydale, pg. 47

Start a recycling program at your school. Recycle paper you would ordinarily throw in the trash.

Barataria Terrebonne National Estuary Program Beach Sweep, pg. 61

Bayou Rebirth Girl Scout Planting Day, pg. 28

Talk to your principals about only using washable dishes at lunch, no more plastic or Styrofoam.

Girl Scout Earth Day at City Park 2010, pg. 42

Plant a garden and harvest the vegetables.

Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful 2009 Great American Clean up, pg. 61

Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation Beach Sweep, pg. 61

These are just a few ideas to help get you thinking! Be creative with your ideas and make sure you will be making a sustainable impact on your community, school or home! Please email your project ideas to forevergreen@gsle.org. Follow up information will be sent to you via email. We want to make sure we track our efforts and send all of our information in to the Girl Scouts national headquarters so they can present a final report to the nation when we celebrate our 100th anniversary. Additional collaborator information will be sent to you as well. This is a very exciting project for Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scouts Louisiana East! A few of the collaborators on board already are General Electric, The Disney Nature Group, Waste Management, Whole Foods, and more! Please continue to check the website under the “Forever Green” link. All information will be posted and updated on a regular basis.

Here are some other ways our troops can develop a keen environmental awareness throughout the year:

My Planet game

Girl Scout Daisies – Juniors can create their own air-friendly environment while completing this fun computer game on Go Girls Only – GSUSA website. The girls will learn how to test the purity of water, air, and the impact of these elements with the combination of the sun and how they can negatively or positively affect our planet. Girls can play the “My Planet” game at www. gogirlsonly.org/games/my_planet.asp

Trees for the 21st Century

This easy-to-use tree planting and education toolkit from ERTHNXT connects children and young people to the wonders of trees and the outdoors. Includes science-based activities designed for adults working with children and youth ages 6 to 18. As the children learn why and how to plant trees, activities reinforce the value and importance of ongoing care and encourage youth stewardship. To learn more about “Trees for the 21st Century” and to order supplies to use with your troop visit the following website: http://erthnxt.org/programs/ trees21.html

www.GSLE.org

Become a Voice for Girls! Join the Girl Scouts Advocacy Network

Join The Girl Scouts Advocacy Network, the first ever Girl Scouts grassroots network (www.girlscouts4girls.org). Together, we can educate policy makers and community leaders on issues that directly affect girls and the Girl Scouts. By being an advocate, you will have an impact on girl policy issues moving through Congress and the state legislatures. To join, simply register at www.girlscouts4girls.org and become part of a collective voice in the Girl Scout Movement that responds to policy issues that impact girls and Girl Scouts.

Going Global

In 2008 Girl Scouts Louisiana East was selected to partner with the Girl Guides in Africa and the national organization, Girl Scouts of the USA, in a five-year pilot program that pairs Girl Scouts from San Diego, Louisiana, and Vermont with their Girl Guide peers in Nairobi, Kenya. The council’s global advocacy group made up of girls ages 14 to 17, will focus on leadership with participants using the topic of HIV/AIDS to immerse themselves in leadership development and how to become successful youth advocates. Last spring four members of the Louisiana group traveled to the United Nations where as representatives of the national Girl Scout organization, they, along with eight other Girl Scouts, participated in the 53rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women held at UN headquarters in New York. For more information, please contact Claire Dudenhefer at (225) 927-8946, ext. 1223.

Take on Relational Aggression and Cyberbullying

Girl Scouts Louisiana East and Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf, have joined forces on a new Live Healthy, Lead Healthy Policy and Advocacy Initiative, and were recently selected by the Girl Scouts of the USA to be an Advocacy Champion. The two councils are in the process of looking for community partners to join in building awareness and educating the state’s residents about relational aggression and cyberbullying, looking for policy solutions to the problem as well as ways to stop and/or prevent this serious problem. Did you know that almost 30 percent of young people in the United States are estimated to be involved in bullying, either as a bully, a target, or both? Additionally most teens think that bullying online is easier to get away with and to hide from their parents than bullying in person. As we research the effects relational aggression and cyberbullying have on girls, several online surveys have been created for girls to complete. As troops meet this fall, please encourage girls to complete one or more of the surveys but only after completing the council’s Internet Safety Pledge located at www.gsle.org/forgirls/ safetypledge.asp. For more information about this advocacy initiative, please contact Marianne Addy at (504) 733-8220, ext. 2226. The council is in the process of planning activities around November 15 - 21, 2009, the seventh annual Bullying Awareness Week. Its theme is “Stand Up To Bullying.”

