Girl Scout Week

March

6-12

2016

It all started with a phone call on March 12, 1912, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world.” With that, Juliette Gordon Low founded the first Girl Scout troop and our movement began. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunities to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Girl Scouts of all ages are encouraged to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting in the Heart of the South during Girl Scout Week, March 6-12, by demonstrating courage, confidence, and character in ways that have real impact on our community. The first council troops were established in 1916 in Memphis, TN. Sunday, March 6 Girl Scout Sunday This is a time for Girl Scouts to reflect upon the importance of the words, "On my honor, I will try to serve God" from the Girl Scout Promise. (Girl Scout Sabbath and Shabbat are on March 12). Here are some activity ideas: • Attend your place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout in your uniform • Perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony at your place of worship • Consider earning your My Promise, My Faith pin • Say or sing grace at a meal Monday, March 7 Service to Family Do a good deed for the people in your family or your home. Here are some activity ideas: • Recite the Girl Scout Promise and Law to your family • Read the Juliette Gordon Low story • Try a “Do You Know Juliette Gordon Low?” Activity • Learn about our local council history

WAYS TO CELEBRATE GIRL SCOUT SUNDAY OR GIRL SCOUT SABBATH • Include a quarter page flyer found on the website or a special paragraph in your church bulletin. • Ask your place of worship to list GS Sunday/Sabbath on their calendars (electronic, etc.) • Wear your Girl Scout uniform to the service.

Girl Scout Sunday & Sabbath Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which includes many of the principles and values common across religions. So while we are a secular organization, Girl Scouts has always encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys via their faiths’ religious recognitions. Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath give girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. This year Girl Scout Sunday is on March 6 and Girl Scout Sabbath is on Saturday, March 12. Look to the right to see lots of ways you and your troop can celebrate at your house of worship.

Earn Your My Promise, My Faith Award Girls of all grade levels can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin, which complements existing religious recognitions and allows girls to further strengthen the connection between their faith and Girl Scouts.

Once each year, a girl can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin by carefully examining the Girl Scout Law and tying it directly to tenets of her faith. Requirements for this pin are included in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting for all levels.

• Proceed in together and sit as a troop during the service. This will allow the congregation to see you and make your troop more visible to church members. • Serve as greeters or ushers for the service. Also, serve as the readers or any other roles during the service. • Recognize Girl Scouts present. Ask past /current Girl Scouts, volunteer leaders, Gold/Silver/Bronze Award recipients to stand. • Present Adult Leader Religious Award recognitions. See the PRAY website: www.praypub.org. • Present girl religious awards (either “My Promise, My Faith” badges or specific faith-based pins from PRAY). • Say a special prayer or dedication for all Girl Scouts and volunteers in the congregation, throughout our country and all over the world. • Take a photo of your troop with your clergyperson. This picture can be used by the place of worship and the troop (e.g., placed in next week’s bulletin, on the church website, etc.). • Hold a Cookie Booth sale after the service so members can support your troop. • Conduct a “Scouting for Food” drive or other drive as a part of Girl Scout Week. Let the congregation know that your troop will be collecting canned goods or other items before, after or during the service. • Create a picture display of service projects, events attended, troop activities, etc. to display during Girl Scout Week. • Put up indoor and/or outdoor signs or banners advertising Girl Scout Week celebrations, including worship services. • Host a milk & Girl Scout cookie reception after the worship service. Make sure your table also has literature talking about joining or volunteering with Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts Heart of the South and the Memphis Fire Department teamed up to offer HERo Day, a high-adventure career exploration day for girls in grades 6-12. Participants got the unique opportunity to train alongside Memphis Fire Department professionals and learn about exciting careers in firefighting and emergency medical services. The Memphis Fire Department is actively recruiting women for rewarding careers in firefighting and emergency services. Memphis Fire Department Director Gina Sweat said, “HERo Day was created to empower and educate young women in Memphis about considering non-traditional careers like firefighting, EMS, and emergency dispatching. By introducing them to female firefighters and paramedics, and the various career paths available to them, they can begin to imagine themselves in those roles and map out their future.” Though women can excel in these positions, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 3.7% of career firefighters are female. Girls were paired with females from the Memphis Fire Department as they rotated stations that allowed them to experience simulated firefighting environments, learn Hands Only CPR, suit up in protective gear and tackle a life-saving obstacle course. “If she can see it, she can be it,” said council CEO, Melanie Schild. “HERo Day is just one way that Girl Scouts is giving girls access to life changing opportunities. My hope is that through these types of career exploration events, passions are ignited and future careers are set in motion.” The highlights of the day were the opportunity to rappel from a two story building and witness search and rescue dogs in action. Girls also learned about the physical and educational requirements to become a member of the department.

