Cottage Coordinators Catch-up Greetings everyone! As I am writing this on the 19th of June and we are really experiencing winter this last week, I cannot help but think of the winter solstice. The winter solstice, also known as midwinter, is the day of the year that has the least daylight hours of any in the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the December solstice and in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the June solstice. The summer solstice usually occurs on 22 December, but can occur between 21 and 23 December. The winter solstice usually occurs on 22 June but can occur between 21 and 23 June. This year it is on Thursday 21 June with sunrise at 7.35am and sunset 5.07pm. After this date, the days will become longer and the end of winter will be that much closer! I am not kidding myself, I know we are in for a long, cold spell-but whatever helps you get by. “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” - Edith Sitwell My family did the above on Sunday. As it was the first truly cold and rainy day, we stayed inside, spent time together, watched a movie and had some warm and yummy food. It was lovely! It has been another very busy month here at The Cottage; we have had approximately 217 people visit us. The Community Car was used for 40 hours and travelled 1300km’s. A timely reminder to thank our volunteers drivers for their dedication and to remind you if you would like to assist, please do not hesitate to contact me. We held our Biggest Morning Tea, on Tuesday 29 May and raised $800. Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is Cancer Council Australia's most popular fundraising event and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Last year with our help, they raised an amazing $11.9 million to help beat cancer. A great time with good food and fantastic people. We had lucky door prizes, raffles and a plant auction. If you missed out this year, pop it in your diary for next. Looking forward to seeing you, the heaters are on! Take care and bye for now, Kezia.

Robin Fox says thank you “Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for making Saturday night the amazing experience that it was for me. Wonderful people. Fantastic, engaged audiences and a magical version of the White Beam project. I couldn't be happier with how it went and to top it off with that feast..... just marvellous. I look forward to being back soon to tend to that Theremin. Hoping all are well - and a huge congratulations on acquitting the Small Town Transformation proposition so beautifully. You all make quite the team!”

Steam Rally rolls into town Two steam trucks, one able to travel at 30kmh, two traction engines and a steam roller, rolled into Girgarre on Wednesday 6 June 2018 on their way to Echuca for the Steam Rally. The trip was organised by Adam Auditori. They left Nagambie Tuesday morning travelling to Rushworth where they spent the night, onto Girgarre spending the
night here and on to Nanneella Thursday night arriving in Echuca on Friday ready for the Steam Rally Saturday and Sunday of the Queen’s birthday long weekend. The first Echuca "Steam Rally" was held in 1963, then known as the "Echuca Steam, Horse and Vintage Rally" and is now showcased at Rotary Park, 1-7 Rose St (or off the Northern Highway), Echuca. More details on page 7.
Former local boy, Adam Auditori restored the 1925 F6 Leyland Steam Lorry (right). Adam started looking for a steam wagon at the age of 16. He purchased a chassis and wheels which was then being used as a farm trailer. He restored the chassis and built the cab, then the opportunity to purchase a boiler and engine came along. The chassis came from central Victoria, the boiler from Tasmania and the engine from New South Wales mid coast, the makers plates and some boiler fittings from the UK. The boiler is now back in steam at 200 psi. One of the engines cylinders was cracked and has now been sleeved, all moving parts have been replaced or over-hauled. http://www.leylandsociety.co.uk/gallery2008.htm
Right: Traction engines came from Port Arlington and Warrnambool and were built in 1908 and 1911. Below: 1928 steam roller has been in the Reynold’s family since 1975.
The Super Sentinel (below) was launched in April 1923, temporarily reviving the company's fortunes. As a sign of the times the Super Sentinel was offered in two basic sizes, with 4-5 ton and 6-7 ton load capacities, and up to 24 different body styles, including a flat tray, tipper tray, enclosed vans, tanker “wagon” and even a six-wheeled articulated "semitrailer" version. The Super Sentinel remained in production until 1932, although a more advanced design with the modern style of rear tail-shaft and enclosed differential drive (the "S-type Sentinel") was introduced in 1927. Production of Sentinel steam trucks continued in a limited capacity at Shrewsbury UK until 1951. Of the almost 8,000 Sentinels built in total, over three-quarters were built before 1929. collections.museumvictoria.com.au