LMK Online Safety Program

LMK (text-speak for “let me know”) is an online safety campaign created in partnership with Girl Scouts of the USA and Microsoft Windows. The campaign includes an interactive website for girls at http://lmk.girlscouts.org, as well as an e-newsletter and website for adults at http://letmeknow.girlscouts.org. Each month, an all-girl editorial board explores a different internet safety topic online and then shares what they learned in the e-newsletter which is distributed to adults the following month.

2009 – 2010 Product Sale Information

Participating in the fall product and cookie sales teaches girls valuable life skills such as goal setting, time management, how to handle money responsibly, teamwork, public speaking, and follow through on a commitment. Additionally, proceeds from the sales enable girls to support the troop and fund their troop activities, as well provide for upkeep of council properties, leadership training, and other council-wide initiatives. In order to participate in money-earning activities, a girl must be a registered member of Girl Scouts. All age levels, including Daisies, may participate in the sales. Participation is voluntary.

Fall Product Sale

Girl Scouts Louisiana East is sponsoring a Fall Product Sale of nuts, candies, and magazines! The Fall Product Sale is a “Friends and Family Campaign” which means no door-to-door or booth sales. This is a great way for troops/ groups to earn start-up money so that they may more easily participate in program activities in the fall! Twelve different products for sale (ranging from $5 to $6) are being offered, including a collectible Girl Scout tin filled with mint meltaways! All orders are pre-paid, and the troop earns $1 for every food item sold, $2 for every address booklet (only one per girl) completed, and $2 for every magazine sold. This year the girls will become Girl Scout Investigators (GSI) as they join “Snoops” the dog and his friends find clues and unlock a mystery. As the girls participate in the sale they will earn troop proceeds and individual girl sellers will receive incentives ranging from the “GSI interlocking patches,” a t-shirt that reveals a secret message in the sunlight, a mini safe to keep their personal items, to the 12” “Snoops” hound dog. When: Orders taken Friday, October 2 – Sunday, October 25, 2009. Girls deliver the orders in November, and since the money is pre-collected, the troop receives their proceeds immediately. Who: Girl Scout Daisies – Ambassadors registered by September 1, 2009.

Cookie Sale

Over 90 years old, the Girl Scout Cookie Sale has evolved into the nation’s premier business and economic literacy initiative. Many successful businesswomen today say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies. By participating, girls practice useful life skills like planning, decision-making, and customer service. During cookie activities, girls are members of a team working towards a common goal, with each girl striving to do her best. Booth Sales are a great way to increase sales at the troop level! This year’s theme is “Inspired by U.” Keep a look out for more information on cookie program offerings that will allow your girls to showcase their inspiration. When: Cookie pre-order begins Friday, January 15, 2010 and ends Sunday, January 31, 2010. Older Girl Scouts are ready to make their mark on the world and make a difference in their community through their words and actions. But they still want to have fun and make friends along the way. The journey books provide girls the opportunity to navigate personal relationships in the best and most productive ways, envision an ideal world, and how to become advocates in their communities. So encourage your girls to come up with their community action plan and make their mark! Please take notice that unless otherwise stated adults are not allowed to attend Older Girl Programs. This is done to foster independence and leadership amongst Older Girls. Adult volunteers may be needed to meet Safety-Wise ratios. If you are interested in being an adult volunteer for a program or trip please contact Claire Dudenhefer at cdudenhefer@gsle.org.

