Daisy Summer Fun!
A word from the CEO
Wendy DordelHi, Daisy Girl Scouts!
Welcome to Daisy Girl Scouts!
There is nothing that shines quite like the excitement on a Daisy’s face as she heads through her first year in Girl Scouting. From forming those new friendships, to putting that first petal on her vest, a Daisy Girl Scout is full of energy and excitement as she begins her Girl Scout journey!
As a Daisy Girl Scout, your girl will have the opportunity to make new friends, attend our many council programs and events, explore nature through outdoor activities, make a difference in her community, learn new life skills, and have FUN!
Throughout her year as a Daisy, she will learn the Girl Scout Law earning petals along the way. She will learn the importance of being honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, responsible for what she says and does, respectful of herself and others, respectful of authority, and wise in her use of resources; all while making the world a better place and being a sister to every Girl Scout! She will also gain the confidence to try new things, discover new talents, and most importantly, be herself!
Your Daisy’s year will be one of excitement and wonder. You can stay involved in your Daisy’s journey by participating in troop activities and staying connected with local programs and events through our monthly Council email newsletter “Gateway Connect.”
The programs in this guide are open to all Daisies. Please consider having your Daisy attend at least one in her area, regardless of whether her troop plans to participate. Attending programs is a great way to maximize your Daisy’s Girl Scout experience and make new Girl Scout friends.
Wishing you and your Daisy a wonderful year to come!

• Pour some paint on the paper plate

Lemon Prints
Lemons and Batteries
Materials
• Lemons
• Galvanized nail (coated in zinc)
• Copper wire or a penny
• Alligator clips
• Small LED bulb
Steps
• Roll the lemon on a hard surface. This will release some of the juices that will get this battery going.
• Stick the nail and the penny in the lemon. An adult may need to cut a small slit in the lemon for the penny. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
• You may have noticed that batteries have positive (+) and negative (-) ends. On the lemon battery the copper is positive and the nail is negative.
• Touch the copper and zinc with the same hand. What do you notice as you complete this circuit?
• You can take this experiment to the next level by turning a few more lemons into batteries. Two to four lemons should have enough juice to power up a small LED bulb. Connect the lemons with the alligator clips – each clip should attach a nail to a penny. You should have two loose clips at the end to connect to the LED bulb. Attach these clips to the bulb and watch what happens!
• The lemons aren’t creating energy on their own but are a part of the battery. The citric acid in the lemon is perfect for electrons (small particles) to flow through. The zinc from the nail oxidizes in the citric acid, releases electrons. These electrons flow when a circuit is completed.
Reflection Questions
• What other fruits or vegetables can you use besides lemons? Try this experiment with a potato or apple and see if you can create a similar reaction.
*Activity requires supervision and assistance from an adult.
Watercolor Science!
Materials
• Lemon
• Liquid watercolors
• Watercolor (or cardstock) paper
• Thick Paintbrush
Steps
• Paint your paper with watercolors. Make sure the paper is saturated with color and is wet.
• While the paper is still wet, squeeze on the lemon juice.
• You should be able to see an instantaneous reaction.
Reflection Questions
• What happens to the watercolors when the lemon juice is applied?
• If you are using an orange liquid watercolor, what happens to the color when it comes in contact with the lemon juice?
*Activity requires supervision and assistance from an adult.
