elcome to this edition of gir(L). It’s summer, summer, summer time, time to sit back and unwind. The intense summer heat of the tropics is back and the best we can do is embrace it. Afterall, the tourists are gone, restaurants are easier to get into and beach parking is available! It’s the best time of year for all of us natives, so enjoy it. You know, we started this publication in June of 2005. 13 years ago, can you believe it? In that time we’ve seen plenty of publications come and go but the one thing I’ve learned through it all...you must adapt. I’ve made our website a major part of this publication, not to mention the phone app. I love bringing you great information you can use in your daily lives, afterall our sexuality is just one part of our total being. We put our pants on the same way everyone else does. I do hope you’ve learned some cool things by being a regular reader of gir(L).

WHO WAS THE REAL “ROSIE THE RIVETER?” By Shelly Allen

A

fter the United States joined the war in 1941, the government called on women to join the workforce. 6,000,000 women answered that call. From 1940 to 1945 the female demographic of workers increased from 27 to 37 percent and 50 percent of those went for jobs in the defense industries. The aircraft industry was made up of an astonighing 65 percent of women by 1943. In 1942, the Westinghouse Power Company commissioned J. Howard Miller to create a promotional poster that would boost morale among it’s employees. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the poster would find itself in the midst of the feminist movement. The poster’s powerful image would be adopted by feminists everywhere and because the poster lacked a copyright could be widely distributed. People began to wonder, was this a real woman? It didn’t take long for someone to step forward and claim she was that woman. Geraldine Hoff Doyle, who worked in a factory in Michigan, believed she saw herself in an uncaptioned reprint of a photo depicting Miller’s muse. It would take 30 years and dedication from one Seton Hall University professor to set the record straight. In 2015, after six years of research, professor James J Kimble knocked on Naomi Parker Fraley’s door. In 1942,

it seems the 20-year-old, California waitress-turned-factory worker posed for a photograph while wearing her signature red-and-white-polka-dot bandana and working on a turret lath at a Naval Air Station. She and her younger sister Ada drilled and patched airplane wings as well as operated rivet machines. As the pictures circulated nationwide it was then that J. Howard Miller saw them and used Fraley’s likeness as the inspiration for his 1942, “We Can Do It!” poster. For 30 years Fraley was unaware of her likeness on the poster until she was told the photo had been misidentified. Fraley told People in 2015, “I couldn’t believe it because it was me in the photo, but there was somebody else’s name in the caption: Geraldine. I was amazed.” It was too late to set the record straight as Geraldine had been cemented as the real Rosie. “I just wanted my own identity. I didn’t want fame or fortune, but I did want my own identity,” Fraley recalled. Naomi Parker Fraley passed peacefully in January of this year, she was 96 years old. The icon of the women’s movement of the 1980’s and eternal symbol of women’s empowerment said, “The women of this country these days need some icons. If they think I’m one, I’m happy about that.”

YELLOW CAB OF BROWARD

A COMPANY YOU CAN TRUST

“We are not your grandparents ride anymore”

S

ince its inception, Yellow Cab of Broward has always been an innovator in the taxi cab industry. We began by having the first wheelchair accessible vehicle in 1967, and continued by having the first computer aided dispatch in 1986. We were the first to use GPS technology to send the closest car to pick up passengers in 2002. Additionally, Yellow Cab was the first in the state to install cameras in our vehicles, and in August 2017 launched the “No More Meters/Guaranteed pricing initiative. “We have always been on the cutting edge of the taxi industry,” said John Camillo, Yellow Cab of Broward’s president and CEO. And now we’re the first to use smart tablet technology to provide passengers with their fare in advance.” Yellow Cab’s goal is to accommodate and serve our customers by offering a guaranteed rate, because we knew it would resonate with the public. We wanted to eliminate the level of unknown and anxiety, by providing guaranteed pricing. Fares are calculated based on google maps using the most direct route to one’s destination and are consistent as they are mandated by the Department of Weights and Measures. There is no surge pricing at Yellow Cab of Broward like Uber and Lyft, regardless of business volume. Through innovative technology, booking a cab is very simple via our mobile app “Ride Yellow”, online fare calculator, street hail option, or our 24/7 call center. “Who are you riding with?” Safety is one of Yellow Cab’s priorities when

considering our passengers, especially women. Security is a major factor that many people think about when getting into a vehicle with a person they do not know, in hopes that their driver will take them to their destination safely. Women value their safety the most, in a world where their vulnerability has been heightened due to recent sexual harassment allegations and incidents of sexual assault amongst many other methods of transportation and ridesharing companies. We want to ensure that every single passenger feels safe when riding in one of our cars. Therefore, all our drivers are required to go through a background check and fingerprint screening from the FBI; something that is not required from other methods of ground transportation, we have marked identifiable vehicles, cameras in all our vehicles, and have a 24/hour call center in the event that you leave any personal belongings in one of our cars; all making us the safer option. “Ride Safe. Ride Convenient. Ride Yellow.” Yellow Cab of Broward is a company you can trust. Our company is local, has been operating for 57 years, and are all about how to best serve our community. Our mission is to provide every passenger with the best quality of service and utmost level of safety and security. We welcome you to try us out and we will ensure that women, and all passengers of every kind feel safe when riding with us.