New Orleans Opera Association Night at the Opera Girl Scout Cadettes – Ambassadors The New Orleans Opera Association has offered tickets to Girl Scout troops to attend the dress rehearsal for the upcoming operas. Each of these operas is very different in its presentation styles and will offer girls a unique insight into the beauty of the world of opera. As a mandatory prerequisite for the performances the council is offering an opera orientation that will allow the girls and leaders to know what to expect when attending any of the opera performances. Girls will be oriented on proper dress, etiquette, and a synopsis of the show that they will be attending. If a girl has attended a previous councilsponsored orientation, it is not necessary for her to repeat this. She may review the synopsis with her leader instead. We hope to see you there as the red curtain rises! Tosca – by Giacomo Puccini (in Italian with English supertitles*) Puccini’s beloved work was premiered in Rome 100 years after the events of the opera supposedly took place in the Eternal City. Set during the turbulent Napoleonic wars, this melodrama seethes with both romantic and political passion. Heartbreaking arias, soaring duets and powerful choruses combine in this verismo masterpiece. Roméo et Juliette – by Charles Gounod (in French with English subtitles*) Gounod’s opera debuted at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in 1867, eight years after Faust. The composer again turned to a great work of literature – Shakespeare’s timeless drama of doomed love between two teenagers from rival families in 14thcentury Verona. Gounod lavished on this score a sure hand with a distinctively French touch, creating some of his most beautifully memorable music. Bayou Rebirth Girl Scout Planting Day Girl Scouts ages 13–17 Are you ready to get your hands dirty as you take action to save the Earth? Join Bayou Rebirth for this planting project that goes way beyond any planting project you know of. Girls will gain first hand knowledge of the importance of coastal preservation as well as experience the intensive efforts required to implement strategies designed to preserve coastal wetlands. Several requirements for two (2) different Interest Projects (Eco-Action and Plant Life) will be completed during this project as girls will propagate and grow their own wetlands grasses before trekking out into the bayou to plant them in marshes that have been destroyed due to salt water intrusion and Hurricane Katrina. Camp Marydale’s Wrangler/Spur Program Wranglers

Spurs

Girls 14 and older

Girls 12–13

Ride’em cowgirl! Would you like to share your riding skills and knowledge of horses with younger girls? If you are 14 and older and LOVE horses, come be a part of the Girl Scouts Louisiana East’s Wrangler Program. You will be paired with adult mentors to teach Western horseback riding workshops at Camp Marydale to troops and service units. Wranglers also help out with special weekend events such as Daisy Day, Love, Hug & Groom, and Holiday Horse Rider Core Camp.

Are horses your thing? If so, get ready to saddle up and learn all about your favorite animals. If you are age 12 to 13, LOVE horses, and aren’t afraid to get dirty, get ready to take a special “behind the scenes” look at Girl Scouts Louisiana East’s Wrangler Program. Spurs will have the opportunity to “shadow” a member of the Wrangler Program to learn what it takes to be a Wrangler.

How much time does it take? Wranglers meet the second Tuesday of each month at the Council Regional Service Center in Baton Rouge to get up-to-date information about the horses, equipment and events at Camp Marydale. Wranglers are expected to participate in two or three weekends per semester and Wrangler Training Weekends that are scheduled twice a year, in September and January. All New Wranglers are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur weekend trainings before they are allowed to work any other weekends. What is a Wrangler Weekend? These weekends are held at Camp Marydale and are designed to provide you with the opportunity to improve your basic horsemanship and riding skills, and give you a chance to get to know the other girls in the program. You will also have an opportunity to meet with horse care professionals and professional trainers. This is also the time to test to move up to a higher level. All New Wranglers are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur weekend trainings before they are allowed to work any other weekends. Wrangler Adults are also needed! As with all programs we have to have enough adults working with the girls each weekend according to Safety-Wise ratios.

www.GSLE.org

Girls who participate in the Spur Program are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur Training Weekend before you will be allowed to attend any other weekend. The New Wrangler/Spur Training Weekends, held each September and January, will provide you with the opportunity to improve your horsemanship, riding skills, horse care, and a lot more. All Spurs must have a Spur Mom (two girls to one adult) attend camp with them on the weekend they sign up to work or they will not be able to attend that weekend. *Spurs are not eligible for advancement beyond Entry Level until they turn 14 years old. If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a Wrangler or a Spur, contact Donna Dupré in the Program Department at (225) 927-8946, ext. 1253 or ddupre@gsle.org.

