COORDINATOR’S CATCH UP Greetings Everyone. Wow, here we are in 2019. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! The Cottage was involved in organising the Christmas Carols at the Soundshell for the first time last year, a fabulous night. Our break-up party was also great fun with wonderful food and company. Thank you to all who attended and an extra huge thank you to Wendy for all of the food purchasing, prepping and cooking. What a marvellous job you did once again. There was a great turn out for Girgarre’s first ever Christmas in the Soundshell. Sixty locals and friends attended on a lovely evening. The kids had a fabulous time running freely, singing and dancing while waiting for the gifts from Santa and the sweets handed out to all. A huge shout out has to go to Peggy George for organising and leading the singing at the annual Girgarre Carols for over 30 years. This year Peggy was accompanied by Jill Bowles, Maureen Shepherd and Peter Berner followed by a set from the Pure Drop Band. (Photos page 20) It doesn’t happen without the support of many people, all volunteers. The stalwarts from the Community
Cottage, Ken Stewart who manages much of the sound work around Girgarre events, Avis and Clarrie Weller for the Lions Van, Doc McDonald for packing up and of course, in Australia Santa often leaves his reindeer somewhere cool and comes to visit the kids in the local CFA fire truck, always an added treat. It all makes for an enjoyable and relaxed evening. Many thanks to all of you. This year I am focusing on starting a Book Club. This is easy to facilitate as the library have extensive resources with hundreds of book packages to choose. I just need people! I am asking for expressions of interest at this stage, I think we would need at least six people to begin with, but the more the merrier. If you could contact me here at the Cottage on 5854 6482 or via email girgarrenh@bigpond.com that would be fabulous. Could you also please indicate what day would be best for you and time, morning, afternoon or evening? The plan would be to meet once per month. This could be a great opportunity to get together with different folk, no cost and forcing us to take the time to sit down and read. Win Win. So please if you or someone you know may be interested in helping me form a Book Club, please get in touch. Take care and bye for now. Kezia

GIRGARRE MAKES A CENTURY Mrs Margaret Crothers, accompanied by her daughter Amanda Derham were guests of honour at the luncheon in the Girgarre Memorial Hall to celebrate the centenary of Girgarre as a town. Chicken and champagne was served by Bernie Ryan and his team of volunteers while Suzette Herft and Chris Lazzaro from Melbourne entertained the guests. Mr Athol ’Doc’ McDonald, gave a brief outline of the history of the settlement before handing over to Mrs Crothers, the wife of the late Mr Bill Crothers, of the family who purchased the fledgling Girgarre Cheese Factory from the McDonald family in 1938. The factory manufactured speciality cheeses there until it closed in 1960. The following is part of the presentation by Mrs Crothers who also donated three framed photos of the different upgrades to the Factory over the years to the community (see below). The Crothers family have lived and worked in the Goulburn Valley region since May 1876 when Thomas Crothers and his family moved from Castlemaine to Carag Carag. Thomas, a dairy farmer, started a creamery at Corop in 1890 that became part of the Rushworth Dairy Cooperative, later the Rushworth Butter Factory. His third son, Dan, assumed his duties when he died. In 1923 the Butter Factory was moved to Stanhope. In 1938, the purchase of the Girgarre Cheese Factory from the McDonalds by Thomas “T.W.” Crothers, Dan’s sec-
ond son, (b.1896, m. Olive Baulch, b.1899) laid the foundation for three generations of investment in dairy processing in Victoria. Girgarre Cheese Factory, 1938-1968, Midland Milk, Shepparton 1946-1989 and Burra Foods, Korumburra 1991 to the present. From 1949, William B. Crothers (1926-1988, m. Margaret Eastman, b.1930) built capability to make European style butter and innovative cheeses. Girgarre’s multicultural workforce included post-war migrants from throughout Europe via the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre. An integral part of the town’s expansion was the prefabricated houses relocated after Eildon Weir Dam construction to address the post-war housing shortage. In 1968, the Girgarre Cheese Factory was sold to Nestle Australia Ltd. In 1982, William C. Crothers (b.1956, m. Joanne Cain, b.1956) managed Midland Milk in Shepparton that distributed drinking milk throughout the Goulburn and Murray Valley region, until it was sold to Bonlac Foods in 1989. In 2008 Nicholas C. Crothers (b.1983, m. Alison Cole, b.1984) worked in the GCF recycling food and food packaging. Grant T Crothers (b.1958, m. Amanda Walton, b.1963) CEO of Burra Foods Pty Ltd, Korumburra continues the family’s investment in dairy processing. Compiled by Amanda Derham (nee Crothers, b.1954) Left and Below: Mrs Amanda Derham (in blue) and Mrs Margaret Crothers. BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER Whoa, what a great joint effort it was. We delivered 57 free workshops and 6 free concerts from Friday 11th January to Sunday 13th night for people to enjoy, including our first muster concert at our new Soundshell. The success of our festival stems 100 per cent from the volunteers, whether they are performing in concerts, setting up facilities, leading workshops, cooking meals, making sandwiches, tugging bins, cleaning toilets, hanging up signs or assisting with the sound requirements or shifting chairs. A huge thank you to the CFA, the RSL, the Community Church and to the Recreation Reserve. A special mention goes to Susan & David Fulton for the use of their premises and the men who did a massive job with managing the
facilities. Bernie Ryan’s gang for the great meals and the women who managed the lunches. The friendly, welcoming receptionists, the caravan volunteers, (some of whom had not been to a festival before) and the great teams who assisted with the workshops and our concert performers. Finally, it’s our sponsors who make this all possible. Our small community can be very proud of its Moosic Muster. We had people travelling from Western Australia , Queensland and one workshop leader flying in from New Zealand at his own expense. We are punching well above our weight Again thank you all who have made this happen. Jan Smith, Girgarre Moosic Muster Director.

