Cottage Coordinators Catch-up Greetings everyone!

Wendy and Debra excelled themselves I hope this finds you happy and healthy! with their Christmas in July lunch for seniors. What a busy month July turned out to Full baked glazed ham, roast vegetabe. Once again, we had over 200 people bles and wonderful deserts; it was through our doors, 13 car trips totalling enough to warm the cockles of their in excess of 48 hours and 2626km’s. souls. There are some photos of the Training days, meetings and school holidays made the month quite hectic. Seniors Christmas in July on the Seniors page (22). Two of our wonderful volunteers

Ellie, Clarry and Lane Talbot enjoy their school holiday trip to the Zoo.

Grants Success All Round The Community Cottage applied for and received a grant to assist us in offsetting the cost of producing the Gazette. A huge thank you must go to The Gardiner Dairy Foundation and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal for their support. Having the local newsletter cost covered for 12 months will allow us to further develop our Food Share, Seniors and Community Helper programs to a greater extent. We know how FRRR and The Gardiner Foundation

value and invest in small rural communities, so by applying and being awarded this grant we are thrilled to be able to assist our community to achieve their goals. As the presentation was held at The Melbourne Zoo, during the school holidays, their team organised it so we were able to take our families too. Our children enjoyed a day at the zoo (while we worked!!!) An excellent set-up that my children enjoyed thoroughly. Bye for now. Kezia

Development Group Receives Grants Girgarre was very successful at this round of Shire of Campaspe Community grants where the Shire supported four projects. The printing of a commemorative book to honour the Primary School Centenary Celebrations; a grant to assist the running of the 2019 Moosic Muster; the upgrade of the kitchen at the Recreation Reserve and support for the 2018 Open Gardens. A team of Development group stalwarts, John and Loraine Warde, Sue Solty, Jan Smith, Jenny Wadelton and Brendan

Development Group President Jan Smith was pleased with the ongoing support from the Shire. “The Girgarre community is grateful to the Shire for it’s continued interest in the vision and extensive plans we, as a community, have for the future development of Girgarre” She said following the presentation. “It is appreciated”.

ACM Building on Track There’s no doubt keeping an eye onCarol the new Ohlin ACM factory build makes for interesting watching (photo front cover). From a watchers point of view, weeks of earth moving taking place earlier in the year was slow going. In recent weeks the factory has grown apace. ACM Director John Hommes said he was more than pleased with the rate of progress and confident the first milk will be processed in November as planned. There’s also a great deal happening in the building internally at the moment, including tiling of all the floors. Work is to commence on the entrance to the factory on the 13th. Watch this space.

TOO MUCH SUN ? NO MORE CONCERNS NOW Colourful Shade for the Kinder Kids

a recent Community Shade Sail Grant. Their efforts are very much appreciated by all the children, educators and families. During July school holidays, Echuca Moama Shade Sails, were busy digging holes, installing the four large poles and hanging the brilliantly bright sail. They made an extra effort to manoeuvre machinery and wheelbarrows, carefully avoiding damaging a single plant in our newly transformed garden. It was very much appreciated.

In the past the kindergarten children have slapped on their broad brimmed hats, slopped on the sunscreen and headed outside into the summer sun for some outside fun. The cubby house sheltered, the swing nestled under a tree and the sandpit shaded. However, the whole playground just sizzled away in the scorching heat and the children waited for a cooler day so they could play on it. Thanks to everyone involved in yet another amazing These concerns are now a thing of the past! Thanks to improvement to our little town! KPMC (Kyabram Pre School Management Committee) and Girgarre Cottage for finding, applying and being successful in

MAKING MUSIC MAGIC The cold winter is no deterrent to the musically minded. Those that are not traveling north to avoid the wintry weather gather on the fourth Saturday every month in the warm Girgarre Hall to make some musical magic. It warms the heart and soul to be there and see the joy on the faces of those taking part. Jigarre Jammin’ goes from strength to strength. Each month there are many more new, and very enthusiastic musicians from places as far away, or as near as, Healesville, Wedderburn and Tatura. Then there’s the occasional Grey Nomad travelling around Australia armed with a variety of instruments who pop up on our doorstep. They’re all so very welcome. The music is magic, so is the friendly and joyous atmosphere.

The August Jam will be held on Saturday August 25. Everyone is welcome especially singers, do come along, it’s local and it’s nice. Oh, yes, before I forget. Pop this in your diary Jigarre Jammin’ Camp weekend is Friday 21 September to 23rd. The team are planning a special singing workshop and a concert for the Saturday night. There’s always the opportunity to sing along to some favourite Old Timey gospel on Sunday morning over in the Community Church. Check out some of the star players, and their interesting instruments ,who turned up at July’s Jigarre Jammin’. Photos: Sandra Brown.

From the Desk of the Rushworth & District Community Bank Congratulations to Girgarre, what an incredible and unforgettable grand finale to the Girgarre Revival, the Great Girgarre Constellation. Small town big spirit was certainly demonstrated with all the achievements through the Small Towns Transformation Initiative; a lasting legacy for Girgarre and district. The staff and directors have been pleased to be able to represent our Community Bank at the many functions and outstanding events during this exciting time, the Moosic Muster, the Sound Shell Opening, the unveiling of the Quilt, and the Light Show. We are looking forward to supporting Gargarro at the Fine Dining evening coming up soon. We are, as always, very pleased to be partnering with Girgarre to achieve all we can for the Girgarre community. We continue to support and congratulate the hard work and dedication of all who work to continue these amazing projects, as we do to the many other district groups who receive funds from our Community Enterprise foundation; the arm of the Bank where funds are set aside for grants.