Council Properties Camping has long been rated a favorite activity shared by both girl and adult Girl Scouts throughout the Louisiana area. Our council owns four outdoor facilities that are each unique in its own way and offer unlimited program opportunities for outdoor activities. Camp Marydale in St. Francisville and Camp Whispering Pines in Independence serve as our summer resident camps. Along with Camp Covington, they offer both day and overnight uses for our troops and service units throughout the school year. Day use facilities also include McFadden Cabin located in New Orleans’ City Park. The following descriptions will help you in choosing the right facility for your next outdoor adventure.

Camp Covington

Camp Whispering Pines

Recognized by the American Camp Association as a “Pioneer of Camping” site, Camp Covington is one of the oldest Girl Scout camps in use in the United States. This 23-acre site located on the Bogue Falaya River near Covington is open for day use and camping with platform tent and cabin units available. A newly renovated dining hall (nearly complete), fire circles, and frisbee disk course are just some of the improvements made to the camp in the last year. The sandy-bottomed Bogue Falaya remains a perfect spot for wading.

Camp Marydale Camp Marydale is a 400-acre site, offering year round camping with a multi-purpose building/dining hall, cabin units, and a large lodge for activities. There is a sports field; a low ropes challenge course, several hiking trails, and a swimming pool. A herd of horses are housed in a large barn, with two riding arenas. One arena is covered to offer program in an area more climate controlled.

48

Camp Whispering Pines is a 600-acre site located in Independence, LA. The site is heavily forested with pine and river area hardwoods. Many well established trails wind through the widely-scattered campsites. The waterfront is diverse at Camp Whispering Pines: a 23-acre lake is available for boating; a Junior Olympic-sized pool is available for swimming; the Tangipahoa River borders the property; Indian Creek meanders through the back section of the camp. Camp Whispering Pines also offers program opportunities at its high ropes challenge course and rock climbing wall.

McFadden Cabin McFadden Cabin is located in City Park behind the New Orleans Museum of Art and is used for day use only. The cabin is very popular in the early fall and late spring for ceremonies, first day outings, and art programs so booking early is highly recommended!

Camping & Outdoor Program Camping on Non-Council Sites

Resident Camp at Council Camps

Sites and facilities must meet all Safety-Wise standards. Other Girl Scout camps, State and National Parks are often a good camping alternative to a council facility. Troop/groups wanting to camp at any other camping venue other than another Girl Scout camp, State or National Park, must receive prior approval from their Service Unit Administrator and Membership Executive.

Resident Camp sessions are conducted at council camps with sessions running three to 13 days in June and July. Girls register as individuals and may participate in general or specialized programs. In specialized sessions, the girls may select a program that emphasizes general activities, horseback riding, country living, or water fun. Camp brochures are mailed to each Girl Scout household in February.

Day Use of Council Facilities A day-long outing is an important step in the outdoor progression for girls. A full day at Camp Covington, Camp Marydale, or Camp Whispering Pines can include: hikes; outdoor cooking; water activities; nature exploration; and evening campfires. At McFadden Cabin, girls enjoy exploring nearby art exhibits, lagoons and ancient oak trees. All sites include: rakes, shovels, buckets, tables, benches, grills, and nearby water.

Day/Twilight Camp These special programs are held in the local community and are Service Unit sponsored and run by volunteer staff. The site may be council owned, leased, rented or borrowed. Day/Twilight Camping occurs during the summer months and is often a Girl Scout’s very first camping experience. Registration information should be available within your individual service unit. Information is available in the spring but for more information about your areas Day/Twilight camps or to volunteer contact your service unit.

Troop Camping Troop Camping is a troop experience of one or more nights in a camp setting planned and carried out by the girls and trained leaders of a troop/group. Council camps are available for troop camping during the week and on weekends (except during council-sponsored activities or camp closures). Reservations may be made at any time. However, weekends following school vacations and after the council product sales are very popular and reserve quickly.

