Vocabulary Kinetic: result of motion. Fossil Fuels: energy source from the earth (fossils that are millions of years old) that will eventually run out. Wind Energy: process of creating energy from wind. Constraint: a limitation.

Girl Scout Values Did you know Structural Engineers have to be considerate and caring by checking to make sure all structures are safe.

Nuclear Power is the use of nuclear reactions that release nuclear energy to generate heat. Solar Energy is a radiant light & heat from the sun that is harnessed using a range of ever evolving technologies such as solar heating. Wind Energy can be used for anything from power on boats, battery charging, or electricity to be used commercially.

Career Exploration

Structural Engineer Did you know that a Structural Engineer is trained to design the bones & muscles that create the form & shape of all man-made structures.


Kinetic Structure Challenge Project: Kinetic sculpture that moves and must withstand wind (fan or hairdryer) without falling apart for 30 seconds. Objective: Girls will work as a team using limited materials to build a structure to withstand wind for 30 seconds. Materials: Electric fan, tissue paper (4 pieces/team), cardstock (4 pieces/team), brass fasteners (8/team), paper cups (8/team), wooden skewers (8/team), paint stirrers (4/team), string (1 roll/ team), tape, scissors, sketch paper (for planning), pens/pencils. Directions: Girls will work in teams of 5 to plan and build their structures. Time limits will be determined by class time. They may come up and test their sculpture one time before the official challenge begins. Each team gets the materials as listed above.

Card Structure Game Directions: Every groups gets 10 playing cards or 10 index cards. Each group needs to build a structure that could stand by it’s self in 60 seconds.
