Who can be a Girl Scout Membership is available to any girl in grades K5-12 who accepts the Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law, and pays annual membership fees (financial assistance is available). A girl who meets membership requirements shall not be denied admission to any troop or group because of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, citizenship, ancestry, physical or mental disability, health status, socio-economic/public status, or national origin. Women and men, 18 years or older, may join as adult members by accepting the principles of the organization.

Learning by doing in a girl-led environment Grades 4-5 Girl Scouts is an exciting way to engage girls all year round. National studies from the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) show it’s not just what girls do, but how they do it that makes Girl Scouts so beneficial. Girl Scouts is unique because girls get to learn by doing, and they do so in a girl-led environment. This means that, in addition to girls learning in a hands-on and active way, they are encouraged to choose their activities, decide which topics they want to explore, and determine how they want to go about exploring them. Girl Scouts is the largest girl-led organization in the world, and it’s a significant contributor to its members’ success and enjoyment in life. At Girl Scouts, girls learn to think critically about issues and solve problems together. We encourage teamwork and collaboration as much as we encourage independence and self-discovery. Here, she learns to believe in herself and count on her community for support. She learns to work as part of a team, bring people with varying perspectives together to devise solutions, and respect and appreciate the viewpoints of others as much as she does her own.

Membership The Girl Scout membership year is from October 1, 2018-September 30, 2019. All adults are encouraged to show their support of Girl Scouts by registering as members. To ensure safety for all members, adults who volunteer to work directly with girls must be registered members and pass a background check. Upon registration, members are automatically covered under the basic GSUSA insurance plan. Financial aid is available. For more information, go to gswise.org or call 800-565-4475

Girl Membership Troop: $25 per girl Most girls belong to a troop that meets on a regular basis (usually once or twice a month) over the course of a year. Troops are led by co-leaders, trained volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of girls. However, girls are the decision makers in these girl-led troops! That is what Girl Scouts is all about—a place where G.I.R.L.s unleash their power. Troops form yearround and girls can join anytime. Individually Registered Member (IRM): $25 per girl Sometimes girls are so busy they can’t attend a local troop meeting. No worries, girls can still be Girl Scouts— they register as an Individually Registered Member. Girls can pick and choose events to attend—ones that peak their interest and fit their schedule. They can participate in the financial literacy program and sell Girl Scout cookies to help finance their Girl Scout activities. Parents/guardians of IRMs are encouraged to register as an adult member with Girl Scouts to support their girl in her Girl Scout experience.

Lifetime Membership

Parents are a vital part of Girl Scouts. We want every Girl Scout’s experience to be the best it can be and you as a parent can make that happen.

Adult lifetime membership: $400 per member

Adult member: $25 per member Adult members are registered Girl Scouts who support the Girl Scout movement. Members receive our Connect email (twice a month) that includes council news, promotions, research on women and girls, council annual report, and so much more. You are also invited to be part of our Girl Scout Network on LinkedIn! Volunteer: $25 per member Whether you can give a few hours, a few weeks, a few months, or more, volunteering with Girl Scouts is flexible and fun when you become a volunteer member. • Troop Co-leaders — work with a group of girls and mentor them as they make new friends and develop connections that will last a lifetime. Training available online or in person. • Troop Helping Hands — assist with driving, activity planning, snacks, money management, or other tasks necessary to keep the troop running smoothly. • Troop Nut Manager/Cookie Captain — coordinate the annual Fall Nut Sale or Cookie Program Activity at the troop level. Set up cookie booths, manage inventory and money, and watch the girls light up when they meet their goals! • Camp or Event Volunteers — help girls explore nature and find fun outdoors or give a few hours to help an event go off without a hitch. • Specialist Volunteers — do you have a special set of skills that will help the next generation of Girl Scouts grow? Girls need to see women leaders who have blazed the path for them in STEM, protective services, woodworking, and many other fields. • Series Facilitator- facilitate Girl Scout curriculum with a group of girls for 4- 6 weeks. Focus on self esteem, STEM, or financial literacy. Curriculum and resources are provided. By volunteering with Girl Scouts, you’re helping to provide critical skills like collaboration, conflictresolution, and problem solving. Watch girls gain confidence and stretch to reach their potential, knowing that you helped get them there.

