Tips and FAQs What do we need to know about Girl Scout events? Girl Scout events are designed to help girls at all levels discover new things, connect with other girls, and take action in their communities. The final result…girls gain leadership skills without even knowing it. About our events:

Tips & FAQs

• All Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast sponsored events are fun, interactive, held to the highest standards, and developed to meet the needs of all girls. • Events are facilitated by staff, volunteers, and/or girls. • Girl Scout troops have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun, engaging, and educational events together. • Girls can also choose to make new friends by attending individually.

What are the best events to attend?

When does registration close? Registration for all events (unless otherwise noted) closes one week before the event date if not filled earlier. Overnight event sleeping assignments are set two weeks prior to the event. We can only accept registrations for overnight events 1-2 weeks before the event if there is space available without changing sleeping assignments. If the event is full, you will be notified within three business days from time of receipt of paper registration.

What is the cancelation policy? If a troop or girl cannot attend an event for which they have paid, notify the council by the registration deadline (one week before day events and two weeks before overnight events). The fee can be transferred to another event (one transfer only). If the event is canceled by the council, full refunds will be issued.

It all starts with the girl. Make sure to include girls in the process. Discuss their personal tastes and preferences, check schedules, review costs and behavior responsibilities…and then let the girls choose. This is the girl-led process in action.

When will I receive a confirmation?

Girls and adults are responsible for sharing their decisions about event choices with parents, ensuring they are informed and can support the decisions.

Day event registrants will receive a confirmation email one week prior to the event. Overnight event confirmations go out two weeks prior to the event. The email will contain event details including appropriate dress, items to bring, directions, and maps. The person who registered the troop is responsible for ensuring that everyone has received the confirmation.

Our troop/daughter is bridging to the next level. What events should we sign up for?

Can girls use Program Activity Credits (PACs) to pay for events?

Girls bridging to the next level of Girl Scouting (Daisy to Brownie, for example) in the spring are invited to attend spring events for the grade girls will be entering into the following school year.

Yes! Girls earn PACs by participating in the Fall Nut Sale or Cookie Program Activity. They can be used to pay for all of, or some of event fees.

When does registration open? Events occurring September through January: Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. Events occurring February through May: Wednesday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m.

How to redeem PACs • Fill out a paper registration form found on pages 43-44 and then bring your PACs to your local Resource Center. They will be redeemed at the cash register.

Can I redeem PACs online? No. The only way to redeem PACs for events is to take them or mail them to your local Resource Center.

Tips and FAQs What is expected of troop leaders and adults who attend?

Are Program Aide (PA) opportunities available at events?

Troop leaders are responsible for obtaining permission slips and for meeting Safety-Wise adult to girl ratios for the event.

Yes! Girl Scouts in grades 6-12 are always welcome and encouraged to help lead activities at events for younger Girl Scouts. Events with this symbol, PA , provide a great opportunity for teen Girl Scouts to build their leadership skills by helping at that event. PAs attend events at no charge.

Attending adults are expected to assist the girls when needed to ensure appropriate girl behavior.

To register a PA:

How many adults can we bring to overnights?

• For more details on PA opportunities see p. 36 or go to gswise.org.

Will girls earn a recognition?

Additional needs?

All events are connected to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and many help girls earn a Girl Scout recognition–a badge or Journey award. Look for these listings when you review event descriptions:

We make every effort to meet the needs of all girls, so that everyone can fully participate. Please note any special emotional, learning, physical, or health needs of girls when registering. For specific questions or situations, email customercare@gswise.org or call 800-565-4475.

Earned award–girls will complete all steps needed to earn that badge or award

Tips & FAQs

Bed space is limited. We ask that troops only register the required number of adults to meet Safety-Wise standards.

Journey Jumpstarts What is a Journey?

What is a Journey Jumpstart?

Take a moment and think about a favorite memory from a trip you’ve taken–the fun adventures you had with your family or friends, new people that you met or a new food that you enjoyed eating.

For girls

For adults Adults will do activities right from the Journey, make adaptations to activities to meet girls’ interests and take side trips to do completely new activities that are related to themes within the Journeys. Mini adult enrichment sessions will happen during the event and allow adults to learn more about supporting girls in their next steps and network with other volunteers.

Journey Jumpstarts

A Journey is a trip that girls take to build their leadership skills. It’s the Girl Scout core leadership program. There are three themed Journey books for each level. Girls can choose activities to participate in and earn awards from each book. And, like a trip, each Journey is about the things girls do along the way.