Gargarro Botanical Gardens Working Bee Volunteers met at the Gargarro Botanical Gardens for a working bee on Tuesday May 22nd. The guards and stakes were removed from the larger trees and the fire truck hose was used to water larger holes for the bigger stakes. When the trees grow to about two metres, the lower stems are to be removed to encourage a high and wide canopy.

OUR COMMUNITY It was fantastic to have ex-student Adam Auditori drive his steam car past our school on Thursday, along with four other steam driven vehicles. Our children lined Winter Rd and got a first hand view of olden day transport. Adam has kindly offered to have a display at our centenary in November, great community spirit. I recently attended the North Western Principal’s Conference in Melbourne. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to mingle with fellow principals while listening to internationally renowned speakers talking about the direction education Australia is taking. Recently Kirsty ran an information session for new 2019 Preps. Thanks to Brooke for catering for the afternoon. On behalf of our school, Hayley and Jasmine, our two school captains, attended the Kyabram Club receiving a generous donation from the Kyabram Club. Both Hayley and Jasmine spoke about how Girgarre Primary used these funds to help our students attend the Sovereign Hill Costume School in early February. Peter Caldow—Principal.

Girgarre and Districts Diversified Growers Group winter report In the past six months we have been quite busy with a number of visits. In November we visited Diana and Santos farm where their main crop is figs as well as some citrus and asparagus. At our last group get together Santo and Diana where able to report to us how they have found themselves a new agent to take their figs and have been able to sell everything they produced since starting to supply their new agent. We took a break in December, then in January we were able to visit the Bunbartha Beef shop in Shepparton and Kelly (the owner) gave us a talk on the evolution of their business, giving a great insight into the time, effort and dedication it really takes to develop a successful business. Some of you might remember Kelly, she started her business selling her beef at the local markets. Girgarre’s amongst them. Early in March, we visited Rodney and Shirley’s farm where they produce pigs and flowers, mostly dahlias and chrysanthemums. In May we visited Luke and Bec’s farm. They are in the process of becoming organically registered and produce garlic and snow peas with a small flock of sheep. In June we went to Leanne and Paul’s farm which is a true mixed farming operation with pigs as their main
operation, they also raise some calves and sheep as well as cutting a lot of hay and a little bit of horse agistment. The diversified Growers Group is for Growers both large and small who predominantly produce crops or products that are not well supported by other organisations in the local area, with the aims to be the sharing of knowledge and looking for other ways to expand and make our businesses more profitable. Our next meeting will be in August. For more information you can contact Duncan Rodrick, 0427 391 706 or carmundalene@bigpond.com

