COTTAGE COORDINATOR’S CATCH-UP “Volunteers are not paid—not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!” In every Gazette, I have a standard “Want to Help?” section. One of the Committee members, suggested that I should expand on this in the hope that it would bring more volunteers in by clarifying what is available for you here at the Cottage. We currently have over 30 volunteers on our books, which is extraordinary! However, we are always looking for more. Some volunteers come in once a week, some come in once a year. We have some that are rostered on and come on specific days every week. It is really up to the individual and how much time they have on their hands. Every situation is different and if you are a grandparent looking after the littlies, you may only be able to pop in here or there, same as if you are a shift worker. We understand and appreciate this, but if you would like to volunteer, we have many different opportunities for you.
“One of the greatest gifts you can give is your time.” As mentioned, you can assist as little or as often as you like, areas we need assistance in are; Community Car Drivers, Plant Nursery, Open Garden Festival, Girgarre Gazette, Market Stall, Admin/Reception, Committee of Management, Seniors program, Cooking/Meal Prep, Foodshare collection and more. If you are interested and would like to come in and have a chat, please feel free to drop in and see me or give me a call. May events (as follows), please share and support! Looking forward to seeing you, any enquiries please do not hesitate to contact me. Take care and bye for now, Kezia.

SPIRIT OF GIRGARRE RISING - JUST THE BEGINNING A BALMY EVENING encouraged a record turnout of well over 600 to the Girgarre Gargarro Gardens Gala Opening concert in the Gargarro Soundshell on Saturday 21 April. The Junkestra Orchestra were in fine form and Maestro Graeme Leak guided them through the intricacies of the beautiful ‘Spirit Rising’ piece he had written especially for them. There were Line Dancers; a large contingent of Jigarre Jammers and the Rushworth and District Concert Band, all of whom distinguished themselves with their polished and professional approach to the event. The CFA representatives created a stir when they let off a couple of loud smoke bombs; the smoke rising in the darkened sky like two pillars of fire. They then entered right into the spirit of the piece as they paraded past the audience. “It was amazing, I’m so glad I came. My grandson was fascinated by the Junkestra instruments, he thought the whole thing was too short, and he loved the conductor telling Doc McDonald when to rev up his farm bike”. These comments from a district resident, a dedicated country music and Slim Dusty fan. Girgarre Development Chair, Jan Smith, was thrilled with the evening. “The rain, although welcome, dampened everything for a short while.” She said recently. “However, Graeme and the Junkestra musicians made the most of the delay by rehearsing and fine tuning the program. It was a wonderful evening, we did not want the first performance to be an ‘Official Opening’ of the Gargarro Soundshell as such. We wanted to celebrate the achievements of the many wonderful volunteers, locally and from surrounding districts, who wholeheartedly embraced our ideas from the very beginning, and who put
in so many hours to bring it all to fruition. It would not have happened with out them, or without the dedicated team from the Girgarre Development Group who worked with the professionals who designed and built it. I want to mention the 32 Junkestra Players, they were magnificent. Many of them travelled more than once a week from as far afield as Numurkah and Bendigo to attend rehearsals. I also want to make a special commendation to Wallace Williams from Kyvalley and Pete Gibson, from Nanneella. They both worked tirelessly with Graeme to fine tune and build so many of the instruments we used”. Regional Arts Victoria,, Small Towns Transformation Manager, Graham Coffey, was introduced by MC, Lisa Smith. Graham spoke briefly about the Small Towns Transformation program across Victoria. He said he was proud of the spirit of Girgarre and proud of the progres we're making. Girgarre was the leading applicant during the selection process, and he added that he always looked forward to being here. The evening wound up with a large group of Jigarre Jammers playing a selection of the songs played at their regular Jigarre Jammin’ monthly sessions. What happens next, is this the end of the Junkestra? Not according to Jan, who said that the organisers were developing many more exciting events for Girgarre. The future is looking good for the beautiful Soundshell, and a whisper tells us we will be seeing more of Graeme Leak in future. Patti Harrison, on behalf of the Junkestra players, presented Graeme with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Orchestra members and Lisa and Jan presented Graeme with a ‘Certificate of Citizenship’ from Girgarre. A fitting close to a wonderful evening.