A WORLD OF WONDERFUL MUSIC The world of music opened so many hearts over the recent Moosic Muster. Workshops and related follow up opportunities saw well over 1600 people taking the time to better their talents and share their learning. But above all, the Camping, Walkups, Workshops and Concerts oozed a unity and fellowship beyond all expectation this year. The 57 workshops and many walkups, were full every time... led by skilled and rehearsed tutors and MC's. Regardless of the heat and distance, the Ukulele experiment at the Rec Reserve just topped off a marvelous weekend. I don't need to list all the action, but I wish to thank EVERYBODY! From the most experienced musicians and tutors, the humble learners and
performers, the men at work over the entire weekend, ladies and gents in the kitchen, the respectful campers, (and the Toilet Fairy who maintained Camp loos!!), those who led and shared jamming in the camp zone (and anywhere around muster) and ANYONE who asked if they could help (and there was an abundance of them). Without this magic team results like this would be impossible. I couldn't help but notice that our welcoming committee now includes all the happy campers!!! Check the Facebook page GIRGARRE MOOSIC MUSTER (January 2019) for pics and comments from lots of contented visitors. See you all next year!!!! Di Burgmann (Workshop Co-ordinator)
A few of the musicians and the variety of instruments you’re likely to see at a Muster. Everything from wash boards, (Dingee’s Kevin O’Hara), accordions, (Lawrence and Vanessa) Bodhrans and inimitable Barry Price (Wagga Wagga) on his giant acoustic bass. He’s a very welcome fixture at a Moosic Muster, along with many others from near and far.

Mustering the Kids There’s something for everyone at a Girgarre Moosic Muster. Kids are not left out of the fun. There’s a full day of activities under the watchful eye of teacher Kerri Watson and her band of willing volunteers. Between 20 – 30 children came and joined in musical fun and games provided by ‘The Limberjacks’ who come from far away in south Gippsland. ‘Potato’ Pete Bruton and his partner, Miss Elaine; their daughter ‘Miss Mandy’ Bruton, her partner Brendan Banfield,( Hi Hat Bear ) are a very welcome addition to the
Kids Muster each year. They had the kids dancing with or without with the Marionettes. Alex Rushanov came along to help the kids make clay models and Ali Rendell had them strumming along on a ukulele. There was Lego to build with or faces to be painted by Stanhope’s ‘Fun Faces’, Kym Patten. It’s an altogether jam packed day for the kids. Not forgetting Wobble Yoga with Claire Morgan to encourage relaxation after all the activity. Thanks to the volunteers who provide the lunches for all at the Kids Muster too.
The Dancing Marionettes Everybody in for the Heel and Toe Polka
Wobble Yoga with Claire
Kids always have a huge amount of fun at the Muster. There’s dancing the Heel and Toe Polka or the Hokey Pokey or singing with Hi Hat Bear and Miss Mandy at the Saturday night concert, top and centre left. If it gets too lively and tiring then the calming influence of Claire Morgan’s Wobble Yoga for Kids is timely, above. Face painting with Kym Patten’s Fun Faces, far left was popular and clay modeling or poem writing with Alex Rushanov kept the children busy and happy. All to the music of Potato Pete and his lively crew of Limberjacks from far off Gippsland.