Volunteers are always needed, but a minimum of two registered, approved, and unrelated Girl Scout adults must be present at every troop meeting. At least one volunteer needs to be a female, but men are welcome to volunteer too.

Adults who choose to become Girl Scouts for life help develop the essential qualities for girls to lead a lifetime of confidence, success, and adventure. Special Rates: Graduating Senior: $200 per member Recent high school graduates understand firsthand how an inclusive, girl-led environment can change a girl’s life. Parents, grandparents, or troop co-leaders can be a champion for girls changing the world today and for generations to come by purchasing a lifetime membership for their graduating senior. As a recent graduate she’ll enjoy a special rate of $200 (regularly priced at $400). Young Alumnae: $200 per member Anyone who was a registered Girl Scout member before the age of 18 and is under the age of 30 at the time of becoming a lifetime member receives a special discounted lifetime membership rate of $200.

Safety First The safety of girls in Girl Scouting is always a top priority. Troop co-leaders receive training and materials aimed at creating a safe and welcoming experience for all girls and adult volunteers. Resources such as Volunteer Essentials, Children and Youth Protection Guidelines, and Safety Activity Checkpoints are available at gswise.org.

Background Checks All volunteers must register and complete a background check to ensure the safety of all girls. Volunteers in roles such as co-leader, troop helping hands, troop nut manager, or cookie captain are required to complete a background check.

Health History Card To ensure the safety of girls during all Girl Scout activities, parents/guardians are highly encouraged to complete the Health History Card (found on p. 69–70) and provide to your troop co-leader annually. Girls who are not attending activities with a troop are encouraged to complete and bring the Health History Card to council-sponsored events to ensure event facilitators have necessary emergency contact information.

Books that aren’t like everyday life help you see things differently. C) Mysteries and thrillers. It’s exciting to never know what’s going to happen next. D) Stories about relationships. Families and friendships are the best things in life!

5 When there’s a karaoke machine at a party, you: A) Sing the same song every time. You’ve practiced it, so you can hit every note! B) Tend to perform as a “backup dancer.” So many ways to bring the fun! C) Play “dare-oke” and have your friends pick songs for you that you’re scared to sing. D) Pick a song that you know another, more reserved girl might want to sing with you.

6 If you worked for NASA, you’d want to: A) Start a program to get even more girls and women involved in space exploration. B) Invent new, faster methods of space travel and ways to gather data. C) Go out in space! How cool would it be to see Earth from the moon? D) Run the Mission Control Center, which handles any problems a space mission might encounter.

7 For Halloween, you: A) Spend weeks thinking of and shopping for a perfect costume. Your look will be on point! B) Make your own costume. It’ll be just how you want it and you’ll save money to boot. C) Dress as your favorite, but not that famous, character. Who cares if anyone else “gets it”? D) Coordinate a group costume with your friends so that everyone’s in on the fun.

8 Your room is decorated with: A) Posters of your idols—all the athletes, artists, and others who’ve achieved your dreams. B) Lots of artsy stuff. Collages, paintings, and even images of space are inspiring to you. C) Different stuff all the time! You’ll put things up, only to get into new things and redecorate. D) Pics of you and your girl squad. You and your friends are inseparable.

Managing Troop Funds

Summer Camp

The girls, with guidance from co-leaders, decide how troop funds will be used for their activities. Troop funds are earned by troops and are the property of the troop, not the individual girl members.

Girl Scout camp is a safe way for girls to have fun in the natural world. It’s the perfect place to challenge themselves, experience new things, and make lifelong friendships. There is a camp that is just right for every girl. Girls can choose to camp overnight and wake up for a swim or sail across crystal clear waters. Or they can choose to spend the night in their own beds and the day at camp exploring.