It shows the Girgarre Memorial Hall front and centre, with rays of colour radiating out signify our diverse groups and people; the water; pastures and sunshine. Beautiful amalgamation of many original concepts. Various applications of the logo’s use were demonstrated. Girgarre Website Launch - www.girgarre.com.au -Melissa Crow, from Youlissys Creative, has been the mastermind behind making our ideas a reality. Many, many hours have been invested into bringing this project to completion both by Melissa who did the design work and Lisa Smith who liaised with the Girgarre community. Melissa took all members present on a virtual tour through the fabulous new website. Each group will control their own content while the management of the website is to be completed by four administrators, Naomi Kelly, Lyn Cosham and Sally Canny and Lisa Smith. Ongoing funding of the website will be funded by Girgarre Development Group and the Girgarre Community Cottage. Girgarre Development Group Meeting- Soundshell - The launch of the soundshell with the premier performance of the Spirits Rising after having been delayed due to the weather turned out to be an amazing musical experience. Graeme Leak’s efforts were awe inspiring in the choreographing and organising of this production. This was the first of many exciting events at this new performance space with plans already afoot for next year’s Moosic Muster. A huge thank you to Doc McDonald who was the Project manager- many, many hours were invested in bringing this wonderful space to completion. A huge thank you to all involved in the organisation of this great event Doc Mc Donald reported - a huge debt of gratitude was due to Bourke’s Construction and the Zobec Brothers. Power has finally been connected to the site after many setbacks – this has been a less than positive experience dealing with service providers. Temporary fencing will be installed around the Soundshell. Market - April’s market experienced good crowds and lots of extra stalls. Greg Fitzpatrick reported that the chook auction broke all records for the number of pens (about 600) - reasonable returns were realised. Jigarre Jammin’ - This coming weekend will see the Jigarre Jammin camp over return. The camp over will again feature walk-up concerts and Jam on Friday evening; Graeme Leak will run workshops on Saturday morning; normal Jigarre Jammin’ will be held in the afternoon; a concert on Saturday evening will complete the day. All welcome $5 entry Quilters & Patchwork- Sandra McDonald reported that preparation is well under way for the launching of the quilt. George advised that the fire truck is available for watering. Market Events - Bill Casey reported a pleasing 1st vegetable competition, with six entries. More advertising and notice next year will certainly be even more successful. Nursery - Loraine reported the nursery is joining with the GDG to have an activity table associate with the Green Thumbs stall at the May Market. Arts, crafts, making cards, succulents free to all those interested. Landcare - Bernie Fitzpatrick reported that the group had completed a grant application for further development of the walking track. KID’S CROSSWORD
www.girgarre.com.au Girgarre now has an official Town Brand; a very smart Logo and a new up to date website, thanks to Nerida Hippisley of Flying Pig Designs, Tatura (for the logo), and Melissa Crow, Youlissys Designs, Mansfield and Lisa Smith from (Minds At Work) Melbourne for the website. Representatives from all local groups in Girgarre were at the launch of the logo and website on Tuesday 24 April. They applauded all the hard work it’s taken to get to this final stage. Each group has, over the last 12 months, been involved in many discussions and ‘think tanks’ with the professionals. It’s all come together well. What we now have is very professional, stylish and quite beautiful. It is available for all groups to use when promoting Girgarre and their group.
ANZAC SERVICE 2018 IN JUST about complete darkness Girgarre RSL president Laurie Young commenced the Anzac Dawn Service by welcoming Stanhope President Phil Chapman, Councillor John Zobec and community members. A prayer was read by RSL member Robyn Hunt and a requiem was read by Laurie Young. Secretary John Crilly read a eulogy for local WW1 digger Alfred ‘Dicky’ Edwin Dickman who lost his life in the battlefields of the Western Front on 11th June 1918 just 5 months before the war's end and 100 years ago. The laying of wreaths and poppies was then performed by the Girgarre and Stanhope RSL Presidents, Councillor John Zobec and members of the community. A bugler was in attendance to perform the last post, followed by a
minute's silence and reveille. This moment of tranquillity was a time for those in attendance to remember the sacrifices of war and to reflect on the appreciation and sacrifices that we owe to those who have served this country. With the sun beginning to rise, the flag raising ceremony was performed with local Girgarre Primary School children assisting RSL members. The playing of the Australian National anthem and the New Zealand National anthem concluded the solemn occasion and everybody was then invited to the Girgarre RSL rooms to partake of tea, coffee, biscuits and a sausage sizzle. Numbers of around 150 were estimated to be in attendance.

