2012 Annual Report

Girl Scout Mission Statement Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

2012 Highlights With Girls, For Girls, a strategic blueprint for Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE), continues to help us fulfill our promise to deliver a fun and innovative leadership experience for girls who want to make a difference in their community. With Girls, For Girls is a collection of strategic priorities which commits us to:

Ensuring the girl voice leads the design and delivery of Girl Scouting pathways. Enhancing and supporting an adult structure to sustain membership growth and retention. Defining and executing a relevant GSWISE Brand. Launching initiatives that reach out to Urban and Latino communities. Ensuring and aligning current and future resources which execute our priorities and demonstrate good stewardship.

These strategic priorities, along with the key 2012 accomplishments in each area, are listed below.

Girls and Pathways Key Priority: Engaging girls in leadership capacities to define and develop the pathway structure.

With 29,323 girl members, GSWISE ranked fourth in the nation for market share among 112 Girl Scout councils.

One in five girls in the GSWISE jurisdiction, a nearly 20% overall girl market share, took part in Girl Scouting. Over 20% of these girls were African American or Hispanic.

The overall girl retention rate was 63%.

A total of 7,455 adult members worked primarily as volunteers, with a 65% retention rate.

Working hard and doing her best Although Bethany Blanchard has dreamed of becoming a clothes designer or lawyer, this Girl Scout Junior may be headed for a career in sales and marketing after selling over 1280 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. To achieve this goal Bethany employed strategies that the members of the Mistletoe Troop of 1917 from Muskogee, Oklahoma, which is on record to date as the first troop to sell cookies, could never have imagined in their wildest dreams. Bethany Blanchard

“My mom and I made a video and posted it on Facebook, I sent out e-mails to family and friends and I contacted customers from the year before,” said Bethany. In addition to utilizing the more traditional method of going door to door to sell to her neighbors, she also recruited her entire family to be part of her sales team and asked them to sell cookies at work and to their friends. “I’m very proud of her success in the cookie program –she worked hard, stayed focused and was very dedicated to achieving her goals,” commented her mother, Vicki. A fourth grader at Mary McLeod Bethune Academy in Milwaukee where her favorite subjects are writing and art, Bethany has been a Girl Scout for the past three years. As a member of the Community Outreach program, which is designed to involve girls in Girl Scouting who live in communities where there is little or no Girl Scout presence, she and her troop have enjoyed going to camp and on field trips, making blankets for puppies at the Wisconsin Humane Society, and “the cookie program, of course.” She also has had the honor of being a member of the elite 500 Club celebration for girls reaching the 500 packages level or higher. Bethany, whose favorite part of being a Girl Scout is meeting and making new friends, became involved in the Community Outreach Program through the Bethune Academy after-school program. “Bethany’s confidence and courage have increased tremendously since she became involved,” said Vicki. “I think it’s an awesome program and experience that every little girl should be a part of.” As for the trained leaders that deliver the Girl Scout experience to girls in the program, Bethany commented, “They are very nice, especially Ms. Brenda. They encourage us to work hard and do our best.” 4

2012 Highlights

GSWISE led the way for the Wisconsin Girl Scout Alliance to join GSUSA’s inaugural STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Advocacy Champion group, preparing Wisconsin councils to launch a STEM advocacy effort. A STEM advocacy day at the State Capitol allowed girls to showcase their Girl Scout STEM work and educated their elected representatives on the need for STEM education and the role Girl Scouts is playing in bringing more girls to STEM.

With support from Time Warner Cable and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), eight GSWISE Girl Scout Junior and Cadette robotics teams participated in First LEGO League competition. Four of those teams advanced to the State tournament.

Sixteen girls earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl can achieve in Girl Scouts. In addition, 133 girls earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and 602 girls earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award.

Following the success of When Words Hurt, the K-3 anti-bullying curriculum; When Friends are Not Friends, curriculum for grades 4 and 5, was developed and launched. Developed by GSWISE, this series trains leaders to recognize and address relational aggression and helps girls be advocates for themselves and others.

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting, Rock the Ice, featuring over 60 interactive activity stations, a ceremony of 100 flags, and special entertainment was held on March 10 at the Bradley Center. Sponsored by the Milwaukee Admirals hockey team, the event was attended by over 8,000 Girl Scouts, alumnae and family members.

Over 1,200 girls, adults, alumnae, and staff spent Saturday, June 9, celebrating Girl Scouts at the 100th Anniversary Camporee at Camp Alice Chester. The day included over 30 different activities such as swimming, canoeing, tie-dying, leather making, and rock climbing. 5

2012 Highlights

Twenty-two percent of girl members took advantage of a GSWISE camp experience where they made new friends, explored the world around them and learned a variety of new skills. Snap-on Incorporated helped us launch a joint camp experience for girls with the Kenosha Boys & Girls Clubs.