Co-leaders are required to keep troop financial records and to share this information with parents on a regular basis. All troop expenses and revenue should be run through the troop bank account. Misuse of Girl Scout funds is a serious offense and will be treated as such, including, but not limited to, legal prosecution.

Troop Dues Troops rely on a combination of troop dues and proceeds from product sales to finance activities. The amount and frequency of payment is determined at the troop level and reflects the troop’s plans for the year and the families’ ability to pay. Dues generally are a first-year cost for new troops to establish a financial base.

Uniforms We are proud of our Girl Scout identity and the sense of belonging that comes from wearing a uniform. Every Girl Scout should have a tunic, vest, or sash. This is where they can proudly display their badges, patches, and other awards. There will be times when girls are required to wear their uniform. All items can be purchased from a GSWISE resource center.

Overnight camp—Group living and camp activities at historic Camp Alice Chester in East Troy provide lifechanging experiences for girls. Themed camp stays, on and off the property, range from two to six nights and include activities like archery, arts, hiking, climbing, swimming, sailing, and adventure trips such as horseback riding and canoeing. GSWISE also partners with MATC to provide an overnight camp focused on protective services careers. Day camp—GSWISE has several day camp opportunities available. Camp Silver Brook Day Camp. Located in West Bend, staff lead campers through activities centered around a different theme each week throughout the entire summer. Located on beautiful Lucas Lake and the Ice-Age trail, busing to and from the camp is available at various sites in Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties. Day Camp by Community. GSWISE has one of the largest programs in the country! Over five thousand girls attend these day camps, planned and led by volunteers, with paid health supervision and lifeguards. Busing from your community to one of four different camp properties is available throughout the summer. Programs are listed at gswise.org and in the Summer Camps and Events Book (mailed to families in January).

Event Basics

Event Basics Event Registration General Information Adventures for Every Girl! Whether she is a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, or leader, we’ve got an event that will unleash her inner G.I.R.L. We encourage her to try something new but be sure to sign her up for old favorites, too! Interested in science? New to the outdoors? We have programs just for her! Did she love archery last year? Or climbing the rock wall? Chances are she’ll love it again. Events are loaded with classic Girl Scout programming so get her ready to learn, have fun, and make new friends. • Girls can attend events by themselves, with their troop, or with a favorite adult. • For some events, girls need to have an adult chaperone. • Events are also a fun way to start or complete requirements for an earned award. • Events are facilitated by staff, volunteers, and/or girls (under supervision).

Registration Details • We invite girls to attend events for the grade she is currently in. • All GSWISE-sponsored events are fun, interactive, educational, held to the highest safety standards, and developed to meet the needs of all girls. • Some events are appropriate for the whole family. Find these events in the Family, Troop, and Volunteer Events section, on pp. 18–21. These are the only events that siblings can attend. • Our online registration system only accepts one registration for each girl per event. When necessary, parents and troop leaders should discuss who will be registering girls for an event. • For day events, registration closes two days prior to the event. An additional $10 late fee will be charged for registrations received less than one week before the event. • For sleepover events, registration closes one week prior to the event. An additional $10 late fee will be charged for registrations received less than two weeks prior to the event. • Some events cannot accept late registrations. • Event fees are subject to change.

How to Register • NEW! Registration opens on Monday, October 1, at noon for all events in Connections. • Note that many September and October events were promoted in the Summer Camps and Events book and are already open for registration. • Go to gswise.org>My GS>Member Profile>Activities • If you need assistance registering, contact customercare@gswise.org, 800-565-4475, or drop by your local Girl Scout Service Center.

Program Activity Credits (PACs) Girls earn PACs by participating in the Fall Nut Sale or Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity. They can be used to pay for all or partial event fees. Register online and pay in full for the event for the girl who has earned the PAC. After registering and paying for the event, complete the PAC Redemption Form at gswise.org >Resources. We will then issue a reimbursement for the PAC amount.

