January Market is Sunday 14th

Greetings everyone! I am writing this on the 20th of December in full Christmas mode, amid Christmas parties and break-ups, graduations and catch-ups. A very busy time, though I am feeling the Christmas spirit and enjoying it all. However, by the time, you read this the Christmas and New Year festivities would have ended and I hope that you have recovered fully. Our Bunnings BBQ was successful and we managed to raise over $500 for our playgroup. Not as much as the previous year, as it was quite slow on the day, but not an amount to be sniffed at. Well done team! Dear readers, please consider helping us next year as many hands make light work and an hour of your time would make the world of difference to us. I will keep you posted as to which dates are allocated to us. We have been quite successful on the ‘grant’ front, with 2018 presenting many exciting opportunities. Thanks to the ‘Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal’ (FRRR) we will run an IT (information technology) for Seniors program, purchasing two new computers, 6 IPad’s and employ a tutor for 30 hours. FANTASTIC! Our Quilters and Patch workers received funding from the Shire of Campaspe for their annual “Quilt-In”” and we received money from the Stanhope LIONS group to purchase a new freezer for our foodbank. Yippee!!! Finally a heartfelt thank you to the St Michael’s Op Shop in Stanhope who donated $200 towards the Community Car. The Christmas spirit of giving is alive and well. Happy New Year and may 2018 bring you peace, happiness and joy. Take care, Kezia Co-ordinator Please note: The Cottage will re open on 8th January. End of Year Principal’s Report

Welcome Ashleigh and Farewell Fiona

In his final newsletter home to parents and friends of the Girgarre Primary School, Principal Peter Caldow thanked the dedicated staff for their creativity and organisation over the past year. He also congratulated Will, Braiden and Harry for successfully completing year 6 and wished them both them well as they head off for new adventures in Secondary School in 2018. Peter also thanked Fiona Smith for her good work with the grade 3-6’s for 3 terms and is looking forward to Ashleigh Buckland joining the fold. Ashleigh will be taking over the grades 3-6 and comes highly recommended. Welcome to Girgarre Ashleigh. Peter also praised the parents for their confidence and support for the school over the years. “The education of each child is a team effort”, he said, “of which the family is the main player”. On behalf of the school staff Peter wished everyone a happy new year. 5

Check out the program now for our brilliant 12th Girgarre Moosic Muster! There’s free community music-making, fun and good times guaranteed. New workshops and much more open mic times are set to make this the best-ever event for both musicians and their audiences. We say our Muster - where all music sessions are completely free of charge - truly is the most affordable and friendly acoustic festival in Victoria. We’ve lined up drumming on the djembe (African drum), a sea shanty singalong, slide guitar, memorising skills and adding elaborate effects to guitar techniques as just some of the new offerings among more than 35 workshops. Another new feature will be a big band made up of beginner players. There’s even a flax weaving workshop for nonplaying partners to enjoy.

And it all begins a day earlier this year, on Thursday

There’s three hours of open mic for those who settle in the camp ground for a great weekend early.

So much on offer - what to choose? The Muster workshops offer bluegrass, folk, blues, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music, it’s a very full Saturday workshop schedule, and there’s continuous jamming throughout the site and adjacent camp ground. The free junior muster, comprising of comic characters, music, crafts, poetry and games, is popular with primary school children. And there’s even free instrument loans If you would like to try something new.

Attracting the largest roll up of all Well, not surprisingly, in the workshops, it’s the harmony singing. So popular it’s usually standing room only. Come on everyone can sing! No solos, just terrific fun with accomplished leaders. Sea Shanties and the 60’s singalong also offer great opportunities to get even more singing if you are not an instrument player. There’s also the special Jigarre Jammin’ community jam, on between 3 and 4pm Friday.

