Co-ordinators Cottage Catch Up Greetings everyone! Winter is nearly over…yippee! My middle child is especially excited as getting the wood is his job and not one he particularly enjoys. Another busy month here with approximately 180 people through our door, compared to 114 this time last year. We made 11 car trips totally 1904 km’s and 45 hours, a huge effort on behalf of our volunteers. Well done! In the previous four weeks, we provided 12 food relief packages totally 21 boxes of pantry and frozen goods and 9 bags of fresh produce. If you or someone you know is struggling and is in need of food assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. You may have an electricity bill that you need to pay or schools shoes to buy that may leave your grocery money short. If you need help please, please contact us, drop in or give us a buzz. We are here to help, do not judge and are confidential. Community matters! Campaign Success! As you may be aware, Minister Mikakos has announced a $21.8 million funding boost in this year’s State Budget for Neighbourhood Houses (NH’s). NH’s have been delivering extraordinary outcomes for Victorians since the 1970s, so this injection of funding will provide an important and much needed boost for our sector. The announcement also serves to recognise the vital role the NH’s play within local communities both now and into the future. Not only do we serve as a gateway for people needing to access essential services, but also provide an inclusive and welcoming space. A place where people can come together and connect. Whilst the funding does fall short of the $72 million that was initially requested it will provide funding for a number of new houses, whilst increasing the capacity of existing houses
(US!) to operate for at least 25 hours per week. It has long been recognised that the amount of work which falls on Coordinators and Admin Staff well exceeds the 20 hours funding we currently receive, so five extra hours will allow us to achieve so many more things, or do what we currently do that much better. Exciting times! Thank you to all who supported us and filled out a postcard, approximately 30,000 postcards were returned to the Minister’s Office. Also thank you to my team of staff and volunteers who supported me and allowed me to work together with other Houses in our cluster to enable us as a sector to visit over 40MPs and many more local Councillors. I would also like to thank the incredible work of NH Vic's Campaign Manager, Tania Phillips, as well as the members of the Campaign Reference Group. We could not have done it without you! As you all know it takes a village…. Finally, our AGM is on Monday the 17th of September at 7pm. To be held here at The Cottage in our utility room (at the back of the Cottage) it will be well lit, warm and inviting. Tea, coffee and a light supper will be provided. We are always looking for new committee members and if you are interested, please drop by The Cottage to collect a nomination form. Management Committee members play a vital role in serving their communities and bring passion, commitment, skills and experience to the House that they lead. If you are new to committees, there is no need to worry. You will be provided with all of the information you need; role descriptions, induction packages, as well as ongoing support and advice from The Cottage team. Looking forward to seeing you, the heaters are on! Take care and bye for now-Kezia

“BELLISSIMO ITALIANO” - AN EVENING OF FINE DINING, GIRGARRE STYLE Fantastic wine, courtesy of ‘Vinea Marson’, Mt Camel; a full house and some very fine food all made for another excellent social night in Girgarre on Friday 24 August. Held to raise funds for the Gargarro Gardens Project, tickets sold out earlier in the month as local residents, their friends and many visitors, some from as far away as the Mornington Peninsular, snapped up seats for what is becoming a regular and very popular feature on the Girgarre social calendar. Also in attendance were the Deputy Leader of the National Party, Stephanie Ryan; the Mayor of Campaspe Mayor Adrian Weston; Councillor John Zobec, Christine Borger, Chair of the Rushworth District Community Bank, Community Bank Director, Rhonda Risstrom, .
Chef Bernie Ryan and the kitchen and table waiting staff of eleven volunteers did an excellent job of presenting a varied and different four course Italian style dinner with great style and panache. Each course was matched with an appropriate wine, brought along by Vintner Mario Marson. The shiraz served with the Italian Ragout main course a favourite for many of the guests. Mario gave a little of his families history as he explained the style of wine presented for each course. The family winery draws on over 40 years experience in wine beginning with Mario’s Italian Grandfather in Fruili, Italy and by working for many years in the Yarra Valley of Victoria. The Friends of Gargarro intend to offer more of these culinary delights in 2019. We’ll keep you informed.

