Honor Pin The Honor Pin is awarded to Girl Scout adults who have given devoted, dedicated service to two or more geographic units or program delivery audiences. The service performed is outstanding, beyond the expectation of the position held. Chris Alfred has served as Manager for the Cloverleaf Service Unit and has also taken on the WOGS Service Unit. She leads multiple troops and coordinates monthly Service Unit activities that are a huge hit with the girls. Chris’ strength of character and commitment to the Girl Scout vision benefits the girls with whom she works, the adults she supports, and her community at large. Toiria Baker serves as Manager for Bridging Trails Service Unit #640. She is also a Delegate and a Council Trainer who has helped to increase the level of training in her area. Toiria sets a high bar for a variety of Service Unit events and is constantly improving and growing the program for girls in not only her area but other Service Units as well.
Alisia “Ally” Eckert is a quick thinker and creative manager for the Service Unit #267 team and nearby service units as well. Besides providing a well-rounded program for girls, she has previously served on the “Be Brilliant” product sale team and is back on the council sales team again! As a Regional Volunteer for our Council, Alisia is an inspiration to the service units and their girls who experience her incredible work ethic and enthusiasm. Veronica Pradelski applies her Macy historian training to the South Holland Service Unit. She has shared her knowledge, created exhibits, and preserved important pieces of Girl Scout history for the girls in her area to enjoy for many years to come. Veronica has also served as Service Unit Manager and as a National Delegate. Shannon Schwarzwalder, as Service Unit Manager for the Naperville Area Older Girls, successfully gets Junior Troop girls and adults to say “yes!” to continuing in scouting during junior high and beyond. Shannon’s incredible organizational skills make resources for event planning available to everyone, her mentoring supports older girl troops throughout the Council, and her leadership means that the “cool” things older scouts get to do – like taking adventure trips to Colorado – keep girls of all ages looking forward to their teen years in scouting.
The Year 1912 January 6, 1912 New Mexico became the 47th U.S. State.

Thanks Badge The Thanks Badge is reserved for adult members whose performance is truly outstanding and benefits the total council or the entire Girl Scout Movement. It honors members whose service is so significantly above and beyond the call of duty, that no other award would be appropriate. Donna-Marie Advani has been working with older girls for most of her 28 years in scouting. As a Trainer, she excels at guiding adult volunteers through the transition from leader to advisor. As a Registration Ambassador and part of the Gold Award Committee, Donna-Marie encourages girls to develop as successful leaders and to know that they always have a place in scouting. Judie Ballanco, like many volunteers, has continued to serve beyond her daughters’ years in scouting. She has been
Service Unit Manager and Registrar for the Munster Mints in Indiana. For the last five years, Julie has worked with the food planning and preparation for the Day Camp program as well as the Service Unit Fun Fair and International Fest.
Tom Courtney first registered as an adult volunteer because his fiancée, Rosemarie, was a troop leader. Little did he
know that over the next 47 years he would work in Public Relations, Finance, as a Trainer, as a Historian, and as a First Aid Trainer! Tom strongly supports the religious award programs for girls, and is an outstanding role model for other men who volunteer with Girl Scouting.
Tina Melendez works with not one, but two, service units. She is a Leader, a Trainer, a You & Me volunteer, and a Day
and Resident Camp volunteer. She has started many new troops, trained and mentored new leaders, and provided opportunities for girls that they might not otherwise be aware existed. In the words of one of her girls, Tina is “really what all the adults involved in Girl Scouts should be about.”
Lisa Minella has expertise that reaches not just the girls in Duneland Service Unit #318, not just the adult volunteers she trains locally and nationally, but all the way to England and Italy where she started new troops and served as a National Operational Volunteer. Lisa truly has influenced the Girl Scouting movement worldwide!
Thanks Badge II The Thanks Badge II is reserved for adult members, having previously earned the Thanks Badge, whose performance continues to be truly outstanding and benefits the total council or the entire Girl Scout Movement. It honors members whose service is so significantly above and beyond the call of duty, that no other award would be appropriate.
Sheri Lambert Sheri has served in a variety of troop, membership, service unit, and Council positions over the last 17 years. She received the Thanks Badge in 2007 and has continued to work as an outstanding Service Unit Manager, a Council Trainer, a Product Program volunteer, and a Council District Delegate. The North Elmhurst are is growing and thriving under Sheri’s superb guidance!