In Girgarre The heat of the previous week had thankfully dissipated by early morning on Australia day. The cool and clear morning was greatly appreciated by the crowd of around 75 locals and visitors out in the park for the flag raising and national anthem. Those formalities over everyone retreated to The Hall to hear MC Brendan Nicholson (President of the Girgarre Football/Netball Club) introduce both Girgarre’s Ambassador for 2019, Dr. Yvonne Ho (OAM), and the winners of the Girgarre Community Award for 2019. Hearty congratulations go to the Girgarre Patchwork and Quilters Group for their fantastic work on the ‘Past, Present and Future’ panels. The local Girgarre Community Award plus the ‘Arts Group of the Year Award’ from the Rushworth and District Australia Day Committee are a well deserved accolade and acknowledgement of all the good work this creative and dedicated group have achieved in recent times. They have helped enormously to put Girgarre into the mindset of the wider public.
ble achievements. Dr Ho and her family, husband CK Mak and their daughter Adison are no strangers to Girgarre. The family have attended the Moosic Muster a number of times now. The criteria that brought them to the Muster in the first instant was the focus on interaction through workshops, not concerts as many festivals are, especially for beginners, as Adison is a budding musician. However, the real strength of Girgarre was not the events and programs that are happening here, Dr Ho said in her address, but it is the inclusiveness of the people in the community and the volunteers who willingly give their time. Another of Dr Ho’s passions from early life is music. While still a school girl she received her Diploma in Music Performance (piano) and her focus is now on the Charteris Music School she established as an adult, bringing music of high quality and fun to the community. Music, she is quoted as saying, is her symbolic gift to the future.
Our Australia Day Ambassador, Dr. Ho (a proud Australian, Malaysian born of Chinese heritage) leads a fascinating and multi-faceted life. She is the first female in Victoria and the first woman of Asian heritage to be dually qualified as a radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist. Dr Ho is also the first female radiologist to be Director of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) and she also has the honour of being an inductee into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women amongst many other nota-
Dr Ho also spoke eloquently about the benefits of volunteering. Girgarre wouldn't be what it is today without it’s volunteers she said, and Australia would come to a stand still without them. “The hour given is lost forever”. The Jigarre Jammers, accompanied by Dr Ho on her Ukulele, played some rousing Australian songs. Words were on the screen so everyone could sing along. It rounded off a pleasant morning celebrating our national day.

