Precedent Studies Atmosphere and Performative Landscape Peter zumthor & piet oudolf - Serpentine Pavilion

The design emphasizes the role of senses and emotions, playing in our experience of space. The building acts as a stage for the interior flora to perform. Through meandering the darkness people enter the building from the lawn to the central garden. The users will be greeted with a respite from the noise of London ‘This experience will be intense and memorable, as will the materials themselves – full of memory and time.’ “the carefully chosen flora produces an array of colors, fragrances and textures which consume the individuals corporeal senses. additionally attracting butterflies and bees into the space, this unexpected encounter with nature redirects contemplation skyward creating a meditative atmosphere.” The project is chosen due to it’s experiential nature and performative element of the landscape, instead of merely being a supplement to the architecture.

Sublimity and Experience to Nature

John Constable’s romanticism paintings and Sublimity - Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead Heath, with a Boy Sitting on a Bank Edmund Burke’s (1757) connected the sublime with strong sensation which include awe and terror. Burke saw nature as the most sublime object. In the first painting, a raging storm passing given the inclusion of a large rainbow arching above the cathedral. The clouds are billowing and turbulent, there is a contrasting light and darkness, and there is even a streak of lightning. We feel a sense of awe, grandeur, we enter the sublime. By the early nineteenth century the open landscape of was increasingly appreciated as a refuge from the ever more crowded and polluted city. This respite is captured in the second painting. The idea of offering refuge from the urban, while implementing the weather and environment as a part of the drama is aimed to be applied.

Key Considerations Ephemerality

Design Intent The outdoor theatre aims to create a dramatic landscape in contrast to the formal landscape of the Domain Parklands. The plant will be the performer in the outdoor theatre, performing a drama; a drama that is achieved by (1) creating ephemerality, through different scenes in different time and space, and (2) Evoking the emotion through the senses in each season. The outdoor theatre will engage culturally with the art precinct, while challenging the relationship of people and nature within a garden context.

Form The spatial dramaturgy, the dialectics between the body and space, is explored through the narrative of the theatrics.

Front of house Proscenium arch

Sequence and space is an abstraction of a performance. Instead of moving performers and static audience, the audience will experience the acts through moving into the space. Form is explored by abstracting the spatial hierarchy of theatre halls, and using the logic for planting.

Apron Drape Stage

“it’s always about composition, proportion, about consistency and its counterpoint , i.e. the beauty of the moment of surprise. It’s about contrast and unity.” - Alfred Brendel, Pianist
