COTTAGE COORDINATORS CATCH UP Greetings everyone! It has been a very busy month here at The Cottage; we have had over 200 people visit us. Many of those have popped into the nursery for some last minute gardening ideas/plants before the weather becomes far too cold. We held our inaugural Mother’s Day Classic on the th 13 of May and I must say I was more than impressed with the turn out. We were hoping for 30 entries and received 50. The donations that were made were outstanding, bringing the total amount raised for breast cancer research to just under $1500.00. A huge thank you must go to Sandy Fletcher co-organiser and driving force, the amazing volunteers; Erin Potter, Koralynn Carroll, Karen Couston, Chloe Kavanagh, Marg Snelling, Katie & Ben Fletcher and my own children Ellie, Lane and Clarry Talbot. That was one of my Mother’s day gifts, no whinging when I woke them up at 6am to come and assist...lol! I also must acknowledge our sponsors; Major sponsor Forbes and Summers, Ky Party Hire and Ian Collie Pharmacy. In case you were not able to join us on the day, the following was part of my welcome and introduction which will give you an idea of the focus and feeling of the event.
occurs continues to grow, touching more and more of the pond until it reaches the shore. As the ripple extends it engulfs the immediate family, then moves to the extended family. From there friends and work colleagues are affected, that ripple is why we are here. We are all here today for different reasons - to pay tribute to our Mums, to remember a loved one who has passed away from breast cancer, or to offer our support to those who are currently undergoing treatment. But most importantly, we are here to help the National Breast Cancer Foundation work towards their goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. This is especially close to my heart, and I thank you for being here. Before we commence the Girgarre MDC, I ask you to think of those you know who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and those close to them who have also been impacted by this devastating disease – partners, children, parents, friends and work colleagues. Please join me in remembering these people with one minute of silence.”
Thank you everyone for your support and I am sure it will continue for our Biggest Morning Tea, being held on Tuesday the 29th of May. The Final Musical Fling for 2018. Graeme Leak called from Scotland recently. He sends his warm regards to the Girgarre Community and informs us he is busy planning the next steps for the Junkestra. Good news. Graeme conducted a final workshop at April’s Jigarre Jammin’ camp weekend. It was very popular, everyone playing along to the tune of ‘Sway Me’. After that, it was tidy up the old supermarket and say goodbye’s to all his new friends before heading back to the UK for a well earned rest and many new projects. 3

The Rich Fabric of Girgarre A large crowd of local and district residents along with Graham Coffey, Co-ordinator of the Regional Arts Victoria Small Towns Transformation Program and RAV representative, Edwina Guiness, Shire of Campaspe Councillors, Annie Vickers, Vicki Neale and John Zobec were all warmly welcomed to the Grand Unveiling of the ‘Fabric of Girgarre - Past Present and Future’ by MC Lisa Smith on Friday evening 11 May . The Quilted panels, now permanently displayed on the back of stage wall in the Girgarre Hall, are a stunning masterpiece and a credit to the 20 or so enthusiastic quilters (pictured below) who have spent
many hours piecing it together. It’s a beautiful, visual addition to the Spirit of Revival flowing through the Girgarre community at the moment. Flowers were presented to designer and leader of the quilters, Gloria Loughman who resides in the Bellarine Peninsular. Gloria estimated she had travelled 5000 Kms back and forth during the project, loving every minute of it. The significance of each panel and the process the community had undertaken before designing and building the panels was explained to the audience before the evening concluded with the usual Girgarre style supper.

Kinder Gardens Upgrade - Community at its best The Girgarre Community Kindergarten lived up to the name ‘Community’ with an amazing effort over the holidays resulting in an outdoor area in the Kinder grounds to be thoroughly proud of. Kyabram Preschool Management Committee’s PAC approved lead educator Robyn’s request for funding to buy some plants to refresh the gardens. Green Thumbs Nursery were extremely generous in supplying the plants to budget and then provided whatever we needed to finish the job as a donation. Not only that, but two of the nursery’s hard working ‘gnomes’ along with kinder family members spent an afternoon planting, watering, adding stepping logs throughout the gardens, moving and topping up unused planter boxes with new soil and a prune lopping effort that was second to none. To finish off the upgrade a Kinder Working Bee was held on Sunday 15 April 2018. Des from the Stanhope Men’s
Shed was on hand to install a larger garden bed that the Shed has kindly donated, as well as the soil required to fill it. Educators and families from Girgarre Kinder combined forces to install some additions to our playground equipment (thanks to Knights Kyabram for the supplies), wheelbarrow the mulch onto the gardens & mow the lawns. The following week was the first of term two. The children were taken by Robyn on a ‘magical mystery tour’. They loved the new stepping logs and were happy to report that so far so good, there were no plant fatalities. The old strawberry patch was dug up and the plants replanted into the new planter box. They also discovered some hidden bulbs starting to sprout so they too were replanted. A huge thanks to all those that were involved in revamping Girgarre Community Kindergarten so it resembles, on the outside, the warm and inviting kindergarten that it is on the inside!