Hall of Fame The Hall of Fame Award is awarded to an adult who has been an adult member for at least 25 years, who has delivered service that far exceeds the expectation of any position that has had a lasting impact on the Girl Scout organization or her/his community. Linda Hanson Beach has been a Girl Scout for over
Marie Marino has been a Girl Scout leader for over 50
half a century, getting her start as a Brownie in New Jersey and continuing as a scout when she attended Valparaiso University. She has been a troop Leader, Gold Award Advisor, Day Camp Director, Council Delegate, and the driving force behind uniform exchanges, parade participation, and healthy lifestyle choices for girls. Linda continues to be a wealth of information and support for both the girls and the adult volunteers in her area.
golden years, and she leaves a legacy of most of her girls having earned their Gold Award. Under her guidance, many girls not only stayed in scouting through high school, but they became role models for younger girls by leading camp activities and teaching traditional scouting skills to Brownies and Juniors. Marie truly knows how to help every girl reach her potential!
Debbie Nawara is a name that Girl Scouts associate with the Mariners, huge troops, LEAP, the Community Walls Project, More Abouts…, BluePrints, the 75th Anniversary, and Adult Development & Training. It would be impossible to list all of the programs, projects, and people to which she has contributed so much. As a staff member for more than 30 years, Debbie has earned the respect of her co-workers and much admiration and gratitude from adult volunteers for her continuing, outstanding work.
Louise Crumpacker has spent over 30 of her 50-plus
years in Girl Scouting as “Mother Nature” for Girl Scout Day Camps. She has a knack for enchanting today’s techsavvy girls with the beauty and wonder of nature. She has traveled with girls all over the US and Europe, giving them the opportunity to experience other cultures and customs. At home in the Duneland Service Unit, Louise has held many positions that have led to girls and adults finding their unique gifts and developing their special potential.
Susan Rakis has, in the last 34 years, enthusiastically and positively impacted so many area of scouting – the Cookie Sale Program, Membership, Camps, the 75th Anniversary Celebration, and shelter troops. She knows how to recruit new volunteers, excels at building teams, sets goals and surpasses them, remembers the name of nearly everyone she meets, and is nearly impossible to say “no” to. It is no surprise that Susan is also a Lifetime Member of Girl Scouts!
Sue Joys is a past CEO of the former Drifting Dunes Council, and has been serving Girl Scouts for 50 years. Her focus has always been on how decisions and actions impact the girls and she is known for always listening to every side of an issue. She still loves the outdoors and volunteers for Day Camp and Scouting-Girl Style in Valparaiso. Sue is a model of Girl Scouting and continues to inspire girls and adult volunteers.

As a Service Unit Manager and contributor to excellent training records, her area has earned the President’s Award for many years in a row. Marianne has been involved in Girl Scouting from the Troop to the National level with awe-inspiring dedication and leadership.
Unit #295. She has also been a Troop Leader, Service Unit Coordinator, Registrar, Troop Consultant, Product Sale Manager, and Council Task Force participant over the last 40-plus years. Joan has served as a key player in embracing the mission and goals of Girl Scouts, and she embodies the vision of Juliette Gordon Low in her work with both girls and adults.
Linda Walton has served Girl Scouts for over 25 years
Stella LiPomi enthusiastically became an adult volunteer with Nokomis Service Unit #295 when she turned 18, just a few 50-odd years ago. She has served as a Troop Leader, Service Unit Secretary and Treasurer, Council Delegate, and a National Convention attendee. Through her dedication in community, she has instilled the values of generosity and service in the girls and adults with whom she works. Stella is a walking treasure of Girl Scout history, songs, stories, and wisdom that she selflessly shares year after year.
as a phenomenal Registrar, going far beyond the call of duty to entice new families to discover scouting and to support the programming that makes them want to stay. The adults with whom she works trust her completely and are inspired by her astounding ability to solve problems and build bridges. Linda is a tremendous resource for Deerfield Service Unit #407 and for the entire scouting community.

