CAMP GUIDE Planning & Basics

General Information Parents and Guardians,

“Why send my daughter to camp?” If you are asking yourself this question, then we encourage you to keep reading. A recent study by the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) confirms that outdoor experiences empower girls to get involved and take action. According to More than S‘mores (2014), girls who regularly spend time outdoors eclipse their peers who spend less time outdoors in: environmental stewardship, more readily seeking challenges and solving problems — all important traits in 21st Century leadership. At Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana camps, we will challenge your daughters to: • •

try new things ask for help when needed

help others when there is an opportunity to do so

Camping gives your daughter the experience of living outdoors, making new friends, exploring the world around her, singing at the top of her lungs, creating art, and discovering more about who she is.

QUIZ

PARENT

Use this quiz as a first step, a guide to assessing your daughter’s readiness for day camp, resident camp or both! 1. Has she slept away from home without a parent? If not, she might prefer our day camp experiences. 2. Can she put away her cell phone for a while so she can enjoy her time at camp? Turn off the electronics and tune in to nature! 3. Is she ready to travel to day camp on a bus without a family member? 4. Is your daughter willing to sleep, eat and play with all girls who are not her best friends from home? 5. Is she willing to do her share in planning? 6. Can she adapt to new places and people? 7. Can she take care of personal needs with little guidance? 8. Is she ready to try something new and have an exciting adventure? 9. What are her interests: arts? sports? fitness? science? saving the planet?

Camping gives her the opportunity to be more independent as she takes care of her belongings and herself with the encouragement of our compassionate, dedicated camp staff.

Camp is an active/doing place. Girls will individually challenge themselves by trying and learning new things while working together with “old friends” and “new friends.” Camp is a place that you can trust that your daughter will be safe as she “spreads her wings.”

CAMP GUIDE

Adventure begins here!

Planning & Basics

Make new friends, eat S‘mores, stay up late, hike, bike, sing around a campfire and have more fun than you can imagine. Start planning for an amazing summer! Not registered as a Girl Scout yet? No problem! Just sign up now! No need to be in a troop to participate.

Bring a friend!

Interested in attending camp, but no one from your troop wants to go with you? Introduce a friend who is not a Girl Scout to the fun girls have at camp! Together you can explore the outdoors, learn new skills and meet lots of new people. Sign up as buddies (must be same age and in same program) and have a great summer adventure. Additional $15 registration fee for non-Girl Scout friends will be automatically charged when registering. Remember that camp is a great place to come by yourself, too. You’ll make lots of new friends while you’re there!

Girl Scout Cookies

Girls can earn their way to camp through the Girl Scout Cookie program! Our Girl Scout Cookie program is an amazing way for girls to support their Girl Scout year with a plan, fund those personalized plans with their proceeds and learn new financial literacy and customer skills. Your troop can even decide to use its cookie proceeds to help the girls in your troop pay for camp. The Girl Scout Cookie program is a fantastic way to fund a camp experience! Visit our website to get resources for the 2015 Cookie program: www. girlscoutsgcnwi.org/cookie-resources Registration for day camp and resident camp programs opens March 1, 2015. As your troop continues to work on reaching its cookie goals, don’t wait to register for the camp programs that interest you. You don’t want to miss out on camp while your troop is still reaching its goals!

CAMP GUIDE Planning & Basics

General Information One-Stop Guide

for Parents and Guardians Please read carefully, information changes from year to year.

Girl Scout summer camp is open to ALL girls entering 1st – 12th grade regardless of race, color, nationality or socioeconomic factors. Grades listed for each program refer to the grade the camper will be entering in the fall.

Membership Girl Scout membership is required to participate. Non-members must add the $15 membership fee to the registration fee for membership through Sept. 30, 2015. Girl Scouts of the USA provides basic accident insurance coverage for all registered Girl Scouts as a supplement to the family’s existing insurance coverage.

Friends/Buddies Girls attend camp individually, not as a troop, though they may choose to attend with one friend/ buddy. Every attempt is made to place them in the same unit, but is not guaranteed. Units are generally made up of girl who is in the same level of Girl Scouting, so friends who vary greatly in age are not likely to be placed together.

Girls with Special Needs We are committed to accommodating girls with special needs. Our goal is to provide a positive camp experience for all girls. Parents/guardians of girls with special needs should contact Peggy Brothers (pbrothers@girlscoutsgcnwi.org) so the best placement and appropriate accommodations can be made.

