What Do You Look For In A Man?
Letter To Family and Friends of Girlfriends Talk
!
From Founder and Editor- In Chief Janice L. Carter
Aloha everyone! I am back from my vacation, feeling refreshed and full of ideas. Hawaii has to be the closet place to heaven. Peaceful is such an understatement for this place. I hope all is well with everyone and that you enjoyed last month issue of Girlfriends Talk. How do you like that Dr. Feel? It is amazing to me how I have to defend the name “Girlfriends Talk “ to men who won’t even go past the cover just because of the idea of it being a women only magazine. First of all, open your mind up, men should want to know what Girlfriends are talking about, maybe then they can get on the right track as far as dealing with women. (YEAH I SAID IT) When I did the article on Male Menopause, a guy said to me, “what about the women”, and playfully demanded an interview! For what? I didn’t make that up, I researched it. That’s my whole point, men go through things too! Secondly, most of my contributors are men and believe me the women love it. Can I share something with you all? See, most men think they already have things figured out (life, women etc.!) but the truth is as long as the world keeps growing and changing there is always room to learn and obtain a better understanding of everything. I’m not an expert; I can only speak for the things that I have been through. So with the help of others, it’s like engaging in a soul-searching conversation that not only helps ourselves but our readers. REAL PEOPLE, REAL ISSUES, REAL TALK. Continue to support this movement with me, and let’s get back to better days, better ways and happy people!
The word for today is "FAITH." Isn't it amazing how we oftentimes don't see what we imagine in our lives, but live the imagination until it becomes a reality? "FAITH" is that substance that we hope for, but the evidence of what we have yet seen. However, we know in our hearts that it is there, and in due time it will appear. Isn't that great! Just keep Conceiving, Believing and you will begin Achieving. ! !

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, in Boston by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to ! :! of the Haymarket Affair, which it had been observed to commemorate. All U.S. states, the District Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

One-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson has died at age 70. His longtime friend and former publicist Liz Rosenberg told the Associated Press that Ashford — who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits — died Monday in a New York City hospital. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment. Among the songs Ashford & Simpson penned are Ain't No Mountain High Enough, You're All I Need To Get By and Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Last year I touched on the cuddle season, it is only right to talk about Ms. Summer. Who is the total opposite of Mr. Cuddle? Ms. Summer is some what like “The clean up woman “, she up in the cut and every few months or shall I say seasons, she strolls around and whispers in your man’s ear, “ It’s time to play”! Unlike Mr. Cuddle, in the winter he’s in need of heat, in the summer, heat drives him away. Ladies have you ever wondered why it seemed like every summer your man gets antsy and relaxing and being content just seem so hard? Well after a little research I discovered this too isn’t only in our mind (just like the male menopause). Helen Fisher, PhD. and author of “Why We Love “ explains in the summer is the time when you're more apt to try something new, and any novelty increases your body's production of dopamine, which triggers the release of testosterone — two chemicals associated with energy, elation, and sex. Now don’t get me wrong this is not the case for everyone, and it might not pertain to only men either but in this article !Men are exactly who I am talking about. Also don’t think for one moment that I think the summer time is the only time cheating occurs. It just seems that the summer makes cheating more daring and exciting for a man. I’m not making this stuff up. I researched and experienced it. So ladies take notice of your mates pattern and if you are experiencing this type of behavior, speak up because if you let him get away with a summer fling he will feel more confident about doing it again next year. And eventually his summer affairs will take their toll on your marriage or relationship. Sadly, many women don’t find out about their husband or boyfriend’s summer affair until it’s too late.
!