Service Unit Camping This camping experience includes the entire service unit and is a great opportunity for new troops and newly trained outdoor leaders to practice their outdoor skills in a supportive environment. Service units may hold their encampments on council-owned property (highly suggested) or non-owned camp sites (see Camping on Non-Council Sites). It is up to the service unit team to schedule the dates and receive approval from their Membership Executive.

Outdoor Program Patches Several fun outdoor program patches are available for purchase for girls who utilize the council’s camp properties. See the council patch program listing in this publication or visit www.gsle.org for patch descriptions.

Frequently asked camping questions: We have a member that has physical limitations. Are their facilities available? If a member of your troop has physical limitations, be sure to describe the needs on the Camp Reservation Request form. When do we pay our camp fees? The $25 non-refundable deposit for troops and $100 nonrefundable deposit for service unit encampments must accompany the Camp Reservation Request form. To use McFadden Cabin an additional $25 key deposit is required when picking up the key from the council headquarters in Jefferson. The balance of the camp fee is due to the council office four weeks prior to the camping event. If the remaining balance is not in the council office four weeks in advance, the troop will forfeit the reservation to a standby troop.

What is the refund policy? The non-refundable deposit is only refunded when there is no space available. The balance of the camp fee is refundable only if a standby troop uses the site. Requests for refunds must be made in writing to: Attention: VP of Program, Girl Scouts Louisiana East, 841 S. Clearview Parkway, New Orleans, LA 70121. Full refunds are only given when the council officially cancels camping on that date. If weather does not warrant a cancellation, no refunds will be given. Camp is not cancelled due to rain or cold weather.

Would we have to share our unit? To maximize the use of bed space, more than one troop/group may be placed in your unit to fill the site to the maximum capacity. If this is the case, you will be notified who you will be sharing the unit with before the camping date. It is highly recommended that troops/groups contact one another prior to the weekend to make program arrangements, schedule cooking times, plan campfires, organize cleaning schedules, etc. For more FAQ’s visit the council website under the “Camping” tab.

(Let the Good Times Roll!), while you earn the patch by completing one activity from the 4L’s (Learn it, Look into it, Lend a hand, and Live it), that is the most appropriate for the age-level of the girls.

Polar Bear Patch Girl Scout Brownies – Ambassadors This patch is earned camping in tents when the temperature reaches 32 degrees or below. It can be earned by camping in primitive areas or tent units at Camp Covington, Camp Marydale or Camp Whispering Pines or an approved camp site. May be purchased at the Council Shop. Outdoor Program Progressive Patch Girl Scout Daisies – Ambassadors Visit a Girl Scouts Louisiana East camp and earn this 5–part fun patch. Complete each activity to receive each part of the patch. May be purchased at the Council Shop. Activity 1. Day Camping Activity 2. Cabin Camping Activity 3. Tent Camping Activity 4. Outdoor Cooking Activity 5. Hiking Read to Lead Louisiana Girl Scout Daisies – Ambassadors This patch program activity assists girls and adults to understand the importance of literary education and service. It is an expansion of the Issues for Girls Lead to Read program.

Hurricane Awareness Girl Scout Brownies – Ambassadors The Hurricane Awareness patch is a program created for Girl Scouts to learn about the effects of hurricanes and how to protect oneself and one’s community. Remember, you don’t have to be located on the coast to feel the effects of a hurricane. So get ready all of you amateur storm chasers and learn about the inner workings of this powerful storm by completing one activity from the 4L’s (Learn it, Look into it, Lend a hand, and Live it).

Rebuilding Our Community (ROC) Girl Scout Brownies – Ambassadors ROC (Rebuilding Our Community) is a patch program created for Girl Scouts affected by a natural disaster. Rebuilding communities is not all about bricks and mortar; it also includes people’s hopes and dreams. To earn the ROC patch, girls need to complete at least one activity in each of the 4L’s (Learn it, Look into it, Lend a hand, and Live it). This patch program is a little intense due to the nature of the subject.