GIRGARRE COMMUNITY COTTAGE Seniors Notes 4 April: Last week we went to the Chanter Estate Military Museum in Moama. Our gentlemen folk enjoyed it immensely, as it was filled with old motorcycles, horse drawn equipment and commercial and military vehicles. Some of which have appeared in films; “The Sullivan’s”, “Mission Impossible” and “My Brother Tom” to name a few. The museum is a 100 year old church relocated from Rochester, well worth a look in itself. To our pleasant surprise the wine cellar and tastings were available. A couple of our females members propped up the bar for a while enjoying a tipple or two. Then we went to the Moama RSL for lunch which featured more military paraphernalia and enjoyed a two course meal. Next week we are in house for a meal and our “Tech for Seniors” program, where we will start exploring IPads. 11 April: We hope you had a safe and relaxing Easter enjoying your time with family and friends. The last two weeks have been very relaxing with an lovely day in-house on the 3rd of April. Bingo was played and won by Joy,
several times…she was on fire!!! Our Tech for Seniors program went well with an introductory lesson on exploring Ipads, opening apps, deleting unwanted data and taking photos. On the 10th, we headed over to Shepparton for our monthly RSL meal and entertainment fix. We were thrilled to have Anthony Tenace (Elvis impersonator) and his son Little Elvis (Levi, 8 years old). It was Little Elvis’ first performance and what he may have lacked in experience, he more than made up for with exuberance. Enjoyed by all. 25 April: We had a lovely catch up last week, our numbers were slightly down, as members are flitting around the country side on holidays. Bingo seems to be the current flavour of the month, I think they are trying to knock Joy from her winners podium or they want the prize! Either way, no success as Joy won again. Tech for Seniors ran again, all feedback is extremely positive- still exploring iPads and smart phone applications as requested by participants. Next week we are off to the Camel farm, for a tour, followed by lunch at Three620. Enquires please contact The Cottage on 5854 6482.

OUR COMMUNITY Rushworth and District Community Bank Working Together to Achieve Outcomes CONGRATULATIONS GIRGARRE. Despite the wet and wild weather causing the postponement of the Gala Opening of the Gargarro Soundshell the week before, what a magnificent evening and performance it was on Saturday April 21st. Congratulations on a magnificent event Girgarre. The Gargarro Committee is to be commended; the Junkestra, and Graeme Leak, well done. The organisation and support music was exceptional. What a fabulous night we all had. Members of our Board and staff were so proud to be partners with this wonderful occasion for Girgarre, a great example of a small community excelling again. Rushworth & District Community Bank was initially funded by a capital raise in the community over 15 years ago. Local residents purchased shares for $1.00 to open the bank branch in Rushworth. Owning shares in your Community Bank not only pays dividends annually but as a shareholder, you can see firsthand the benefits of your investment through local community projects and sponsorships like the amazing
Gargarro Soundshell. Rushworth & District community Bank are proud investors of $40,000 into this incredible project. Thanks to ongoing positive business growth and continued support for our Community Bank we have been able to continue to thank shareholders with annual dividends. Without our shareholders, the Community Bank would not be viable and we could not have returned banking services to Rushworth, Stanhope and the district as well as invest over $800,000 into the community since opening in 2002. If you are interested in owning shares in your Community Bank, speak to Kevin Livingston in the Rushworth branch and he will take you through the process of investing in your Community. The more of your business you do with us, all the more communities like yours benefit. It secures the sponsorships program will continue well into the future. Zoos are calling on you to recycle your old mobile phone, routers, ADSL modems and cables to help save one of our closest living relatives. A rare mineral ore called coltan, found in many mobile phones and other items, is mined in gorilla habitat. The mining is accelerating the decline in gorilla numbers and at least 10 other African primate species. By simply recycling an old mobile phone, the pressure on gorilla habitat is reduced and money raised from refurbished mobile phones supports conservation projects in Africa.

