The project is a response to the public transport system in Los Angeles. It aims to transform and connect the derelict area around Culver City Metro station with downtown Culver City. The art village explores the boundaries between public and private space; creating facilities appropriate for combining art therapy and public art exhibitions.

Exploring the relationship between private and public space, and the gradient in between, lead me to undertake an urban study of European and American grid patterns. The aim was to extract qualities from European pedestrian cities whilst keeping in touch with the character of Los Angeles. Researching and exploring George-Eugène Haussmann’s redevelopment of Paris, by experimenting with how wide/narrow paths and pockets of courtyards influence the atmosphere in an urban space.

The concept model illustrated how public and private paths and courtyards can create an interesting and interactive space allowing for a range of different exhibition spaces, workshops, and private accommodation. Combining art therapy and public art required a flexible and open space. I drew inspiration from the Maggie Centres; drop-in centres which aim to help anyone affected by cancer. These centres are unique for challenging the perception of traditional institutions

‘Paint the city’ was heavily influenced by an encounter in Tokyo. We were invited to a derelict building scheduled for demolition. It had been transformed into a temporary art centre. I pursued to use this inspiration to explore an uninhabitable space in North East London and investigate how the site could become a hub for spontaneous art in the neighbourhood.

The plastic tower is one among a family of temporary hide out pods created for staff of Powerday. The pods are intended to be used during lunch breaks when needed. The towers are made from recycled plastic bags. They get ironed together, cut into tiles, and sown. This creates a foldable and flexible temporary hide out.

67 Talbot Road was transformed from a dark and narrow Victorian terrace house into an open and spacious family home fit for a young growing family. The lower ground floor was extended and converted into a spacious kitchen/living/dining room with a direct connection to the garden. The entire property underwent a complete refurbishment including a built-in study and boot room fit for the family’s need. The project was completed in December 2018.

AA LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP

Growing up in Oslo, a city where nature meets urban life, prompted a fascination for the relationship between architecture and nature. I developed a keen interest in contemporary Scandinavian and Japanese design. The AA landscape workshop was a great experience to investigate this relationship. Moving into an abandoned school in Koshirakura, a remote village in the Japanese alps, allowed us to experiment freely with materials and techniques to develop the landscaping around the school’s perimeters. Working with the local community gave us a unique opportunity to participate and learn from the local traditions and culture.

As part of my undergraduate dissertation I seized the opportunity to arrange a research trip to ‘The Calais Jungle’ and ‘La Liniere’ refugee camp in the heat of the refugee crisis. I wanted to obtain a broader understanding of the crisis, beyond the scope of the mass media. The aim of the dissertation was to highlight the aspiration for normality and sense of place in a time of uncertainty and instability. My research found substantial differences between the two camps. The five clear aspects of community - shelter, trade, education, religion and culture were all present in ‘The Jungle’; a temporary spontaneous settlement. These qualities were not to be found in ‘La Liniere’. Shelter and education were the only aspects of community. The refugee camp in Dunkirk was a planned temporary settlement, a response by the French authorities to the high influx of refugees. Strict regulations were implemented to prevent urban sprawl and hold the temporary character of the settlement. Learning from the development and consequences of these camps are essential for a higher understanding and more appropriate approach to temporary settlements as well as the concept of social design.

MOVABLE PLANTER
Live projects are a unique opportunity to implement ideas outside the otherwise predominantly theoretical design studio. The idea being the Movable Planter was to explore the limits and potentials in old bike parts. The design was constructed by reconfiguring two different bikes with custom made planters, allowing the design to be moved freely.

Photography has the potential of capturing the atmosphere and emotions of a specific time and place. It is an art that allows you to tell stories that might even surprise the ones present. I obtained my first camera in my early teens. It turned out to become an introduction to the intricate would of digital and analogue photography. It has become an art form I treasure dearly.