OUR COMMUNITY Rushworth and District Community Bank Working Together to Achieve Outcomes What a month for Girgarre, I was very proud to represent Rushworth and District Community Bank and launch the unveiling of the spectacular “Fabric of Girgarre-Past, Present and Future” quilt. Congratulations to Gloria Loughman and her team of talented artists for the design and creation of such a work of art. Another wonderful project in the small town revival project, and displayed magnificently in the Memorial Hall. Myself and fellow directors are delighted to be partnering with this terrific community with the sponsorship of $40,000.00. To support the projects like the launching of the quilt project and the recent opening of the Soundshell, with the Jigarre Jammers playing on it, brings a wonderful feeling of a community coming together. We are very proud of our partnership and ongoing relationship with Girgarre and now look forward to the spectacular display of the Sound and Light Show on 16th June. The sponsorship and support of our small communities can only continue if you all support the Community Bank, contact the staff at either Stanhope or Rushworth,
and discuss your financial requirements, insurance, superannuation, banking, credit cards, travel insurance, all the products the big 4 offer. The point of difference with supporting our Community Bank is that your community gets the benefits. Profits come back to those who support us, our Community Bank also provides sponsorship of $5,000.00 to the Moosic Muster each year. Consider what any of the big 4 have given your community in the past ,can I suggest nothing. Our committed staff at Rushworth Branch and the Stanhope Service Centre are eager to help you, no recorded messages just face to face service. If you support us we can continue to support you. My congratulations to the staff at the Cottage for the wonderful work they all do, and the services offered, my visit to the plant nursery was such fun, selecting from such an amazing array of plants, thank you Loraine. This community venture epitomizes the philosophy of Community Banking, looking after our community. Christine Borger. Chair, Rushworth & District Financial Services Ltd.

COMMUNITY Looking back - the Seniors Monthly Review May 2. The recent camel farm expedition to Camel Milk Victoria farm on Webb Road was a hit with our Senior’s. We tasted and tested numerous products; from camel milk, feta cheese (which was delicious) to ointments and creams. Our tour guide Ti, was extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. We had a great time getting up close and personal to the camels. We were even able to feed the babies and although they tried to eat Debra’s hair, she still thinks they are lovely. This was followed by lunch in Kyabram at Three620 restaurant which was enjoyed by all. The New owners are ensuring that the service is exemplary. It’s our final Tech for seniors session until July next week. May 9. We were in-house last week, with a lovely lunch and lively conversation. The men were chatting about footy, claiming that Gig were doing quite well and may make it into the finals (early days yet). As The Gazette was hot of the press, it was devoured and analysed at length focussing on the Soundshell opening and the Quilt-In. Our Tech for Seniors session focussed on each individual and what they have learnt so far, solidifying the knowledge before we break. Our tech sessions will be recommencing on the 3rd of July. This week we are off to the RSL Club in Shepparton for Merry Melodies. We have a different performer, Craig Giles, so we are looking forward to something new. Next week, we have a special guest coming to speak to us. May 16. Last week we went to Shepparton and thoroughly enjoyed a performance by Craig Giles who covered a range of genres and artists from Elvis, Neil Sedaka to country
and western. The RSL was packed, standing room only. We have never seen it like this and as we joked about the possibility of running out of food. However, they had plenty of off menu alternatives available, so everyone was fed. This week we are having Karen Gascoyne from Warramunda Home Care coming to talk to us about the ins and outs of the governments “My Aged Care” program, what is available and how to access. Next week, we are off on the “Follow Your Rubbish Tour”, it is meant to be very interesting and not too stinky!!! We will let you know. 23rd May. Last week we were in-house for a lovely roast chicken dinner…thank you Debra. We were lucky enough to have Karen Gascoyne visit us from Warramunda to discuss the My Aged Care program and how it assists in Home Care packages. We also discussed Retirement Living, residential Aged care and the NDIS scheme. A very informative session, which our Seniors enjoyed because of the intimate setting. This allowed plenty of time for questions and tailored oneon-one answers. This week, we were meant to go on the Follow Your Rubbish Tour, which unfortunately had to be postponed until August. So we will be in-house with a delicious warm meal and a new brain stimulating game. Watch this space!!! Next week we are going to be in-house celebrating our Biggest Morning Tea, with games, raffles and auctions (not to mention many yummy treats) to raise money for cancer research. Please join if you can, starting time 11am. Kezia.
Waiting for the handout, always hungry like a lot of the young and growing. Helen Young and Debra Stelzer oblige.
THE GIRGARRE SENIORS The Girgarre Seniors meet every Tuesday at 10:45am at the Girgarre Community Cottage. Join them for lunch on the first Tuesday, then fortnightly. They also conduct shopping trips and provide transport to Shepparton for Merry Melodies and other outings. For more information, contact The Cottage on 5854 6482