Dynamic and Incredible Staff of the Year Award ( D. A .I.S.Y. ) The D.A.I.S.Y. is awarded to a staff member who has been in the position at least three years . This award recognizes the outstanding service of a staff member that has resulted in the development of partnerships with volunteers and/or community leaders to at least one service unit or program delivery audience toward the achievement of the council’s goals. Lis Christensson has been
called THE Trainer of Trainers. Her professional demeanor, patience, and endless knowledge are admired by those who have worked with her or benefitted from her experience during training sessions. Lis’ enthusiasm is contagious, and her outstanding ability to write, revise, and teach the material in training manuals means that Girl Scouts has competent, informed, and effective adults who in turn manage great troops of girls.
Irene Crea takes the “On my
Honor, I will try…” part of the Girl Scout Promise and applies it as “On my Honor, I will DO…”. As a Membership Specialist, Irene has started troops in many areas where scouting might not otherwise be established, such as Community Centers, challenging neighborhoods – she even started troops at Children’s Memorial Hospital! The Service Units she serves have increased by 60 troops just this year alone, and Irene follows up with every one of them. Because of her initiative and outstanding support, many girls and adults are part of scouting who might not have had the opportunity without Irene.
Dave Rastall is the Property
Manager for Camp River Trails. Besides maintaining the property, he is known for encouraging girls to learn how to care for their camp and take ownership of the tasks they can handle as service projects. He works incredibly well with the leaders who bring their troops to camp, gets to know the girls, and makes a point of asking what they think would make the camp better – then he researches the ways to make it happen! Dave is exceptional with first-time campers and responsible for many wonderful and memorable outdoor experiences.
The Year 1912 March 1, 1912 Captain Albert Berry made the first parachute jump from a moving airplane.

Years of Service 65 YEARS Annette Cameron, “Auntie Net”
has served in almost every possible position as an adult Girl Scout. She has been a Board Member, a Neighborhood Chairman, a council delegate, as well as a member of the Green Angel Choir. Annette has worked at day camp for over 20 years, taught Out of Doors training before it was LEAP, is currently involved with 5 troops, and the cookie program. She says her reason for remaining involved in Girl Scouting is because ‘the girls are fantastic and they keep you on your toes”. A favorite (or funny!) memory she has is when a Brownie Scout dropped her jacket into the latrine at Camp Woody Acres with her lunch inside the pocket! Needless to say, Auntie Net, opted instead to share her lunch with the Brownie. Auntie Net continues to volunteer because she thinks the girls are wonderful!
In the early 1950’s, Jeanne Hansen and Ruth Jensen were
the first people to stay at Camp Butternut Springs. There were no buildings yet, so they slept under the lumber that was there that was to be used for the buildings. They stayed 3 days and cooked all of their meals over a campfire! Jeanne is from the Logan Square area and led Senior Troop 524 for a number of years. She is unmarried and has no children, but has enjoyed many activities over the years with them, including trips to Starved Rock, a bicycle trip from Chicago to Camp Butternut Springs with her Senior troop, acting as the camp nurse at Juniper Knoll for her Service Unit encampments, and acting as guide for troops at Lincoln Park Zoo with information about the animals. Jeanne began going to scouts as a tag along with her sister in 1938 because there was no Brownie troop for her. She is 83 years old and just quit camping 2 years ago! She attended the rally in Daly Plaza and was very happy to see the large number of participants. Jeanne was active as a troop leader with 40 girls and also served on the Finance Committee of her legacy council. She is very passionate about showing scouts how to correctly honor the American flag because her father died fighting in World War 1. She was very enthusiastic about the program and what it can provide for the girls.