Let’s Do It Again Girl Scout Daisies – Ambassadors A recycling patch program helping Girl Scouts of all age levels see the effect we can have in our community. Girl Scouts can work together to preserve our world for generations to come.

The Art of Jazz Girl Scout Brownies – Ambassadors This patch program will have you swinging, stomping, and dancing to the syncopated jazz beat! Learn why we call this rhythmic beat “Jazz,” and the get to know the musical icons that have made New Orleans the birthplace of Jazz!

I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight. —Juliette Gordon Low

Visit the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace with your Troop! “The Juliette Gordon Low Girl Scout National Center is located in downtown Savannah. It was the Gordon family home, and Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon, called Daisy, was born here on October 31, 1860. The town house, completed in 1821, is furnished as it was in 1886, the year of Daisy’s marriage, and the year her parents renovated and enlarged the house. Girl Scouts of the USA purchased the house in 1953. Since the dedication in 1956, it has been operated as a Girl Scout program center and historic house museum. It is one of the most popular house museums in the United States. In 1965, it was designated Savannah’s first National Historic Landmark. It is open to Girl Scout troops, groups and the general public. Many times during the year, Girl Scout troops have the good fortune to meet and share activities with Girl Scouts from other parts of the country. Visitors always include a mix of Girl Scouts in troops and their families, alumnae Girl Scouts and the touring public from all over the world!” —Press Release from Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace For more information about or how to plan a trip to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace contact: Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Girl Scouts of the USA 10 East Oglethorpe Avenue Savannah, Georgia 31401 Phone: (912) 233-4501 Fax: (912) 233-4659 Email: birthplace@girlscouts.org

Religious Awards Through Girl Scouting, each girl is encouraged to become a stronger member of her own religious denomination, and every Girl Scout group recognizes that religious instruction is the responsibility of parents and religious leaders. Religious award programs are always developed and administered by religious groups themselves. If provided with a religious pin, the recipient may wear it on her uniform, either on her badge sash below the membership stars or on the right side of her uniform, level with her membership pin. Work on religious recognitions should be done outside the troop meeting. A special meeting should be called if a large number of girls in the troop want to work on a particular religious award program. Individual girls work with an advisor to complete this award. Religious awards are earned by girls with the guidance of their leader and pastor, priest, rabbi or other spiritual leader. This provides a wonderful opportunity for personal and spiritual growth.

Trane BTU CrewTM Energy Efficiency Program

careers and ways to take action. Girls will be given the opportunity to discover more about energy, connect with the environment, and take action to preserve precious resources. These lessons are designed to be easy-to-use and adaptable to the needs of your group.

Girl Scout Daisies – Ambassadors Do you know what consumes energy? And what the greatest contributor to global warming is? Sixty percent of all energy is used in buildings like the school or community building where your Girl Scout troop meets. The energy from lights, windows and heating and air conditioning that you’re currently using is the single greatest contributor to global warming! Your troop can make a difference now! Over the course of six lessons, troops will learn about energy – what energy really is, how to conserve it,

Contact: Krista Danos at (504) 733-6789 or kdanos@trane.com if you are interested in running the program with your troop. She will provide you with hard copies of the student and leader guides – free of charge – and potentially connect you with an employee in your area that is interested in working with you through the lessons; in particular, the careers and energy audit portion. Once you complete the lessons, you can send a copy of the audit results and the completed evaluation form to Krista, who will provide you with the patches for your troop!

Safety First! Your local Sheriff's department can be a great resource to have. The following contacts are more than willing to assist troops where possible to provide practical community service opportunities, arrange for an officer to attend a meeting to give a safety presentation, assist with events, or direct you to the proper authority for further assistance with other challenges. Girl Scouts Louisiana East would like to thank these and all our men and women who dedicate their lives to ensure our safety. Parish

Training Guide and Schedule Congratulations on making a great decision to become a Girl Scout volunteer. For those of you continuing your involvement with our organization, thank you! Volunteers are the heart of Girl Scouting, and without leaders, Girl Scouts would not be able to help girls develop into tomorrow’s leaders.