GREEN THUMBS NURSERY

Carol’s Garden Notes
Supporting your community car Welcome to 2019. We are just easing back into the routine of Nursery operation. We suffered minimal losses from heat & watering system failure but most plants survived. I owe you all a sincere apology, especially those trying to produce Weird & Wonderful Veggies. When optimistically penning summer garden tips in November for the December gazette I neglected to include ideas for providing plants shelter from the unrelenting heat we have experienced since Christmas. I also should have mentioned the added risks associated with mid season plantings, heatwaves or temperature above mid thirties. I am frustrated. You must be disillusioned & perhaps annoyed, rightly so. Check out our plant specials on the Green Thumbs Nursery Facebook page. Open Hours: Monday and Wednesday 10 am - noon until further notice. Please note: Nursery will not open on forecast 400 days.
Weird & Wonderful Veggie Competition is now only 10 weeks away. My advice if you have pumpkins & veggies growing is to nurture them and await results. If you are still interested in planting try baby beet (regular beetroot may also be planted and harvested early). Radishes are usually reliable only requiring 4-5 weeks and don’t seem to mind the heat. Please keep in mind the non competitive display section open to all comers. Information you may have missed can be found on the Green Thumbs face book page. All other information regarding entries will be listed next month. Happy Gardening—Carol O WEIRD AND WONDERFUL VEGGIES
MARKET DAY 14 APRIL 2019 Volunteer of the Month, John Warde John is always working somewhere around the town of Girgarre, you never know just which hat he’s wearing at any one time, but be assured whichever one it is, it’s for the benefit of the Girgarre Community. He’s a familiar face anywhere from the park grounds, the Kinder (where he put in many hours over the Christmas break), to the Cottage, the Moosic Muster and much, much more. John, you truly are amazing. Thank you for everything that you do.
Eligibility Guidelines Details of this event are almost finalised with more information to follow. This event is unsponsored and the competitive sections have been limited to locals, listed as follows:- Veggies on display - Open to all comers, including professional growers. Sections 1 - 5 - Growers
must reside within close proximity of Girgarre & Stanhope. Section 6 – Same as sections 1 – 5 including Girgarre and Stanhope Schools & Pre-schools. All sections are listed on the Girgarre Community Cottage Facebook page.
Junkestra Rising: Wallace Williams and Maureen Shepherd took the Junkestra to a new level this year. Thanks to them both for the commitment, arrangement and direction of this "Made in Girgarre" piece, written many years ago by J S Bach and arranged by Graeme Leak. Maureen Shepherd and Wallace Williams Happy New Year to all from Staff and Directors of Rushworth & District Community Bank. This isn’t any ordinary bank branch. It employs six locals and is run by a volunteer board of company directors, in partnership with Australia’s fifth largest retail bank, Bendigo Bank. In fifteen years, our Rushworth and District Community Bank branch has returned in excess of $800,000.00 to local community groups, projects and dividends to our Shareholders. Girgarre community has been a recipient many times, Gargarro received $40,000, Girgarre Moosic Muster $5,000 annually, as well as many smaller sponsorships and scholarships our Community Bank branch has impacted on many hundreds of local people.
This remarkable way of contributing to the sustainability of our small communities is due to our customers who have their banking, insurance, and all things financial domiciled to Rushworth & District Community Bank. As Chairman of this community company and on behalf of our 325 shareholders and so many grant recipients, I say thank you to those of you in our community who now bank with us. It’s because of your banking that our company is in a position to return our share of our business’ revenue to local groups. You really are leading the way when it comes to change in our community. Congratulations to all on another very successful Moosic Muster. Christine Borger. Chair Rushworth & District Financial Services Ltd

We welcome anyone who would like to learn to play a ukulele or can already play one. Cost $2. Feeling inspired by the Moosic Muster, we’ve been meeting every week for the first three weeks of January and

BOOK CLUB -

GREAT IDEA
- INTERESTED?
The Cottage Coordinator, Kezia, has had her thinking cap on over the holidays and come up with the excellent idea of starting a Book Club for Girgarre and District Residents. Book Clubs are a great way of sharing the joy of reading while you socialise. The Book Club I belong to gives each member a turn at choosing a book from a list of sets provided by the Library. Whatever takes your fancy, because a book club set list gives you the opportunity to read books that you may not otherwise choose for yourself. Each member has their own taste in reading too, and it’s good to remember that everyone has an opinion but no-one’s opinion is wrong, it may be just a little different to yours. The atmosphere of a Book Club is great, it’s stimulating and a lot of fun. At ours, we have some very lively discussions and lots of laughter! To get it started Kezia will need around 6 members with room to grow. The Campaspe Library is free to join and has sets covering many genres. Give it a go, fill out the form opposite and leave at the Cottage or contact Kezia if you’re interested. IreneL

DRIVERS WANTED The Community car is a great service to the local community, well needed and used. At the moment there’s a need for more drivers to go on the roster. No need to be nervous about enquiring, or your qualifications, all you need is a current Drivers License and the Cottage staff will give you a full induction. You are able to choose whether to just drive locally, or to Melbourne and other larger centres if needed. Is this something you think you would like to do for your community? Then please contact Kezia at the Cottage. (5854 6482). Your enquiry would be most welcome.