Kay Monroe was a Girl Scout in
Ohio in the second grade. “They” were not taking girls until they were 3rd grade. Kay’s mother told her that if she worked really hard that she could skip second grade. So she did. She went to 3rd grade in January and joined Girl Scouts. Kay participated in Girl Scouts in Germany. As a volunteer, Kay served as a service unit manger, a troop leader for at least two troops. Kay was very active in the cookie sale, serving on the cookie committee for Girl Scouts of Prairie Winds Council during her volunteer tenure. Kay also ran an outreach summer camp in her area, with funding provided by All State, for all expenses for 6 weeks for 5 years. She served as a membership specialist and membership manager before she retired in 2008. Kay’s daughter was a “Gold girl”, earning her Gold Award. “You meet so many people at conventions, at annual meetings etc., the next time you go; you see those people again and meet a whole new group of people.” That’s one of the best parts of Girl Scouts, the wonderful people.
Years of Service 55 YEARS Marylee Schmidt, Marylee or Lee as she is known by many enjoys Girl Scouting
and fondly recalls her girl years when she was a C.I.T. at Camp Juniper Knoll and when she was chosen to attend the Round-Up in 1958 in Detroit, MI. As an adult she has had various roles including; staff for the Idaho Round-Up, troop leader for various grade levels, Service Unit Director, trainer for The Out of Doors, day camp staff, cookies chair at the service unit and council level, and member of the Adult Recognition and Alumni Committees. Lee’s favorite memories revolve around the trips she took with girls to Colorado and to the Birthplace. Her daughters continue to be involved in Girl Scouting and her granddaughter is showing interest in Lee’s scouting memorabilia. Lee enjoys the many friendships she has made through Girl Scouting.
The Year 1912 April 16, 1912 Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly across the English Channel.

Years of Service 50 YEARS For half the life of the Girl Scout movement, Lis Christensson has been an adult member, but for 10 years before that, she was a girl member in Denmark. At 18, Lis had taken on the responsibilities of a troop of 40 girls ensuring that the promise of Girl Scouting was passed on. Her commitment to the out of doors and training had been established as she remembers facilitating an orienting course for 68 adults and Senior Girl Scouts. When she came to the United States as an adult with 2 daughters and a son, she continued her volunteer efforts by producing a council calendar with Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts for 14 years, impacting at least 100 girls; training them in graphic design, decision making, budgeting and team work. She is an accomplished photographer and has passed this on, also. She served on the Board of Directors of Girl Scouts of DuPage and continued training out of door modules and others, being honored by earning the Thanks and Thanks II Badge. In 1997, she became the Director of Adult Development and she continues to hold that position. Her enthusiasm for Girl Scouting spills over to every one she meets and recruits, looking for the best match for our talents and passions. She is the proud grandmother of 4 Girl Scouts, Sarah who will bridge to Juniors this year, an18 year old adult member who is already a leader for her Cadette twin sisters. For those of us who know Lis, and those of you who have been touched by her through training, we are very lucky she has brought her considerable talent and caring to Girl Scouting.
Mary Helfrich grew up on the far northwest side of Chicago and began in Brownies when she was 8 and her mother was the leader. She has camped at Juniper Knoll and Butternut Springs and taken a troop to Juniper Knoll. Mary has visited all four World Centers! Mary also served as an exchange trip leader to Gloucestershire England n 1973. Florence Lorance has 9 children, 7 daughters and 2 sons. She started her volunteering for the Girl Scouts in 1962 so her
oldest daughter could have a troop in the North Beverly neighborhood, in the legacy GS of Chicago Council. Flo continued as a troop leader for all seven daughters and beyond for many years. When Flo was a GS she attended Camp Juniper Knoll and made sure that all of her troops camped at Camp JK. When her daughter taught at Misericordia South knowing that she was a family of Girl Scouts asked her if they could start a GS troop. At one time her troop consisted of 28 girls from 14 different H.S in Chicago. In her own words, she loved her scouts, the adult volunteers, her experiences and her weekly visits to Misericordia South. She has great pride and gratitude in being part of the GSUSA, GSC and GSGCNWI. Flo is still a member of SU 267 Beverly/Morgan Park, in Chicago.
Pam Whiteside was a Brownie and Junior Girl Scout in the early to mid 50’s. She enjoyed having her mom as her troop
leader and selling cookies. During the late 50’s, she and another Junior Girl Scout and her mother were featured in an advertisement for Scouts in Chicago and had pictures taken downtown at the Girl Scout office during cookie selling time. She enjoyed the programs and activities that they participated in. Pam in turn became a troop leader for her daughter in the early 70’s. They are from the River Grove area and had so many girls wanting to be in Brownies, they started a second troop. Her troop number was 1562 and was in the Legacy Lonetree Council. During this time, she was called “Krafty” because she was the craft counselor for years during day camp at Wildrose. Pam is a lifetime member and is currently in Troop #007. This is a group of adult women Girl Scouts who have been together for many years. They have 2 annual programs, a Spring Fling and a campout in September at Wildrose.