At these events, girls will get a “jumpstart” on their Journey adventure by engaging in various Journey activities. Girls will earn the award(s) noted in the Journey Jumpstart event listing. After the event, if girls decide they would like to complete all of the awards, that’s up to them. It’s a girl’s Journey, so she chooses where it will take her.

During the event, all of the activities will be set up as stations. Girls will work as a group to determine which activities to do. There will be many to choose from. Each troop/team is responsible for making sure that all their members are engaged along the way. It’s your Journey so you decide! • Girls pick and choose the activities and work on them together as a troop, supported by the adults attending with them. or • We’ll create teams for girls attending individually. Fee includes the following materials that are distributed at the event: • A Journey book for each girl • Journey awards for each girl • An adult guide for each troop/individual

Highest Awards One is Silver…

These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

Grades 6-8

All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue you care about. Whether you want to plant a community garden at your school and inspire others to eat healthy for your Girl Scout Bronze, advocate for animal rights for your Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for your Gold, you’ll inspire others (and yourself).

This is an interactive workshop designed to help girls learn about the Silver Award processes and procedures. Girls are highly encouraged to take this workshop prior to turning in their Silver Award proposal form to the council. Have you ever looked around your neighborhood or school and wondered how you could make a change for the better? Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn—gives you the chance to do big things and make your community better in the process. Fee: $5 per girl 1 - Thursday, October 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Marion Chester Read Service Center 2 - Tuesday, November 15, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Silver Brook

Also a given: as you earn one of Girl Scouting’s highest awards, you’ll change your corner of the world-and maybe even beyond. The possibilities are endless. Want to see what others have done to earn their award? For inspiration, check out examples of Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award projects via Girl Scouts of the USA’s Map It: Girls Changing the World at girlscouts.org.

Girl Scout Gold Award Interviews

Grades 9–12

Grades 9-12

This is an interactive training that is designed to teach girls in grades 9-12 the Gold Award processes and procedures. This training is required prior to turning in a Gold Award Proposal and prior to starting a Gold Award Project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Once achieved, it shows colleges, employers, and your community that you’re out there changing the world. Join a century of women who have done big things.

Girls going for the Girl Scout Gold Award must meet with the Girl Scout Gold Award Committee for a first and final interview. A girl cannot start her project until approval is received from the council. For project approval and to schedule an interview date, submit a Project Proposal to the council at least three weeks prior to the preferred pre-scheduled interview date. The council will then schedule an interview appointment. Final paperwork must be received by February 1, 2017 to be recognized at the 2017 Girl Scout Award Celebration.

Community listings are found at gswise.org/Activities/On Your Own. Listings are organized by category (Arts & Culture, Colleges & Universities, Community Service, Healthy Living, Museums, Tours & Attractions, Outdoors, STEM).

Opportunities are updated throughout the year. Check back frequently for new offerings.

All registration and staffing for these events are handled by the specific hosting organization. Contact the organization directly for questions or to register for an event.

All Community Event Providers are reviewed and approved by GSWISE to ensure quality of activities and compliance with Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Community Event Provider Showcase

Investigate issues in their community.

Identify and understand the root cause of these issues.

Develop a Take Action project that tackles an issue that is meaningful to them.

Track the success of their project in a measurable way—ensuring that the project creates lasting change, not only for the moment, but for the future as well.

These three characteristics: root issue, measureable, and sustainable, are what differentiate Take Action projects from community service projects. To find ideas and links to opportunities for girls to Take Action or provide community service in a topic area they are passionate about go to gswise.org/Activities/On Your Own. Make This Girl Scout Year Your Best Yet. Now with the Volunteer Toolkit, the new web app that helps you save time and plan for success, you can make every troop meeting awesome! Here’s how it works: For Daisy, Brownie, and Junior troops, the Volunteer Toolkit comes with pre-populated plans for everything— a full year of Girl Scouts right there on your device! Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops don’t get pre-populated meetings yet (coming soon), but you can still access great planning features. Have your own idea for a meeting? Perfect. Everything in the Volunteer Toolkit is fully customizable. You can add your own activities and change their order with a quick drag-and-drop. You can also report on troop finances, access your girl and family roster, and track your girls’ achievements and attendance. No more hunting for the right activity or book—you’ve got everything you need right on the app! Use it on your home computer or tablet or other mobile device—so convenient!

Get started now. Sign in at gswise.org and check it out!

Invest in Girls. Change the World. For over 100 years, we have encouraged girls to proudly do anything they set their sights on.