MAKING YOUR COMMUNITY EVEN BETTER Gargarro Green Thumbs Propagation Centre and Coffee Corner
Your Community Needs Your Vote The Girgarre Green Thumbs Nursery and Friends of the Gargarro Botanic Gardens have an ambitious plan to develop a Propagation Centre and Coffee Hub on the Gargarro Gardens site using re purposed shipping containers. It’s part of the ongoing development of the gardens area, and the planned re-location of the Green Thumbs Nursery which has long outgrown its Cottage home. The Girgarre submission has been accepted by the Victorian Government’s PICK MY PROJECT grants program; the details are all online https://pickmyproject.vic.gov.au/ Tipping the scales our way so we can receive a share of the million dollar funding for the Loddon Campaspe Region will depend on the number of votes the project receives. Voting is crucial. If you’ve a mind to help this project get a share of the funds, then we encourage as many of you as possible to go online and vote – the competition from other worthy projects will be stiff.
WHAT EXACTLY IS - PICK MY PROJECT? Pick My Project is a Victorian-first community grants initiative from the Victorian Government. There’s a million in funding available in each metro and regional area for projects that build up a local community. HOW CAN YOU HELP? Now is the time to vote! Voting is open until 5pm Monday September 17th. Pick three favourite project ideas in your local community/region, in random order, and help make them a reality. All Victorian residents will need to create an account in order to submit their votes for Pick My Project. The following information will be collected for verification purposes to ensure that it is Victorians only submitting three project votes: 1. An active email address, 2. A mobile phone number, 3. Street address and postcode, (this information will be used to verify that voters are located in Victoria).
Please Note: Voting in Pick My Project can only be done online. Check out the web site if you need support.

GREEN THUMBS NURSERY
Carol’s Garden Notes
Supporting your community car After a month away we are most impressed by the wonderful transformation taking place as result of ongoing commitment by all our highly valued volunteers organising plants and the Nursery generally. Whilst still a work in progress, it’s worth visiting us soon before we “mess it up”. Currently available, variegated liriope a grass that thrives in sun or shade, potted bulbs including blue bells, drumsticks (alliums), zephyranthus, orange spraxias, a wide variety of natives and succulents.
Our off-season special on named day lilies $4 ea. will continue until the end of September. We are also clearing out leggy osteospermums (African daisies) $1.50 each. Enquire about large succulents many at rock bottom prices, you may well be surprised, we have insufficient space for them all. Nursery opening hours are Monday and Wednesdays, 10am –1pm or by arrangement with Loraine 0438 546 237 or Carol 5854 6371 Introducing Cora, one of the many highly valued volunteers who keep the Nursery in good order.

Girgarre Development Group Notes There was a very well attended meeting of community members, Mayor of the Shire of Campaspe, Adrian Weston, Cr John Zobec and Shire Community Engagement Officer, Jenny Turner at the meeting on Tuesday August 28. All of whom enjoyed a presentation from special guest Ian Bertram, Managing Director of Resource Resolutions here in Girgarre. Ian addressed the meeting regarding the proposed construction of a Bio-Digester on the site of the old Heinz factory. A planning permit has been obtained from the Shire of Campaspe and the company is now waiting on approval from the EPA before beginning to construct a State of the Art factory that would turn waste organic matter into electricity. TINY TOWNS - Small Communities Supporting Each Other
BENDIGO BANK HOUSE - A Community Bank Partnershp A new specialised fifteen room accommodation house has been funded by the Bendigo Bank and it’s associated regional Community Banks. Known as Bendigo Bank House, (the former Alexander Bayne Centre, 15 Bayne Street Bendigo), the fifteen apartments are designed to help patients and their families stay close by the hospital during specialised treatments, ranging from oncology to psychology services, often over multiple days. They aim to ease the financial and emotional burden for patients and their families. Two of the apartments, one double bedroom and one single, have been proudly funded by your local Community Bank here in Rushworth. They are known as the ‘Rushworth and Stanhope Apartments’. Overall, there are eight one bedroom studio rooms, one single bedroom apartment, three two bedroom and three, three bedroom apartments. There is a common kitchen for the studio and single bedroom
units, a lounge, laundry and library facilities as well as a shared workspace with office services. The two bedroom units are self contained. For many patients travelling to Bendigo finding and paying for accommodation during an already emotional time can take its toll. Staying somewhere comfortable and familiar with family and friends can make a challenging time a lot more bearable. Patients and their families can access the website www.bendigobankhouse.com.au for more information and to book accommodation. The Bendigo Bank House; thirteen of its Community Banks in partnership with Bendigo Health, Spotless, Exemplar Health and Gouge invested over $200,000 to establish the Bendigo Bank House. It is a wonderful asset for country folk, we are very proud of our involvement. Christine Borger (Chair)