Event Financial Assistance Available to help girl members participate in Girl Scout events. Financial assistance can be considered for one event per season (fall, spring, summer) per girl. To request event financial assistance, select the Financial Aid box during online registration. A Financial Assistance Form will be emailed to the family to complete and submit. Financial assistance is funded by proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity and gifts to Girl Scouting. Check your SPAM folder if needed.

Confirmations • The adult who registered for the event can view confirmations at gswise.org>MyGS>Member Profile>My Activities two weeks prior to the event. In the case of troop registrations, the adult who registered the girls is responsible for sharing the confirmation with all registrants along with any additional information specific to the event. • The adult who registered for the event can see a list of all registrants by clicking on i in My Activities.

Program Aides (PA)

All events are connected to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and many events help girls earn a Girl Scout recognition — a badge, patch, or Journey award. In the event description, “earned award” means that girls will complete all steps needed to earn the award and “related award” means that girls will complete some steps needed to earn the award. The event confirmation will list the steps being covered at an event. Recognitions are available for purchase at your local Girl Scout Service Center.

Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, you can assist at events by leading activities as a Program Aide! Have fun, strengthen your leadership skills, and meet new friends while working directly with younger girls. Events with this symbol, PA , list opportunities for Program Aides.

Cancellation/Refund Policy Timeframe

Up to 4 weeks prior to the event

Cancellations can be transferred to a future event at the time of cancellation, or a registrant may request an Activity Credit be applied to the appropriate account. Activity Credits must be used for events happening prior to September 1, 2019.

Cancellations can be transferred to a future event at the time of cancellation, or registrant may request an Activity Credit be applied to the appropriate account. For both transfers and Activity Credits during this time period, a $5 processing fee will be incurred for each registrant. Event Registration General Information

• How PAs register: o Go to gswise.org>MY GS>Member Profile>Activities. o Scroll through or search for events that interest you. o Find the event name with “PA” in front of it and use that link to complete your registration. PAs do not pay a registration fee. • Attend Program Aide Core Training before you volunteer. Although not required, it is a good idea. It is loaded with information to help you work well with younger girls. To register for a Program Aide Core Training visit gswise.org>MY GS>Member Profile>Activities.

Bridging Troops In the spring, girls bridging to the next level of Girl Scouting (Daisy to Brownie, for example) are invited to attend events for the grade they will be entering the following school year. This can help them get a feel for what’s to come at the next level.

Adult Volunteers/Chaperones Full refunds will be issued. Refunds should be received within two weeks.

Want to Bring a Friend? All girls are welcome to attend events. Encourage friends to become Girl Scouts to receive the Girl Scout member event fee or they can choose to pay the event fee plus an additional $25 non-member fee per event. Find out more by contacting customercare@gswise.org.

Non-members Attending Events There is a non-member option when registering for events. It is intended for girls that want to try out Girl Scouts before joining and for parents attending events with their child who are not responsible for chaperoning other children. Non-members pay a $25 fee plus the event fee per event (except for family and friend events). Paying the non-member fee doesn’t register them as a Girl Scout. Adults volunteering at Girl Scout programs and adults chaperoning girls other than their family are required to be registered with Girl Scouts of the USA as an adult member. Safety is our number one priority. We can ensure the safety of all Girl Scouts and Girl Scout volunteers only when adults become registered members and complete the required background check. Adult volunteers are responsible for obtaining permission slips and for meeting adult to girl ratios for the event. All attending adults are expected to assist the girl(s) as needed and to ensure appropriate girl behavior. For sleepover events, bed space is limited. Troops should only register the required number of adults to meet minimum required adult-to-girl ratios. Any additional adults wishing to attend should contact customercare@gswise.org a minimum of two weeks prior to the event to check availability.

Girl Scout Sleepover with the Bucks

Join us for an all-council bridging ceremony! Bridging is an important transition in a Girl Scout’s life. It’s a time to celebrate your achievements, and look forward to the adventures ahead. If you’ll be bridging to the next Girl Scout level in spring 2019, watch for more information to come out around January/February and register for GSWISE’s 1st annual all-council bridging ceremony.