South Florida Summer Why I Love It

By Shelly Allen

“Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, but I know it’s nobody’s fault.”

June- December 2018 I 47

I

s there any better place to be in the summer than South Florida? Oh sure it’s hot and humid, sticky and sultry, but when all the tourists have gone, the pace slows, the traffic calms, and a seat in our favorite spots are suddenly much easier to come by, it reminds us why we moved to paradise in the first place. If you want hustle and bustle all year round move to New York or LA or any other big city in this country, as for me I’m staying right here. I love South Florida summers. South Florida summers are for relaxing with an ice cold drink in one hand and sun screen in the other. Your feet resting softly at the edge of the ocean as the waves lap over your legs and the scent of salty air saunters through your nose and fills your lungs. South Florida summers are so relaxing even the ocean takes a minute to unwind. The waves no longer crash in the surf, it’s almost as though they glide into shore then gently recede back to where once they came. It’s the best time of year for boaters as the waters’ glass surface reflects back as you gaze into the horizon.

South Florida summers are for visiting all your favorite hangouts and enjoying all your favorite activities. As South Floridians we know the value of sunscreen, protective clothing and a lot of water to keep our skin from searing and our bodies dehydrated as we kayak, bicycle, scoot, jet ski, swim, lay at the beach, or stroll down one of the many quaint and inviting streets like: Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach, Lake Ave in Lake Worth, or Las Olas Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. There is so much to do in a South Florida summer and so many less people to hinder us as we do it. Is it just me or do the people seem more friendly during the heat of our South Florida summers? Maybe we are all just too damned hot to be bothered with petty arguments or maybe it’s because we have reclaimed our slice of paradise for just a few short months. South Florida summers are a lot of things to a lot of people but to me, with a classic Jimmy Buffet song playing in the background and a nice cold beer, South Florida in the summer is nothing less than paradise.

How’s YOUR Digestion?

lson M. Haas, M.D., one of the nations leading experts in the field of natural health and the author of Staying Healthy with Nutrition, tells us that digestive tract health is one of the core components of overall wellbeing.

The body is a cauldron of chemical reactions, and each such reaction requires the services of an enzyme. In the natural products world, enzymes have become known as little facilitators of digestion, breaking down nutrients into their usable parts. Very specific in nature, each enzyme acts on a specific type of chemical, called a substrate, in what is commonly referred to as a lock-andkey relationship-the enzyme’s shape fits only its intended substrate. This is why people with insufficient production of the enzyme lactase struggle to breakdown lactose after ingesting dairy products. By nature, many of the foods we eat contain the enzymes necessary to digest that food. However, many variables, such as heating, can deplete these foodborne enzymes. It is best to consume natural foods that are either raw or minimally heated to preserve foodborne enzymes. Also, while the body makes its own menu of enzymes, this production can be negatively affected by aging and other health factors. Supplementation has become one favored method of ensuring the proper enzyme

mix in the body. Adding a quality digestive enzyme supplement has many benefits, however, there is no substitute for natural enzymes contained in raw healthy food. Digestive enzymes have been found to be useful for: • Those under stress • Those who use antacids, as antacids can decrease enzyme effectiveness and secretion • Those who eat fried, grilled, or baked foods as these methods of preparation destroy naturally occurring enzyme activity • Those with teeth or jaw problems, as improper chewing of food decreases enzyme secretion • People with deficient digestive enzymes due to illness or aging.

CLOCK OF TIME

By Napoleon Hill

The hands of the Clock of Time are moving swiftly onward! We cry out, “Backward, turn backward O Time in your flight,” but Time does not heed your cries. It is later than you think! Arouse yourself, fellow wayfarer; awake and take possession of your own mind while you still have enough Time to become, during the yet unexpired future, that which you would have liked to have been in the past. Make the most of your present allotment of Time, with the hope that you will not have to reincarnate in order to do the job all over again because of neglect. You have been warned! Now the responsibility is YOURS. There is a simple test by which you may judge whether or not you have been using your Time to best advantage. If you have attained peace of mind and material opulence sufficient for your needs, your Time has been properly used. If you have not attained these blessings, your Time has not been properly used, and you should begin now to search for the circumstances in connection with which you have fallen short. The truly great people have no such

reality as “idle time,” because they keep their minds geared eternally to patterns of constructive thought. By this profound use of their Time, they develop an alert sixth sense through which they look, listen, and see from within. If negative thoughts stray into the minds of the truly great, these thoughts are immediately transmuted into positive thoughts and exercised by positive physical action appropriate to their nature. Tick, tick, tick - the pendulum of the Clock of Time is swinging rapidly! The entire face of civilization is undergoing an uplifting operation. Mr. Right and Mr. Wrong are engaged in mortal combat for supremacy. The Time has come for everyone to stand up and be counted. The use each of us makes of his individual allotment of Time will tell whose side each of us is on - Mr. Right’s or Mr. Wrong’s. Something has speeded up the Clock of Time so rapidly that the last half of the twentieth century will reveal to mankind more individual opportunities for selfimprovement that have been revealed during the entire past of man’s existence. Your share of these vast OPPORTUNITIES may be embraced and used only by the way you relate yourself to TIME! Source: You Can Work Your Own Miracles. Fawcett Columbine Book. 1971. Pgs. 119 & 120.