!
The 3 Types of Men Who Typically Have Summer Affairs I found that there are 3 types of men who tend to have summer affairs. The recreational cheater - this man treats infidelity like a summer sport. The seasonal cheater - this man will indulge in a summer fling if his wife or girlfriend is away on vacation. The opportunistic cheater - this man only cheats when an opportunity presents itself for him to cheat without getting caught. Why Men Cheat More During the Summer Months All three types of cheating men (and the types may overlap) consider summer the ideal time to have a fling or short-term extramarital affair. The interesting thing about these summer cheats is that under normal circumstances they would never even consider cheating on their wives of girlfriends at other times of the year. But vacations, weekend trips and all the outdoor activities that take place during the summer months make it easy for cheating men to hide their summer affairs. Most summer cheaters never get caught. 2 Reasons You Should Never Ignore a Summer Fling You may be tempted to just ignore his summer fling. But that could be a big mistake. Here’s why: " If he gets away with his summer fling, he’ll feel confident enough to have another one next year, and the year after, and summer flings will become a way of life for him. Do you want to go through the same thing every year? " Not every summer fling dies a natural death when summer ends. Some summer flings go on to become long-term affairs. It could mean the end of your relationship. If you’re married, it could mean a separation or divorce. Are you willing to take that chance? What to Do About Summer Infidelity If you don’t want to become a victim of summer infidelity, learn how to spot the signs of a summer fling. Put a few simple checks and balances in place to make sure he won’t have an opportunity to get involved in a summer affair. Familiarize yourself with some of the tactics cheating men use to hide their summer affairs.

Keeping It Real With Dr. Feel
Love Locked Down
YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER!!
Dear Dr. Feel: I am ending a 5yr. sentence in less than 60 days. About 6 months ago, I received a letter from my girl. She told me, that she had just given birth to a healthy 7lb. baby boy. Of course, there was no way the baby was mine, and she didn't even come at me that way. As a matter of fact, she kept it one hundred with me. She said, that about 2 years after I had been away, she had gotten involved with a guy she met. It was someone that I didn't know, and he didn't know me. It was only a short affair, and they no longer have any involvement. Since then, she has repeatedly cried and begged me over the phone, not to leave her when I come home. I have always wanted us to be together, and she was the only girl that I ever imagined would be the mother of “MY child. Now, I'm not so sure. What should I do, and how should I feel? ...Keep it Real... Dear you are Not the Father: Sounds to me my man, that you are going to need a Heart check...That One Way! I mean if you really want to keep it real, then you know that your actions that caused you to get locked up in the first place are what created the opportunity for her infidelity. She was obviously reaching out to someone to fulfill the emptiness that you had left in her. If you want to be with her for real, then you have to be man enough to admit the part you played. Also, you'll have to be man enough to forgive her, disregard what your homies will say and be man enough to be a father to her son as well. Remember, being a father is more than just planting a seed...And yes, you still can be the father...Just Keepin It Real. If you want to know The Real, send your questions to Keepin It Real with Dr. Feel @GFTM...........

What Do Your Eyes Desire? Imagine meeting a man such as Idris Elba. Tall, dark, sexy as ever, with a demeanor that will melt your soul. Picture the look on envious women faces if they saw you out on a date or just the mere thought of waking up to him every morning. I chose Idris Elba as an example because of the response women make whenever he is on the screen. There are everyday non -celebrity men who are just as fine. I wanted to give you an immediate idea of what I am speaking on. When we see a guy, the first thing we check out is his clothes and shoes. His appearance will determine if we would even hold a conversation with them. Next, his pick up line, which will determine how long the conversation, will last. Even going through an entire checklist of things before hand, nothing can really prepare or warn you of a delayed personality. Truth is you can go a lifetime without ever really completely knowing a person. Just because he look good doesn’t mean he is good. Take the time to speak to a man, get to know his background, just so you will know where he is coming from and his plans on where he is going. So I ask you !all “What do you look for in a man”?
Sheila Jones -None, just wait on GOD to send the right one to you. Marquita Curry- in reference to him his intellect. If a man knows more then sports and can speak informatively about things that matters and the morale to back it I’m all ears lol Melinda Jones –Eyes- They have to project warmth and honesty and dance with laughter or I’ll walk immediately. Lisa Clark – Personailty and smile.
Lisa Maxwell – A man in uniform.