Girgarre Bowlers Sought Secretary of the Girgarre Carpet Bowlers, Theo George was pleased with the results of a successful fund raising raffle the Bowlers held for Easter in April. The prizes were nice baskets of Easter Eggs. The competition drawn winners were drawn on 29 April, first prize went to James Owen, second to Barry Taylor and third to Lexie Massey. On the 5 April they held a practice night and a come-and-meet your new members evening. Organisers were pleased to have bowlers come from Rushworth, Lancaster and Kyabram to join them. The second practise night on 12 April saw members from Tatura, Lancaster, Kyabram, Merrigum and Wyuna join in and some ends were played on the mats. Theo also said he was pleased with the turn out as it included some younger members. He also said he would now like to see a few more local Girgarre people join in. Theo can be contacted on 0428 740 976 if you are interested.
’The Dry’ - A GOOD READ by Jane Harper The Dry is the first of a series of novels by Australian Jane Harper, it has received many accolades and is a good, gripping read. Set in a parched farming community in Australia, it’s an atmospheric mystery thriller set in a farming region that hasn’t seen rain in two years. Something here in northern Victoria we can all relate too. The Dry introduces us to a Federal Police Office, Det. Aaron Falk, back visiting his home town for the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke. He then gets caught up, unofficially, investigating the mysterious deaths of Luke and his family, who had in childhood been his neighbour’s family. Deaths that at first glance seems like a murder-suicide. It leads Det. Falk back into his own history in the town and another death that has haunted the town for decades, an event that saw Aaron and his father leave the district under a cloud. It is a good read. The Dry is available at all good bookstores and On Line. Jane Harpers second book with Det. Aaron Falk is ‘Force of Nature’. Available now.

PAINTING IN PATCHWORK One hundred and sixty keen Patch workers met in the Girgarre Hall on April 16th to celebrate the 30 years of Patchwork in Girgarre, it was also their 25th ‘Quilt In’. Quilters came from as far away as Taree and Deniliquin in NSW. The group was thrilled to have Carol Martin, now living in Echuca, one of the founding members of Girgarre Patchwork and Quilters join them for the day. Other founding members acknowledged on the day, were Nancy Harris who died last year aged 94, Thelma Mazzetti, now living in Pakenham, Donalda Walker from Kyabram and Shirley Pyke. Guest Speaker, Jan Smith spoke of the wonderful happenings in Girgarre and there was an large display of individual quilts to inspire everyone. The birthday cake was made up of 30 small cupcakes, lit by Shirley Pyke and fanned out by Donalda Walker. Everyone joined in the singing of
happy birthday. Major Raffle Quilt winner was Sue Wren from Berwick. Other raffle winners were Deb Lee, Wendy Norman, Judy Marshall, Kate Johnson, Marg Hore, Marilyn Morrison and Deb Curtis. The organisers would like to thank the following stall holders for their support. Meg and Mog, Rushworth; Catharina’s Vintage Stitches, Kyabram; South Fabrics, Echuca; Brojayla Patches, Boort; Girgarre Green Thumbs Nursery; Girgarre Patchwork Trading Table contributors and Peter Halliday, the Scissor Man. Thanks also go to all the volunteers that helped with the setting up on the Sunday; on the day and with the cleaning up afterwards. The next QUILT IN will be held on the 29 April 2019