WORDS ON WHEELS
Lion’s Club Stolen Generator There’s been a break in at the Stanhope Lion’s Club shed in the Stanhope Recreation Reserve. A 7.5 hp Crommelines generator, used to help raise much needed funds to help local organisations and needy families, was taken from the shed recently. Although the police have been investigating, the hard working volunteer club members would appreciate any information you may have. Stanhope Lions is a small club of just eight members. This is a significant loss for them. The generator will not be easily replaced. Contact Avis Weller (President) Ph:0409 438 386, confidentially, if you can help.
This month the focus was on Val and Keith Maudsley (pictured left), who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Val was presented with a lovely bunch of flowers and Joy Walton made a lovely Black Forest celebration cake. The fourteen people present enjoyed a 3 course meal of soup, cooked by Wendy Burke with help from Loraine Warde. The soup, quiche or chicken casserole and steamed pudding was enjoyed by all. WOW Leader, Carol Ohlin led a stimulating discussion on Notable Leaders of the World. The subjects were well known people like Martin Luther King and Hitler amongst others. WOW meets on the third Tuesday evening each month in the function room at the Cottage for a meal and discussion. Subjects are provided by the Campaspe Library in Echuca. GREEN THUMBS NURSERY
Supporting your community car
Carol’s Tips -
Another busy month. Tidying the nursery is extremely time consuming. Created space is terrific but disappears, to be immediately filled by other plants. During summer and autumn we propagated over 1000 native cuttings. Some started early, already potted on, others need several more months before they are ready. Warm autumn days enabled us to continue taking cuttings longer than planned. By November we should know how worth while this decision has been. A high success level would ensure plentiful supplies next season. We have buddleias, zygos in flower, a range of natives including callistemon and native hibiscus at the nursery. There are bargains galore available from the nursery on Mondays & Wednesdays in June. These include named day lilies with photos, still good value at $4, with of plenty time to establish before next flowering season (spring to autumn). There are also numerous plants including some larger succulents just needing a new home or little TLC. Priced very reasonably along with sprouting jonquil bulbs reduced to $4 per full shopping bag. In the cottage garden osteospermums (African daisies), salvias and sages are all very tough and tolerate most conditions. Because they are providing late autumn colour we have delayed cutting them back. Now the salvias will be tip pruned as they finish flowering. Last year we pruned salvias hard before winter and some were slow to recover, so we will leave more of this years growth until the shoots sprouting at the base toughen up. Tidying of the osteospermums to remove spindly growth will improve their appearance, if necessary further pruning may carried out in early spring. The Nursery is located at rear of the Cottage 27 Olympic St. Girgarre. Open Mondays & Wednesdays 10am - 1pm. Volunteers normally in attendance. Just in case we are not ,and if coming a distance, please call to avoid disappointment. Loraine 0438 546 237, Carol 5854 6371. Congratulations to the 20 or so children who had fun making some crafty cards and gifts for their Mum’s on Mothers Day at market. We were impressed by the three siblings who made a gift for their Grandma who was in hospital. 12