Can you say breath of fresh air? I can and it sounds like this "Boss Lady"! , I haven't known her very long, I haven't even spent a lot of time with her but there is something truly genuine about this young lady. I get such a comfortable sincere vibe when I am in her presence and that is so refreshing. I can honestly say you don't meet too many good people now -a -days. What I like most about Liz " Boss Lady" Walton is she appears to be a bubbly friendly type person and that’s all good but 'Boss Lady' is just that for a reason, she's not asking or demanding respect but indeed by all means "TAKING IT". She is a woman on the grind and rise ,she do not bite her tongue for anybody in fact has an open forum for anyone who desires to address her about anything. Boss Lady is definitely what the industry is missing, her big heart, hard work and determination is selfless, she supports everyone trying to accomplish their mission, she want to see everyone succeed. A woman not afraid to follow her dream as she is constantly thinking of creative ways to make her mark in the industry. She want to help other women achieve their goals the right way, the positive way .She feels like women get taken advantage of in this field because people don’t expect for them to know their stuff. Although she is taking the harder road she wants to show the up and coming females the smoother path. That’s why she is creating Bosses Beauties – Which will help girls to get started in promotions and build portfolios. Bosses Beauties will be broken down into two sections - promotion and entertainment Classy women please apply. How you can repay her!just shout her out !

As we are gearing up for the Celebrity Fashion Affair, I had the pleasure of meeting some of the participants of the show. I first met with up and coming fashion designers Amber of ( Anic Didem) and Akili of ( Jahi) . The two cousins come from a family of seamstress. Amber 24 years of age, developed her passion for fashion while in high school, feeling the rut of shopping for larger size clothes, she decided to design her very own prom dress. This self -taught sewer took off from there. Creating Anic Didem a line developed for curvy women, sizes 10-24. For the Celebrity Fashion Affair, Amber will display her Urban Safari wear, she says expect to see a lot of Prints, Black and white. That will be her main focus of the night. I can't wait to see her do her thing. When ask if Ambers design consist of any limitation, she response was, not to her because she will do what she wants to do but to the industry people it does set limitations because larger women are still trying to break down walls, the industry has a certain view on how they think larger women should look, very well because a lot of them feel as if larger women are not beautiful. Amber shares that dressing the proper way enhances the beauty of a curvy woman. When asked about her future goals Amber says she is praying for big things, she hopes to see herself building up her career and someday being apart of New York Fashion Week and traveling the world. Akili all of 18 years old, yes that's right, 18 and I stressed that because at this age how many 18 years old know exactly what they want to do for a living? Well Akili has known since he was in the 6th grade that he wanted to be a fashion designer. Akili of Jahi design of clothing is more formal wear designed for sizes 2 -10. You can expect to see a lot of dark, fall like colors and sheer, sounds interesting. What is attractive to an 18 year old? Sexy is depending on the person and how they carry themselves what and how they wear their clothing. He has an ideal woman in his head when he designs. He is also inspired by high heel shoes. Akili feel american designers are more wearable, basic day to day, versus over sea Christian Dior, Versace , and that’s where he would like to see himself one day. Both admits it is very stressful preparing for a fashion show. The shorter the time frame the more stressed out you will be. Akili says you have to have it under control because it will make people not want to work with you. Akili is on his 11th fashion show and to be honest I can't see him being stressed he is so cool! he is so young! I have to admit after I was looked at his work I was truly impressed far beyond my expectation. A Jahi dress won 2nd Place at The Links Twin Rivers "Touching Tomorrow Today" art competition ACPA's 2010 WinterFest a Jahi Dress was given a Honorable Mention jahi.style@yahoo.com http://jahi-style.blogspot.com http://facebook.com/amber.n.toles Good luck to both these young go getters! !

Bithiah has always wanted to be a model, so the Celebrity Fashion Affair is the perfect place to show case her talents. When asked was there a limit to what she will rock she said she wants to be respectful for the younger peers. Bithiah is confident in anything she puts on, she also admits being content with her flaws and all. She states it is easy to be intimidated by others, but she is confident in her self, her focus has to be on what her and what she is trying to accomplish. Her message to young girls "Keep It Classy" far to often women are judged by the way they look. Always, take a look in the mirror. Bithiah will hopefully be appearing on American Top Model. We wish her the best of luck and all the success in the world.