COMMUNITY Seniors Looking back June 6 - Last week we held our Biggest Morning Tea, raising money for cancer research. We had 30 people attend and delivered morning tea to local businesses, raising nearly $800 for this worthy cause. This week we are in-house, our first winter session, so we will be nice and warm. Debra will whip up some tasty casseroles and we will be playing our new brain training game, which we haven’t yet, so looking forward to the feedback. If we throw a prize in there, it should all be positive! Next week, we are off to the Shepparton RSL, already fully booked sorry, as we have some new people joining us. June 13 - Last week we were in house with a tasty and a tad spicy curried sausages with rice; they were lovely and warming. The brain training game was enjoyed, got us all thinking and produced quite a few laughs. The Shepparton RSL entertainer this week is Tom Rutledge who is liked by all, with his country style. This week we are all looking forward to Robin Fox’s light show. A combination of seven lasers working together to produce a flood of light constructing the Girgarre Constellation. June 20 - Last week we had a slight debacle with our bus, making us nearly miss our Merry Melodies in Shepparton. It was booked out at the last moment and we were likely to be stranded in Girgarre. However, the team rallied and we had some lovely people; Joy, Theresa and Debra- volunteer to car pool, so we made it in the end! Pork must be the cheapest meat at the moment, as it has been the roast of the day for our last three visits, very nice as it is. This week we are in-house with Marg (one of our wonderful seniors) offering to cook soup and dessert to give Debra a break…or is it??? Maybe she doesn’t like Debra’s love of chilli! Keep well! June 27 - The seniors decided to give Debra a break from cooking last week, with the lovely Margaret making a chicken and vegetable soup-without a chilli in sight! Dessert was a lovely sticky date pudding, thanks Marg! Lunch was followed by a quiet game of bingo and a chat catching up with local news and activities, because if you haven’t noticed there has been quite a lot going on in Girgarre at the moment. This week we are in house for a meal and a movie, hopefully we will manage to stay awake and not doze off during the show. The Girgarre Seniors meet every Tuesday at 10:45am at the Girgarre Community Cottage. Join them for lunch on the first Tuesday, then fortnightly. They also conduct shopping trips and provide transport to Shepparton for Merry Melodies and other outings. For more information, contact The Cottage on 5854 6482

The CFA would like to remind you to check your home heating appliances, including the bathroom “Tastic“ lights and heater globes. These may include a fan which will need cleaning. GREEN THUMBS NURSERY
After the market on Sunday someone commented on the commitment of our volunteers at the market and in the nursery. Not something we think much about until we are trying to plan a holiday, weekend away, appointment or meeting avoiding Girgarre market day also Mondays and Wednesdays, the days our nursery is open to the public. The routine was established early when a craft market added to Girgarre Farmers, Produce Market back in 2005. Sometimes we grumble when the alarm arouses us at 4.45 am. From habit we have porridge before leaving home. Usually four volunteers arrive at 6 am (always relieved we prepared the hall on Saturday) to open up, turn on lights and make sure the urn is full. Putting the new gazebo on site takes two strong men who know what they are doing, four or more if they don’t. At this time of year it’s too dark to recognize the plants until after 7 am, but amazingly a garden enthusiast spies a plant that looks like an orchid in flower still on the trailer and it’s sold, put aside

to be picked up later. Somehow all plants are placed on the tables. Time now to check the urn is boiling, our early stallholders will be looking for a cuppa and so are we. Dawn has broken at last we can see to properly rearrange the stall. Always difficult to resist the aroma of the best ever bacon and egg rolls prepared and delivered by Girgarre CFA volunteers, so we consume another breakfast to add centimetres to our waistlines. Early birds (other site holders) arrive for a sneak preview hoping for a bargain before being swamped by their customers. The car park is filled with sites, ranging from moccasins, succulents, handmade craft, wood turned items, candles, “wacky signs” children’s free activity site and the nursery. Our regulars in the hall remind us to put out the sandwich board sign to entice people inside. Other sections of the craft area are sparsely covered on this holiday weekend but they are busy with a steady stream of foot traffic passing to and from the chook auction. It’s pleasantly warm despite the cold start and time passes quickly so the crowd linger until the official closing 12
time. There’s plenty to do now, replace unsold plants in trays on the trailer, dismantle the tables and pack up the gazebo, it’s easier to take down. Suddenly we are fatigued and while one volunteer sheepishly finds a chair the other four continue packing away tables and chairs in the hall. The floor is swept and needs washing but will wait until tomorrow. Plants are returned to the nursery. We are tired but satisfied with another successful market. Volunteer hours on the day 29. Green Thumbs Nursery is located at the rear of the Cottage, 27 Olympic St, Girgarre. Open Monday & Wednesday 10am-1pm. Please call to avoid disappointment Loraine 0438 546 237, Carol 5854 6371.
