Welcome!

Thank you for joining us for the One Smart Cookie Celebration presented by FedEx and benefiting Girl Scouts Heart of the South. We are excited that you have chosen to join us tonight as we honor these seven Smart Cookies for their outstanding contributions to our community. Girl Scouts’ mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Essentially, we strive to build “Smart Cookies” just like the estimable women we celebrate tonight. By lifting them up we are showing our girls what true leadership and character is all about, and we encourage our girls to lead by their example. At Girl Scouts, we are all about practicing everyday leadership, preparing girls to empower themselves, and promoting G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM experiences. Because girls who practice leadership like a Girl Scout are more likely to reach their full potential. Again, Girl Scouts doesn’t empower girls – we prepare girls with the skills and experiences they need to empower themselves for life. Thank you for being here today to show your support for these female leaders and for your continued support of Girl Scouts and our efforts to build the G.I.R.L. leaders of tomorrow. All our best,

The National Stand Beside Her Movement encourages girls and women to connect and support each other; to value ourselves and have the confidence to celebrate our own unique gifts and applaud the successes of others.

We commit to change our current culture of negative comparison and competition and learn to celebrate and lift up each woman and girl so that we can change the world

Let’s speak out and shake things up! Join us and celebrate National Stand Beside Her Week October 28 - November 3, 2018!

Starting in childhood, girls are inundated with negative messages and behaviors that prevent them from building healthy relationships and ideal about their potential. The National Stand Beside Her project is a call to action to propel women and girls forward by ending comparison and competition and creating more collaboration and support. Established in 2014 by Girl Scouts Heart of the South, the National Stand Beside Her Project has since been embraced by Girl Scout councils from across the country, banding together to encourage women and girls to support one another so that every woman and girl can reach her fullest potential. This is a crucial time for the future of girls. 51% of the US population is female, but less than 20% of our elected

leadership is. Only 21% of girls believe they currently have most of the key qualities required to be a good leader, and at the current rate of change it will take until 2085 for women to reach parity with men in leadership roles. Stand Beside Her stands to bridge this gap. Through our Stand Beside Her Memphis initiative, our council has been able to create a community of support for women and girl-serving organizations. By implementing our values throughout the community, the Stand Beside Her Memphis Coalition has brought local organizations and individuals that serve women and girls together to sit at one table. By collaborating, sharing opportunities, referring services, and connecting women and girls to resources, we have shaped monumental change in our city.

For ideas on how you and your organization can get involved, visit our website at www.standbesideher.org.

CELEBRATE THE WORKING MOMS IN YOUR LIFE!

Everyday fifty-two million women in the United States balance the demands of motherhood and careers. Women now make up more of the workforce than ever before, and with 70% of the total female workforce having children under the age of 18, these women on average put in a 98-hour work week factoring in work and home duties. This is equivalent to holding down 2 1/2 full time jobs! A group of GSHS girls took notice of the long hours moms keep. To help honor not only their own mothers, but ones all over the country, in 2018 they launched National Working Mothers’ Day - a celebration of mothers in the workforce to be observed annually each Friday before Mothers’ Day. The girls encouraged national, regional and local businesses and organizations to show their appreciation for today’s working mothers. With the help of GSHS council staff, the girls got the word out about their exciting new initiative through social media channels, press releases, email campaigns, a website, videos and more! They encouraged businesses and individuals to

do something special to honor the working moms in their lives and post pictures using the hashtag #nationalworkingmothersday2018. Their outstanding efforts reached thousands of people across the country! The effort was promoted nationally by GSUSA and both Working Mother and Ms. magazines promoted the day online. Locally, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland was so impressed with this girl-led initiative that he shared it with other cities, and now everyone - nationwide - is looking forward to celebrating National Working Mothers’ Day each and every year!

This world needs more G.I.R.L. leaders, and no organization prepares girls to lead better than Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts prepares girls to lead by practicing the skills that many of today’s leaders lack the four key G.I.R.L. leadership skills - grit and goal setting, innovation and real-world problem solving, risk taking, and leading others with empathy. We believe deliberate practice is the key to reaching one’s full leadership potential, and we do this by preparing girls to lead—deliberately and consciously—through everyday experiences and activities. Girls can only reach their full potential when they practice leadership the Girl Scout way over a lifetime, not just during a specific life stage. Girl Scouts is for every girl, at every age, every day.