Yung Sav and Young Caution. These two guys were very humble. They have been doing their thing for awhile now but both admit it is pretty hard to get the respect and recognition due to mostly shady people in the game with the upper hand. Yung Sav says if he ever makes it he will change the game up a lot and he would pay people to open up for his shows. Young Caution says Detroit has a radio station that caters to local music and the radio personalities support the show and all but still he has to give love to Ohio underground music for the love they shown him. !

Advice from the Boss Lady , "don't sign your life away to nobody because if they can't put you in a better position or offer you something that you can already do your self ,there is no point in signing with them. Having a camp and you see they are grinding and pushing thatʼs a good thing . You just make sure everything is straight". Did You Know? Willie Thrower (March 22, 1930-February 20, 2002) was a professional American football player. Born near Pittsburgh in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, he was the first African American player to appear in a "modern-era" (Post World War II) professional game at the quarterback position in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears in 1953. He played college football at Michigan State University, where he led the Spartans football team to a national championship in 1952. Although Thrower was not drafted in 1953, he was offered one year contract with the Chicago Bears.
Willie Thrower
Thrower appeared in one game for the Chicago Bears against the San Francisco 49ers on October 18, 1953. In that game, Thrower completed 3 out of 5 passes for 27 yards, and had one interception. The Bears released Thrower after the 1953 season. Contrary to what was published in the popular press, Thrower did not play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers or the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League.1 He probably played with one of the many semi-pro teams in the Toronto and central Ontario region (these teams, though seldom remembered, were seen as a farm league for both the CFL and NFL) until a separated shoulder forced him to retire at age 27. After his retirement from football he became a social worker in New York City. In the late 1960s Willie worked as a child care counselor at the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School (a residential treatment center) in Westchester County, New York
!
He died of a heart attack in New Kensington on February 20, 2002, at the age of 71. In 2006, a statue of Thrower was erected near Valley High School in New Kensington to honor his accomplishments. The statue was unveiled during a Valley High School football game in September attended by Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney as well as Thrower's family. Willie Thrower was also mentioned by former NFL quarterback Warren Moon in his Pro Football Hall of Fame acceptance speech. Moon thanked Thrower, among others, for giving him inspiration during a time when few African-Americans played the quarterback position >;! in the NFL.