On the back page of this magazine there is an invitation to an

information evening on applying for grants. It will be held in the Rushworth P-12 College, Heily St. Rushworth at 7pm on Wednesday 15 August. Topics covered are •

How to apply and what criteria the Foundation looks for in an application.

Timelines for grants and eligibility.

Contact Michelle Baker Mob: 0407 763 789. E: michellebaker1234@bigpond.com I suggest the big 4 banks do little for your community compared to the Rushworth and District Community Bank. Our committed staff at both the Rushworth Branch and the Stanhope Service Centre are eager to help you. You will receive exceptional face to face service from them. Support your Community Bank and we can continue to support Girgarre. Until next time. Christine Borger (Chair)

A smaller than usual crowd attended Jigarre Jammin last weekend with many of the usuals attendees escaping to warmer places. Fairley Leadership Program– Small Town - Big Ideas Fairley Leadership began in 1997 as a result of local businessman Ross McPherson, (Managing Director of the McPherson Media Group) participating in the Williamson Community Leadership Program based in Melbourne. On his return he gathered together a group of local business and community people interested in addressing the need for leadership across the region. The Fairley Leadership program is now in its 22 year with over 550 graduates. The program provides an opportunity for participants to explore the challenges and opportunities for the Goulburn Murray region and develop their leadership skills. There are 12 seminar days across the year that showcase an aspect of the community such as water; how we care for the vulnerable; understanding education and our youth and cultural diversity. Three days are allocated for leadership skill development and a two day study tour to Melbourne to understand community leadership in a state context and then four days study tour to Canberra to understand the national perspective. The program nurtures people with the skills and aspirations to lead, and equips them for leadership in both their own organisations and in the wider community. On Wednesday 1 August, the Girgarre Development Group hosted a Fairley Leadership program.

A range of speakers from across the region presented an exciting session on understanding community leadership from the community perspective. It led to discussions on how to understand and develop events, and how to initiate actions to enable them to experience the power of a small community committed to a vision. The day was proudly sponsored by the Rushworth and District Community Bank.

GREEN THUMBS NURSERY

Loraine’s Garden Notes

Supporting your community car The winter tidy up at the nursery continues and it is very rewarding to see an area looking so good afterwards. Winter is truly upon us with the heavy frosts we have had this past couple of weeks always evident in the state of the affected plants. Although it is very tempting to prune the affected foliage, resist the temptation until the risk of frosts has passed. Cutting back encourages fresh growth that will result in further damage to the plant. A new shelf was installed at the nursery this week, thanks to John Warde and was quickly filled with plants. This seems to be the norm, as soon as we manage to create a bit of space it is quickly filled.

For Sale - This month we have been fortunate to have a number of native orchid plants in flower donated along with a variety of Dahlia tubers and Soft Cane Dendrobiums. Also available are a selection of native plants, Gardenias, Strelitzia Regina, succulents ferns and Paintbrush Lilies. Nursery hours are Monday and Wednesdays, or by arrangement with either - Loraine: Ph: 0438 546 237 or Carol: Ph: 5854 6371

WEATHER

Disaster Relief & Recovery - Red Cross Appeal Drought is on everyone's mind at the moment. If you would like to help the farmers in the drought affected regions of Australia, the Red Cross has begun an appeal. https://www.redcross.org.au/drought

Climate Outlook Overview - Bureau of Meteorology The August to October outlook, issued 26 July 2018, shows most of mainland Australia is likely to be drier than average. Days and nights are likely to be warmer than average during August to October for most of Australia, with August days very likely to be warmer than average. These forecast warmer and drier conditions suggest that much of eastern and southern mainland Australia are less likely to see widespread respite in the coming season from current dry conditions. The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are currently neutral. However, the Bureau's ENSO Outlook is at El Niño WATCH.

COMMUNITY Seniors Looking back 3rd July. Last week was our in house movie day, we watched “Young Victoria”, and thankfully, it had subtitles so everyone was able to understand what was going on. A great movie, which everyone enjoyed. The heater was cranked, creating a sauna like atmosphere that was not appreciated by our Volunteer Seniors Coordinator! House made chicken pie and mashed potato, followed by apple cake and frozen yoghurt, yummy! This week, we are in house again, with our Tech for seniors recommencing. We will spend our first session back, revising previous topics covered. 10th July. As is usual at this time of year, we have a few more in-house days to offset the wintery weather. So once again, we were in-house last week. Debra made a rich and warming osso bucco served with pasta and warm bread rolls. A chocolate and peach cheesecake, thanks Joy, followed this! Unfortunately, our Tech for seniors program was cancelled at

the last minute, so we undertook mindful colouring and solved the problems of the world! Hetty nearly had a conniption, thinking she had missed her shopping date with her daughterin-law. All was fine, just a broken clock. This week are off to Shepparton for another adventure! July 18th. We took our largest group to Shepparton RSL “Merry Melodies” last week, filling the bus. Anthony Tenace performed encouraging audience participation, one young man in particular had a wonderful time dancing and playing the air guitar. His enthusiasm was contagious. Our Tech for Seniors Guru has extended his winter getaway and our program won’t recommence now until September. This week we are celebrating Christmas in July- Debra’s favourite, as she believes we are confused enough as it is, hehehe! Full glazed ham, roast vegies and dessert. Scrumptious on a cold wintery day.

Christmas in July—popular with Girgarre’s Seniors.

Girgarre’s most popular Chefs certainly with the Seniors, Wendy and Debra, right, cook up a cosy winter warmer for the Seniors Christmas in July