Enjoy a night of Milwaukee Bucks basketball with troops, families, and friends! Girl Scouts and chaperones are invited to participate in a sleepover at the new Bucks arena. Additional details, including ticket ordering information, will be announced via email and on social media when available.

Spend time together as you enjoy hiking, cooking over a campfire and staying in one of our cabins, platform tents or troop houses. On Saturday, we will have lifeguards on duty for swimming and canoeing on Booth Lake and staff supervising climbing on our 40ft rock wall. Rental fees vary depending on accommodations and include swimming, rock climbing, and access to our sports equipment. Each family is responsible for their own meals and activities outside of those listed above. Each family attending must have at least one registered girl and adult member. Outdoor Fun Series PA New! Grades K5-12 and their troops/families Register for one, two, or all three of these unique outdoor experiences giving families and troops a chance to connect in the outdoors at one of our beautiful properties. Each event includes one highlighted activity (listed below) and the chance to take a self-guided hike (map provided). Activities are designed so guests can drop-in and stay as long as they like. Sign up for each event individually or save when you sign up for all three. Scale to new heights as you challenge yourself on the rock wall at Camp Alice Chester. Receive safety instruction on the auto-belay system, and then climb as much as you like during the two-hour session.

FLL is a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO Group. FLL encourages youth to think like scientists and engineers as they create an innovative solution to a real-world problem by designing, building, and programming an autonomous robot. Each year, GSWISE supports a select number of teams. FLL presents a new theme annually with a new set of challenges. Older Girl Scouts can lead, or assist leading, specific activities for younger girls while fine-tuning their own skills. Girls can act as PAs at council and service unit events, within a troop, and at camp. PAs need to be at least two years older than the girls they are working with. Grades 10–12 Looking for a unique leadership experience? Be the voice of girls as you help Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast make strategic decisions about the organization in order to fulfill our long-term mission. Each year, GSWISE accepts applications for the position of girl board member to serve on the Board of Directors for a oneyear term with full voting privileges beginning with the spring Annual Meeting. Up to two girl board members are elected annually to attend 4–6 board meetings to discuss and vote on matters that affect GSWISE. They work alongside the Chief Executive Officer and other adult board members who are community and business leaders in our jurisdiction. Girls must be registered Girl Scouts, high school sophomores or above, and 14 years old or older by the time the term begins in April. The application is usually posted at gswise.org in January. The time to explore the world is now! Gain experiences of a lifetime while visiting new places with friends from GSWISE. Join experienced adults from our council who will guide your world tour. Try new foods, immerse yourself in different languages, and experience new cultures. Girls will meet several times before the trip to prepare and get sneak peeks of what to expect. Build your character, increase your confidence, and test your courage as you voyage out into the world with girls and adults from your own council. Girls must be 14 or older at the time of travel. There is an opportunity to get one high school credit for participating in a trip!

Girl Scout teens can go on unforgettable trips through Girl Scout Destinations and next summer this could be you! Experience incredible travel opportunities, meet girls from around the world, and return inspired and empowered. Girl Scout Destinations take Girl Scouts 11 years and older on unique trips ranging from dog sledding in Minnesota, to discovering the Amazon in Peru, seeing Broadway in New York, and learning about astronautics in Alabama. Trips generally happen in the summer, range from several days to a few weeks, and are sponsored by Girl Scout councils across the country or Girl Scouts of the USA-approved organizations, like Outward Bound.

Get your team together, it’s time to Adventure Race, winter style. Keeping with the tradition of true Adventure Racing, your team’s map and compass will be your key to finding checkpoints and treasures throughout Camp Silver Brook and crossing the finish line. Schlitz Audubon Offers interactive programs designed to help Girl Nature Center Scouts fulfill requirements needed to complete badges and explore the outdoors. Troop Camping Troop camping allows troops to spend time together and design their own camp experience. Spending time outdoors at camp lets girls try new things, strengthen outdoor skills, build confidence, and ignite their interest in environmental stewardship. Whether earning badges, working on a Journey, or just having fun, Girl Scout troops are in for a good time when they go to one of our camps. Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) offers a wide variety of sites for your troop camping outing. Troops can pick from seven program properties located in southeastern Wisconsin. We offer a progression of facilities ranging from indoor troop houses with plumbing and furnished kitchens, to rustic cabins, platform tents, or primitive camping.