Free Concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings Two fabulous concerts out in the park or in the hall on Friday and Saturday evenings. Plus the Old Time Sunday gospel singalong in the Supper room, followed by the Sunday morning poetry writing; the hilarious joke competition and the fabulous Sunday market with visiting bands playing. Remember what we said - It’s free. www.girgarre.com.au

Girgarre welcomes back Graeme Leak Girgarre’s Artist in Residence last year, the inspired Graeme Leak (pictured right), is due back in Girgarre come February. Part two of the Regional Arts Victoria, Small Towns Transformation project has once again allowed the funding of another 10 week project by Graeme. His program of instrument making from lots of left over junk and other extraordinary items salvaged from farms, tips and people’s back yards, even from the Melb. Symphony Orchestra, created huge interest within the community. The old supermarket became a hub of activity for school children and locals who watched with keen interest this extraordinarily talented man as he turned all manner of junk into interesting items. His 3 month stint last year was largely spent with the school students at Girgarre Primary and concluded with a marvellous musical entertainment by a junk band in the school yard made from old fire extinguishers that chimed; drums from cherry barrels and wind instruments from funnels and piping played by the students. He left us in May with a musical fence made from old pianos and a legacy of interest from a community waiting to see what he comes up with next. On arrival in Girgarre last year, Graeme was pleasantly surprised by the level of interest in his project from both the locals, and the musicians associated with Jigarre Jammin’. Junk instruments were already being built once the idea, floated originally by Nanneella’s Pete Gibson to Jigarre Jammin’ organisers, took hold. “In Girgarre I found folks were way ahead of me” Graeme said. “Their 'Junkstrements' project was well underway with some fantastic models using oil cans, biscuit tins, tennis rackets and milo cans. The standout was Wallace Williams' violin. This extraordinary piece is hand hammered from galvanised sheet metal and is a fully working, well trimmed and tuned fiddle. Wallace is a retired cow farmer in his eighties and is a fine musician and singer also. When I return to Girgarre in February we are going to put together a town 'Junkestra'. I want to add notes, melody and harmony to the junk rhythms and I've been wrestling with ideas for an instrument that can be easily made and played by non-musicians to do the job.” Welcome back Graeme. The anticipation level is building. We’re ready and waiting to take part in your next creative approach to music. Wallace’s tin violin

PLEASE HELP US KEEP OUR CERT RUNNING!! A recent crisis meeting to try and encourage new members to join the Stanhope CERT Team was successful. Ambulance Victoria sent along a staff member who explained CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the process involved in becoming a member. The Stanhope CERT committee thanked those who came along and showed interest and the Ambulance Victoria Staff for attending IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO PUT YOUR NAME DOWN. If 8 people are willing to do the training, the training program can be conducted in Stanhope, making it easier for all to attend. The application process, including interview and paperwork needs to be completed by 15th January 2018 so there’s still time. If you think you can help out or want to know more, contact Pauline Keegan on 0414 495 311. Remember, you don’t need previous experience, full training and support is provided. All you need is a current driver’s licence, a willingness to help your community and the ability to work as part of a team. CERT provides another essential community service in rural areas and volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, meet new people and learn new skills. Frozen banana icy poles

Ingredients: ◦ 2 ripe bananas (a little firmer the better) ◦ 1 cup of dark chocolate chips ◦ Sprinkles (optional) ◦ 6 lollipop sticks or paddle pop (ice-cream) sticks

Directions:  - Peel and cut the bananas into three pieces each so that you have six serves. Let the kids pierce each piece of banana with a lollipop stick. Set aside.  - Place the dark chocolate in a bowl and melt in the microwave at 15 – 20 second intervals, stirring between each time until it is smooth and runny. This is a job best for adults. 

Let the chocolate cool so that it is a little thicker and not too hot to handle. Then you have two ways the kids can coat the banana pops: Dip in the chocolate or hold the banana pops over a bowl and spoon chocolate over the top. Once coated, tap the sticks on the edge of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.

- Roll in the sprinkles and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

- Place in the freezer for at least two hours or until frozen. YUM!

Soak feet nightly in 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water to eliminate odoriferous bacteria. Or, take a daily foot bath in strong black tea (let it cool first) for 30 minutes. Teas tannins kill bacteria and close the pores in your feet, keeping feet dry longer; bacteria tend to thrive in moist environments. You'll see results in a few days to a week.