Proper Behavior Required Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live, work and play together. It is a community of many people, and we expect everyone to behave appropriately. The camp director and staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, GSGCNWI reserves the right to send any girl home who constantly misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp rules, or whose behavior towards others (campers or staff) is unacceptable. There is no refund in these cases.

4

Camp Staff and Leadership Members of our camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, fun-loving and caring individuals. They are selected based on their experience, ability to serve as role models and their genuine desire to work with children. Our staff is committed to creating a caring and supportive environment that respects each girl as an individual. Staff candidates are recruited from colleges and universities, local community agencies and referrals. At our day camps, volunteers and seasonal staff provide the leadership. Individuals must be at least 18 years old and complete a thorough application process which includes a background check. The health and safety of our campers is always the first priority of the staff. Staff training prior to camp includes supervising and caring for campers, activity programming, first aid and CPR, team building, and much more. Staff members who supervise high-adventure activities are required to have additional training and qualifications. Every staff member is a registered member of Girl Scouts.

Positions Available Each summer we seek highly motivated and talented people to join our staff. Those interested in a job at camp should visit our website at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/employmentopportunities for more information. “The very best part of camp is sharing songs with good friends old and young around the campfire!” TJ can’t imagine what a summer without camp would be. TJ has been a day camp director for more than 20 years, most of those taking place at Camp Greene Wood. Starting her camp experience attending Camp White Deer (Lone Tree Area Girl Scouts) as a camper, TJ then came back to camp as a volunteer. She began volunteering when her oldest daughter was ready to attend, and continued through the length of her younger daughter’s camping experience. Since TJ set a great example in the camping world, both of her daughters continue their volunteer involvement as adults. Having earned both her BS and MS in nursing from Northern Illinois University, TJ spends her noncamp time as a nursing faculty member.

“Singing songs around the campfire.” Kary has been an 8th grade science teacher for 8 years and a camp director for 4 years. Prior to being the director at Camp Palos, Kary was the assistant director and director at Camp Butternut Springs. Kary has spent many summers as a camper herself, attending Camp Butternut Springs and Juniper Knoll along with her church’s camp Tower Hill in Michigan. Kary readily looked forward to coming back to camp every summer as a camper and jumped at the possibility of doing so again when she realized that as a teacher she would have her summers free. With a bachelor’s degree in soil science and a master’s in science education, Kary loves bringing her science background to camp wherever she can. Choose from three camps. Stay close to home or head out and experience a new camp. Our camps are set up for you to attend on your own or choose to head to camp with one friend.

Half-Week Options All grade levels have shorter options to attend. Sampler sessions are 2-night/3-day experiences perfect for the first time camper, or the camper who is not quite ready for a full-week experience. Choose to attend sessions that begin on Sunday afternoon and end Tuesday evening, or begin on Wednesday afternoon and end on Friday evening.

Looking for the perfect resident camp experience? How many days do you want to stay at camp? 3-6-10-14-21? Whatever you and your family are ready for, we have a session for you. From sampler programs to 3-week adventures, girls can choose from a variety of program topics and lengths of stay. At Camp Butternut Springs, we offer fun programs where you can choose your own activities, we’ve added more special themed programs, and several more travel programs. Special Program Aide training is for girls (entering 7 – 8 grade) who are ready to spread their wings and learn how to teach younger girls outdoor skills.

At Camp Juniper Knoll we’ve continued the extended season, offering progressive outdoor skills, including base-level skills to our youngest campers and opportunities to learn advanced skills for our experienced campers. We’ve even added several 10-day sessions that will amplify the camp experience. We’ll enjoy more “open air” dining as construction of the new dining hall and kitchen will begin. At Camp Pokanoka we’ve added several new “frogs” to be found while hiking. Cooking and drama programs have been added for the Brownies and our Juniors who love to play board games and now can challenge themselves as their favorite board games and plays come to life. Favorites like Road Trip, Go Wild, and Cast Iron Chef are back for the older girls.

Counselor-in-Training Internships will continue to be offered to girls who have completed CIT I and CIT II. It’s an opportunity for you to volunteer at resident camp. Contact Peggy Brothers at pbrothers@ girlscoutsgcnwi.org to find out what weeks are available.

CAMP GUIDE

For parents/guardians:

Resident Camps

Camp is the Place for Girls to Grow

Picture your daughter learning new skills, building her self-confidence, meeting new people, and making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. All this can be hers at Girl Scout resident camp.