Development Group General Meeting - Tuesday 29 January
The vision: To build a sustainable vibrant community and create opportunities to celebrate the achievements of the town GARGARRO BOTANIC GARDEN. Gargarro Botanic Garden Ltd is a not for profit company which is charged with overseeing the development and ongoing care of Gargarro. There are currently four directors, Doc McDonald, Jan Smith, Michael Watt and Racheal Alamaris (see page 9). While the GDG does have some influence over the company (such as the appointment of Directors), it is a separate entity and operates in its own right. Legal advice has been sought as to which entity should own the land on which Gargarro sits. The unreserved answer received was that it would be much clearer cut if Gargarro Botanic Garden Ltd owned the land, rather than the Girgarre Development Group. Gargarro Botanic Garden Ltd has Deductible Gift Recipient status, so anyone making a financial contribution to the company is able to claim it as a tax deduction. A charity with DGR status must spend any funds contributed to its Trust Fund on assets that it owns. This would cause obvious problems if the GDG still owned the land and GBG Ltd was spending donations on developing the garden. The Girgarre Development Group voted to support the motion to transfer the land. ACM Report. After final sign off by relevant authorities milk is expected to be run this Thursday. First product to be processed at the new plant will be milk powder. ACM are still waiting for butter plant to arrive then infused butter will be manufactured with the production of organic milk to follow

LORD OF THE STRINGS, Celebrate the music of Spain - Matthew Fagan Returns The exotic and colourful music of Spain will resound in Girgarre on Saturday 16 February when internationally renowned master of the 10 string guitar, Matthew Fagan, accompanied by singer Kellie Grace will return to the Girgarre Hall. Recently returned from a European tour of Edinburgh, Seville and Verona to great acclaim, Matthew presents a stunning concert of Spanish Flamenco and classical guitar, combining musical passion and virtuosity to celebrate the Spirit of Spain, El Vito. He brings together the traditional flamenco elements of Spanish guitar with the concert masterpieces of composers Isaac Albeniz, Manuel De Falla, Joaquin Rodrigo and George Bizet in stunning new arrangements. A special highlight in the concert is six stunning arrangements of dances and ballads from George Bizet’s Car-
men from the original orchestral score. The concert will also be the launch of the first new Spanish guitar vinyl release in Australia in 30 years, a 12 inch LP “El Vito” at the concert. Kellie will share vibrant and joyous Brazilian Bossa Nova Jazz songs including “The Girl from Ipanema”, “Mas que nada” and more. Matthew’s superb technical ability and emotionally fiery execution on 10 string and other guitars combined with Kellie’s warm vocals that capture the spirit and emotion of the music, creates an intimate connection with the audience for an unforgettable show not to be missed. "Matthew is the Best Artist that I have toured with". Billy Connolly

EXCITING NEWS - A FIRST FOR GIRGARRE’S SOUNDSHELL The Festival of Small Halls has become a fixture on the Australian touring music scene. Each year it showcases one international and one local act. This year it rolls into Girgarre on Friday, 5 April 2019 with award-winning Canadian trio The Once and Australia’s John Flanagan. Newfoundland has a storied history of stunning songwriters, poets, and players. Over the course of the last decade, Canadian indie folk trio ‘ The Once’ have writ and knit themselves into that story. Perfect vocal harmonies thick enough to stand on and dazzling three part harmonies and acapella arrangements their music stoke a nostalgic longing for idyllic rural memories regardless of one’s own past.
The concert will be a gorgeous collection of harmony-driven acoustic folk sure to please. John Flanagan has an engaging, honest lyricism and timelessness to his melodies. His engaging, honest lyricism and timeless melodies have seen him pick up song-writing awards all over and win over fans at many major music festivals around the country. He is a song writing force to keep an ear tuned to. A winner of the prestigious Gympie Music Muster Talent Search in 2013, listeners will be charmed by warm vocals and impressive acoustic arrangements. Tickets online at https://smallhalls.iwannaticket.com.au (‘Autumn Tour Port Fairy to the Nationals’).