Reservation Timeframes

Requirements for Troop Camping

The site rental check-in for an overnight begins at 4:30 p.m. and check-out is 2:30 p.m. the following day. Any deviation before or after this timeframe will result in additional fees.

•

Overnight troop camping is open to troops at all grade levels. All troop members participating and/ or staying overnight on our properties need to be current, registered members in Girl Scouts.

•

Planning the Overnight Experience training is recommended for troops staying overnight at camp or a service center.

•

Outdoor Skills training is required by an adult Girl Scout member for troops planning to cook over an outdoor fire.

•

Up-to-date first aid and CPR/AED certification for an adult accompanying your troop must be provided to the council no later than two weeks prior to the desired reservation date.

•

Girl-to-adult ratios outlined in Volunteer Essentials: Chapter 4 must be followed. For troop camping, ratios are two adults for every six Girl Scout Daisies, twelve Brownie Girl Scouts, sixteen Junior Girl Scouts, twenty Cadette Girl Scouts, or twenty-four Senior or Ambassador Girl Scouts.

Day use is available for troops and is defined as five hours or less, and the timeframe must occur between 4:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. the next day. Troops may book Day Use Only rentals 60 days in advance. Most program properties are open for troop camping seven days a week. Camp Alice Chester, Camp Pottawatomie Hills, Camp Silver Brook, and Camp Winding River are closed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. All program properties are closed during gun deer hunting seasons and during council holiday breaks.

Tours of Program Properties If you wish to visit a program property before your rental date, you can schedule an appointment with the site manager. See p. 4 for a list of the program properties and phone numbers. Detailed information is available at gswise.org.

Trefoil Oaks Program Center

Male Volunteers or Chaperones Men are welcome to camp at council program properties. However, necessary arrangements need to be made in advance that include separate sleeping quarters and separate bathrooms. Adult volunteers should inform parents that a male will be going on the camping trip. If the unit will be shared with another troop, make sure they are aware that a male will be coming along.

Cancellations/Transfers

Camp dates are booked up to six months in advance. To book a date:

Rescheduling or transferring a booking is allowed one time as long as it occurs five weeks prior to the reservation date.

Check availability and fees at gswise.org.

To register, go to gswise.org>Camp>Troop Camping>Property and then click on the form to register.

Payment must be submitted at time of booking or by mail within five business days.

Up-to-date certifications for First Aid/CPR/ AED, and Outdoors Skills are due no later than two weeks prior to the desired reservation date.

A confirmation packet will be sent to the contact person within two weeks of application and payment being received. The email confirmation packet will include PDF documents of the confirmation letter, a map of the site, directions to the program property, an emergency contact sheet, and other pertinent information. Share this information with all parents and drivers.

All cancellations need to be received in writing five weeks prior to the reservation date to receive a refund. Troops need to email registration@gswise.org to cancel a rental date. All but a $10 processing fee will be refunded. No refunds will be given if the cancellation is less than five weeks prior to the rental date. Troops will incur $25 processing fee when they request to transfer dates or switch program properties, within five weeks of the reservation. GSWISE reserves the right to close a program property if the weather is too severe or if there is major equipment failure. If the council closes a program facility, a full refund will be issued.

Team Building Initiatives: This is a self-guided, on-theground group of problem solving activities. A binder with storylines, safety guidelines, and instructions is available.

Fishing: Fishing is offered from the shore or pier at Camp Alice Chester, Camp Pottawatomie Hills, and Camp Silver Brook. Anyone over 16 years old must have a valid Wisconsin fishing license. Bring your own equipment and bait. No fishing from the swimming pier.
