GSNI Council-Run Summer Camp Information

Camper Accessibility and Accommodations The goal of our camps is to provide a successful experience for all girls. Please communicate with our Customer Care team about campers with any special needs, disabilities, or health concerns. This enables our camp staff to make every effort to accommodate those needs. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice. All campers may specify dietary needs during registration. Families do not need to provide food but may bring their camper’s favorite alternatives if desired.

Camper Paperwork To provide the best experience for all campers, we request health and personal information to be submitted prior to camp arrival. This will include activity waivers, camper health histories, GSNI Camper Confidential, and more. All camper paperwork will be collected online and will be emailed within 10 days of registering for camp. These will be due electronically by June 1, 2022 to ensure camp staff have time to prepare for your camper’s arrival. All requested paperwork must be turned electronically in before camper’s arrival. Every camper of any age must have a current health history on file to participate in summer camps. This is mandatory. Please note: ⇨ Doctor’s Physical Requirements for Resident and Day Campers only: Resident camper’s health history forms must be signed by your child’s physician and accompanied with a copy of recent physical. in camper registration confirmation sent out after registration. ⇨ All vaccinations required by schools will be required for campers and must be attached with camper’s physical. If you have a vaccination exception for medical reasons only, please reach out to camp staff at customercare@girlscoutsni.org. ⇨ Any medications to be taken while at camp must be accompanied with a Medication Log form.

Girl-Led Camp As a youth-driven organization, we encourage campers to participate in as many camp activities as they can. Each unit will decide together on activities, pack-out meals, and how their week will go. Each week is unique to the camper’s wishes! Camper’s Choice is a block of time during each camp session where many camp activities are open at once, giving campers the ability to choose without worry about what the overall unit wants to do. It is a time at camp when they can interact with other campers outside of those in their units. Activities vary each session but will include one of the following: aquatic activity, arts and crafts, archery, or crate stacking, badgework, outdoor skill development, games, themed-based activities, and nature/ environmental activities.

Weather Summer Camp at GSNI is held rain or shine! If weather is unusually hot, rainy, or cold, camp activities will be adjusted with campers’ safety and comfort in mind. Some activities, traditions, and sleeping accommodations may be adjusted or eliminated if weather concerns will pose a danger. Horse stables, canoe lessons, and off-site activities may fully cancel their programs due to weather and adjust off-site activities when needed.

Living in the Outdoors Campers and staff live in groups called units, which are collections of sleeping cabins or tents in an outdoor setting. Sleeping arrangements may include platform tents, Adirondacks, or sleeping cabins with latrine bathrooms within the unit. Staff members sleep in the units in separate accommodations from the girls. All campers will spend the majority of their day outdoors or under outdoor shelters with natural air flow. Meals are well-balanced with choices for healthy alternatives and are served family-style in the dining hall. Campers will also cook some meals outdoors within units. We remind campers and families that all campers will be sleeping outdoors and should prepare for their session accordingly. girlscoutsni.org |

Trading Post The trading post refers to our camp store. Families can leave money (cash, credit cards, or checks), Cookie Dough/Cashew Cash/S’mores Dough with the trading post for their campers to shop throughout the week. The Trading Post is also available during check-in and check-out for families to shop. Items sold include camp apparel, camping supplies (mess kits, flashlights, water bottles), stationary, stuffed animals, fun patches (not Girl Scout badges), and novelty mementos.

Bring a Friend! Is your Girl Scout thinking about coming to camp but is hesitant because she doesn’t know anyone or has not been away from home overnight? She can bring a female non-Girl Scout friend! All her friend must do is sign up to be a Juliette (individually registered member of Girl Scouts), and she can join your Girl Scout at camp! Girls can request to be in the same cabin or tent. Please see Girl Scout Membership section for how to register as a Juliette.

Volunteer-Led Camps Service units around GSNI run their own day camp programs close to home! All Volunteer-led camp information, registration, and updates are handled by the volunteers directing the programs. We encourage anyone interested in their local camps to reach out to these volunteers directly.

Program Changes Although rare, the Girl Scout council, for a variety of reasons, may occasionally cancel a camp session. If this occurs, you can expect the entire camp fee, including the deposit, to be refunded. Other times, certain activities described in the camp sessions must be suspended or changed due to circumstances beyond our control, such as inclement weather, equipment availability, and staffing. In these situations, we may provide alternate program options. Under circumstances of this type, refunds should not be expected.

Land Acknowledgement A Land Acknowledgement is a statement recognizing the lasting relationship between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. Recognizing the land is an expression of gratitude and way of honoring Indigenous people who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial. Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois recognizes our Resource Centers and camps sit on ancestral Native land. We are currently researching these relationships and hope to name them soon. GSNI is committed to developing partnerships and programs that honor and amplify the voices of Indigenous communities and learning from their knowledge. We pay our respects to Indigenous elders both past and present.

Girl Scout camp is the perfect place for girls to take on leadership roles and become role models for younger girls! Since Girl Scouts is the premiere leadership organization for girls, Girl Scout camp provides unlimited options to hone leadership skills. The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is a great way for girls to learn about leadership, group dynamics, outdoor skills, program planning, and more! The CIT program is designed so girls participate in leadership training and apply those new skills with younger campers in the same week. In addition, CITs receive additional activity training such as ceremonies, outdoor skills, fire building, and more. Activities completed during the CIT program fulfill requirements towards earning the CIT I or CIT II Award. If girls want to earn CIT Awards, they must attend and complete CIT I before CIT II. Sessions can be attended without earning of the award. To maintain adequate social distance and gathering sizes, all girls must complete a CIT Application and be selected to participate in the CIT I, CIT II, and/or CIT Leadership programs. These applications will aid in understanding your CITs interests, strengths, and needs for this summer. For more information or to apply, please visit girlscoutsni.org/CIT. Applications can be submitted at any time after November 1, 2021. Please do NOT register for these sessions until you have received approval from the council.

How do you know if your camper (and you) are ready for camp? And what kind of camp—day only, overnight, leadership?

Is Your Camper Ready for Camp?

If your camper (and you) aren’t ready for camp, you may want to wait. We’d LOVE to have you here, but we want to make sure it’s an enjoyable experience for all of you. Here are some questions to think about… ⇨ Has your camper stayed overnight anywhere other than home? How did that experience go for them? For you? Were they sad, lonely, or homesick? Were they excited and did they want to go back? ⇨ Can your camper preform the following tasks on their own without your guidance: wash hair, brush teeth, take a shower, thoroughly apply sunscreen and bug spray? ⇨ Can your camper keep track of her own belongings, such as backpack and water bottle? ⇨ Would your camper be comfortable walking with a buddy at night to the bathroom? ⇨ Will your camper be okay staying in a tent or cabin with other campers they just met? ⇨ Will your camper be afraid of camp critters such as spiders or other insects? If so, can they tolerate them? ⇨ Will your camper try camp food that they may not have tried at home? ⇨ Does your camper make friends easily and settle well into new environments? ⇨ Is your camper excited to go to camp even if they may not have a friend to go with? ⇨ Will your camper be okay staying at camp overnight without having communication with you? Will YOU be okay with that?