What training is required? The Girl Scouts Louisiana East Board of Directors requires all volunteers with primary responsibility for working with girls be trained for the position they will assume or have assumed. Training is divided into two categories: Basic and Enrichment.

If you are:

Take these course(s):

A new or experienced leader (O1) or assistant leader (O2) A registered adult taking a troop on a day outing A registered adult taking a troop on an overnight camping trip to a Council property A registered adult taking a troop on an overnight camping trip (not Council property)

GS Leadership Essentials

Basic Training includes a course on the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience with its three keys to leadership (which replace the four program goals). Enrichment classes go beyond the basics and help enhance the leader’s interaction with the girls. At Girl Scouts Louisiana East we want to prepare our adult leaders to facilitate learning for the girls the best way possible. We hope to tap into your special talents and abilities to create a wonderful experience for you and the girls. A list of scheduled training courses is published here as well as online and distributed periodically to all Girl Scout volunteers. The training schedule includes course descriptions, scheduled dates/times, locations, registration deadlines, fees (if any), and prerequisites. Check Safety-Wise for further information about training requirements. Pre-registration is required for all courses, and only currently registered members of Girl Scouts of the USA may participate in training sessions. Not all courses are listed in this publication – for other trainings including some of the administrative volunteer trainings, please visit the council website’s training section at www.gsle.org. For additional questions, please contact Matthew Chustz, Adult Development Director, at (225) 927-8946, ext. 1224 or mchustz@gsle.org.

www.GSLE.org

First Aid & Adult/Child CPR (Level I First Aid) Troop Camping I which consists of two sessions: A) in classroom B) overnight in a camping setting Troop Camping II – Advanced Camping Skills or Troop Camping III – Backpacking or Troop Camping IV – Trekking

Have you completed your volunteer orientation? Volunteers who work directly with girls must complete online orientation provided by Girl Scouts of the USA at http://training.girlscouts.org, password: discover (must be lower case), along with orientation that covers council policies and procedures provided by a Service Unit team member, Membership Executive, or designated person, prior to attending a training course. Leaders (O1s and O2s), Troop Camping Consultants, Product Sales Consultants and some program volunteers must complete a volunteer application, have a letter of appointment, and complete support training prior to any volunteer job-related training listed here.

How do I register for training? Select the course and sign up one of two ways — online using our Online Training Registration System at www. gsle.org (preferred method) or by completing the Training Registration form in the forms section of this publication and returning it along with any payments. Read the course descriptions to determine what courses you need to take. Check for prerequisites and any other requirements. Be sure to plan ahead for what you might need later in the year. Pre-registration is mandatory because space is limited, trainings are sometimes cancelled, or details change and we will need to contact you.

Girl Scout Leadership Essentials Training With the launch of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience in fall 2008, this training introduces both new and experienced leaders to our new outcomes-based program and how its activities are designed to develop the girls of today to be the leaders of tomorrow. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience includes the elements of the leadership model which are: activities, processes, short-term and intermediate outcomes, and long-term outcomes. The program activities are organized around the Girl Scout three keys to leadership and are based on the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law. ¬ Discover – the girls explore their values, skills and world. ¬ Connect – they engage in teaming up and relating with others in a multicultural world. ¬ Take Action – the girls engage in activities that NO. make a difference in the world. The processes of girl led, learning by doing, and cooperative, learning are integrated into the activities (what girls do). The processes (how girls do it) create an environment of fun and friendship for girls, determine the quality of the experience, and make Girl Scouting unique, thus further enabling the development of leadership skills. This training will help leaders work with girls as they progress through any of the Journeys which are the new books now available. Training objectives include:

¬ Explain the meaning of the three keys of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. ¬ Demonstrate how to use resources to support the delivery of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, including the Journeys with accompanying Adult Guides. ¬ Describe how to facilitate activities so they are girl-led, cooperative, and learn-by-doing. ¬ Convey the value of being purposeful in one’s leadership. Required for: All new and experienced leaders Prerequisites: Completion of GSUSA Online orientation at http://training.girlscouts.org, password: discover (must be lower case), Council support training and signed letter of appointment. Bring: Leader Resource Guide and Safety-Wise. Fee: None Capacity: Minimum 5/Maximum 30 DATE