SIX REASONS TO VISIT GIRGARRE Girgarre was the featured small town in a recent Saturday Age Newspaper column by Richard Cornish, ‘Six reasons To Visit’. The column is a regular feature promoting small communities. Another feather in the cap of the Development Group publicity people. The Development Group offer a big THANK YOU to Bernie Ryan for preparing a delicious luncheon for Richard to enjoy while he was here. Good food always helps things along.
‘MEALS ON WHEELS’ God is walking through heaven. He comes to the area of heaven where the mice are playing. He asks: "Is everything all right?" The mice say, "yes." He asks: "Is there any way I can make things even better for you?" The mice think about it and say; "Well, you know that heaven is very big and we are very small. It's hard to get places fast." So God thinks about this for a moment and then gives them all roller skates.
Have You Seen This Man? Last sighting was in Station street Girgarre on the day of the Town Garage Sale, often wears a CFA cap and has a great sense of humour. Known to some as ‘Des’ but readily responds to ‘Dale’. (Sorry Dale. We got your name wrong in the last Gazette).
A few weeks later, God is once again visiting the same part of heaven this time where the cats are. He asks them; "How are things for you?" They say; "Purr-fect!" He then asks; "How could I make Heaven better for you?" And they say; "We can't think of anything else just now, Lord, since you sent us Meals on Wheels we are very happy".

TO MARKET, TO MARKET - AND THE FESTIVAL OF WEIRD VEGGIES What could be nicer than an outing to the Girgarre Farmers and Produce Market on a pleasant Sunday morning? Listen to the music and have a great cup of coffee or breakfast in the sun, or explore the amazing variety of fresh fruit, veggies and stalls full of handmade goodies. This month’s first ever Festival of Weird Veggies turned up some super size pumpkins and a few other rather weird and strange looking Veggies. The Comp was organised by Bill Casey and Marg Colman. Loraine Warde judged the entries The winners were - Jan Smith, who won the best dressed item with her display of a variety of vege; the healthiest with her basket of freshly dug potatoes; the strangest, an orange Kumara, plus the longest, a whopping butternut squash of 1.56m. The biggest was won by Bernadette Fitzpatrick and the most colourful by Sandi Dawes. Congratulations to all. Come spring, Green Thumbs Nursery tipster, Carol Ohlin has promised some tips on vege growing with next year’s Festival of Weird Veggies in mind.

GIRGARRE COMMUNITY TO MARKET, TO MARKET MY LITTLE EGG CUPS
Eggs for breakfast? At the Farmers and Growers Market Chook auction.
I do love my little egg cup, His brother much the same, He holds my egg so perfectly; Boiled eggs are not a game. They bounce about for 4 minutes Before they take their test, They need a place to hold them straight; My egg cups are the best. When the soldiers are awaiting, Those buttered friends of mine, I need my little egg cups To keep them all in line. They come with little cosy hats To hide their eggy heads, I take it off and just like that; I take it off and just like that; Prepare for eggy bread! (Karen Hamilton 2016)
GREEN THUMBS NURSERY Carol’s tips -
Waiting for something to happen
Supporting your community car
What an extraordinary Autumn! I hope when you receive this issue you report welcome rain and cooler temperatures. We have been fooled by summer conditions that may rapidly change over the next few weeks. Beautiful unseasonably warm conditions for the April market brought a steady flow of customers keeping our volunteers extremely busy throughout the morning. A sudden cold snap in mid April saw volunteers manning a plant stall at the annual Girgarre Patch Workers “Quiltin” at the Hall in freezing conditions. A delicious piping hot mug of soup at lunch time was greatly appreciated. As mentioned last month tidying of the nursery and cottage garden is currently a priority with plenty of tasks still to be tackled. As we progress Lorraine is sorting our stock. When completed everyone, selves included will find it easier to quickly locate plants they are seeking. This month our specials include named Day Lilies - $4 ea., mixed, Pot Luck jonquils $1 per filled lunch bag per $5 or filled super market bag. With few exceptions other plants sold at the nursery in May will be discounted by 10%. If you are looking for a last minute gift on Mothers Day be sure to check out our ferns, begonias, cyclamen, zygos and succulents. Tip 1. Mow over the leaves covering your lawn, they will break down during winter providing free fertilizer. Alternatively add them to your compost for later use.. John produces very good compost for us. We notice it breaks down more quickly, probably because he regularly turns and aerates it. Tip 2. Perennials can withstand cutting back reasonably hard, if in doubt they will benefit from tip pruning. Hardy shrubs with a tendency for unruly growth may still be trimmed. If unsure plants will handle frost, avoid heavy pruning until early Spring. Free Mothers Day Activity for “Kids” Come along to receive a free succulent and create your own special card for Mum.