“Girls on the Grind” By Latika Larry “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again!” This mantra is embedded into our brains from early childhood and is still relevant in our every day adult life as well. This mantra is steadfast in the brains of two women here in Columbus by the names of Latika Larry and Shaundretta Boykins-they are the poster children for this timeless saying! These friends, sorority sisters, and business partners have always desired to promote independence and entrepreneurship, so they started out with one venture, “On Black Street,” which encouraged minorities to support our local small, black business owners. Though it had a nice run it didn’t flourish into what they had anticipated. Never to be wavered, these women kept going-they wanted to somehow still support small business owners and help out women who had an entrepreneurial spirit but needed some guidance, simultaneously getting together with some of the women they had met during their journey as business owners, at church, networking events, etc. So they decided to host a vision board party called “Girls on the Grind” in January 2011, to help get the women on track for the new year and to socialize in a positive environment; 7 women attended this event but a strong connection was definitely formed-the stories that came out while creating these boards were amazingstories of triumph, and hope, and admiration; all of the stories encouraged and brought every one present closer. From that day forward, they decided to meet once a month to check up on each other and support each other. From there they were affectionately called by the ladies at the meetings “Girls on the Grind;” the name stuck, and here they are! From those 7 ladies in January they have expanded to a list serve of over 100 women and an active group of around 40-50 women, and are continuously garnering interest, even from women outside of the state of Ohio! The mission of Girls on the Grind states that the group “was formed to provide a positive and empowering outlet for women to come and share their thoughts and aspirations with like-minded individuals. It is open to women of all races and creeds who desire to be a part of an empowering movement, used to both encourage and embrace the dreams of both the small business owner and the everyday woman. It serves to provide camaraderie, support, love, growth, strength, and sisterhood to women in need of these things. We not only promote maturity, both spiritually and financially, but we will provide the tools to accomplish these goals, in both life and business. We uphold these practices amongst each other and in service to our community.” It is sometimes impossible to find a positive group of women-we are always perceived as being catty or “haters,” but this group goes against this stereotype wholeheartedly, supporting every single member of the group, promoting sisterhood and professionalism and they get along great! The meetings are uplifting and fun, but most of all empowering! They had a visitor come to a meeting just last week, and this is how she felt when she was contacted shortly after the meeting via Facebook: “I'm so glad you contacted me because I got a testimony...I want y'all to know that what you’re doing is not in vain....I had been battling with myself for the last couple weeks about what I'm going to do with my life, staying at home depressed, not watching tv, nothing, barely could drag myself to work...but last night after the meeting around 3:45am I had an epiphany....I know this might sound crazy but I found my purpose....I know what GOD wants me to do....I went to church this morning and the sermon was about GOD’S purpose for us....which gave me confirmation....so I want to thank y'all so much for what you’re doing and to let u know y'all are making a difference in people’s lives!” This is just a testament to the work that these ladies are doing and the affect that this group is having on people both in the city and outside of it-they get messages on Facebook frequently, inquiring on how to start up a group in their city-they’re making moves!!! They are ecstatic about their progress and have huge plans for the group, including becoming a non-profit in the future and to expand to outside cities, with serious interest in Cleveland, Toledo, and Detroit, among other cities! They recently partnered up with the “I’m Every Woman Expo” that was held at the Columbus Convention Center and received rave reviews and a warm welcome, garnering a lot of membership interest there as well! If you are interested in joining the group or would like more information please ! contact them at girlsonthegrind@gmail.com and check out the website at www.girlsonthegrind.org. >=!

I recently had the pleasure of attending two exciting events Mocha Soul and The Farmers Market. I absolutely enjoyed myself and it was a great look for Girlfriends Talk. Thanks to Dee Townsel, Donnell Hughes and Al Edmondson for inviting me to be apart of these great events. These are the things that allow Girlfriends Talk to grow. I met so many new people, even learned how to line dance. I am very grateful for these opportunities to support and be supported.