Over 3,500 girls were reached through Community Outreach, which brings the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls who might not otherwise have access to this life-changing opportunity.

Adult Support Key Priority: Enhance and support an adult structure to sustain membership growth and retention.

More than 2,000 adults were newly appointed to leadership positions.

GSWISE continues to provide strong adult educational opportunities for volunteers with over 2,000 participants taking part in enrichment opportunities.

Using the expertise of both staff and adult volunteers, the curriculum and resources for adult training courses were re-envisioned and received a refreshed look.

2012 Highlights Brand Key Priority: Develop and execute a sustainable and relevant GSWISE brand.

In conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting, the Brand Team implemented the GSUSA 100th anniversary art and messaging into many publications beginning in the fourth quarter of 2011. The centennial anniversary ended on March 12, 2013.

With 2012 declared the Year of the Girl, advertising and promotional pieces were infused with the accompanying language, which encourages the community to support girl leadership development.

On January 24, 2012, 15 women members of the Wisconsin State Legislature were inducted into the inaugural Troop 1912, launched on the occasion of Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary. The purpose of this troop is to honor women at the forefront of policymaking; to commend them as positive role models for girls; and to educate fellow members of the house and public about issues affecting girls and young women.

The iconic administrative headquarters of GSWISE, The Marion Chester Read Center, was celebrated on its 25th anniversary.

Resources Key Priority: Ensure and align current and future resources to execute our priorities.

Strategic property learning resulted in a nationally recognized, and unprecedented, “portfolio of property initiatives,” crafted directly from the mission-essential five key priorities outlined in With Girls, For Girls.

Meaningful partnerships with parents, volunteers, and generous financial supporters allowed us to raise $1.5 million from over 2,000 donors. 7

Always dancing and helping everyone If you ask Emily Higgins what she did today, chances are she’d tell you that she was a Girl Scout. From making crafts as a Girl Scout Daisy to organizing a project that helps young girls transition out of foster care as a Girl Scout Ambassador, her involvement in Girl Scouting has influenced every aspect of her life. Along with serving as captain of her poms squad and president of the Asian Club at Emily Higgins Brookfield East High School, Emily also mentored students with special needs. “Emily is one of the most outstanding young ladies that I have ever met,” says Brookfield East math teacher and dance team coach Jennifer Toth. “She is truly committed to every endeavor that she undertakes.” Outside of school, she is active in her church, teaches dance, and is a CIT (Counselor in Training) and a certified archery instructor at Girl Scout Day Camp. It was on the first day she taught archery on her own that she realized that she can do anything she sets out to do, and she credits this ability to the “fantastic adult leaders,” who worked hard to help her develop leadership skills and to be confident when making decisions. “I have been encouraged to be comfortable with who I am,” said Emily. Emily credits her mother, Robin, who has always been her troop leader, as being the most influential person in her 13 years as a Girl Scout. “She is a remarkable young woman,” comments Robin. “I love who she is and look forward to all she has yet to accomplish. I know her Girl Scout foundation will help her along the way – it all comes back to the Girl Scout Promise and Law.” A student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, Emily double majors in art and dance education and plans to continue her involvement in Girl Scouting. “I will always be dancing and helping everyone,” says Emily, whose goal is to own a dance studio that offers adaptive dance classes for children and adults with special needs along with mainstream classes. “Being a Girl Scout is who I am and who I wanted to be,” says Emily. “I am happy to be a part of something that is bigger than me and that is good for so many girls.” 8

2012 Highlights

GSWISE launched a community briefing series to educate and engage donors, friends and the community around issues of significance to girls. In 2012, briefings examined the influence of media on girls and how to engage more girls in science, technology, engineering and math.

Urban and Latina Key Priority: Launch initiatives that reach out to Urban and Latina Membership.

In the 2011-2012 membership year, a new Urban Initiative Model, designed to maximize the Girl Scout Experience for girls living in our urban neighborhoods who may not otherwise have access to Girl Scouting, was launched. Key components include increasing the program hours, additional events with family involvement, and a curriculum fully utilizing the Girl Scout National Program Portfolio.

With a grant from the Met Life Foundation and GSUSA, our Latina Initiatives also launched with our first council pilot into the Series Pathway. With a primary focus on engaging middle school Latinas in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, the series pathway is led by volunteers.

In an effort to keep girls engaged throughout the long summer months, the Project Care track was started to serve girls in kindergarten through fifth grade. In 2012, over 830 girls took part in the True U curriculum, which focused on building healthy relationships.

Looking Forward During the 2012-2013 membership year, GSWISE will undergo a strategic learning process to refresh With Girls, For Girls. The new blueprint will set the stage for continued innovation and inspiration through 2016.