Girl Scout resident camp programs are for all girls and offer terrific value. Her camp fee covers: •

Lodging (# nights and days based on session length);

Girl Scout camp is a safe place where all girls (even those not currently Girl Scouts) can experience the great outdoors. It is a place where a girl can hike a trail, stretch her limits, build her self-esteem or learn a new song. Girls will never forget the first time they cook over a fire, discover a tree or paddle a canoe. Being part of a community and gaining dependence are just two of the many benefits of summer camp.

A wide variety of camp programming, supervised by our trained staff;

Staffing that includes camp counselors, health supervisor, waterfront staff, program staff, and camp leadership team which includes the camp director;

Meals prepared by our food service staff, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables; accommodations can be made for girls with special diets, with advance notice!

Camp is a Place Where a Girl Will: •

play games

feel good about herself

write a letter

live without TVs and computers

discover her potential

and have the time of her life!

Session themes cover a majority of the week’s activities. Girls will have the opportunity to include swimming, playing games, cookouts, nature, hiking, crafts and lots of fun to their schedule.

Half-Week, Full-Week and Longer Sessions Available! Half-week programs are available for all ages, even Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors. These programs are scheduled early in the season to allow girls the chance to try camp and attend again later in the summer. There are half-week sessions offered the same time as full-week sessions for first-time campers who want to attend camp during the same week as “experienced camper” family members. We’ve added several longer sessions for girls who love camp and don’t want to go home.

Things You Need to Know! Arrivals and Departures Check-in on Sunday from 1:30 – 3 p.m. (Wednesday for some half-week sessions) Please do not arrive before 1:15 p.m. as camp staff members will be doing final preparation for camper arrivals. Check-out is on Friday evening (Tuesday for some half-week sessions) The closing ceremony that parents are welcome to attend begins at 7 p.m., with camper dismissal about 7:30 p.m. Please do not plan on arriving earlier than 6:45 p.m. We recognize that you are excited about seeing your daughter, and that she will be looking forward to seeing you. However, girls are expected to remain with their units until dismissal so we ask that you do not approach then until that time. There are designated areas for parents to wait for the closing ceremony to begin. Upon dismissal a photo ID will be required to ensure that we are releasing girls safely into the care of their parents/ guardians.

Our camps all follow standards set forth by Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Our Girl Scout camps offering summer camp programming are licensed by the state, and uphold state and federal codes for health, safety, site food service management, human resources, program design, and activities.

We Love to Celebrate!

Resident Camps

Girls celebrating a 5- or 10-year resident camp milestone will be recognized during the closing ceremony of their session. Join us as we celebrate these young women who have contributed to our camp communities over the years. We count only years at Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana resident camps. Send an e-mail by June 1 to camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org with your daughter’s name, camp attending and program name so she can receive her patch.

Encourage Girls to Spread the Word about How Much They Love Camp! Does your daughter love Girl Scout resident camp? If she tells her friends, your camper will receive a special patch. Girls who have attended resident camp for at least one year, and recruit two friends who sign up and attend resident camp will be recognized at the closing ceremony of their session. Friends do not need to attend camp together and do not need to be in the same grade level. Friends that are recruited must not be girls that have attended Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana resident camps previously. Send an e-mail with your daughter’s name, camp attending, and program session along with the same information for the 2 new campers that she has recruited for her recruiter patch by June 1 to camper@girlscoutsgcnwi.org

Sleeping accommodations vary by camp and by unit, and may be a platform tent, yurt (a tent with a dome) or an open-air cabin we call a tabin. Girl Scout

Summer

Day Camp Information Adventure Begins at Day Camp Summer day camp includes fun-filled days with activities that open up new worlds, provide new opportunities to build confidence and just be a girl. Girls discover they can do things for themselves like cook something over a fire with their newly found cooking skills…connect with the outdoors when they hike a trail or see a deer along the way…and make memories that they will have the rest of their lives. Girls will find a variety of program options that will peak their interests during their time at day camp. Each program has a special focus where girls can explore an area a bit more in depth. They still have a chance to do all the regular camp favorites like arts and crafts, hiking, and tie dying. Girls in each unit have a chance to offer their own ideas to customize the unit’s program for the week. This means that a program’s content may change from week to week. Some requirements for Girl Scout journeys or badges may be met during the week.