It’s not so small, and not really a hall, but the Gargarro Soundshell – this beautiful structure – is home to a community and built by their sweat, tears, and sheer strength of will. We’re honoured to dance a different tune in a different style with – a small town with a big spirit…” Jan Smith

‘LIFTING THE VEIL’ Girgarre’s Quilters are an industrious lot, there’s always a project or two on the go. As you know, the beautiful ‘Past, Present and Future’ Quilt Panels, now featured on the stage in the hall were crafted by our local Quilting group. On December 7th, the Quilters suspended their current ‘pinny’ making project to hold a special morning tea with invited guests, including Greg Ryan, (Manager of the Kyabram Club Inc.), Rob Axen, Dennis Hammond, Sandra McDonald and Jan Smith, (Chair of the Girgarre Development Group) to commemorate the unveiling of a stylish black, theatre style curtain designed to be drawn across and cover the panels. The curtain was funded by a $900 grant from the Kyabram Club and matched by the Girgarre Development Group. It frames the quilted panels nicely and will protect the panels from light as well as providing a backdrop to performers on the stage.
At the unveiling, the Kyabram Club Manager, Greg Ryan said the Kyabram Club was more than happy to support small and dynamic communities that work together so well. Chair of the Development group, Jan Smith spoke highly of the Girgarre Patchwork and Quilters Group. “The Quilters are one of the highlights of this growing community” she said. They’ve gone from a small in-house group to an integrated part of the community in Girgarre. The more people visit to see the Quilts, the greater good for the community as a whole.” The ‘Pinnies’ (a shortened name for pinafores by the way), are being made because the Quilters will host a ‘Quilt In’ in April and as each Pinny will have a name stitched into it, identifying the hosts to the guests will be easy.

ACTION PACKED YEAR FOR GIRGARRE’S KINDER KIDS 2018 was an amazing year for Girgarre Community Kindergarten, which was completed with an action packed last few weeks. v
v v v v v
v
Meshelle Catalano brought her menagerie down to the kinder for another interactive and enjoyable play. Max and Ashala introduced their new foal ‘Subzero’ to everyone. Some of the store room shelving was removed and replaced with better functioning hooks. The tree mural in the playroom had a vibrant make over thanks to Kym Patten’s artistic brilliance. Kybram P-12 choir and band came out to perform for us. Families and friends came along to enjoy the three and four year old kindergarten group’s end of year concert and party (which included Santa arriving on the Girgarre CFA fire truck and Policeman Frank, from Stanhope, handing out festive treats). The end of year excursion was a bus trip to Bug Mugz in Echuca where the children had a wonderful time, especially in the ‘messy play zone’.
v
Presentation of gratitude was made to Loraine and John Warde (Green Thumbs Nursery) for their continued assistance with our outdoor areas. v Families past and present recently gathered for a working bee to spruce up the garden in readiness for the Kids’ Moosic Muster. Congratulations to all those that graduated and heading off to school next year; Almay, Bentley, Charlie, Chevy, Emma, Evie, Kaylib, Landon, Lynkin, Max & Thomas (six of which are going to Girgarre PS which is fabulous for our community). 2019 is shaping up to be yet another great year for our kinder with 11 four year olds and 3 three year olds already enrolled before term has even started. The dynamic team of educators (Robyn, Kylie and Kerrie) are all returning and ready to care for and provide an amazing platform for these kids to leap into their next level of education. If you are interested in more information about Girgarre Community Kindergarten please see www.girgarre.com.au website, call Robyn on 5854 6368 or drop in and visit her in person. Kindergarten sessions are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9am to 2pm.

HAPPY HAY BALE CREATIONS The Grinch never looks too happy no matter where he is, but he certainly made a lot of people smile over the Christmas festive season as he sat on the side of Curr Road watching passing motorists. He was one of the entries into Girgarre’s Hay Bale Competition, along with Mrs Claus, Elf on the Road, ‘Haydeers’, Christmas Tree and other creative entries. (Pictured below). There were three main awards; ‘Highly Recommended’ went to Bill and Evelyn Nicholson on Curr Road, ‘Best Endeavour’ went to the Attwell Family on Winter Road and the winners of ‘Best Bales’ went to Carmen & Pat Nicholson on Curr Road with their Hay Sleigh complete with reindeer, Santa, kids and tinsel. Congratulations! With a bit of luck we hope next years’ feed prices decline, so that in addition to assisting our farmers financially, it may result in even more entries submitted to the competition. The ‘Rusty Holden Ute’ on it’s Monster Hay Bale wheels, seen on Scobie Road was a novel idea but did not enter in the competition. Get your thinking caps on!