Program Power 2009 – 2010

Troop Camping Training Welcome to Troop Camping! We offer several troop camping courses, so as you and the girls progress from camping at one of our camp properties to a trip farther away, you are properly prepared for a safe and fun experience. Troop Camping I consists of two sessions - a session in the classroom followed by another session overnight in a camping setting. Course topics include health and safety considerations for camping with groups, budgeting,

group dynamics in the out-of-doors, progression, program and environmental activities, outdoor skills and minimal impact camping. Emphasis is placed on learning to teach skills to girls. Remember every troop must have a trained Troop Camping Consultant before planning for a day outing with a cookout or a camping trip. Progression is the critical component to guide girls in outdoor education — we want them to be self-sufficient with trained guidance.

Troop Camping I

Save the Date – November 13-15, 2009 Leaders’ Lagniappe Weekend

This training consists of two sessions that must be completed in order to be qualified to take a troop on a camping trip for up to two nights at Camp Marydale or Whispering Pines. Troop Camping I sessions are grouped together to facilitate an efficient training experience, and the two sessions must be taken together in the correct order. The Friday night portion of Troop Camping I – B is optional, but the participant will have an opportunity to learn night games and observe creative methods of preparing meals. Additional training is needed for extended trips or trips beyond the council’s properties.

Plans are in the works for a Leaders’ Lagniappe weekend on Friday, November 13 – Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Camp Whispering Pines that will highlight music, dance and the arts, in addition to science. Girl Scout troop leaders registered for the 2009-2010 Girl Scout membership year are invited to participate in this great learning opportunity. Research conducted in Louisiana and nationwide indicate the top interests of girls are music, dance and the arts. Workshops conducted by professionals in these areas will help leaders present topics to girls that are interesting and fun, and most importantly, will inspire girls to excel in these areas. Additional information will be mailed soon to troop leaders. Now is a great time to complete Troop Camping training!

Required for: All registered adults who will be assisting the girls as they plan and carry out a camping trip at one of the council’s properties. Prerequisites: GSUSA Online orientation Bring to Session A (classroom): Training card, Outdoor Education in Girl Scouting book, Safety-Wise, Leader Resource Guide Bring to Session B (at camp): mess kit with utensils, appropriate clothes for the weather, comfortable shoes, toiletries, and other items discussed in the Session A training. Program Power 2009 – 2010

Annual Family Giving Campaign Girl Scout families are the backbone of Girl Scouting. We can’t stress enough how much we appreciate your support in creating an organization that builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Every year we ask Girl Scout families to make a financial contribution to continue our exciting programming and to keep our facilities in good condition. As you know, this investment in girls costs a significant amount of money. What you might not know is that it costs $299 per girl annually to provide materials, programs, training, and support for your Girl Scout and her troop leader. On top of that, we have what seems a never-ending list of projects to keep our camps safe, fun places. There is always a leaky roof or a broken fence somewhere, a pool that doesn’t want to hold water, or a freezer on the fritz. This year we’re introducing – and we want you to join. For a donation of $49 or more, not only do you show your support for Girl Scouting, but you get a few nifty perks. Club 49 members receive: • The quarterly newsletter, • recognition in council publications, • 1 complimentary girl admission per family to either the Fall Fest in November 2009 or Swing into Spring in March 2010* • and breakfast with our CEO at a special donors’ event. At your first Parents’ meeting, your Troop Campaign Manager is going to talk to you about the Annual Family Giving Campaign. Send in your donation today and you can tell her with a great deal of satisfaction that you already made your very important donation to Girl Scouts. Thank you again for your support. We’re looking forward to a year of fun, friends and fabulous opportunities. For more information on the Annual Family Giving Campaign, have a look at our website at www.gsle.org or call/email Carrie Thomas at 504-355-5885, cthomas@gsle.org. * GSLE will provide details about this special members’ benefit when you pledge.