Girl Scout day camp programs are the best value in the area. Her camp fee covers:

CAMP GUIDE Day Camps

Health and Safety Safety is a part of everything we do from always walking with a buddy to practicing emergency procedures. We follow Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. standards and that of the American Camp Association. Our camps are also licensed by the state and follow all state and federal codes for site, food service, health and safety, staffing, program design and management. Every girl must have a HEALTH HISTORY to participate in day camp. It is REQUIRED. A girl’s registration will not be considered complete until her health history is submitted. Any medications to be taken while at camp must be accompanied by an Authorization to Medicate Form. This will be sent via-email in the confirmation you will receive two weeks before camp. List any severe allergies or other important health information. The health supervisor will contact parents of campers with serious or life-threatening allergies to complete an Allergy Action Plan. Each program site has a health supervisor who will contact parents about health concerns as needed

Five days of programming that will keep her busy, challenged, and meeting new friends

Staffing by a comprehensive camp staff that includes a health supervisor, program staff and camp counselors

Parents of a girl with specific needs should contact Peggy Brothers at pbrothers@girlscoutsgcnwi.org to discuss those needs.

Food for her group’s cookout

Day camp is held rain or shine. Buildings or shelters are available in the event of severe weather.

NOTE: Transportation to camp via chartered bus is EXTRA

Volunteer-Led Day Camps A variety of volunteer-planned and led day camps take place at a variety of locations ranging from Morris, Mokena, Peotone, Channahon-Minooka, Lockport and Valparaiso, IN. Check out page 56 to see what our day camp volunteers have planned.

All safety procedures are reviewed with campers on the first day of camp.

Unit Size Programs are divided into groups called units. Average unit size is based on the program level. At least two adults supervise each unit’s program. Units are made up of girls from several troops. Girls can request to have one buddy in her unit with her. Units have their own outdoor unit site to call home for the week. Activities throughout the day or week will take them all over camp.

Day Camp Information

Day Camps

Transportation Bus:

Transportation to camp is available by charted bus. There is an additional fee to cover the cost of bus transportation. Families can provide their own transportation. Many families choose to carpool with other friends. The transportation method must be designated at the time of registration. Your designation helps to project the number of buses needed, ridership and commuting times for each bus route. Every effort is made to keep commuting times to under an hour. Day camp transportation routes begin around 7:45 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. See the schedule for locations available in your area. In an effort to make transportation routes as efficient as possible for all campers, we will cancel a stop if there are not at least five riders registered for the stop by May 1. Last-minute changes to bus routes are difficult to accommodate. Two weeks before camp begins, a confirmation will be sent by e-mail. This confirmation will have specific bus schedule information and a transportation agreement; campers must bring the completed agreement to camp.

40

Metra Trains: This applies for Camp Greene Wood only. Transportation stops that list a Metra train station are the places where campers can board the westbound Metra (BNSF) train in the morning, arrive at the train station near camp and then ride the bus to camp. In the afternoon, campers ride the bus to the train station, board the eastbound train and travel to their designated stop. Adult chaperones ride the train with the girls. Cost of train ticket is included in the transportation fee.

*Bus and Train Stop Safety Parents are responsible for campers before transportation arrives in the morning and immediately after the campers are dropped off. Please be on time to pick up your camper.

Transportation routes and schedules: Camp Greene Wood: page 48 Camp Palos: page 56.

Volunteer-Led Day Camps

Day Camps

Volunteer-led day camps are community-based summer camp endeavors undertaken by talented

Information about the specific volunteer-led day camps can be found on our website. Follow the link for Summer Camp. (Information will be up by February 1, 2015.)

and enthusiastic volunteers who have organized a camping experience for Girl Scouts.

Each day camp has a unique theme and specialized activities. Many volunteer-led day camps feature teen mentoring opportunities for older girls and an overnight for interested campers. These camps utilize a variety of sites for their programming, including state and county parks, forest preserves and Girl Scout camps. All volunteer-led day camps are supported by council staff to ensure they meet numerous standards regarding program, budgeting, risk management, and health and safety. Registration is handled by each day camp. Some volunteer-led day camps utilize GCNWI’s online registration system. Volunteer–led day camps rely on adult volunteers to participate in all aspects of the camp program. Without you, these camps are unable to serve the girls in the community. Please contact the volunteer team leading the camp in your community about options and opportunities. Girls and volunteers from surrounding communities are welcome to attend.