How to Achieve Any Goal Do you have unmet goals? You aren't alone. In fact, many people live with unfulfilled aspirations and the selfhelp industry is booming. Unfortunately, many widely used self-help techniques fail to deliver results. Case in point: You've probably heard of the "Yale Goal Study" in which researchers were said to have interviewed the graduating Yale seniors in 1953, asking whether or not the students had written down specific goals that they wanted to achieve. Then twenty years down the road the researchers looked up each student and discovered that the 3% of the class who had written down their goals had accumulated more personal wealth than the other 97% combined. Very compelling story, but complete fiction. The "Yale Goal Study" never happened, though motivational speakers and self-help books have quoted it for years. Best selling author and psychologist Richard Wiseman went on a mission to craft a no-nonsense response to the bogus self-help techniques. Using a diverse range of scientific data he uncovered a proven approach to achieve any goal. The following 5 successful techniques (Do This) and 5 unsuccessful techniques (Not That) are from Wiseman's book; 59 Seconds Change Your Life in Under a Minute. Do This: Make a Step-by-Step Plan. If you are serious about achieving your goal, then you need to create a step-by-step plan on how to do it. Successful goal-achievers break down their overall goal into sub-goals. Each sub-goal needs to be concrete, measurable and time-based. •
Not That: Motivate yourself by focusing on someone that you admire. Studies show that focusing on someone you admire is not a strong enough motivator to see you through your goal.
Do This: Tell Other People About Your Goal. How badly do you want to achieve your goal? If you want it bad enough, you'll tell your friends and family. This technique works on two levels. First, you've put yourself on the spot by letting the world in on your goal, so it's all-eyes-on-you. Failure would be public. Second, your friends and family are there to offer support and encouragement. Don't underestimate the psychological power of having someone in your corner. • Not That: Think about the bad things. When you focus on the negative it becomes your reality. Do This: Focus on the Good Things When Achieving Your Goal. Remind yourself of the benefits associated with achieving your goal. Make a checklist of how life will be better once you have achieved your aim. This gets your focus on a positive future, one that's worth the effort. • Not That: Try to suppress unhelpful thoughts. Rather than trying to erase that image of chocolate cake from your mind, learn to deal with the reality of temptation head-on. Do This: Reward Your Progress. Studies show that attaching rewards to each of your sub-goals encourages success. Your rewards should never conflict with your major goal. When aiming to lose weight, never use food as a reward. • Not That: Rely on willpower. Willpower alone rarely gets anyone to their goal. Do This: Record Your Progress. Make your plans, progress, benefits and rewards concrete by expressing them in writing. Use a hand-written journal, your computer or a bulletin board to chart your progress. This process is priceless for maintaining motivation. • Not That: Fantasize about life after achieving your goal. Daydreaming is fun, but simply fantasizing about your new life will not make it a reality. Are you ready to achieve your fitness and weight loss goal once and for all? Girlfriends Talk Magazine It’s about Sense and Science, or Rational Astro ! ENERGY ARIES-Just thinking about the energy of the ram wears out most people. But they’re also capable of being calm, wise, and serious when they choose. Unfortunately, they usually don’t choose until their mellowed out with maturity (older). TAURUS-Like Gibraltar, they are solid and steady and nothing disturbs their tranquility. You can throw water on them or light a fire between their toes. You can shout at the top of your lungs but Taurus won’t budge a bit until they’re ready. GEMINI-A Gemini person will sometimes appear to light near you, like an inquisitive bird, survey the scene with excited curiosity, then dart of in a different direction almost before you can even say Hello. CANCER-A Cancer person reserves energy until they absolutely need it. Cancers never come forth directly either. First they may move backwards a few paces. Then they move sideways, suddenly without warning, the crawl to the other side. LEO-Ordinarily, their movements and speech are deliberate. Leo’s seldom talk fast, run, or even walk quickly. The energy of a Leo depends on the type of audience or the type of celebration their involved with. Leo’s they walk straight and proud with the smooth glide of a cat. VIRGO-Virgos are incapable of sitting still for very long. After a while, they’ll become visibly restless and pace the floor or change chairs like a jumping jack, and project a vague sense of urgency as if their late for another appointment somewhere. LIBRA-They work like a mule in a harness, keeping balance, steady, and pace as they harmoniously plan their chores with efficiency. Suddenly, they’ll plop down into a chair, say, “I’m bushed,” and give the best imitation of laziness you’ve ever seen. SCORPIO-There will rarely be any jumping, sudden starts or nervous mannerisms with a Scorpio. They’ll never flinch with embarrassment or swell with pride. Reaction is always kept at a bare minimum, because Scorpio’s art is to probe your nature and motives. SAGITTARIUS-Normally they are restless. They hate to sit or stand still. They walk as if their really going somewhere. There’s no halting or hesitating. The typical Sagittarian is attracted to danger in sports and in their jobs and hobbies. An Element of risk excites them. CAPRICORN-While the happy, laughing extroverts scatter their energies here and there. Capricorns never deviate or move an inch to the left or right. They steadily follow the upward path, with inbred faith in doing things the usual, reliable way, no short cuts. AQUARIUS-You’ll rarely find the Aquarian fighting fiercely for a cause. They live their code, and feel that’s enough. They’re too busy figuring out the reason for the revolution, listening to the people’s troubles and sharing sympathetic understanding. PISCES-You’ll be impressed with the Pisces charm and lazy good nature. They don’t care about most ! #?! limitations or restrictions. They’re even more indifferent to insults, recriminations, and other people’s bristling opinions if they don’t rob them of their freedom to dream.