Thank you to the City of Memphis, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, Memphis International Raceway, Liberty Mutual and Tennessee Army National Guard. And a special thank you to the women and men of the Memphis Fire Department for volunteering their time to make this event possible.

SAVE THE DATE! The 2nd Annual HERo Day is scheduled for September 24, 2016 16

dear daisy Dear Daisy is an advice column answered by Oxford, MS Girl Scout Troop 20356 started in 2013. For the past three years Isabella, Jacelyn, Amy, Melissa and Ken’nia have received and answered questions from around the council solving the problems of prom dresses, to wearing make-up, to first time break ups!

Dear Daisy,

Yesterday, at the soccer game, I tore my ACL. I feel super bad and can not play anymore for the current season and maybe more. I feel like I am letting my team down. My brother who is two years younger than me is in the same math class as me. He makes higher grades, and it makes me feel dumb. My parents always try to have him tutor me, but it isn’t fair to me. It only makes me feel worse. What should I do? Sibling Arithmetic in Oxford

Parents can be very frustrating but we have to take their point of view from things. Your parents are only trying to help and do what they see is right for you! I suggest talking to them and letting them know that you wish you had more freedom. Explain your point of view and they might be more understanding! I hope this helped :)

m

Dear Daisy,

We each have our own unique talents, sounds like your brother’s is math. Sometimes our best talents can’t be graded. Celebrate the talents you’ve been given and ask your brother for help when you need it. Chances are you have helped him learn things his entire life as the older sister so why not ask for the extra help? Daisy

I am sure if you ask him in a calm manner and in a sweet way he will say yes. Find something in common with him and maybe do a sweet surprise having to do with the subject. Good Luck. Daisy

I have been struggling to get along with my parents. They have different views than me and are always making me super frustrated about everything. I am a freshman in high school and deserve more freedom than they are allowing. What can I possibly do? Spreading My Wings in Starkville

You should be confident in what you do and have. Your team will understand that you cannot play. As long as you cheer them on and wish them the best they will love you no matter what. Your peers at school are probably staring at you because they are interested in learning how you tore ACL. Be confident and proud of everything you do. Just want you to know that Daisy loves you and knows you’re a good sport. You just have to show everyone else. Daisy

Dear Sibling Arithmetic,

Ken’n ia

Spring formal is coming up and I want to ask this boy to the dance. But I am afraid to ask and be turned down. What is the best advice you can give me? Dancing in Dyersburg

Dear Daisy,

Every time my school group goes somewhere my friend keeps forgetting to bring her money on the trips and I always end up being her bank. How do I break it to her that I am not her bank? Broke Girl in Bartlett

Dear Broke Girl,

I am sure if you tell her how you feel she will understand. Try to text her before you all go places and remind her to bring money. If she forgets again you can always gently tell her that you do not have enough to cover both of you. Daisy

CONGRATULATIONS to Isabella and Amy!

Two of our Dear Daisy writers are graduating in May! Over the past 4 years these girls have answered and advised girls across the council with life’s dilemmas. We want to wish Isabella and Amy the very best in their bright futures! GIRL SCOUTS HEART OF THE SOUTH