COMMUNITY Loved the Junkestra and want to learn more? If there’s one thing to be said about ukulele players, it’s that once they pick up on the instrument, their enthusiasm knows no bounds and they become extremely dedicated to their musical art. At the moment, there are about twelve players who meet twice, sometimes three times a month in the function room at the Girgarre Community Cottage, where they hone their uke playing skills; occasionally write a song and mostly have a lot of fun. Formerly known as the Girgarre Ukulele Mates (GUM) they recently changed their name to ‘Jigarre Ukuleles’, or in the good old Aussie way, shortened it up to, ‘J-Ukes’. They all met while taking part in Girgarre’s Jigarre Jammin’ program and felt the name Jigarre Ukuleles better reflects their connection with the program. Led by Jigarre Jammer Lyn Cosham, (pictured left) a talented ukulele, ukulele bass player and member of the Pure Drop Celtic/Australiana band, Lyn has a strong musical
background formed from learning banjo mandolin from a young age. The program she offers covers everything from beginners to advanced and every stage in between. “Our aim is to have fun and learn something with other people who share our passion for our small instrument” she said “Soprano, concert, baritone, tenor, bass, we have them all. Players come from a wide area around Girgarre and everyone is welcome. For $2, the Cottage folk welcome us and we chat, play, learn, laugh and have a cuppa on the 1st, 3rd and, sometimes, 5th Wednesday every month from February to November, from 1.30pm to 4pm.” If you would like to join them, contact Lyn on 5859 0297 email kenlyn23@outlook.com or just turn up, you’ll be most welcome! They’re just another of the of the great success stories stemming from the Jigarre Jammin’ program. Ukulele is great fun, inexpensive way to enjoy music and friendship. Don’t hold back, it’s one of the easiest instruments to learn to play.

KYABRAM TOWN HALL There’s nothing quite like a dedicated and passionate band of volunteers when it comes to kick starting a small idea into a vision splendid, especially when the vision goes on to be a success well above initial expectations. The Kyabram Town Hall Committee are a local group of volunteers who’ve been more than successful in bringing to fruition the vision for a dedicated Art Space in what was once the under used Kyabram Town Hall. An Art Space was sorely needed in the district and the volunteer committee are to be congratulated on the success it has become. Exhibition after exhibition of fabulous heritage clothing is an ongoing feature in the Isobel Harvey Gallery. These, along with some diverse art projects, have attracted bus loads of
visitors from near and far. The Town Hall has three dedicated galleries with regularly changing exhibitions. In the Isobel Harvey Gallery, the ‘Masquerade Ball’ exhibition is on until the end of June. The Contemporary Art Gallery currently has Tom Bolton’s ‘Sketches from Somewhere’ and the Splinters Art Group ‘Natural Beauty’ showing until August. Coming soon to the Classic Gallery will be an exhibition of art work by Rob Burns and Marilyn Danieli. Entry is by donation to all Galleries except for the Isobel Harvey Exhibitions (Adults $8, Conc. $6, Family $10). Plenty to enjoy. Open daily 10 am-4pm, closed Sundays. Girgarre RSL Anzac Day Golf and Bowls Tournament
Last year's winners of the RSL Anzac Day Open Triples Bowls Event had to be satisfied with being this year's runner up despite winning all their games.. (See photo below). The local Girgarre team of Greg Fitzpatrick, Barry Fletcher and Mark Summers won all their games but were beaten on a count back by the eventual winners from Tatura of John Tucker (S), Peter and Josh LeSueur. Both teams won their three games and scored the same number of points but the Tatura group claimed the prize on shots up. Never mind, with the wonderful generosity of numerous sponsors there were many vouchers, goods and services to be dished out as prizes. President Laurie Young on giving out winner awards made mention of the numerous sponsors who so kindly donated to the days events. Laurie also thanked the golf and
bowls organisers and the Valley View Golf and Bowls Club who annually allow the RSL use of the venue on Anzac Day. Funds raised will assist Girgarre RSL in the local community. Golf Winners were - Ladies Pairs -Gloria Pell and Dot Bennett. Runners Up - Bev Lyon and Marilyn West. Men's Pairs - Peter Blackmore and Paul Dickens. Calloway winner - Andrew Allen R/Up Ben Fletcher. Closest to the pin - Les Hall. "A Gd" - Lawrie Casey R/up Peter Dickens. Girgarre Football Netball Club News On the 12 May, the FNC held a Purple Weekend and raised money for The Gift, a local district Charity. The fundraiser was an iPod Shuffle night, which raised $770. Half was distributed to The Gift and half went to the winner of the last song played. It was a really good night enjoyed by all. Shave For A Mate Girgarre was congratulated by the Stephen Allingham family of Mathoura NSW recently when Mathoura FNC held a fundraiser for Stephen, who has cancer. Girgarre FNC came on board and were well represented in the competition, held on 20 May. Well done.