COMMUNITY - Seniors Looking Back 25th July- July lunch was yummy with enough ham and bone leftover for a nice soup. Nnext week we are going to the pictures to keep out of the cold. Should be a nice cosy day (hopefully we can stay awake to watch the movie). Otherwise we have had a very quiet week.
ure. On the topic of food, Deb’s lamb and vegie shepherd’s pie was delicious with everyone having seconds. Once again the lovely Joy provided a scrumptious bread and butter pudding, thanks Joy. Next week we are breaking out and are off to Merry Melodies. Take care and stay warm.
1st August—Last week we went off to the movies in Echuca. We saw “The Leisure Seeker” with Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, a movie about a runaway couple who go on an unforgettable journey in a faithful old RV they call The Leisure Seeker. We all enjoyed it, though the ending was unexpected. We decided to have lunch at Beechworth Bakery, relishing the warm pastries and good coffee. Next week, we are in house and will be joining our entire Tech for seniors’ participants up to the Australian Governments Be Connected online learning platform.
22nd of August—What a full and noisy house we had this week. The sun was shining and put everyone in high spirits as they met at The Cottage before heading off to the Shepparton RSL. The lounge room was bursting at the seams and the peals of laughter was lovely to hear. Before departure, explicit instructions were handed out for their requirements for next week’s “Follow Your Rubbish Tour” adventure. Mick Tenace performed his classic “Country & Western” music with quite a few people getting up to dance, with line-dancing proving very popular. The RSL was full, a definite sign winters cold grasp is slowly relinquishing its hold. Take care, talk next week!
8th August - What a mind challenging day we had last week. Nerida Dye from Campaspe Library Services joined us for a matchbox games session. You remember on the old Redhead matchboxes, they had the puzzles you had to solve with the matches? Well this was a bigger version of that. We used pop sticks and gee whizz did we have to put the thinking caps on. Debra and Phyllis solved a couple very quickly at the start, thinking they were very clever and then BANG it got really hard. Many giggles were had. To be honest, we are nearly over winter. Looking forward to the warmer weather so we can start venturing out again. This week in-house with a belly warming shepherd’s pie on the menu and a greatly contested game of bingo. 15th August - Wow, what a talk fest we had last week. All of the men folk were away, so we settled in to solve the problems of the world. Oh well not quite, we actually had an in depth discussion about the many and varied sandwich fillings which are possible. Some suggestions were; golden syrup, orange and salt, fresh bread, real butter and grapes! Go fig-
29th August -This week we went on the “Follow Your Rubbish Tour ”with Hilary Gregg ,Waste Education Officer with the Greater Shepparton City Council. Our first stop was the Cosgrove Landfill, followed by Western Composting and then the Shepparton Resource Recovery Centre. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and had lots of questions. The recycling crew were very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. The highlight of the tour would have been the composting section, with all impressed by the scale of operations. Luckily there was not a lot of walking outside as the weather was not on our side, with occasional showers and a very cold wind. We warmed ourselves up with a tasty meal at the Shepparton Club and made it back to the Cottage by 3pm. All in all a great day, long and cold but very informative and enjoyable. A special thanks to Wendy, bus driver extraordinaire who is filling in for Debra, while she is on holidays in Sydney.

AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR RURAL ENTERPRISE On August 8th ACRE, the Australian Centre for Rural Enterprise presented a social enterprise workshop in Girgarre. ACRE is a for-purpose organisation that exists to build thriving rural communities. Community members from Rochester, Tongala and Girgarre attended. Matt Pharlett and Peter Sacco presented the principles behind social enterprise and illustrated how small communities can take charge of their future. A social enterprise is an organisation that trades intentionally to tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people access to employment and training or to help the environment. Girgarre was presented as a great example of a small community reinventing themselves and learning how a social enterprise model can be used to achieve a sustainable future
for rural communities. ACRE has been working with the Girgarre, Victoria community and reviewing the Gargarro masterplan for the development of the Gargarro Gardens. The land for the botanic gardens was gifted to the community by Heinz after they closed their factory in town 5 years ago and will now be a place for events, a place for education and a place for showcasing native planting. Not only is this group working hard to rejuvenate their local community by attracting tourists to the area but they are creating viable growth in the area and supporting the arts, culture, music and the environment. The workshop in Girgarre was organised by Sam Campi, Shire of Campaspe Community Engagement Manager.

Girgarre and District’s Diversified Growers Group This Month the Growers Group visited Cornelia Creek Winery. Along with the grapes grown for their excellent wines the winery also grow persimmons and have a flock of sheep which are kept for both wool and fat lamb production. Discussion centred around the history and development of the business, followed by a discussion about developing markets for their produce and the logistics involved. We then went on a brief farm tour (it was an extremely cold and windy day). We returned to the tasting room for morning tea and some wine tasting, but there were no persimmons as
unfortunately, they were all gone. A great morning was had by all. I would like to thank Merrilyn Cardwell and Lou Dumar for their time and hospitality. I can thoroughly recommend their wines, they are something special, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon. If you would like to become involved in our group, please contact me, Duncan Rodrick on 0427 391 706 or e-mail to Carmundalene@bigpond.com. We will be happy to help. Cheers, Duncan

No Strings On This CFA Crew Girgarre CFA members and their families attended a dinner, trivia night and team building evening on the 14th August at the Girgarre Memorial hall. The evening started with a delicious roast prepared by the Stanhope café followed by a dessert of pavlova and ice cream enjoyed by the 32 strong crowd who were there. The evening was spent answering local trivia questions
about Girgarre, chaired by Trivia Master Jan Smith, as well as questions directly relating to the CFA. The team building exercise had everyone laughing as participants tried to build a pyramid using loops of string, no hands-on allowed. The evening was judged a huge success by the CFA Members, their friends and families. It was well planned by Shaun Halls who was ably assisted by Allan Lauder.
